Get Opera GX here and use the pop out player to watch this video while you work!: operagx.gg/IFinishedAVideoGame Thanks to everyone who's commented so far and sent such awesome messages of support. It's been a very tough year but today feels like it could be a real turning point. Enjoy the video, have a great Sunday and tell me your favourite non-Wolverine X Man of all time! Call me an edgy 90s loser but damn do I love Cable
Thanks my friend. When I started making this it was only meant to be a shorter video but it became a real happy place away from all the surgery complications. I think that's likely why it ended up sprawling so big!
My man really said, "Not now Cancer, I got xmen games to play" hope treatments are going well. Can't wait to dig into this video (over the course of several days no doubt)
To be quite honest - this video was a really great way to escape all the rubbish I've had to deal with over the last few months. It's probably why it ended up sprawling so heavily - it was just nice to be reading, playing and writing and not thinking about the rest of the world!
Chbb@IFinishedAVideoGame Thanks for working so hard on this excellent retrospective. Glad this work helped you escape your personal problems. If you're interested, could you do retrospectives on the Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon series? Those are three of my favorites to watch.
This is why I watch your channel: Context. Your choice to draw attention to 'setting the scene' for each game's release really elevates the experience of watching/listening. It helps view every detail as just that, details. But what was the designers intent....
I do really love doing that and I think it sets my channel apart. Reviews are all well and good but it's cool to be transported back to that time and really feel the atmosphere of the industry when these games came out!
I love listening to the snippets of "what happened to X company" before and after the game They just provide such good context alongside the games story and development.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Honestly, considering everything you're going through, it's pretty damn inspirational, and it's a hellova niche. Wishing you all the best, health-wise.
Not usually one to comment but this video has immediately become one of my favourites on all of UA-cam. The level of research and your ability to bring it all together into a cohesive narrative made this so fun to watch, this is such an important piece of journalistic and archival work, you should be extremely proud of yourself! And to be able to put something out of this quality during cancer treatment is genuinely inspirational, all the best buddy, can't wait to see what you do next :)
Thanks very much my friend I really appreciate that. I'm a huge fan of narrative history so I always try to take the facts and blend them into something that is enjoyable to listen to! It's nice to feel like you've experienced the story even if you missed out! Glad you enjoyed it!
I didn’t realize you were dealing with cancer treatment these past few months. I would like to send my most sincere thoughts, I wish you all the best. When I was in the 7th grade my mother underwent major surgeries for her cancer. I may not have had it personally, but I most definitely empathize and can say fuck cancer. Best to you my friend, you are by far and away my favorite video essayist on UA-cam.
That really means a lot to hear. It's been extremely hard on me and Steph and sometimes even when you're feeling okay, just knowing you're 32 with cancer is enough to derail your whole day. But things are looking up at the moment. I'm hoping that the end of the year will be a lot better than the start!
Watched the entire video now and just wanna say: dude, please don't get stressed over UA-cam. These are some of the best retrospectives on UA-cam and they're well worth the wait. Health comes first, always.
It can be tough though my friend because I still need to earn money and have something to come back to when I'm healthy. I think it would just be a little easier if UA-cam didn't bombard it's creators with emails and analytics that is entirely geared towards pushing you to release new videos! When you're dealing with something massive it can really create a lot of pressure!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I can imagine that the UA-cam analytics can make you feel uncomfortable. Think of yourself first though, many fans will patiently wait 👍
I think calling someone of your caliber a ‘content creator’ is frankly an insult. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a content creator but I think it grossly undersells your ability to make these huge retrospectives. You’re as much of a filmmaker or documentarian as anyone else is and I’m glad to see that you love doing it and that it brings you some peace-because I will continue to watch these as long as you continue to make them!
That's extremely kind my friend. I really appreciate it and honestly comments like this really give me the motivation to keep going - especially after a year like I've had!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame in all seriousness though, your writing is so engaging that it really does help me get out of my own head in the evenings. It really comes across just how much time and passion you sink into your scripts
Thanks my friend. If you can believe it I actually went into this naively thinking it would be a more straight forward video just because none of the games are crazy complicated. Little did I know I was opening a can of licensing and publishing history that goes VERY deep indeed! Hopefully it makes for a good video!
There's really something to be said about a person who can put together a SIX HOUR RETROSPECTIVE while simultaneously battling CANCER - my man here is a real-life Deadpool! With less swearing and swords.
Honestly it hasn't been easy. I've said in a few comments otherwise but I basically couldn't stand or sit for long periods of the production and I did a lot of the voice work basically lying down! Luckily things are a lot better at the moment and while I've got a bit of a way to go yet - I'm feeling really positive about the next few months
Man, I love your videos. I watched the vagrant story, castlevania and metroid videos at least four times or more from start to end. I wish you the best.
Just when the world needed him most…the professor X of video game retrospectives came back! Seriously you make the best shit, can’t thank you enough for the hours of joy you have brought me.
Thanks so much my friend that's really generous of you. Also the Professor X of video game retrospectives is actually quite close to the truth - I've not been able to stand up for most of the production of this one!
