What I remember back then was that the original D3s got popular in Southern California (specifically San Diego) after Osiris started liquidating their stock for sale. When they were at regular retail prices, nobody had them. Then they suddenly became ubiquitous in low-income communities, because they gave them away for near-free at skate and surf shops. And then everybody had/wanted them. The customary thing to do was once they were worn and battered, was to cut the tongue off your old pair, so that you could slide them behind the tongue of your next D3s to make them look even puffier.

Dope shoes, I had like 5 pairs over the course of the years. Super comfy, like couches on your feet. Never had any issue skating in them, but I also never liked the more simple "vans" style, which gave great board feel, but also sent Shockwave through my feet anytime hitting a drop or stairset over 4 or 5 steps.

Classic Vans suck for street skating. And their wet traction is down right dangerous. Nobody in the 90s skated in Vans. I can't recall seeing one person in the DC area, especially any pros (e.g. Freedom Plaza) skating in Vans. Vans were not very popular in the 80s/90s and didn't seem to start getting popular again until 2000s. With Vans Skateparks popping up, and all the contests they put on, they certainly gained back a little market share, especially after they were purchased by another large company in 2004.
My favorite most comfy skate shoes ever were made by NICE (~1996?) that were like a Taupe colored suede. They kind of looked basic, almost cheap on the outside, but they held up for 2-3x longer than any other shoe I ever had skating. From Vision Street Wear suedes (nearly identical construction to Vans Full Cabs), bulky Airwalk hightops, to Etnies, eS, Emerica, DC, and others.
I didn't really like when they started all looking like super bulky Basketball shoes. I know Dyrdek had some influence on that as he had dozens of shoe designs he created with DC.

    • @natorious314
      @natorious314 2 роки тому +3

@@hazepheno925 DC were the "poser" shoe in my town growing up. With their atrocious build quality no one who actually skated wore them. People either had the cheapest models they put out cause they were broke (no shade, I was broke too) or their $130 "fashion" oriented shoes that were trying to compete with the Circa, Osiris and Supra flashy hightops. No idea if DC finally upped their build quality but I'll certainly never skate them. Not even my love of Dyrdek growing up could keep me buying them after I shredded two pairs in two weeks.

It seems silly now, but as a skater, the D3's were seen as the poser shoes that non-skaters wore for fashion. Never owned a pair for that reason. I mean, in reality they were more casual or fashion shoes, over what a person should want in a responsive skate shoe. In that sense, you have nothing to feel off about. Plenty of non skaters did wear them and other puffy skate shoes.
However, I've always laughed at how ridiculous skateboarding is as a culture. So elitist for something that is supposed to be a counter culture. Don't hold the board this way, Don't wear this band's T-shirt, he's pushing mongo, ect. My absolute favorite is how nitpicky people will get on a game of SKATE "But I said only flat ground fakie flip tricks"! That argument really never happens in other sports. Still a fun sport, but just can't get over some of the culture stuff.

The 2001 model (this one) looks so incredibly different from the OG ('99) that has tons of mesh on it and a ring for the laces in the centre of the tongue. Had both versions at one point, still think the OG is a nicer shoe, and puffier overall (which let's be honest was the reason we all wanted them lol). 2001 revision is real nice feeling on the feet though and is much more comfortable than the original release imo.

I fell in love with the D3 1st time I saw them, I tried to get them in every colorway, I got most. Sk8'n them kinda sucked though. Couldn't feel the board and I found out the hard way, you can't fly a plane in them either. I was learning to fly in a Cessna 172 and the shoes were way too wide for the pedals, I had to take them off and fly in my socks that day. I wore my D3's more casually. I sk8 best in Etnies Callicut and Adidas Superstar.

What made these so popular was the fact they were made of tough rubber compared to your standard vans and Etnies that would wear out after weeks of skating. These shoes where the holy grail on the inside skating circle when they dropped. Nobody had to replace they’re old vans after they came out with these. Forever a change in the skate scene for the shoes we wore. I got a pair of these from my older cousin as some hand me downs. Wish I still had them.

