It isn’t about exclusivity, it’s about quality. Their finishing is nothing to write home about, and they use generic ETA movements in 90% of their lineup. The issue is that the watches retail for 5-10x what they really should.
ETA has been supplying some of the top names in the industry for decades. I don’t see the issue with an ETA movement versus in-house when an ETA movement has been proven to be a workhorse and is easily serviceable. The craftsmanship of the dial, bracelet, bezel can all be prioritized then. However, Hublot doesn’t seem to deliver value in that end

They get a bad rap for selling a $1,000 watch for $10,000 - that's it. If they did something with their movements and created a master/cos-c certified decorated piece (like others do for $2,000) maybe their branding would handle this price but as it is, nope, it's a sow's ear sold as a silk purse.

I respectfully disagree. Rolex is very much jewellery also. Although i do agree about the movements. Obviously Rolex movements are in house nowadays. Although many brands just modify ETA or Selitta movements. Finally we have seen an influx of "old money" moving away from Rolex towards brands such as Hublot.
They are so reliable because they use a generic ETA movement. They are also cheap to repair since the watch making schools teach people with these movements. Thats the problem, nothing special about them. They look great but they cost to much for what you are getting. Plenty of way better deals with brands like grand seiko, I hate to be the GS meat rider (although I am one) but if I had to choose im going with a GS every day of the week
no, this issue is that they put standard ETA movements worth 150-300 dollars in watches that cost over 7000 dollars. for that price you should have nice decorated inhouse movements.
A big part of Hublot’s issues is the fact that they have several watches that appear to rip of other watches designs but also the fact they almost always use cheap 3rd party “off the shelf” movements while charging a price consistent with something build in-house

i had a hublot once and it was the biggest mistake… had to service it after 3 months bcs the time was already going forward several min a day had to wait for like 6 months, bring it back, scratch on the glass, new face (cheaper face to be exact)! bringing it back again, waited another 3-4 months… for my trouble, i got a wood tablet from them… never again
I agree with the buy what you like, but at the same time: If you like Hublot know that paying full retail price should not be done and no one except European new money football players that never finished high school will respect your choice.

Using standard movements and charging charging a premium, lack of horological pedigree, Panerai might have put out limited editions, but Panerai has horological Pedigree being founded in the 1800’s and the watches created for the Italian army. The only watches Hublot ever put out to work, were the two that Maradona wore at the same time while he was coach of the Argentina National team.
Yet you never see either of these two wearing a Hublot. They're defending them because they still have some in stock that they picked up for pennies on the dollar.
My father bought Classic Fusion like in 2015, it was black ceramic, he gave it to me later and I just went to swim with it in a pool, shit leaked, never would have happened with an oyster date just Rolex that he also owned. Hublot is just just a nice package, while Rolex has soul to it.
The issue is that they basically repackage cheap movements into slightly more expensive cases and then upsell at an ungodly price. They are like those fake luxury brands that just have T-shirts or other clothing items printed in China but because it has a logo on it all the sudden it's worth hundreds of dollars. Except this is significantly more expensive, if you're going to pay this much for a watch it's not just about it looking good or it being a status symbol it's also about appreciating the mechanics inside the watch. Watches are essentially an engineering work of art that you wear on your wrist, and having something where the entire engineering of that being the movement being some cheap 150 to $250 movement is genuinely quite disappointing