Man i can't stop from coming back rewatching all these retrospectives, it's insane how they stand so far above any retrospectives i've seen on youtube before, triple length documentaries that's both entertaining, nostalgic and soothing to watch. It sure shows the extraordinary amount of work you put into it. Hope for you to get well soon, and thanks for another great vid!
That's extremely nice of you to say my friend. They really do take a huge amount of work so it's great to feel like they are appreciated. It's so easy to get in your own head about this sort of stuff - especially when you have to wait so long between uploads!
I am saving this video for my night shift as I have the whole month on that shift. Been eagerly waiting and patiently checking your channel every couple of days for this video and have rewatched the Vagrant Story video around 4 times because I love your content so much! Just wanted to writee a comment to let you know i'm really grateful of your hard work and dedication on high quality content. Much love, man!
That's really cool to hear. I hope this video gets you through a couple of rough ones! Also it's especially nice to know there is such love for the Vagrant Story video - that's my personal favourite so it's like hearing one of my kids is top of the class haha!
To say I’ve been looking forward to this treat - nay, a whole feast - would be a major understatement. I’m sure you’ve heard this a gazillion times by now, but this level of thoroughness in covering major franchises whole and the engagement your content provides (and I mean it, I am ENGROSSED) is the best in the game, full stop. Matt, my dear man, sending love and wishing you the best of health!
Ah that's so nice to hear. It can be really easy to get in your own head about the quality while you're putting these together so knowing that people are enjoying it really means a lot - especially after the year I've had! Hopefully this one sticks around and the channel gets a bit more on last years trajectory again!
I love how you're telling the story chronologically, instead of, for example, an opening chapter on the franchise history, followed by all the games individually. This really creates an awesome narrative, that's perfect for binge watching these 6 hours ;)
I've always felt that's the proper way to do a retrospective! It should be a proper journey through time rather than just a bunch of modern reviews stitched together! I'm glad it's come together nicely in this video! Thanks for watching!
Watching youtube is the only 'streaming service' I use at all. Your channel is my favorite one and the content you upload never fails to be of suburb quality and a real treat. I have watched every one of your videos and will continue to do so. Thank you for all that you do and I hope you recover well (I haven't finished this video yet if there is an update on that).
Thanks so much my friend. It really means a lot to know my work means that much to you. I promise I'll keep going and bring you all another video before the end of the year!
I am genuinely blown away by the research, work and general effort that goes into your videos. It is very much appreciated and I have enjoyed every second of it. Thank you so much for sharing such amazing content despite UA-cam's stupid algorithm. Being a huge fan of the X-Men since the early 90s, this was an extremely captivating watch for me! I did have to take one break through the six hours, though. ;) Kudos, man! Hope you get better as soon as possible!
Thanks very much. I went really deep with this one just because working on it was a really nice escape from everything going on. I could just block out the rest of the world and do a bit of writing and eventually it spiraled into this six hour monster!
58:32 Oh man, I vividly recall playing the six-player X-Men arcade setup decades ago, at what was once known as the Namco Cyber Center at Southland Mall in Hayward, California. I had relatives from Florida come to visit, so my family managed to take over the entire machine and just plow away until credits. Those were magical times.
6 Hours is excessive, and I LOVE excess. This is going to entertain me for the rest of work, my commute home, cooking dinner and it'll be my film tonight too. We are truly spoiled by you.
Unfortunately I pretty much only know how to do excessive at this point. Thank god that UA-cam doesn't have an editor system like the publishing world - I'd be chewed out in seconds!
As someone who nearly lost both parents due to cancer and an X-Men fan that was there when all these games were released, I salute you and say thank you for this. Sending you the best wishes for your treatment and a speedy recovery. Well done mate.
Thanks my friend I really appreciate it and I'm also pleased to know you're parents made it through! Hearing stories of people that won out really does lift me!
I feel like there is a bit of a growing trend on UA-cam of people advertising "complete" or "ultimate" retrospectives that basically hardly go into the actual substance of the franchise! I really want to make sure that people know they're getting their money's worth with my videos!
Also, dude the fact you put this out while having cancer is inspiring! I've been dealing with a lot lately, but your videos are always comforting and they inspire me to keep writing essays, so thank you. You're the man!
Thanks my friend. It's been extremely tough and probably has made the video about double as long and take double as long to produce but I'm happy it's finally out now. I'm going to try and focus on getting something else out a little quicker while I've got a break from treatment!
You calling Kotick a ghoul genuinely made me gasp, I think that's the most damning thing you've ever said about someone on this channel which means you KNOW he's bad lol
It's tough because originally I had a section in there about how he was a very successful businessman but ultimately I just thought - does that even balance out all the negative things he's done? People who have lost their jobs? People who have suffered abuse? The wider damage to the industry? Sure the guy has created some mega franchises but the cost has been dramatic and I think we'd all genuinely be better off without his influence.
