I camped a number of times in Fish Creek/Split Mountain back in the seventies. It is spectacular. Back then, there were no campgrounds, no kiosks, no signs, no others. It was magic. Thank you for the images.
You took me back nearly 50 years to when my father and I took our Toyota Landcruiser (the real thing, not these namby-pamby SUVs) through Split Peak. We camped somewhere on the far side. I noticed a hilltop near our campground that appeared to have a ring around it. I went exploring in the best early teen traditions and found that there was indeed a ring of stones around the top of the mountain and above that ring soil had been cleared of (dark rocks maybe?) at the pinnacle was a fire pit that hadn't been used at all recently. There was none of the rusting junk often found where people used to camp 70-80 years ago. There were just some potsherds scattered about. I wish I remembered more details--like where exactly it was. My dad and I spent an awesome long weekend in Anza Borrego. Thank-you for bringing it alive for me.
@BackRoadsWest1 Before Elephant knees there is a right turn up a wash. In 2000, We drove up and camped. We took a short hike up the side and discovered a plethora of petrified wood rocks there. There used to be a forest there!
Funny you should post this video today about the Anza Borrego State Park area. At 3:07pm (PDT) today by Ocotillo Wells, there was a magnitude 4.5 earthquake (just after you posted this video).
Today, I made it to the wash, went up for a bit and then chickened out, I have a 2018 Ford Ecosport 4wd and was not sure if i could make it, what are your thoughts? I want to photograph so bad!
Great videos! Is Anza open for day tripping? Kids and I are stir crazy and want to get out on the trails. So much contradictory info about what is exactly open these days!
There are many places that are open, some of the dirt roads are opening up. No camping tho. There are so many places to go see, the chances of the virus in a 100 degree desert are nil. Enjoy a great day ride. Also look up the history of the pioneers who came thru here. The kids will love it.
I just found your channel and have spent way too much time watching your videos. They are so well done and informative. I have a question. What camera or cameras do you use for your videos and still shots? Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for your comment. We use Canon Rebel cameras (3 different ones) most of the time (including video on this particular video), Nikon Coolpix (old pictures) and a GoPro Hero 6 on a gimbal or drone on newer videos.
