It was a great video, Matt. Thanks for sharing it. As a perfectionist myself, I'm sorry to point out a flaw, but at 7:44 you say "37% better", where as it should be either "37 times better"* or "3,600% better". Small tweak to get to that 100% perfect. 😉 *Thanks for correcting me, Gabriel.
Perfectionism has helped me when it pushed me to do more, and has hurt me when it held me back from doing anything at all. My current mantra: "This is good enough for now, I can come back and be perfect later." Saves me so much time when doing video edits, and most of the time I come back and realize my first try was actually pretty good. Great video topic!
Honestly, I think this was more helpful to hear than the video. I love Matt's work, but when any work you make still doesn't feel 90% good enough, it's tough to get even halfway there. However, viewing everything as a ROUGH rough draft to refine later might be more my speed.
Wow… I think this comment just completely changed my life. Hmmmm.. Yep. Life changed forever 😭 Thanks random human that will never know what they did to my fork in a disposal brain 🤯
"if i'm not aiming for perfection then what the hell am I working towards?" This really hit me because unconsciously that's what I'm focused on, and I'm paralyzed because of it. Perfectionism really plagued my life. I want to stop this thinking and shift my attention to getting it done rather than perfect like you said. Thanks a lot for the video, it was super helpful!

From a recovering perfectionist, this clip was fantastic. It reminded me of the time I made a wedding cake for my son and the middle of the cake had sunk. we just covered it up with more icing. Yes, people did comment on how there was more icing in the middle of the cake 😂 and when one of my family members said something, I replied to her that good enough was good enough. That was when she turned around and told me it was the yummiest wedding cake that she had ever tasted. 😊
Wise perfectionism. Setting realistic goals, so we don't fall into the trap of repeatedly setting high goals and them beating ourselves up. Let perfectionism be the action of "doing" rather than the idea of "meeting goals." This way, we have a blast whether we both finish our projects and lessen the judgmental thoughts that we have relating to the project.
Great video, that 4th wall break at 0:40 cracked me up! (Nit picky from the story telling aspect, but 7:43 you'd be 37 times better or a 3678% increase, not 37%)
I immediately think of this awesome quote after watching the video: “perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” - Vince Lombardi
I thought this was going to be about a different thing, but I really enjoyed this and I'm going to try to adapt this. I thought you were going to say when you aim for habits, you aim to complete them 90% of the time. I saw someone say this on Reddit, and I adapted it but found 90% to be too much. Instead, I found 75% is the sweet spot. Which means if you have a daily habit you can miss 91 days, which sounds insane, because it's three months worth of days. But it's really not. Because what about when you're sick, Or work makes you stay longer, or you want to go on vacation, etc. Completing goals 75% of the time ism ore than 95% of people Off course that means you have to adjust your goals to reflect not hitting them 100% of the time. So if you set a calorie limit to hit daily, your weight loss goal for the year should reflect that you'll only hit that limit 75% of the time. I wrote this out in case anyone would find this valuable. As a perfectionist, when I missed a day of meditation, or exercise, etc my mental would crumble. Setting 75% really allowed me to have peace of mind. Because even the two day rule Matt does isn't realistic, in my opinion. What if you have the flu? What if a close relative passes away, or what if you have a weekend trip? Now we may say "of course the two day rule doesn't follow here," but us perfectionists know that's a trap. We'll say "well why are those days exceptions and not others, etc." So knowing you have 91 days you can miss, or 78 days for 6 day a week habits or 65 days for 5 days a week, etc. pushes you towards your goals and also gives you peace of mind. Because imagine if you completed healthy habits 75% of time, you'd make great progress by the end. Also to clarify, off days don't count. So when I say a five day a week habit, that means you get to miss 75% of those five days that you're supposed to do your habit. Hope this helped fellow perfectionists!
I love that you look at perfectionism as a strength, and finding the balance between progress and perfection. I'm definitely a recovering procrastinating perfectionist and have found great value in finding a "good enough" place for my work. I do allow myself to revisit things that I cannot get off my mind, but most of the time, I leave it be.
Let's not forget that the biggest payouts in the markets don't come from great performances but rather it's great promotions. Stay invested, diversification for streams of incomes is very important.
