Love this guy, always awesome useful information. After watching his video, I started using a pump and I aint going back to wasting our precious resource
Dude you are so freaking dope. Just bought my first tank about a month ago and knew nothing. Been watching your channel and have learned so much. Its just a little 20 gallon tank which turned out to be far more gorgeous than I thought such a small tank would be. I added bottled bacteria and a couple fish flakes every day for about a week. The tank cycled in about 3 weeks, which I was ecstatic about because everyone was saying it would take like 1-3 months to cycle and that was daunting, because every day that the tank didnt have fish in it. My kids were on my nerves about it. I put in 4 zebra danios, 1 cory cat, and 1 dwarf gourami. Id read that dwarf gourami didnt make good tank mates for active fish like danio, but the lady at the store said it will do just fine. It hasnt been to long, but so far its been just fine. So the problem I had when filling the 20 gallon with fish is that many of the fish that I wanted to put in the tank just werent suited for a small 20 gallon tank. So Im already on to my second tank. Ordered a 75 gallon tank with a Fluval 407 canister filter at the same store, but took my kids to petco that day and they had a 75 gallon tank on the shelf and they had a Fluval FX4. So I picked those up and canceled the order at the local store. I have a question. I understand that the FX4 is rated for a much bigger tank than 75 gallons, but will I be ok to run it with the 75 gallon, or should I return it and get 407? Also can I take the sponge filter from my 20 gallon and use it in the 75 gallon to jump start the good bacteria, or is the bacteria in the 20 gallon not established enough yet?
Thanks bro, Glad to hear you've been enjoying the channel! The FX4 could be overkill for the 75 but it never hurts to over filtrate. Since you've already got it I suggest you keep it. You never know when you'll need it for your next upgrade anyway 😁 I would leave the 20 gallon in tact for now as its still new and needs to mature. BUT good news is you can set up your 75 and add fish in same day if you follow this method - ua-cam.com/video/9Cuqylaak3E/v-deo.html I've done it successfully, many times already, good luck!
Love this video!! I went from using buckets to using a python connected to my sink thinking that was a game changer😂 I was wrong, now I’m about to upgrade to this!! This is THE game changer!
yup, for sure! lol Glad it was helpful! and when you need to gravel/sand vacuum I still use python for that, but I have a better method as well...check it out here - ua-cam.com/video/gmb6jEqPOhg/v-deo.html

Thanks Maria! Great question, I still use python for that but I have a better method for that too. Check it out here - ua-cam.com/video/gmb6jEqPOhg/v-deo.html
Ordered the Vivoson 800GPH pump and 100 feet of tube today 👍🏻👍🏻…got the extra footage of tube just incase I need to run it up to my 2nd floor bathroom …fish tank is down in my man-cave so I’m hoping my kitchen sink on my first floor will produce enough water pressure so I don’t have to go up to second floor …was only $8 more going from 50’ to 100’ so I went for it 👍🏻👍🏻
Just found your channel to get water out of my low level tank and also to put water back into my tank after water change. I used your link to purchase the pump you talk about in the video. THANKS very much!
My unk has been doing his changes with a pump for years he use to do the whole siphon thing prior its a true game changer thanks for the heads up KEV 🐐💙
After watching your video @kaveman aquatics , I got a vivosun pump and just tried it out with my 75 and 60 gallon tanks. It was like a MIRACLE!! It took almost NO time at all and there was a lot less water all over the floors compared with my buckets. That said, I wanted to drain into my sink because the CICADAS have invaded the mid-Atlantic in the US, so I attached the pump to my long python hose and drained into the sink. I also didn't want to use a tub to refill since my water pressure for refilling is totally fine. So I retrofitted my python fill-hook (as well as my siphons for those targeted/substrate cleaning days) using python's quick connectors so that I can now easily swap out the vivosun pump for either the syphon or re-filling hook. Thank you for the inspiration!! The amount of time I got back in my day is priceless!
Kev this is great! I’ve always loved the Python over buckets for my 56 column but hate wasting so much water and it’s gotten slower over time. Trying this out for sure. Thank you!
Hey brother man, recently purchased this pump and hose. Been a life saver and game changer for me. Have a bad back, bad knees, so this set up has really made water changes a breeze now. Thanks for the info.
I know I may be late to the party but still hope you're commenting back on your vids! Love the help you provide. I have 2: FX4 filters that have the utility hose attachment on them. Why don't you use this option to remove/ add water to your tank(s)? Thanks KaveMan!