The sheer consistancy in the quality of uploads on this channel is honestly astonishing, you never miss dude, I can without a doubt say that this is currently my youtube channel
That's great to hear because it often doesn't feel like it from my end! It can be really hard to balance what's going to be a "hit" along with what I actually want to work on so hopefully this one rides the line well! God knows I could use it after the year I've had!
I dont know what kind of cancer you have and you dont have to tell anyone. As for myself I had cancer at age 29. It definitely changed me as a person in many ways. First couple of years after surgery and all, were disjointed. I kept focusing on the things I love and it helped the most. I salute you for still making a video, pushing through and continuing with what you love. Hope everything only gets better for you!
I really feel that. I've become far more hypochondriac than I once was - apparently it's quite common but I'm dreading getting a cold or the fly and having my lymph nodes swell up because I'm sure it'll freak me out! But yeah thanks so much for the kind words. It means a huge amount
That's really kind of you to say. I really spend a lot of time over the scripts and never want to put out something that's repetitive or has nothing interesting to say. Hopefully it comes through!
You are the best youtuber on the platform, hands down... I use your videos for relaxing, eating, sleeping, entertainment, you name it. I've watched your metroid and castlevania videos maybe 4-5 times each and the other ones atleast one or two times. The amount of work and research are astonishing. Thank you❤ I dont care when you release videos, when you do, I'll be here.❤
That's honestly amazing to hear. I genuinely appreciate it so much. The idea that people use my videos to relax is something that really means a lot to me. The world is so messy and chaotic at the moment and knowing I'm putting a bit of good out into it is really awesome.
It's so good to see you back, and exploring the property I'm most obsessed with right now! I recently continued reading Claremont's X-Men saga after years of hiatus, and JUST stopped to take a short break, right before reaching issue 200, the beginning of the Mutant Massacre. My favorite youtuber and my favorite superhero team, a wonderful combination made in heaven.
I had been doing exactly the same and then started jumping around to get a real flavour for every single era. I'd actually never read Morrison's New X-Men before I started on this video and ended up absolutely loving it!
@@IFinishedAVideoGameI’ll try to read in chronological order as much as humanly possible. My goal was to reach age of apocalypse and then skip to new x-men by morrison but I think I’ll just continue until it becomes unbearable to continue. Watching OG Storm be part of the team alongside Dazzler and late 90s Rogue in one of these games was certainly a culture shock 😭 Btw love that you’re always able to respond to my comments, great to see you back.
Started with the Indiana Jones retrospective and found my way here. Your videos are absolute masterpieces and go into an insane amount of detail. I adore this art form and absolutely look forward to more from you! I really hope you find safety in recovery. Cancer is no joke, i lost my late grandfather to it. Any support i can muster goes straight to you my friend. Happy to be a newfound subscriber!
That's really awesome to hear. It's a strange little niche I appear to sit in so it's always nice when I get to see someone enjoying my videos! Thanks for the kind words about my situation - it's actually improved a lot in the last few weeks and hopefully I should now be in the clear!
It really is amazing isn't it. You wouldn't think that Pitch Black, which is as traditional of a horror as you can get, would produce such a great video game experience!
Dude I've been waiting so so much for this X Men vid! You are my favorite creator, absolutely and utterly unmatched! As always, can't wait for the next vid already
That's really awesome to hear. I'm actually really excited about the next video which is going to be very different to this one - just need to get my head right about my treatment first!
I mean that's only really true of my Parasite Eve and Indiana Jones videos and even then that's only really true of their views in 2023. Both hit a million long before that trend started (which I am holding onto so I don't lose my mind that nobody actually watches my videos haha)
I always watch through all of your retrospectives, even when I don't know the topic. But this is one I know a lot about, and undoubtedly I'm going to learn even more. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on some of my favourite comic book characters and the one X-Men game I really enjoyed (X-Men Legends). Thanks for continuing to produce such thorough videos in spite of your health. Hope you're doing well and stay strong!
I hope I do it justice! I was really conscious that I didn't want to mess up any major lore points so I did a TON of reading outside of it. I think I've read most of the Claremont run and nearly every major arc during the process of this video!
This is the best video game retrospective channel I know. It's not the most detailed - Aesir Aesthetics goes ridiculously in-depth - but it has the best mix of development history, industry context, gameplay details and story overview of all the channels I've encountered, all presented in a well-researched and extremely engaging way. Thank you for all the work you put in, IFinishedAVideoGame, and I wish you the best of luck with your ongoing health issues. May you continue putting out awesome retrospectives for years and years to come.
Thanks very much my friend. That's really nice to hear. Hopefully I'll have many more of these videos coming especially now that my cancer situation is looking so much more bright!
Not only is this a behemoth of a video but it's also wildly inspiring. I wanna become a youtuber, video game dev, comic artist and so much more. Thanks dude 🙏
Nothing is stopping you my dude! I started making these out of pure passion expecting nothing and now three years later I've got something I'm really proud of. Throw yourself into it and I'm sure you'll surprise yourself!