I urge everyone to start somewhere now no matter how small, this is literally the time for that, forget material things, don't get tempted,i became more better the moment i realized this.
Obviously often times we just look for what to invest in and usually encounter these problems. It's either the money is too huge for what I want to invest or it could require more than expected.
Another great quote I love is "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good". By trying to achieve perfection we can miss making something good at all, a bit like your analogy with The Thief and the Cobbler, Great video as usual!
After some me search. One of the reasons I procrastinate is because I am some kind of perfectionist. But being one has made me a really good learner. When I eventually start learning something, whether it's for a hobby or for school, or start a project I pour so much into them. At some point I get really skilled at many things and impress many people with my project. So I think embracing my "perfectionism" but also leaving somethings "unfinished" from time to time is the right way for me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience on this, Matt!
Wow. I came here through Luc Forsyth channel, but this is super helpful and inspiring. Thank you Matt for sharing. I am a filmmaker and often find myself procrastinating - striving to do the best and very seldom publishing my work - kind of saving it in back drawer - hoping one day - comes and I will become famous or successful. I am learning to find ways to overcome my perfectionistic tendencies and just do the work and share it without fear. Thanks for helping along the way.
Glad to see someone here mention about a bit more background story about Richard and The Thief and the Cobbler. As an animator myself, our profession is kind of cursed and blessed by perfectionism. Clinging on to the detail that nobody's seems to care are actually the foundation of the art of animation. It takes years to finish a good piece in general which in most of case will be consider " taking too long and is it worth it? " plus the production was often cut short by publishing team and investor to restricted the artist's truth ambition and vision. It's bit like building a cathedrals, Sagrada Família is still been under construction after100 years, such epic project will not be thinkable in modern days, maybe that's why now we no longer have architecture like the pyramid and cathedrals. In most of professional animator's eyes, the achievement and artistic level of The Thief and the Cobbler is way WAY higher than Aladdin, in a way Aladdin was a stolen idea and made fast to beat the original. So does it mean whoever finish the product first is the winner? Is it always ethical? It's very debateable. Till today, there're still a group of animators working on this project to make it the way Richard intended it be. It is a project that NEED this much time and I truly believe, without perfectionism vision of Richard this will not become one of the most amazing traditional animated piece in the history. Unfortunately however much I agree with we need to let go of our perfectionism, The Thief and the Cobbler might not be the best example in this scenario. Great video btw, as always, thank you Matt for your hard work!
This video came at the “perfect” time for me! I’m currently striving to wrap up the final steps in the production of my Debut Solo Album. 🎶 Starting the project was the hardest part. I made an ambitious deadline goal which I’ve already well surpassed. Still, it’s good I made the goal because it really kickstarted the creation of a lot of music that I simply would not have created otherwise. It was ordinate that I extend my goal. However, after passing the point of diminishing returns, I’ve realized that it’s time to do the second most difficult part of this whole adventure: finish it despite it’s imperfections. I’m really hoping that I can look back at this comment in a couple months with a release that I’m proud of. 🤞
I really liked the cinematography of this video. The concept of "good enough" made me think of the word atelophobia which means a fear of imperfection. I learned this word when deciphering my own perfectionism.
Thank you! As a perfectionist I really needed to hear this. Two years ago I learned that I love to read audiobooks that I like (science fiction), even though they are fiction I wouldn’t read otherwise, so it was something I would do for fun. Last year, I also found joy in reading paper books. And I didn’t have any pressure on myself because ‘I was not a reader’, so I didn’t need to accomplish anything. Since I read quite a few books, a lot to be me, I set a goal this year, one book a month (or if I had a busy month, 12 books this year). Jan and feb went great, when march came I started skipping days and quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to finish the book at the end of the month, so I stopped completely… I still listen to audiobooks because that is easier, but I still drown myself in guilt because I don’t read paper books as often, maybe once a week… But in a week I will get MANY new books on my birthday, because that’s basically all I’ve asked for, and I will not pressure myself anymore, I will read for fun, to dive into a different reality, and that’s what I love, so I shouldn’t let perfectionism stop me! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
For someone who struggles with perfectionism, I found these tips really useful. I'm going to try implementing them today to help with my school and personal goals. Thank you for a great video, Matt!
