A Canadian viewer here , i work in the heavy steel industry where our place is always dusty fine particulate and gets in everything , we have used Donaldson filters for over 20 years for the simple reason they work the best and i am talking in propane, gas and diesel engines and use their filter medias on our PLC cabinets and we have around 50 or more filter media is cheap compared to if a card goes out in one of our PLC cabinets that's a minimum of $2500 and $2500 per hour of lost production time i even use Donaldson filters in my Volvo's and VW Golf and there is a noticeable difference with the Volvo old gas engine i use 12 litres less per week what use to be 10 per day is now 8 per day, it is the Donaldson filters, My Australian cousin works up in the coal field areas and says he uses Donaldson filters to in his older Land Cruiser diesel 👍
Donaldson know what they are doing! Their industry experience in equipment and machinery is what makes their filter for the 200 Series superior (in our opinion).
The Donaldson PowerCore looks the goods ,I fitted one 20k ago, and the engine inlet is still spotless. There is slightly more induction noise with Safari snorkel fitted around 1600 rpm but not excessive.
Toyota has a lot going for it! Especially in their older engines and vehicles. However, these few flaws are major in their more later vehicles. Hence the video to bring more awareness to one of the largest flaws with the VDJ engine.
The major flaw with the Toyota Landcruiser airbox is that people who can't fit a an filter properly roll the sealing lip or fit a non genuine air filter with a poorly fitting seal and dust leaks past. Those same people will stuff up the Donaldson air filter too which is why Donaldson say don't remove the lid. And if your air intake plumbing is holed or disconnected or taped up with duct tape you can't blame the airbox.
I have had Toyota’s for the last 30 years and definitely had my fair share of dramas but nowhere near as many as my buddies with patrols and Navara’s, I have always put in an aftermarket air box and filter, breathers in most cars and almost always done oils and filters on time or close to. you couldn’t give me a VDJ though.
I've got a 79 and use the genuine toyota filter only, fit it properly, never had any dust. I think 99% of the issues are mechanics not fitting the air filter lid properly. Having said that the Donaldson looks more friendly on that issue, is there a 79 one?
This upgrade look great but the main problem i see is spare filters. Your car is basically dead if you can't find this custom replacement filter only made by Donaldson. I would have bought the product if they had found a way to ensure the same level of filtration by keeping the stock filters which are widely available.
The Donaldson Filters are available across many outlets Aussie wide - including us, which we can ship anywhere within 2 weeks. But I do hear your concern, not a problem with us though!
We had this issue cost us $39,000 thing that upsets me the most is after the engine change i found dust and residue from the old engine in the intake pipe (they failed to clean the pipes on the change over ).
@@PerthDieselPerformance to be honest it goes ok as in heaps of power (tuned and gturbos) when it’s not coming up with a fuel filter restriction or a code p0087 and p0093 flashing 4lo like it’s starving for fuel after planting the foot towing the van or not than goes into limp mode till I let it sit and clear the codes , not real impressed given never had this issue before the engine was replaced (old engine wasn’t tuned either) . Yeah I have a Donaldson powercore and a armax snorkel and that side of things are perfect it seems more a lack of care on the workshop side that is letting it down
Gday thanks for all your videos and information you post, I’m in the market for a 200 is there a simple test with out dismantling the inlet piping to check for dust most owners aren’t keen on me taking tools to there car.
Not really - the most obvious and simple one would be inspecting inside the of the airbox lid, if there is dust, it's more than likely a case of walking away.
Of this is such a big deal as suppliers of improved air boxes claim, why haven't people arced up and got stuck into Toyota. Class actions etc. Just thinking along the lines when there was all the hooha with the 4cyl in hilux and prado egr issues...
How much of this is caused driver or technician error - ie not properly closing / sealing air box? How many 200’s out there without issues? Or just all of them need it done.
Many 200s out there with this issue. Whether it was a faulty batch is unsure, as it ranges from early to late models. The type of driving does factor in - however for the vehicle's price point and of course title of the Landcruiser - you'd expect it to seal properly from the day it was first driven. Some go by without issue though. Just pop open your airbox and have a check for your own one.
Toyota's nightmare reliability legend. A mate's 200 series never been offroad, 75000ks shat the engine while doing a DPF burn in his driveway. Toyota has had it for 2 weeks still not fixed. Apparently they fitted 8 new injectors, but that didn't fix the problem so now they're waiting for warranty approval for the next step of their fix - what is obviously a cracked piston needing a short motor. Of course they won't tell him what's actually wrong with it.
Don't open the lid on the Donaldson airfilter to look inside even when new or at any point to see if it's actually working or there goes your warranty. I wouldn't want to use it for a few years between its service intervals to find out it's been leaking dust past all that time. Atleast with the stock filter you can check it at any point for dust ingress & take action.
We would have to disagree with you there. Donaldson has no issue with your vehicle's warranty. They have designed the Airbox with the purpose of solving this issue, had it on testing for a significant period of time to ensure it was up to the task before bringing to market.
@@PerthDieselPerformance I & Donaldson would disagree you there, it's clearly written in the instructions for the 200 series airbox..... Do not open the cover unless you are replacing the element. Removing and inspecting the element can lead to the potential misalignment of the formed compression set on the element gasket, which could void the warranty. Never try to clean the air element, even with compressed air, as this may damage the delicate fibers of the filter media and transfer contaminants to the clean side, also resulting in a voided warranty
@@steveos6472 As soon as you invent a "better" airbox along comes a better idiot to stuff things up which is why Donaldson say don't open the airfilter or void its warranty. I wouldn't want to rely on its airflow restriction gauge as if its leaking past the filter seal that gauge will never show the filter is becoming blocked or restricted and then your done & dusted before you know it.
Compared to the wheel arch where majority of dust is being built up? Snorkels definitely help. If in a convoy, keep your distance + driving on a different line (if possible) to keep out of the dust trail too!
Yeah great, spend a fortune on this over rated pos and have to spend another fortune on it to get it how it should have been. Dont even get me started on the 79 series, most over priced pos ever made in this country.
That’s is contrary (scaremongering)to Berrima diesel who state don’t fit ryco filter as they are not the same width as genuine Toyota. Come on,this is liable talk! Bagging out a perfectly good air box to sell an aftermarket product you make money to fit. shame on you. $$$

We have had several VDJ200's that we KNOW have had the genuine Toyota filters fitted correctly & replaced EVERY SERVICE or 10,000km and are driven normally with some (approx 10-15%) gravel road use.