My favorite X-Men is Wolverine, because he’s great both on the team and on his own, plus the historical background of his character makes him extra unique.
You're a real legend and an inspiration my friend. We're all routing for you man. Thank you for all the amazing content youve given us already and continue to put out. Kick cancers ass and keep being an amazing individual and creator. Youre my favorite youtuber by a long shot and your videos have gotten me through some tough times and health trials of my own. So again thank you man! and sorry for rambling. Also if you and Steph ever need to unwind on the weekends my wife and i host Jackbox stream, we call it weekly therapy for our community and couples always have the best time. I wish you nothing but the best! You deserve the best.
I really appreciate that my friend. It's been such a rollercoaster year but not all that many highs! I'm really hoping that the next few months are a bit kinder to me and I can start to get things back on track!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame you just fucking keep fighting to spite it all. You look hardship in the face and say "Im going to overcome this" and you keep pushing. It's funny I was gonna quote stupid Alfredo from Batman.. "why do we fall, so we can learn to pick ourselves back up". But as I was typing it I thought the quote was from samwise in Lord of the Rings. :p. Point is don't give up on trying to get back to a place of happiness. You will get there. I know it. And I'm rarely wrong ;)
Ever since I discovered your channel it has become one of my favourites. Your commentary is entertaining and very informative it really shows that when you go in, you go deep into the matter at hand. Can't wait to spend another 6 hours watching another excellent video
I hope it lived up to my previous videos! I can confirm I went very deep with my research on this video - it was my comfort while recovering from all manner of surgeries!
Amazing to see you back, here's to a speedy and well deserved recovery! Also, you knew that any long-form analysis connoisseur would notice the Majuular cameo, right? ;)
10/10 video, thank you for your hard work on these videos they are all great and I can tell how much work you put into them, I hope your battle with cancer goes well and know you and your work are appreciated
Thanks so much my friend. I'm just pleased that it's finished and out there! I can have a little bit of time to decompress and try and catch up with life mentally!
Just wanted to say how much I love and appreciate your work! You've cultivated a unique voice and style that manages to stand out in the hypersaturated sea of video game content on UA-cam. Every time you post a new video is a treat for my senses, especially during long monotonous shifts at work. I wish you all the best with the ongoing treatment, much love from the pnw!
That's absolutely awesome to hear. It can be so easy to watch other people putting out genuinely groundbreaking videos and feel like you're not doing anything special. It's always nice to remember that there are people out there who really enjoy my stuff! It means a lot especially at the moment when I've got so much outside stuff competing for my attention!
A new IFAVG dropped and once again, all is right with the world for at least the next 6 hours. 🙏 On a more serious note, I’m so glad your treatment is going smoothly enough to keep going with these insanely well made and in depth videos. You’re a diamond in the UA-cam rough. Wishing you nothing but success and good health in the future. Take care.
Thanks so much my friend. It really has meant so much to know there are people out there that genuinely care about how I'm doing. UA-cam has been a real source of stress this year but never you guys - you've always been so good to me!
Oh my GOD this video was literally made for me, keep up the good work dude. The fact that you're able to put out such insanely high-quality content despite your situation is mind-blowing (Unrelated, but am I the only one who thinks the X-Men would be well-suited to a Fire Emblem-style tactical RPG??)
I've said it in a few comments already but really this video was a great way for me to focus on things happening outside of my treatment! Sitting in bed watching Star Trek is great for a couple of days but feeling like I had purpose was actually really great! Also - yes any X-Men RPG would be so welcome at this point! Hope you enjoyed the video!
After two weeks, I finally finished this video. I've got to say, it's one of your best. Your retrospectives always make me a fan of a new franchise. I deeply appreciate your dedication to good research and proper acknowledgement of the people who make these games. I'm wishing you the best of fortune on your cancer treatment. You're an absolute gem on this website and you deserve all of the support in the world. Cheers!
Thanks a lot I really appreciate it. It was a lot of work but I'm stoked that people are enjoying it. As for my cancer I've recently had some good news which I talk over in my last livestream - things are really looking on the up!
I can't disagree in the slightest. It's crazy how strong the comics are and how ripe with potential they are - and yet we have so few classic games to point to!
@IFinishedAVideoGame I absolutely need to give the comic a read, thank you for the recommendation! The game had such a unique vibe that really stuck with me in a way that many of its action platformer brethren didn't. I'd kill for some sort of Ghosts-N-Goblins HD Remaster of it, although that's about as likely as a Bloodborne PC port I did a little digging about the the game a few years ago, but there's very little I've been able to actually find out about the development process or sales figures, unfortunately
This is what UA-cam and the internet are for. Archival. i had forgotten about half of those games, and the other ones I wasn't aware of. It took me about two weeks to watch this, because I'd digest one, sometimes two game segments each night before I went to bed. Writing this as I finally finished watching (1:20am 10/30/2024). I thought Metroid and Castlevania were amazing, but this one really took the bar higher. Always enjoy you content and I appreciate the time you put into it. Hoping and praying for a swift and permanent recovery from cancer.