The struggle is REAL! I’ve forced myself to do the thing and then get so wrapped up that, yes, the law of diminishing returns takes over and so I love the deadline suggestion. And yes, this video IS 100%. 😂
Thank you so much for showing compassion towards the urge to strive for perfection. I find your video very helpful to any discussion about perfectionism and the relationship with the idea of perfection. I like to think about it like a plant reaching for the sun in order to grow and prosper. Sure it will never actually reach the sun, but opening up and facing the sun allows it to absorb light and transform it into something the plant can live from. And there is a competition amongst plants growing near eachother over their spot in the sunlight because it's such a useful source of energy.
"All important parts are there and no important part is missing" = done. Thanks, I needed that for my essays. I had this impossible task of writing about things I'm really passionate about in 800 words.
Thanks Matt! I also learned from a mentor to do things "plus one". Don't need to be perfect, just get things done one step further than is required - this creates a habit of pursuing excellence without being too hard on yourself.
Perfectionism is my the largest problem. And I think that's the psychological problem. My friends say that I don't respect myself, that can be true. I often use your ideas to work with myself and now I can see that I am getting better. Thnx Matt!
Maladaptive perfectionism gets a lot of people, including myself. Want things to work out, want it done right, want to be good at whatever I try. It's not always realistic and it occasionally stops me from taking further action on things. It could stop me from starting on things as well. Aiming for effort doesn't occasionally work either but hopefully it can change to where effort does pay off. Thank you for an incredible video!
This is exactly what I need to hear. I am overthinking the whole day what good habits should I start. Which is ironic that the act of pondering about it gives me harm than good.
Great video Matt. I've recently applied the quote "Done is better than perfect"( it is on my wallpaper hahah), and it has changed my life. Perfectionism was holding me back for so long, now that I've let go of it, I'm finally making progress and feel confident about achieving my goals. Perfectionism is seriously harmful.
* I feel this perfectionism def has held me back at certain times because ill do something and never be fully satisfied. The way you talk about it in this vid is very relatable and great!!*
this video highlighted the changes iv already made this year . I gave up on trying to make perfect and rather get things done . Iv achieved more and as a result iv become better with my craft
Ok. Lemme go and work on that seminar. Perfectionism has been a serious problem for me almost whole my life. Most of my anxiety spur from that.I never knew it until my therapist told me so. Thanks for this Matt ❤️
*The one issue* that maybe Im commenting on too early (incase it comes up in the video) is that the concept of what we percieve "perfect" to be, usually geared at a project is always changing. If it gets to the point that you believe it to be perfect, when you review it a month later or a year later, chances are youll find numerous areas of it that you would change. this is why get your projects to 80% and publish! Share! Get feed back, work this muscle and your work will improve exponentially!
I heard from another UA-camr about the 70% rule, his channel kicks ass! Whether it’s 90% or 70% - knowing when to stop and call it “done” is valuable. The channel is called Struthless - well worth checking out 😉
right i totally agree. hey btw claudia, i recently started my own channel if u wanna check it out, i talk a lot about well-being and self growth there☺️
When you have children , all the perfection goes out of the Window.. it will be your Best project , but brutally chaotic. My english isnt good enough, but you have encouraged me to write some words.Have a nice week. Lorea.
I needed to hear every single word you said in this video, thank you so much Matt. Notes have been taken and gratitude is all I have for you, Love from Chile :)
Yeah, indeed, all the life is a paradox. Just do as good as you can, that's it. Trying to be perfect in everything is to chase horizont. Matt's mom is completely right about this.
The thing that REALLY helped me overcome my perfectionism and use in as a strength is : The Pareto Principle. . Actually, it forces you to skip all the superfluous steps that don’t lead to your goal in a direct manner, or don’t lead to it at all and it’s just a false perception you have of them, because sometimes it’s all in your head. If you think about it this way, those are literally distractions, like any distractions. So it makes you focus on the main line of your project and not scatter down on apparently but not really helping things, that drains your energy more than anything. (sorry if my English isn’t perfect I am not a native, please correct me if there are mistakes I am trying to improve it!)
