Some old-timers at the range were shooting pistols at targets at 300 yards with stock handguns, their EDC guns. One was a M&P Shield, and the other was I think some CZ, not the CZ-75, but a more compact one. VERY slow fire, and basically aiming at the sky, but what got me was they were actually hitting the targets (about 18" diameter steel).
Naturally I had to ask them about what they were doing. They said they had seen the video of the Las Vegas shooting, and it occurred to them, "What if we were being shot at from distance, and had only our EDC guns?" Where I live, it's super open and hilly (think Garand Thumb's recent videos in Idaho, because he's only a few hours from where I am, and it looks like that here, too), so that's a possible scenario out here.
So for the fun of it, I joined in. I started at 100 yards, and after a mag or two (my gun has 13 round mags), I was getting adequately consistent hits at 100 yards (I'm running a particularly heavy gun, an Astra A-100 in .40S&W, shooting 180gn bullets out there). So I shot at 200 yards. After 5 mags, I managed a hit on the 200 yard plate (14" diameter). I think the bullet skipped of the ground, though.
After that, in addition to my regular 7 yard, 15 yard, and 30 yard training sessions, I've been adding 50 yard, 75 yard, and 100 yard to my routine. I think a handgun past 100 yards is pretty hopeful thinking in lethality, BUT, even a wounding hit at that range would be psychological intimidation to whomever is shooting at you, because they will quickly realize you're the better shot, or at least good enough that they need to find cover, and perhaps disengage.
Even if you never use that skill in a real firefight, it is challenging - and very fun, so why not get good at it? You might even win a bet or two with your buddies who don't think you can make the shot. Ain't anything dumb about learning a new shooting skill. 🙂

180 grain slow moving bullet (cca 1000 fps) dont lose velocity that fast. They did test with 9x19 147 grain once. At 135 yards it still had same energy as 380 ACP at muzzle. So your 40 s&w 180 grain is lethal way past 150 yard.

Paul, LOOKING GOOD, KEEP UP THE PROGRESS ! You'll beat this beast. you should start rick simpson oil asap. my buddy healed over 50 people, hit me up. even stage 3 lung cancer & he cured him, enclosed links. also NO SUGAR!!!!! C lives on sugar. solzhenitsn wrote a story where a man asked for traditional cure, go into bush, starve yourself, & drink chaga tea non sto-p 6 months, reagan visited him when he had stomach cancer, also ivermectin for sure & i'd try fendabelozone? If you cant stomach the r Simpson oil put in food, if too sick, use as suppository(gel cap), it can work very far along. Godspeed Brother, you can do this , start using these above weapons now, keep praying & we're all praying w you ! You're a great patriot & great American, Godspeed Brother!!! ua-cam.com/video/BlmuuvTM5Ho/v-deo.html @@zenshines2005_

12:51 this scene is iconic. A man puts his crutch aside, sits in the rain, talks about bullets. This single scene should be made into a poster. I’d put it on my wall.

Paul, I once emailed you about a question I had. Even with 800k followers you got back to me in less than 24 hours. I've learned more from your presentations than I can say. I think I'll always regret not driving to see you at the gun show last year. Thank you for everything.

As an aircraft mechanic, I sympathize with Paul's frustration over the That'll Never Happen Battalion. For instance I was told many times, _"there's no point in having life vests and floating seat cushions because a jet aircraft would inevitably break up upon hitting the water and no one would be around to need them."_ Then Sully did his thing on the Hudson and suddenly that criticism was put to bed.
Still, other silly ideas persist such such as, _"the crash position won't help you because everyone's gonna be reduced to paste on impact."_
I think what happens is people get the one most dramatic image of the event in their heads and never consider any other way it might happen. Sure, if the plane augers in at 400mph, the crash position is useless. However if the plane simply overshoots the runway and runs across the grass at 80mph, that can be a violent but eminently survivable incident, IF you take one simple precaution to make sure you don't end up with massive head trauma or a shredded spine, which is precisely what the crash position is designed to minimize.
So too with self-defense shootings, there are tons of ways it can go down. Some of them might take you beyond any reasonable training, but many of them could easily give you opportunities to come out ahead IF you have the forethought to take advantage of them.

That type of thinking was rampant in height of GWOT. I had instructors and very knowledgeable people tell me things like, " The bandoliers, stripper clips, and speed loaders the ammunition comes with are useless. You'll never have to load magazines while taking fire." Or, "fighting holes and defensive lines will never be used again." That stuff was true for most guys doing counter-insurgency, sure. But we're seeing that it's wrong in lot of places right this moment. I think we did a lot of people a disservice by placing so much emphasis on special operations and over-learning the lessons of GWOT. I had lot of friends in that field, and they are some of the best in the business, but there was a culture problem in that people treated them as if they had a monopoly on knowledge and proficiency of skill, which lead to a lot of other guys not getting as much experience as they could have. And they are now in charge and have to relearn a bunch of stuff.

I got the same when I was in the service.
In the Gulf War I was a gunner on an M60A1 main battle tank. After we got back stateside we retrained on the M1A1. The M1 is completely different to the old M60, so much so that they changed the names of various components for no apparent reason other than to change stuff. For example, track pads are now called track shoes, the cupola is now the Commanders Powered Weapons Station, the gunner's cadillacs are now the Gunner's Power Control Handles, etc. ad nausium.
Anyhow, they assigned one instructor per tank crew. As he is taking us around this new tank and showing us this gizmo and that thingamajig, I was coming up with questions. If this happens, what do I do? Is there a work around if that breaks? How do I do X with Y? Instead of saying, "Good question. I'll find out.", his answers were either "That would never happen." or "That's not important." Eventually they transitioned to "Shut the f*** up."
But he was a sergeant and I was only a corporal.
I very rarely like to "toot my own horn" but by then I may have been only a corporal but my fruit salad was already three or four rows high and included two Sea Service Deployment, three Southwest Asia Service Medals, a Kuwait Liberation Medal, a Meritorious Unit Citation, a Naval Unit Citation, and a Combat Action ribbon.
I'd personally shot over $200,000 worth of ammo and had been shot at by everything from rifle fire to mortars to artillery (not always from enemy tubes), to tanks. I've been stuck in minefields, had to repair track in the middle of burning oil fields, and had so much TOW missile wire draped across my tank that you had to cut your way out of the hatch. I've shot engagements where you could only just barely identify targets and only knew that they were the enemy because they were in front of you.
I was a second generation Marine Tanker, my father having served in the same battalion in Vietnam in '65.
So when I asked a question I wasn't just pulling wild ideas out of my ass.
At the end of the four week retraining, we were given a form to fill out to give our input into what we thought of the training, the only time in six years the Corps ever asked what I thought. So I told them. In as much detail as I could. We could turn in these forms anonymously. I printed and signed with my name, rank, unit, and every bit of contact info I could think of. I wanted whomever was reading these to know exactly who I was and exactly who I was complaining about and exactly why.
I never heard back from that.

You leave a mark on all of us, and in a way there is now a little Paul Harrel in everyone.
If possible, drop by occasionally, make a comment or tell a story, we would all be immensely grateful.
    Only if possible of course.