That's really awesome to hear. This was a really difficult video to make because of all the nonsense going on in my life at the time so it's always extremely nice to know people are enjoying it!
I haven't watched a full UA-cam video in three weeks. I saw this and here I am and here I shall remain. I'll probably rewatch Castlevania and Metroid while here. Your work inspires me to try and create so that one day some one may care as much as you to write of me.
I'm sorry to hear that my friend but I hope they all go smoothly. I just had my third CT of the year today and I've got to say I do not enjoy the process in the slightest so I feel you! Hope the rest of your day was much nicer!
Hey mate, I've been going through some health issues myself as of late and I stumbled upon your channel and have been binging your videos for days, they've really helped me out during a rough spot. I hope you recover soon, thank you for the amazing content!
Hey, I just wanted to drop a comment and let you know that this is the first video of yours I've seen, and it's an instant sub. I've always been a huge X-Men fan, and I've played a decent number, though not all, of the games you talked about here. I really appreciate how much effort you put into setting the stage to understand the conditions in which a game was developed and released. You have a clear love for the medium and respect for the people making games, and it comes through strongly. It's wild to me that it's been so long since the X-Men had a proper video game. I know Wolverine is on the way, but I really hope the rest of the team gets some love soon too. Gambit, Nightcrawler and Storm could all support their own games, and obviously we need more co-op team games. I really wish people would still make smaller Marvel games. Super heroes are so well suited to sidescrollers and beat-em-ups. They don't all need to be long AAA action adventures with realistic graphics. Man, it's wild how much damage Activision did to their games back then. The ones that were good achieved that in spite of, not because of, Activision. Bobby Kotick can lick a cactus. And finally, I'm really sorry about the diagnosis. Cancer is absolutely fucked. I know I'm an internet stranger, but I'm wishing you the best.
Thanks very much my friend. Thankfully since this video came out I've had some really great test results and I'm now in monitoring rather than treatment. It's still been a tough adjustment but I'm just happy to be on an upwards swing for once! Thanks for the sub as well! I hope you enjoy my other videos too!
I love how you always cover the lesser known games in-depth! Regardless of the games' quality it's so interesting to know the history behind them as well as hearing genuine critique about them. One of the many reasons I love this channel!
X-Men Arcade, X-Men Genesis, X-men 2 Clone Wars, X-Men MA, Adamantium Rage, X-Men COTA, XMvSF, X-Men Legends, X-Men Legends 2, Wolverine Origins, Deadpool.....just trying to tier list those alone is a pain. Can't wait for the new Wolverine game to drop. Good work sir. I feel like we kind of need an asterisk for X-men Cartoon Maker for Windows back in the mid 90's. Lowkey was a game, and def was pretty popular.
I feel like Wolverine always just seems to be surrounded by such lame negativity at the moment but I think there is every reason to think we might be getting something great! I'll be holding on until we get something concrete!
Cancer is one of the most difficult things on earth to handle both physically and emotionally, so I was worried that you were forcing yourself to make videos at the expense of your own well-being, but seeing the love and passion you put into these videos reminds me and everyone else that this is your passion and not even cancer is going to stop you from doing what you love. Stay strong. I'll be here for the next one and the one after.
That's really nice to hear. This video has been a lot of effort and frankly, I'm pleased that it's finished and I can move onto something a bit more straightforward! Luckily the next few months look at bit easier so I can hopefully get out another video before the end of the year!
X-Men has been a part of my life for so long and something I hold so dear to me. That's most likely to do with my Father and Uncle being big comic book nerds, (making me become one). Let me tell you that this was worth the wait and that we ask nothing more of you. I pray that you will get better. God speed my friend.
Thanks to awesome dad and uncle! I had to discover comics by myself and I would have killed for someone introducing them to me! Thanks for the kind words as well - it really means a lot
Dude, I just found out that you're recovering from cancer, and I'm sure you're sick *pun intended* of hearing about it, I just want you to know that you are one of the top video game channels on UA-cam. Only GGman Lives and AVGN are up there with you. Although, they are not fighting cancer, and God forbid that they ever do. I'm not just saying that because you're sick. You make high-quality and detailed videos and I love your demeanor. I'm praying for your recovery my guy, and I hope you never stop making these SS-tier videos. You deserve so many more subscribers.
X-Men cartoon was my childhood, and yet I don't think I played a single video game with them. Deadpool looks full of fun well executed metahumor, shame it's not available anymore.
Ahem, excuse me, what I meant to say was I've been waiting for TripleJump to do this for years, but now I don't have to wait, because a way better UA-camr did it so, thusly and therefore, . . . YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
I hope you get better soon. this is my favorite channel when it comes to game retrospective. You are a masterclass. Been having a rough time myself so you definitely made my sunday better.