"It's gonna be a major pain in the ass, but it'll look amazing, and that's all that matters" i don't know how many times in my life i have said this of the projects i am assigned. can def fall into maladaptive perfectionism when given the chance lol
I think we are arguing the same point here. In no way am I supporting or suggesting buying TTCF or any of that trash… my original comment stated companies who you originally felt like there was no chance of buying opp with the steady incline in recent time ex) Apple, MSFT, TSLA, and so on….
I'd say we're are in the middle of the dip. We have another year or so of this to go. Dont buy too much now unless its from companies that have great financials and is just suffering because of the market itself. Those companies will bottom out at a certain point and then go sideways until the market and economy recovery and then the growth will happen. Paypal, Tesla, Facebook, netflix etc are a def no no right now. Leave them be they are all going a lot lower.
I have a blog post fully brainstormed. I just need to convert it into a story. And I'm stuck. And so I went to UA-cam. Going to go try and sit down and type it out. Thanks for the video!
To the *incredible person* seeing this, I wish you all the best in life❤ don't over blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn the skills needed and get after it, all the keys to a happy life is in your hands. Keep pushing.
Interesting topic! Perfectionism is a very controversial phenomenon, as it usually restrains us from taking real action. That is ultimately a self-defeating way to move through life. As, by avoiding mistakes at any cost, a perfectionist can make it harder to reach their own high goals.
I can totally relate with the 0 or 100% mindset and the deadline trick! I also found that my struggle with perfectionism has gotten much better after I learned more about entrepreneurship. Understanding the benefits of failing/ seeing it as part of the growth process were game changing!
Great video! Although on The Thief and the Cobbler it wasn’t as simple as Richard was a perfectionist this is true he wanted it to be his greatest work. The studio interference played a huge role in the delayed timeline that lead to WB dropping the project and creating this movie broke Richard. Just wanted to point that out cause I liken Richard Williams more to a David Fincher who does many takes to get what he wants. I feel like if Richard was that unreasonable Who Framed Roger Rabbit would never had been made. I just wanted to point that out cause I believe Richard Williams should be given a little more empathy, that movie not being made was not due to his perfectionism alone. No ill will just wanted to give Richard a voice, great video as always Matt take care.
I’m a disabled combat veteran with chronic back pain and a stay at home father to a toddler and crawling baby. Perfectionism is a luxury I’m RESTRICTED 🚫 to dream of lol. Efficiency and productivity in my current daily life is watered down to “Good Enough” during the day. Make final details, complete fundamental tasks and chores while kids are hibernating.
Its so interesting how has changed mi perception of your videos after have seen you máster course of youtube. I've neve been conscious about a roll, b roll and how music mix everthing. I learnt a lot!
This might have been great for me to watch last year when I kept "perfecting" my essay for a course I had basically already passed for like, two months I think? hhhh now I know better and know what I'll do next time :D
“If you try to be someone else, you’ll become nobody at all. The only great person you have the possibility of becoming is the greatest version of yourself, and that is a pretty great person.”
This video was 100% though.
you mean...perfection?
It was a great video, Matt. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks for the positive thumbnail.
Another amazing video coming into my life at the right time, so grateful for your work Matt, thank you so much!
Where has that blue denim shirt been hiding all this while!
Another awesome and helpful video. Thank you, Matt.
Thanks for this video! Setting realistic, attainable goals is really important.
yess i agree!
You’re awesome Matt! I’m gonna share this with my team - we all need it! Continued success!
“Hold us back from growth and rob us of opportunity”. This hit me😓😓
Somehow I needed that, and I’m not even doing anything lol. Thanks for that, and I’m glad the UA-cam algorithm liked it enough to pop it into my feed
Love your work. I am a true perfectionist and this makes so much sense for me. Thank you 👏
*The one issue* that maybe Im commenting on too early (incase it comes up in the video) is that the concept of what we percieve "perfect" to be, usually geared at a project is always changing. If it gets to the point that you believe it to be perfect, when you review it a month later or a year later, chances are youll find numerous areas of it that you would change. this is why get your projects to 80% and publish! Share! Get feed back, work this muscle and your work will improve exponentially!
whaaaszaaaaaaaaaap -
- Never reply to these numbers
I heard from another UA-camr about the 70% rule, his channel kicks ass! Whether it’s 90% or 70% - knowing when to stop and call it “done” is valuable.
