With regards to these vessels I wonder how long it would take to retro-fit them with ASW/ASuW/AAW systems for escort work in the South China Sea as they do seem to have some capability for upgrades... as well as the fact that the Z-9 and Z-8 helocopters are capable in this area as well... it could be viewed as a navy within a navy...
A good question. I don't know. The former Navy vessels might not be too difficult.
in peace time, they dont need coast guard for this kind of jobs. in war time, there was a report recently says, China has 200x ship building capacity compared to the US... I think they dont need the coast guard either...
@@yuey0602 At present they can out produce the US and probably most of the sea going nations together... as to the size of their Coastguard fleet it does seem to be on the large side with 164 vessels they could outgun most of the navies in the region as well...
@@hmmjedi so why would China want to arm the coast guard with navy level equipment at all... that will make those law enforcement ships becoming military target.
@@yuey0602 more a case of if War comes having an extra 160+ hulls you can arm up for escort duties and patrol would free up dedicated warships for other more offensive duties...
The numbers on the guard ships is related to tonnage, the higher the number the bigger they are. Also these are basically old retired ships from the PLA Navy i think you mentioned
I think this coastguard fleet with the addition of the massive 10,000 ship fishing fleet is a bigger threat than the PLA-N, it blurs the lines of engagement using civilian fishing boats and coastguard vessels as proxies to do military operations or just disruption to shipping trade.. At least with the PLA-N we can shoot at them as a legitimate military target where as with the fishing fleet and coastguard they are seen as civilian vessels or civilian operated vessels instead of military targets which ties our hands and restricts what we can do..

Vietnam was the first among claimant countries to employed fisher folks as saboteurs... basically Militias .
Japan followed suit with their supposedly "volunteer" fisher folks from Kagoshima to patrol near Tiaoyu Island .
PRC was a late comer in employing fisher folks as quasi coast guard personnel.

Interesting CCG vid👍I was surprised on size but with very little self defence these are like sitting ducks especially when operating illegal in other countries EEZ.
Thanks. Yes the vessels aren't heavily armed. All the larger vessels do have numerous 30mm and 12.7mm weapons for close in defence, but I didn't mention those. Interesting that even some of the larger vessels don't have a 76mm gun.
"Operating illegal in other countries EEZ"? The EEZ are international waters, the CCG is free to operate in whatever EEZ it wants. The EEZ only concerns the resources on the sea bed, not the surface waters.
If you start arming your coast guard boats with missile systems then you may as well paint them grey and put them under the navy. The US also has large cutters armed with guns but without missile systems.
@@chrisdoulou8149 in last few months CCG been ramming other country warships, protecting their illegal fishing boats. Lessons be learnt Falkland War n USA/Iran conflict is when push comes shove, someone is going get piss off n send missile from land/sea towards CCG.
Sorry you are only partially correct. According to The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) defines an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as generally extending 200 nautical miles from shore, within which the coastal state has the right to explore and exploit, and the responsibility to conserve and manage, both living and non-living resources. So not just sea bed. Including commercial fishing.