That's really nice to hear. It's awesome to know that my funny little videos can help someone feel even a little bit better. I hope things turn around for you soon my friend
Back when creative and talented devs were NOT replaced by accountants and execs. Now real gamers replaced by quick-insta-fame-fake-gurus. People who, back in the day, called us 'losers' cuz we were gamers or loved Anime. Now they use our tech to make sick money, share their vanity and destroy self-esteem of others. I made a deep dive video of X360 as the last great generation, hope I'm wrong... Origins Wolverine is actually a very decent game; too bad the movie isn't.
1:20:00 Fun fact, at the end of the Mojo Crunch level, when time is almost out, the screen will turn red. And if you are at the end of the level when this happens, a message will appear at the top of the screen: "Restart your computer now". Thankfully my brother was watching and after quickly talking out what the message could mean, we theorised that it might mean to reset the console. Although we were unsure, considering that we were struggling with this level for weeks, I took a leap of faith and literally leaped to the console to reset it. Man, when those 1's and 0's appeared, I swear I forgot to breathe wondering what I've just done. The fact that is worked made it by far my favorite, most memorable video game experience in my entire life TO THIS DAY. I know a lot of people hated it, but I LOVED this little mechanic. Truly ahead of its time.
Damn that's extremely cool to hear! I can't imagine too many people would take the risk considering how tough it is to reach that level! You're a brave man but it was well rewarded!
I've not actually seen the new one yet. I more meant that the character has two oscar winning performances associated with it. Something you could have never imagined back in the 80s or 90s!
Your Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings videos are two of my all time most favourite videos on the internet. I absolutely love your work, I hope this video hits 10 million views so you can make more video like this.
God that would certainly be nice considering the year I've had - at this point I'll settle for 500k and knowing that I'll be able to do this in another six months time!
1:50:12 HEAVILY disagreed. The X-Men DO fit the mold of overcoming impossible odds. In fact I would argue that they were BUILT off of it. They are all about using their extraordinary gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them BECAUSE those gifts. What's more they consistently do so by facing opponents that they seemingly have no hope against. if that ain't overcoming insurmountable adversity... IDK what is. ALL their best stories feature this element. So for you to say their game being extremely difficult runs counter to their themes & what they are about come off as completely disingenuous. IMO
I think the phrase "completely disingenuous" is ludicrously over the top here. We have a difference of opinion. I'm not trying to deceive anyone? Also I would say that while yes that does happen in some stories - in the vast majority of their adventures the X-Men have access to Xavier and cerebro, the Phoenix force, time travel, a near immortal Wolverine, a virtually unstoppable Storm and that's without including stories where Magneto lends his powers. Yes there are foes like Onslaught, Apocalypse and Cassandra that push them to their limits but the overwhelming majority of battles are solved within a single issue! The point I am making is that overcoming massive adversity is not such a defining factor of the X-Men that their games should reflect that in insane levels of difficulty. There is a power fantasy element that is missing from a lot of the earlier games. So yeah - to call me disingenuous when the point has clearly had thought put into it is just obnoxious. Disagree without being rude
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I used “disingenuous” because your argument seemed a bit ad hominem, rooted in the assumption that extreme difficulty is bad, and conclusion working backwards from that assumption in order to rationalize it. I'm not saying that your dislike for the difficulty is wrong... or that it isn't even too much. I'm just saying that its a poor argument, that runs counter to the series themes. Point being one could just as easily argue the opposite, as i did, to illustrate said point.
I'm very clear in the video that extreme difficulty can be really great and even give specific examples! My point is about its effect on the atmosphere of these games and how well it suits what I perceive to be the core fantasy of playing as the X-Men. I really don't see how that's disingenuous even if you disagree with me! That word implies that I know it's not true but I'm saying it anyway and that's just not correct.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Mechanically speaking your analysis was spot on. I have no problems with it. It's the lore angle I have a problem with. Saying that difficulty breaking the lore is disingenuous because it's worked backwards from your distaste for the game's difficulty, rather than the than the lore itself. You're using your interpretation of what X-Men is about to justify why you think their games shouldn't be extremely difficult. As I already stated THAT is disingenuous, as it is an argument not rooted in the lore itself, and it can just as easily be argued the other way around.
Just got my recap for the year and I finished in the top 0.3% of your fans and I watched 18 times more of your content than the average viewer. I don't know if that says good things about you or bad things about me but either way I am still here and will keep watching!
That's really cool to hear! I genuinely really appreciate it! Hopefully I should have some more videos coming at a bit of a faster pace now that I'm out of my cancer situation and on the mend!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame that makes me happy to hear! Also, you responding is awesome. i love how you blend storytelling into the already established story! i will be a fan as long as I find youtube to be of interest to me!

Thanks to everyone who's commented so far and sent such awesome messages of support. It's been a very tough year but today feels like it could be a real turning point. - Makes a 6-hour video
I salute you, mate. Hope you recover soon. F**k cancer.
Thanks my friend. When I started making this it was only meant to be a shorter video but it became a real happy place away from all the surgery complications. I think that's likely why it ended up sprawling so big!
Don't forget to be awesome. Frell cancer.