The channel is called Struthless - well worth checking out 😉
I'm currently following the 5 minute rule, the 2 day rule, the 3 year rule and now the 90% rule 😉 MAXIMUM PRODUCTIVITY!!
Done is better than perfect
Love it Matt❤️❤️❤️
Love the B-Roll on this one!
The pieces of advice I got from this video are invaluable. Thank you Matt for creating this type of content that redefines the status quo.
right i totally agree. hey btw claudia, i recently started my own channel if u wanna check it out, i talk a lot about well-being and self growth there☺️
When you have children , all the perfection goes out of the Window.. it will be your Best project , but brutally chaotic.
My english isnt good enough, but you have encouraged me to write some words.Have a nice week. Lorea.
I needed to hear every single word you said in this video, thank you so much Matt. Notes have been taken and gratitude is all I have for you, Love from Chile :)
This was great, Matt. Thank you!
Yeah, indeed, all the life is a paradox. Just do as good as you can, that's it. Trying to be perfect in everything is to chase horizont. Matt's mom is completely right about this.
I’ve actually realized this in my own life but basically it’s all about the BALANCE (once again as in every other thing in life as well)
If you aim for perfection, you’ll never get done! Thanks for sharing
i agree!
The way that music hits in the very exact moment that it needs to is the 10% extra of this video.
This is your time as an investor to buy shares in any company you have always wanted to get into but felt like it was too late.
Underrated comment. Times like these are when people make real money.
Bought more FB and GOOG :) hope market drops more, more bargain for me!
I've had to learn this lesson a lot with making comics- knowing when to say "good enough" is a game changer 🎉
“Don’t be afraid of perfection, you’ll never attain it” - Salvador Dali
good quote!
I have a blog post fully brainstormed. I just need to convert it into a story. And I'm stuck. And so I went to UA-cam. Going to go try and sit down and type it out. Thanks for the video!
Shoutout to Matt for making a website just to sponsor Squarespace.
To say I needed this video is an understatement 😅😅😅
To the *incredible person* seeing this, I wish you all the best in life❤ don't over blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn the skills needed and get after it, all the keys to a happy life is in your hands. Keep pushing.
Go away
copy and paste, am i right? :)))
great way to start the morning!
Oh I like this! As a perfectionist myself, I love this method!
Interesting topic! Perfectionism is a very controversial phenomenon, as it usually restrains us from taking real action. That is ultimately a self-defeating way to move through life. As, by avoiding mistakes at any cost, a perfectionist can make it harder to reach their own high goals.
matt you're a genius storyteller! 💡
Yes, this is something I was told by more experienced scientists, and it only clicked with this video.
The drive of perfectionism is enough to cross restrictions.
More power to you.
06:02 Best cameo 😆🥰👌 Also, that last part really moved me. 😢 Thank you!
I tried to become a perfectionist and to my experience the slightest mistake easily frustate and make me lashout to my work, so i gave it up..
Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good or the done
I just can't believe I watched a video that referenced The Thief and the Cobbler. One of my favorites and such a sad history.
3.33 M Subscribers - just perfect Matt!👏👏👏
Another super video, thanks Matt
The best UA-camr I have ever followed.
Such a great new vision! 🙂 Thank you for the video! It'll be easier for me now to cut myself some slack while working! ))
Its so interesting how has changed mi perception of your videos after have seen you máster course of youtube. I've neve been conscious about a roll, b roll and how music mix everthing.
I learnt a lot!
Good enough! Thanks, Matt ✌🏼
Thanks for sharing the cautionary tale of the thief and the cobbler. Now I must see it.
I was just thinking about perfectionism because it makes me feel guilty most of the time :)
This might have been great for me to watch last year when I kept "perfecting" my essay for a course I had basically already passed for like, two months I think? hhhh now I know better and know what I'll do next time :D
Thank you Matt, this video inspire me to tell my perfectionist story
“If you try to be someone else, you’ll become nobody at all. The only great person you have the possibility of becoming is the greatest version of yourself, and that is a pretty great person.”
great vid!! :) i love the section of the video w the squarespace ad it was honestly rly entertaining lolol
Wow Matt be uploading so consistently these days!
perfectionism is a strenght to start with :D
