- So which is better, the Eheim Quick Vac Pro or the Fluval Pro Vac Aquarium Vacuum? Both these fish tank and aquarium vacuums are great but which one should you buy? BUT what else can you also do to make them even better? :)
So an absolutely essential tool I could not live without in the fish keeping hobby is the @EHEIM and @Fluval Aquatics gravel vacs and aquarium vacuums but this video will help you decide on what one is better and what gravel vac would suit you and your aquarium.
Gravel vacs and aquarium vacs allow you to keep your substrate clean between water changes and deep cleans but also allows you to give your sand and stone a thorough deep clean on water change day and the days between your aquarium deep clean.
The video will also show you how to upgrade both the Eheim vac and Fluval Vac to make them perform at their best and optimum.

You can buy fine wire mesh and cut it to size to fit the Fluval and it works perfectly
what thickness is best?
I like that with the Fluval we can change water, that's a + for Fluval. Great revue btw thanks!
NO ONE LIKES REDUCED SUCTION....I died
No one like reduced suction!…. Fact 😂
I have the Fluval Pro Vac with sand and use the extension and stick it right in the sand and pull it out and it gets everything, it wont do much if you just waft it over the sand you need to get stuck into it, but be care full if you use it with fish in the tank I sucked up to and they where fine, so don't remove the mesh
Informative and useful video, made my decision after this----- thanks 👍
Thanks for this, I couldn't find stock of the Eheim anywhere in Aus right now so went with the fluval and will try a spa filter sock attached to the water change adapter as the substrate is sand.
I bought wire mesh for my fluval and cut that to size and put a bit of floss inside and that does the job for me!
What a great idea Joanne!
where did you get the wire mesh for fluval? tq
Even buying a cheap mesh filter sock and cut and glue would work.
I bought one of those plug in Fluval gravel cleaners. To be fair I am not really impressed with the suction of it. It really is not up to the job. It is an expensive piece of plastic really. It needs a more powerful motor. I reuse the cotton filters so many times until they need replacing. I have also cut out some very fine micro mesh to fit. It saves having to buy their expensive filters. I also have a Python gravel cleaner. This is pretty good, especially for draining and replacing water, but the only problem with it is the amount of water that can be wasted by running the tap to create a decent vacuum. The other problem is you can soon run out of water in your aquarium before you have properly cleaned it. You can clean the gravel without the coldwater tap on, but it's not really any different to using a cheap syphon pump. I just wish someone would bring out a decent gravel cleaner for once, unless anyone has any feedback on a decent one that they have used...🤔
Excellent review - thank you.
Thank you. I appreciate the video.
Thanks! Great review, phew! nearly bought a Fluval
Glad it helped.
The Eheim does it for me out of the 2 but only once upgraded.
'The only downside is your fish may be mangled by the propellor...' :D
🤣🤣🤣
It seems like These vacs have a lot of flaws that need adapting, not a cheap item 52 pounds plus filters etc, but still require improvement.thanks for the information
Nice video, thank you. The nozzle for the Eheim make sense to me but I don’t understand how the extensions reduce the flow. Not arguing, just learning if you care to explain what I am guessing is physics?
The longer the extension the weaker the vortex will be from the propeller making the suction not as strong than if it were removed.
Happy viewing and thank you for the feedback! 😁
think about it this way, let's use an exaggerated example and say you had a six foot extension, that tiny pump is now trying move a larger volume of water and is also further away from the pump itself thus reducing flow.
Makes sense I suppose. My mind doesn’t grasp the physics when it’s in the tank. Pumps and longer tubes I totally get. I suppose it’s the height difference I was thinking of and not the volume. Thanks
Do they have a minimum depth requirement? How small of a tank can they be used on? I can’t find any info on either question
For the Fluval, you just have to cover up the impeller with water. The plastic temovablebit HAS to be on. For some reason, the suction action doesn't work without it.
The problem I've had with all 3 of mine is that water leaks from around where the filter housing meets the vacuum (it's not a tight seal). So if the top of the vacuum sticks above your water line, water will be gushing out of it; which can get messy in smaller tanks. I only use it in my 29 gallon. Not my 10 or 5.
Thank you! Is the cord part of the Fluval fully submergible in water? I have a very deep tank and can’t find any info on this part.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that the fluval also has a water exchange valve (tube sold separately)
Probably didn’t mention it because it doesn’t work that well. Moves water very slowly and you are still working with buckets. The thing to keep in mind when using these things with buckets is that you can only siphon from the bucket down to the min. water line of the power vacuum and it doesn’t have enough head to raise water from the floor level up over the side of the tank.
what thickness of filter floss are you putting in the fluval?
Instead of the 3D printed tube, you could also use tubing with the correct ID. Thanks for the comparison video.
Agreed and have linked the right tube size in the description also 👍🏻
I watched your video on Eheim Quick Vac Pro VS Fluval Pro Vac Aquarium Vacuum. I am not sure if I understand correctly, are these submersible? I beleive I heard the Eheim is, I am not sure about the Fluval with the electrical cord. I have a 30" deep aquarium, will it extend 30" into the aquarium? If it can, does it lose suction?
Thank you, Steve
Yes both are submersible and the deeper they go the suction gets stronger due to the water pressure.
I was about to purchase the Eheim because I prefer the cordless option but did I understand correctly that the Fluval is a better choice for gravel substrate because the gravel will get clogged in the opening of the Eheim? Is there a modification that could be used to prevent that. Like maybe covering the 20 mil cut piece with a piece of mesh?