There is healing music on UA-cam that will help cancer it’s helpful ❤
I watch it inbetween over several days, too. I would hear it as a podcast xD
@@IFinishedAVideoGame brother I hope your okay my heart goes out to you man. You’ve got this
This is why I watch your channel: Context.
I was thinking the same thing while watching this.
I love listening to the snippets of "what happened to X company" before and after the game
They just provide such good context alongside the games story and development.
I think at this point, you should really rename this channel to be "I Finished a Franchise."
awls
Will he do Warhammer? That would be a true undertaking.
I'm sort of blessed/cursed in that I've found my niche but it requires my entire soul and body to produce any sort of new video lmao
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Honestly, considering everything you're going through, it's pretty damn inspirational, and it's a hellova niche. Wishing you all the best, health-wise.
Truly. lol
I already know my sleep routine is about to be a whole lot better when I see another IFAVG retrospective drops
I had no idea I would develop into such a sleep guru!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame in all seriousness though, your writing is so engaging that it really does help me get out of my own head in the evenings. It really comes across just how much time and passion you sink into your scripts
This has to be your most ambitious subject yet, the X-Men were EVERYWHERE in the 90’s and I’m sure that ubiquity came with a lot of video games lol
@@IFinishedAVideoGame has a similar experience the last two months, but with surgery. Could barely sit or stand until this last couple weeks
You make boogie somehow look worse 😂
Man, I love your videos. I watched the vagrant story, castlevania and metroid videos at least four times or more from start to end. I wish you the best.
That's really awesome to hear! Hopefully this video joins that pantheon!
Time to X-Man
We've raised our Son well.
Hope you enjoy it my dude! I'm sure it's a nice little tonic to all the darkness in Silent Hill!
Oh hey, it's this guy. I love your vid on the Legacy of Kain series!
@jonq5380 LOK is one of the best retrospective, IMO
I vividly remember playing it during an elementary school trip to a rollar rink and spending the entire time in their tiny arcade section.
I've only come across one in my life and I'm not entirely sure that it was an original. I'm highly jealous as it's the defacto way to play the game!
They had one at my local mini golf place. It almost always had a line of kids waiting for any open spot.
When you say "Complete History", you're not kidding.
I feel like there is a bit of a growing trend on UA-cam of people advertising "complete" or "ultimate" retrospectives that basically hardly go into the actual substance of the franchise! I really want to make sure that people know they're getting their money's worth with my videos!
I’m so excited to learn about something that I knew nothing about in great detail.
I exist to fulfill this need! Hope it was a good watch!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame well I'm proud of you friend
I don't think I've ever been this excited for a youtube video.
I hope it lived up to the hype!
You are an excelent writer. Your intros are all just fantastic. I don't even care about X-Men and I just binge a 6 hour video about their videogames.
Watching OG Storm be part of the team alongside Dazzler and late 90s Rogue in one of these games was certainly a culture shock 😭
Btw love that you’re always able to respond to my comments, great to see you back.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame That is wonderful to hear!! I can’t wait to see what you have in store!
Escape from Butcher bay was one of the most unexpected games for me and probably one of the best movie tie -ins I have ever played.
It really is amazing isn't it. You wouldn't think that Pitch Black, which is as traditional of a horror as you can get, would produce such a great video game experience!
hope you get well soon bro, love watching you videos. always so much attention to details, LOVE IT.
Thanks my friend. It really means a lot to hear
"What looks like the Xmen beating up Nightcrawler." I laughed hard when I saw the image.
Honestly what were they thinking! I'm sure they're meant to be celebrating but it looks so strange!
Two things I love, long retrospective videos and X-Men
Luckily you're in the right place my dude!
This has to be probably the most interesting retrospective since superheroes have such a variety of how you can tackle them.
That's why it was so much fun to put together. The variety is just crazy!
It is so impressive and amazing how these videos are made and edited despite most people watching them at night / to bed.
You are the king of retrospectives. Love your channel, positive vibes going your way for a speedy recovery.
Thanks my friend that really means a lot to hear!
Not only is this a behemoth of a video but it's also wildly inspiring. I wanna become a youtuber, video game dev, comic artist and so much more. Thanks dude 🙏

On a more serious note, I’m so glad your treatment is going smoothly enough to keep going with these insanely well made and in depth videos.

I am indeed a comedy genius
Oh my GOD this video was literally made for me, keep up the good work dude. The fact that you're able to put out such insanely high-quality content despite your situation is mind-blowing
(Unrelated, but am I the only one who thinks the X-Men would be well-suited to a Fire Emblem-style tactical RPG??)
A six hour video? Hell yeah, give me two please, I don't have anything to drink with.
So excited to see you make a video on the XMen! This franchise deserves so much more than it's gotten.
I can't disagree in the slightest. It's crazy how strong the comics are and how ripe with potential they are - and yet we have so few classic games to point to!
Very good video, clearly a lot of work went into it and you deserve the recognition for that!
I've subbed from this vid alone
That's awesome to hear. Hopefully you enjoy my other videos too!
Holy shit, a reference to Chakan: The Forever man?