I had the grey and yellow 2001’s in 2001 and they were insanely comfortable. I used to hit my ankle a lot skating if I missed a flip trick and these remedied that. For me that was worth the money (that my parents paid) just to not limp around campus. Also, I made the choice to wear these for the year vs getting 5 pairs of Vans. Still worth it in my mind and it’s cool to see how the center cut looks. Thanks for this! Checking online they’re around $100 these days. In 2001 the Osiris shoes were great for stairs and drops for me. They absorbed a lot of impact compared to the vans, emerica and globe shoes I wore for more tech tricks.
The Josh Kaspers were one of my favorites.
I remember a lot of “Posers” wore them, that never even stepped foot on a skateboard. I still find it weird at an older age when I talk to someone that wears skate or surf brands but don’t do either.

"Athlete designed our latest product for his exacting requirements" ...No he didn't, a designer did, someone who can operate measuring tools, run design programs, knows how to make a pattern or blueprints. Nowadays it's often not even somebody with the brand, but just a guy who works for the factory in Asia. Having worked for several footwear, clothing, and gear brands, I've seen it up close;-)

    Please do the etnies marana.
The backstory is, they have a three times more durable formula that they just released however, in doing that, they got rid of their old formula and I am under the belief that nothing actually changed.
They always offered the 3X durable in a Ryan Sheckler pro model, so a year ago, I bought that as well as their classic marinas and they seem to hold up equivalently
After I made that realization they stopped selling their classics and said all of their shoes are now three times more durable
Please get to the bottom of this🤩

You NEED to do Nike Shox of some type. In middle school, your coolness was directly related to weather or not you had Shox and/or Gogurt when I was growing up.

I skates these in the early 2000’s. Zero board feel but, we were not worried about that. In those days we just hucked down stuff and hoped to land on the board! So, the more times you could jump down some huge set or drop or gap or whatever it was without destroying your feet the better!!
For the old heads out there, Emerica and Es are doing reissues of the muskas and the mark johnsons sooo sick!!!

I believe I had a pair of D3s in 2001, but it might have been another Osiris skate shoe. At the time, people thought there was some major performance benefit to wearing big chunky skate shoes. In retrospect, that seems a bit silly but the padding in the tongue and collar was helpful in reducing impact if a flip trick goes wrong. For a second, I thought this was going to be about the Muska shoe that had the stash pocket. Now that I've looked it up, that shoe was made by és tho.

Dave Maybe a ended up with the original D3 because he showed up late to a meeting and all brother pros on Osiris had already chosen their shoes from the pre-designed batch.

I had a pair of white ones second hand from my skater friend. They worked well bmxing. Very obnoxiously puffy but we didn't notice back then.

  • @victoralley708

I had these in blue on white. Wish I knew what happened to them.
Edit: at the end of the video you asked what people who had them thought, and how they held up. I didn't skate in mine because I had a job and bought them with my own money and I didn't want to destroy shoes that I paid that much for. I didn't wear mine a whole lot because after I had them for about a week I started to dislike how bulky they were and I much preferred my etnies. But I did wear them here and there for probably about 3 years. I kept them clean and only wore them to school or to go out on the weekends if I wasn't working. And I have to say, they felt extremely durable for the time. They never really broke in. And they were so absurdly puffy and bulky that they were practically impossible to crease. The air pockets held up, none of them busted, but I'm sure they would have if I skated in them.

there's no way that shoe was more "controversial" than the Muska shoe with the weed stash pocket built-in. Parents and cops and republicans were up in arms. Also, I had the D3 and the Muska's back in the day. The D3 was not breathable at all and the shoes started to smell bad. PS cut apart the Muska's if you haven't already.

Hey, I have made a comment in the past about if you could cut a good motocross boot in haft and it got like 500 likes. I think I wasn't the only one wishing for it. Again, they are the stiffest and most protecting boot I know and they contain a lot of cool tech. Something like a high end Alpinestar, a Sidi, a Gaerne (my favorite) or a Forma would be really interesting.
