Why would a 8 year old be walking unattended? Oh yeah, I remember, we ran the streets too, unattended at that age. We were all over the place in a small city, but still a city. I remember several times cars pulling up ( always men) trying to get me to get in the car. I refused. When I told my mom, she just said not to get in the cars. All three of us continued to roam around wherever we wanted. Lucky to be alive today really.
I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. I remember lots of freaks. My sister and I walking home from school, we were stopped on two occasions by the same man with his genitals exposed asking us for directions. I was 8 and my sister was 6.

He was pretty aggressive saying he new my mom from somewhere and my mom sensed he was strange and said “no I don’t know you” and he kept asking what college she goes to and where she is from and my sister started blurting out where my mom went to college and some other stuff” my mom said sorry we have to go. When they left the mall, she saw police arresting him and asked what happened and they told her she is very lucky because he has a criminal history a mile long

America was a different place back then..way more “innocent”. Society was also different. Now society and people are on an downward spiral with no end.
We were allowed to play out unsupervised because our parents warned us over and over - so we knew to keep ourselves safe. My parents loved me as much as any parents could As a result we had freer more adventurous, less coddled childhoods. Also the average decent adult was willing to intervene and put a stop to anything that seemed dodgy regarding children- every child's safety was an adult's business. Very few children were ever abducted or killed and the law here in the UK was especially hard on child murderers - when they wound up in prison the other prisoners despised them and treated them like pariahs. It seems more recently that the law went soft on child killers. Sadly psychopaths like Alcala often learn a kind of superficial charm which could take in a more naive child.

I grew up in Mexico. I walked to the school every day unaccompanied by an adult, the same the other kids, and never happened us anything. We were poor but happy people. Those were good days.

Why was that precious little girl walking by herself? I don’t know if it cause those days were different but parents needs to protect their kids, hugged them and watch over them. These Killings and kidnapping of our kids been happening every decade, so sad. I’m glad she survived though.
America was a different place back then..way more “innocent”. Society was also different. Now society and people are on an downward spiral with no end.
We were allowed to play out unsupervised because our parents warned us over and over - so we knew to keep ourselves safe. My parents loved me as much as any parents could As a result we had freer more adventurous, less coddled childhoods. Also the average decent adult was willing to intervene and put a stop to anything that seemed dodgy regarding children- every child's safety was an adult's business. Very few children were ever abducted or killed and the law here in the UK was especially hard on child murderers - when they wound up in prison the other prisoners despised them and treated them like pariahs. It seems more recently that the law went soft on child killers. Sadly psychopaths like Alcala often learn a kind of superficial charm which could take in a more naive child.

I grew up in Mexico. I walked to the school every day unaccompanied by an adult, the same the other kids, and never happened us anything. We were poor but happy people. Those were good days.