Honestly, I thought I'd dreamed that game up, given how few people ever remember it existing
What's even stranger is that it was actually a semi-popular comic first! It's somehow completely been lost to time!
@IFinishedAVideoGame I absolutely need to give the comic a read, thank you for the recommendation!
The game had such a unique vibe that really stuck with me in a way that many of its action platformer brethren didn't. I'd kill for some sort of Ghosts-N-Goblins HD Remaster of it, although that's about as likely as a Bloodborne PC port
I did a little digging about the the game a few years ago, but there's very little I've been able to actually find out about the development process or sales figures, unfortunately
Welcome back man! I hope your recovery has been going well🙏
Criminally underrated channel, and you deserve all of the health and wealth. Looking forward to all your future videos!
Thanks so much. A bit of health and wealth wouldn't go a miss after the year I've had - hence the sponsor!
X-Men aren't really my thing but I'm commenting for the algorithm because you deserve it 👏
Thanks my friend
I haven't watched a full UA-cam video in three weeks. I saw this and here I am and here I shall remain. I'll probably rewatch Castlevania and Metroid while here. Your work inspires me to try and create so that one day some one may care as much as you to write of me.
All I can say to that is - go for it my friend! Passion fuels creation and when you're loving what you're doing people can really feel it!
Yay! I have a bunch of uncomfortable scans/tests tomorrow & this will be my self-care afterwards! Thanks in advance!
Holy cow, I'm gonna be busy watching this. Might take me a week to get through lol! Amazing work as always you mad lad!
Hopefully it makes for a good watch! It really spiraled into something monstrous that I hope is still enjoyable!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I'm watching it right now bro. Soooooo good!
@IFinishedAVideoGame glad to hear there's some positive momentum.
So far I've started in on your Castelvania video, and not disappointed yet!
One hour into it already I didn't notice the time go. It's simple and soothing❤🎉🎉
That's really cool to hear. I always try to go quite low key with the videos so it's nice to know it's appreciated
I love how you always cover the lesser known games in-depth! Regardless of the games' quality it's so interesting to know the history behind them as well as hearing genuine critique about them. One of the many reasons I love this channel!
Thanks my friend! That's something I really pride myself on! You'll know that I'm in dire straights when I released an Elder Scrolls video!

What’s in the Hulk’s inventory? Rage.
Bro this is such an undertaking I commend you
Thanks my friend. It was a huge effort (especially the editing in the last few days) but it's been nice to have a project to focus on!
"lets see if we survive the experience, btw i have cancer" is just,,,,,,,, a choice to start the video with. much love
LOL yeah I didn't really think about that section flowing into one another when I wrote the script!
X-Men cartoon was my childhood, and yet I don't think I played a single video game with them. Deadpool looks full of fun well executed metahumor, shame it's not available anymore.
It is a real shame as the game is a huge amount of fun. You don't often hear about "funny games" but damn Deadpool is absolutely up there!
Good lord, 6 hours. Hell yea.
Turn up the playback speed
@@Globalastral5 why would I do that?
Hope you enjoy it!
It actually impacts our watch time when people do that so I'd highly recommend watching channels you like on regular speed!
As someone who’s been working on a long ass video that’s messed you my whole year I admire your dedication and thorough approach.
Thanks my friend. It is always a huge amount of work and this one was especially!
It’s crazy how every single one of your videos is about something I’m interested in, god I love your channel
and I know it was just a small mention, but I really liked hearing a shout out to the ending of the Krakoan Age in the comics
I'm in your mind hunting for ideas!
Hey welcome back! I hope you're feeling better. Thanks for coming back :)
Thanks for having me back my friend!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
Ahem, excuse me, what I meant to say was I've been waiting for TripleJump to do this for years, but now I don't have to wait, because a way better UA-camr did it so, thusly and therefore,

@@IFinishedAVideoGame The same for you my friend. Joined your patreon. its the least i can do.
Origins Wolverine is actually a very decent game; too bad the movie isn't.
cool xbox tribute you did but PS4 is my greatest gen
Is this a parody
This guy like the new Joker movie! GET HIM!
He’s probably talking about how both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Oscar’s for their performances rather than both of Phoenix’s
This guy appeared as my favourite creator and idk who he is 😂 probably watched some vids in my sleep
Thanks my friend!
Glad to see you back, hoping for a speedy recovery and thankful for a video on my childhood.
Thanks my friend. Thankfully I've got a few months off so I'm going to recover and hopefully start on the next video!
I can’t become a patron right now but I hope this helps a little. I love these videos and appreciate the work that goes into them. Thank you!
Thanks my friend. That really does make a difference and it's very much appreciated!
Wishing you the best of luck in your fight against cancer. Thank you for continuing to put out quality content despite your struggle.
Thank so much my friend. It really does mean a lot
I'm just stopping by to say thank you, I feel a lot of anxiety at night and your voice helps me relax, I know you are going through a difficult time, but you are strong and you will overcome it. I send you a big hug.