Nice video you’ve helped me heaps. I’ve noticed can drain and refill tanks through fx6 filters. I drain using fx6 filter but have never refilled using it cause I don’t want chlorinated water killing my bacteria. Use buckets instead as I like to give prime atleast 15 minutes before adding to the tank (just my preference) the pump idea is awesome though can pump from a tote a lot easier then pouring in by hand. All your videos are super useful. Keep up the good work
EVERY video EVERY time so so informative! Unlike any other videos I've watched on keeping my cichlids! So glad you're on here man. I've learned a lot even though I've had my cichlids for 1 1/2 years. Thank you and God bless
I use a smaller pump to recirc water to cool my wort in hombrewing and it made me think of something like this. My question though is there a wayto use an inline pump to also vac out the gravel? Two birds and such.
@KaveManAquatics I definitely will as I can use all the help I can get! I actually just ordered last night my water pump, 50ft hose for my water changes (super excited to see the difference), also upgraded filtration so it'll be a great journey to learn and grow in the hobby
Great question! I still use the python for that, but I have a better method of doing it while the tank fills up! check it out - ua-cam.com/video/gmb6jEqPOhg/v-deo.html
Man, at those temps I can only think of filling up a tote and floating some frozen bottles of water to get the temp down before sending it to the tank. Thats rough bro. Or the much more expensive route it to get a chiller for the tank.
But what about all the uneaten food, fish poop and all the other mess that gets collected at the bottom and underneath the gravel over time... Does this pump pick it all up or it is simply just to drain the tank for a water change Beautiful tank by the way I have 2 120litre tanks, both african cichlids.. But Im hoping someday, one day.. I will get a tank like yours 😍
No this is only for water changes. For vacuuming I still use the python but I do it a bit different. Check this out - ua-cam.com/video/gmb6jEqPOhg/v-deo.html
Do you have a recommendation for me for smaller tanks? I am disabled and use a walker. I put the 5 gal bucket on my walker and siphon the water out, push it to the sink and empty with a water jug. Repeat many times. The problem is when taking the clean water, I have to use the jug to refill the tank, which is very time consuming but also very hard on my shoulders since I am lifting it upward to the top of the tank and having to hold it while slowly adding. ( the python would not be helpful for me as I could not deal with all that hose and my walker). I just need something to stick in the bucket and do the work for me. Thanks so much for any recommendations!
How were you able to have your Texaco clean you didn't have to clean it before you added the water. My brother gave me a tank and I am still cleaning the rocks. How do you keep the tank so clear to the point where you didn't have to clean it before the refill
I only have a 55, and don't have multi tank syndrome anytime soon. So I do like when I stole gas from my neighbors. Then the bartender method of refill. One refilling while pouring. ;) But this is an excellent video man.
May be a very dumb question but does anyone know if the same could be achieved with an internal canister filter instead of buying a water pump? I was gonna get a second filter for my tank and was hoping if this is possible that it would save some money. Or would it be better to get a water pump instead of a second filter. I currently have a 300litre decently stocked tank with in lid filtration that the tank came with
Love the video. Thank you. Does anyone know if I can attach a siphon gravel vacuum attachment to suck up waste with the pump? Or will that damage the pump? Thanks.
Cool! Quick question: If you have FX6's as your filters, why not use their ability to drain out and suck in water? I do that with my FX4 and it works like a charm (especially of you're already using a container and not pulling water directly from your faucet).
Great questions...but a few reasons. 1, the Fx6 wont drain the tank as fast as the pump can. 2, its not designed to suck water in through the valve so I really wouldnt want to utilize it for that. and 3, constantly opening and closing that drain valve can have potential for it eventually leaking. I've heard many stories of people that had to eventually just silicone that thing shut...so imo the pump is faster and safer and wont cause damage to a very expensive filter 😊
Nice idea but what if you have gravel and sand in your aquarium? Will the dirt from the gravel be removed if we go about removing water just like you showed without disturbing the gravel? And if we disturb the gravel, the dirt from it will make the whole water dirty and I don't really do 100% water changes to any of my aquariums. I mostly do 20% water change or 50% when the ammonia is high!
No this method is just for water changes, meaning for those that dont vacuum during every water change. You would still need to vacuum your substrate based on your own schedule. I still use the python for vacuuming but I also do it a bit differently, I do it while the tank is filling with the pump. Here's a quick video - ua-cam.com/video/gmb6jEqPOhg/v-deo.html
Do you have a way of using this pump to also vacuum? I currently have the python and I'm trying to figure out a way to not only drain the tank for water changes but vacuum at the same time
I'm gonna try this as used connectors to my tap and just wasn't working. Mentioned this method to my partner. How do you time the water stopping from fulling the tank? Does it stop the minute you turn pump off? Also, cab anyone recommend a hook bracket please to clamp the piping over the tank in place as need a large one and don't know what they called.
