Got this ai box for a week now. It has a lot of flaws imo. Different launcher? Don't try it, it will crash the current launcher (quickstep) and restores to factory settings. Widgets, not available. Auto hide the navigation buttons on the left, not possible. The firmware is adapted by carlinkit in a way that customizing is just not possible. Really don't understand what is so positive about this tbox plus with all it's limitations.
I don't think I can use the box instead of android auto. I can't make calls when I am in the box's interface since I don't have sim in it and I can't use voice control to make a call either since the voice control button is interfacing with the box if android auto is not open. Also I cannot read or hear texts for the same reason if I am not using android auto. I like the functionality but I will use the tbox sparingly and keep using my carsifi adapter as my primary interface since it has android auto on my screen in under 15 seconds compared to approx 40 with the t-box plus

However, I recently deleted the original file (connection), and now I am asked to insert a pw before being allowed to enter the interface. Very annoying. It is a good thing that I had written down the pw, otherwise, I wouldn't be able to use the AI. Any ideas how to get the kit to sign me in automatically again? You would put this in a Saab if you have an aftermarket radio with Apple CarPlay and you want to be able to watch videos in the car, or you want to upgrade to wireless CarPlay. So in this mustang, this box gives Netflix, UA-cam and the applications that read engine data and pretty much any other all you want to install

My question, your top 5 boxes is android auto software built into these boxes so the mobile attached doesnt need the android auto app and the phone is just needed for the hotspot wifi?? The ability to have so many options in creating a better interaction really is a great thing. For somebody that is not a staunch hardcore car audiophile that wants something simple that can allow far greater usability and function this is fantastic. No need to deal with headunit replacement or integration worries. It is terribly simple and I think this sort of product is great for the use case it fits.
Yes!! I have aftermarket head units in my other cars for additional functionality, but that is quite impossible in the Mustang, so this is the next best thing

This is not correct and shows that you don't understand how to use it. The brand of phone you use is irrelevant. These apps run on this device, not your iPhone. The only thing you would potentially use your iPhone for odd to supply this device with internet access by connecting it to your iPhones WiFi hotspot

I've seen in a few videos of yours now that you recommend using the built in head unit software vs Apple Carplay/Android Auto. I exclusively use Android Auto because it has my music and maps built in. I know the head units have maps preinstalled and is taken care of through the gps antenna, but for the music, do you just bluetooth to the head unit? How is controlling your music through the head unit better/worse than controlling it through android auto? I also primarily use UA-cam Music so not sure if you have experience with that vs spotify. Lastly, if I get a 4g capable head unit and don't put in a sim, is it still worth it to use the head unit software vs android auto?
The problem with using Android Auto is that it replaces the head unit interface completely. The point of an android head unit is that it'll do the basic music and navigation, but also loads of other stuff too. To get the most out of it, you would install UA-cam music directly onto your head unit. But everyone has different perfects and you should ultimately do what you prefer.
Regarding 4G, if you're only using Android Auto, there's no reason to pay for a SIM. If you did switch to use the Android head unit directly, you could use a SIM or simply connect it to your mobile phone WiFi hotspot

I've given up on Android heads. I have a Passat B7 and they promise so much but are short on delivery. The last one I had boasted RDS but didn't have it. The DAB add on was both clunky flakey. I could get no help at all from the suppliers but buying from Amazon meant I could return them and get my money back. I bought a decent tablet, a car mount and connected it to my radio via an audio lead. I have it mounted above the existing radio and to the right so I can open apps, use SAT NAV ETC, without taking my eyes off the road. The apps do all I need, BBC Radio Player, UA-cam, VPN, Audible ETC, and I can use my existing DAB, FM, AM radio and bluetooth phone connection. I have downloaded the APP for the OBD ubit and That does the job also. The tablet is slower than my Pixel Smartphone but the whole thing works for me. Thanks for another interesting and informative video, I shall continue to be a subscriber as I enjoy your channel output.

Hey Len, depends if you're talking about Android Auto which is what most modern cars have. This is different from the Android OS that you have running on phones and tablets. Instead, Android Auto allows your car to stream selected applications from your Android phone. These boxes upgrade that experience by giving you full Android itself in your car, which gives you unrestricted access to run any app you want directly from your car
Do these AI boxes improve the sound quality of an OEM stereo? Do they add DSP and equalizer capability? I am a music guy, and my Ford Sync 3 system has poor sound quality. That would be a big deal to improve the sound of my system.

@@rrthree that is technically true because of the different technologies. When you use CarPlay, the AI box acts as a WiFi hotspot for your iPhone to connect to. If you want to watch movies, you'd have to disconnect, set your iPhone up as a hotspot and connect the AI box to that. There are two ways to get around this. The first is to not use Apple CarPlay. You can install Spotify or whatever music streaming app you have directly on the AI box. I'm not sure about Apple Maps, but Waze and Google Maps have repeatedly been voted better, but that's down to your personal taste. Anyway, my point is, you'd just not use CarPlay. The second option is to install a SIM into the AI box. That way, you would never need to play with the WiFi connection because the AI box would have it's own Internet connection

You either need to connect the box to a wifi hotspot (your mobile phone) or use 4g Sim card to get an internet connection to stream videos etc.

You can take it out of your iPad. That's actually what I did. Or you can add a line, you can get some good deals like £6 per month
Or if you don't want to use a SIM, you could just create a hotspot on your phone and connect to that via WiFi

It doesn't improve the sound by default, but you can install an EQ app - it is Android after all. That will give you a bit more control

So yes, this will work. You will plug it in to one of the USB C ports. The Mustang in this video also has factory wireless CarPlay

The second option is to install a SIM into the AI box. That way, you would never need to play with the WiFi connection because the AI box would have it's own Internet connection