Yes it should be very easy.
If you have or know someone with a 3d printer it should be easy to print out the 20mm collar with your choice of mesh size at the end all as one piece.
I would also suggest trying one that has a slightly smaller open end and another slightly larger to see which you prefer.
I have gravel substrate (across 4 smaller tanks) and personally am going for the Eheim, and trying out my own suggestions above.
Interessantes Video, toll erklärt 👍
With the fluval, can you fill the cartridge with poly fill ? Thank you .
You can yes as that’s what I do. Only down side though compared to the highly compressed fluval pads is a lot more misty type water from broken down stuff travels though it back out into the tank.
I wonder how these work on carpeted aquariums, as my tank is all covered in plants...
How do you cut the mesh plastic part off from the fluval vac? I just purchased one and watched your video but cant figure out how to cut that part off?
I really like the idea of these things and want to be impressed with them, but I'm still underwhelmed. . I find pegging a filter sock to the insidei of a bucket and siphoning using a piece of hosepipe into the filter sock is far more impressive. Then, just pour the bucket of water back into the tank when full. The suction of the siphon is vastly more powerful..
That's a great idea, but as explained in this video (I think) the reviewer describes a scenario where you're siphoned down to 50% and you still have a lot of detritus to clean up. I appreciate your suggestion . . . just pour it back in and repeat. I just took delivery of the Fluval and I want to try and see if I'll get the desired results without having to do the bucket thing. I have an overcrowded due to overly happy fish who love parenthood and have a lot of cleaning up to do!
I would be interested to hear how you get on, but I personally don't see the pouring of the bucket of water back into the tank as an issue at all. Overall I would love to see one of these products that actually did work really well, but as yet I'm still waiting
i've had both of these, but currently have the fluval.
I found the capacity on the Eheim was much better. My tank of 3ft deep and I do use the extension. so I will try without it!
I do think the Ehiem is better.
I think they both good in their own right but the Eheim pips it for me :)
does anybody know what motor the eheim uses? or what are the (voltage) specs of it, and if its brushless motor?
For now im going to try 1.5v USB AA rechargeable batteries. Better for environment i think.
I have a homemade one that is made with a siphon and a powerhead some filter floss and an intake Sponge Filter as it diffuser for the water to go back into tank I will put that one up against any store-bought one this thing works amazing I saw it on UA-cam I can't take credit for it but it is an amazing piece of equipment
do you happen to know the link?
Unfortunately no I don't I'm sorry
I keep looking for it and I can't find that
@@joeader6046 its alright thank you
I bought the eheim and it arrives within a few days. I have my aquariums where in one there are guppies and in another I have shrimps. Taking into account what you explain about the propeller, how likely is it to destroy the shrimp? Is there an upgrade to protect the propeller?
greetings from Argentina.
It will cause some damage I’m afraid if not kill them. It’s a hard one as you can’t really cover it up as would then become useless :s
Personally I still use it but with absolute caution and keeping an eye on any shrimp close to it.
If you wanted to, cut an acrylic circle to glue over the hole and then drill a hole in it so it’s smaller and shrimp won’t be able to get in. Obviously this just removes the ability to vac bigger bits but will mean the shrimp are safe :)
I've just bought another eheim one, some good info there mate!
Cheers Ashley! Have you laid off sucking up the sand now? 😂
Yeah careful with it now 😉😂
@@ashleycornell6625 😂😂
My tank is 30” tall, do you think the eheim is long enough?
You can fully submerge it!! ;)
Why were the links removed, boss?
Shouldn’t have been 🤔
Will check tomorrow when on the laptop.
Will these work for turtle tanks??
Yep
I have the Eheim and the suction is weak. I say weak!😂
I like the idea though. If the Fluval is stronger I might try it. Though I prefer the simplicity of the Eheim. But did I mention the suction?
Anyone know if these are safe to use in a tank with snails? Will the snails be sucked up or will they be ok?
Usually these are not quite strong enough to suck up snails and even if it does you have time to turn it off or pull the vac away.
If you are worried go with the fluval so it has the guard on it :)
I have Eheim like this and one from sunsun thet have battery you can charging agen and it have more power then Eheim vacum
You now you can get rechargeable bateries
Can someone please post the dimensions of the oval shape of the Eheim? I am interested in the narrower direction of the oval. Is it less than 2 inches wide” (50.8 mm)?
Get a 🐍 python gravel vac.
So you can only hit the top?
Hay Payno,
What do you mean sorry?
@@TANK-TV well...u cant bury the end like you might with a regular siphon when cleaning sand..
No but don’t forget they advertised as gravel vacs and not for sand.
With that said only the Fluval can be buried into the stones because of the guard over the propeller.
Get rid of the damn background music. It is tolerable for the first couple of minutes. But 16 minutes of it, while trying to concentrate on the narrative, is too much.
i hate background music in every video that has it unless it's at .0002% volume and not noticeable unless i'm really trying to hear it. Kaveman Aquatics is guilty of this too, frustrating.
fluval seemed to do the better job in my eyes...
German made always good bro.
Agreed!
Ur discus need a bigger tank
Was a temp tank while moving, they reside in a 1000ltr
It’s called an impeller not a propeller. 😊
Look, it's the centerpiece of the party
@@bojohannesen4352 😆
Dude get a real tank those fish are way to damn big for that tank cruel
Id check out the other channel videos and why they are in there 👍🏻
This is 1 of 7 tanks and a temp housing away from their 1000ltr plus 350ltr sump set up.