Any idea how much seachem safe to use on a 75g tank? I have a bottle left over from dechlorinating a tank after nuking it but was always afraid to use it for water changes.
Hi I have been given a pump Like this but it can’t syphine the water up to the highest of the tank )a biorb on a unit does that mean the pump Just isn’t strong enough ? It’s 300 l a hour
Hi KaveMan, my well water has a very low PH level. Its around 6.3 ph. I have a soda ash injection system to keep my ph at a level that will not corrode my pipes...around 7.3. When I need to make water changes, how do I ensure the water going into the 125 gal tank is conditioned and the right ph level prior to pumping into the tank? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
The part on adding new water back was what I was curious about. For months I have been having to use 1 Gallon water jugs filling them up and mixing my water conditioner and my baking soda for every jug and having to add each jug one by one. I was trying to figure a safe way to add tap water faster without killing my fish because I'm going to me going with a 55 gallon tank soon and I'm gonna need a faster way to add tap water after a water change. Problem though is making sure my fish don't get burned by the tap water as the tap water is flowing into the tank with them I hope the water conditioner will make the water safe faster then the fish get touched by the tap water. By the way I've always used the Aqua Safe Water Conditioner it's a yellow bottle and its a clear liquid.
Not sure about that brand of water conditioner so can't have an opinion on it. What I can say is that Seachem Prime will absolutely make the water safe for the fish during your water change. Watch this to understand how I use Prime during these water changes - ua-cam.com/video/xy3vlrPA-BQ/v-deo.html
What's the trick to work from tank to tank while filling? Even with the python, the water pressure builds up too quickly and either pops the siphon on the sink or the hose off of the pump. Any suggestions?
You must have a lot of pressure for that to happen. Get yourself an adapter for your sink that can connect a regular garden hose to it and fill with that 😊

what pump would you recommend for a 30 gallon tank? also would you use a pump for a 10 gallon? 3.5 gallon most likely wont need a pump lol
I wouldnt really use a pump for a 30 gallon. The python will drain that tank pretty quickly 😊
Love the video. Thank you. Does anyone know if I can attach a siphon gravel vacuum attachment to suck up waste with the pump? Or will that damage the pump? Thanks.
Great idea 👍✌️🇨🇦
Glad you found that helpful! 😁💪
Question if I have discuss , can I do this , is safe?
How small of a water change should I do if it’s the first time using soft water I haven’t ever had a water softener system until now
Go 25% and keep watch of your fish. test your water daily for any major changes to your PH.
Do you have a way of using this pump to also vacuum? I currently have the python and I'm trying to figure out a way to not only drain the tank for water changes but vacuum at the same time
Kev How Do You Clean Your Gravel With This Setup?
ua-cam.com/video/tTSGJm9wyco/v-deo.html
I'm gonna try this as used connectors to my tap and just wasn't working. Mentioned this method to my partner. How do you time the water stopping from fulling the tank? Does it stop the minute you turn pump off? Also, cab anyone recommend a hook bracket please to clamp the piping over the tank in place as need a large one and don't know what they called.
Now is time to go bigger✌👍
No more slow cleaning
Exactly! 😁💪
hi? were you buy big plastic stone on left side?
Check my shop, link in the description
Hey Cave great video . Did you use a pump when you are vacuuming the tank ?
No when I vacuum I still use the python for that 😁
Any idea how much seachem safe to use on a 75g tank? I have a bottle left over from dechlorinating a tank after nuking it but was always afraid to use it for water changes.
Very very little. Like 1/16th of a teaspoon. I would go with Prime for a 75. Less chances of overdosing.
Hi I have been given a pump
Like this but it can’t syphine the water up to the highest of the tank )a biorb on a unit does that mean the pump
Just isn’t strong enough ? It’s 300 l a hour
hii may ik how to make aged waterr? thank youu
Ya man thank you, keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
is it an issues hooking up the hose end to the water pump?? I'd think it would just blow off?
Nope I use a clamp that screws on tight very easily.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
You gotta tell us what type of light you have cause that sun set mood is crazy, lol
Its a Current USA Sattelite...check it out here - kavemanaquatics.com/product-category/equipment/lights/
If your saying the system is keeping it at 7.3 you're good to go. If your fish do well at 7.3 you dont need to adjust it.
Hey can I use this method for saltwater tanks?
Absolutely! 😊
