Water Heater Pilot Light Keeps Going Out Honeywell Valve

  • WARNING:
DO NOT SET VALVE TO A, B, C, or VERY HOT!
Honeywell Valve has detected a“water too hot” event, the gas valve will never work again - unless you know how to reset "it", the HONEYWELL FRANKENVALVE! Here is the simple fix. I opened the cover again, left everything plugged in, took a piece of speaker wire with the plastic off of the ends, and held the wire ends to the top left pin and the top-right pin for a few seconds. I saw that the light went out and the pilot had gone out. I closed the cover again and lit the pilot again. Now the light changed from flashing 4 times to flashing 7 times. This time I left the knob in the pilot position for 10 minutes. When I came back to check the water heater, I saw that the light was flashing normally. I turned the knob to just the Hot setting and it fired up! MY CHOICE / NOW, WHAT'S YOURS? Please Subscribe, Like, and Share my Videos.

Pilot light went out one evening. Tried to relight and could never get the status light to start blinking after getting the pilot light to light. Finally tried the reset button and lit the pilot and the status light came on like it was supposed to! Thank you, you saved my family's shower time tonight!

This was extremely helpful! Thank you. My status light was not blinking at all. I switched to the off position and let it sit for 5 min as instructions said on the tank. Turned the knob to pilot and pressed and held in the control knob for 40 seconds. At 40 seconds, I continually hit the ignitor button while still keeping the control knob pressed in. I pressed the ignitor button prolly 10 times or so and the status light started blinking. I checked in the window and saw the pilot was lit and then turned the knob to the hot setting. All is good now.

Thank you so much for this video! I didn't have to short circuit the board, but I did leave it unplugged overnight. It fired up the next morning. Our Whirlpool tank isn't even 3 years old. Honeywell should be ashamed. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!!!

Thank you. Saved me $1,000 as the repair man wanted to just install a new one. Manufacturer gave me a choice of paying $30 for overnight shipping (for my free replacement part), $20 for second-day air and $10 for ground. Got it in two day with ground anyway. Followed the instructions in your link to simply swap out the front electrical panel and not touch the guts--and while it took 60 seconds and 30 presses--eventually fired right up. Manufacturer said it could take 90 seconds and 90 presses, so don't give up in the first 10 seconds if you try this as it might take time.

Even thought this video is now 6 years old it seems the Honeywell vavles continue having the same issue. New tank installed (A.O. Smith) in a remodel this year. A friend spent $700 with two different pluming companies who replaced the thermo-couple, then the vavle, and burner assembly before I came across this video. I figured if all the electrical/mechanical components had been replaced (besides the tank), and the venting was good there must be something else going on. I set to hot instead of A or B as the plumbers had done and it's worked without issues for 2 days. I didn't need to reset the valve. I turned the gas off, turned the valve to the off position for 30 minutes, and then restart the pilot. Thank you!

The overheating reset switch is what fixed it. It's working now. None of the videos, manuals, tutorials, etc. I've researched have said anything about that reset switch. I doesn't even look like a switch on my Bradford White. Thank you very much. This is a great video and saved me money I couldn't afford to spend.

You, my good sir, are a God send. As a first time home owner, discovering my hot water heater on the fritz terrified me. However, with your amazing knowledge and calm problem solving I just trumped my first test of adulthood. I never believed that I would feel this level of wonder at feeling hot water coming out of the tap. You, you amazing human being, deserve only the best parts of life.

I am waiting for my 5th control valve !!!! 5th in 4 years on my Home Depot purchased Rheem
heater. No hot water since new years eve... Grrrrrr
Being fed up with this BS, I stopped at Lowe's and was ready to just buy a new water heater
today from a different manufacturer.... AND low and behold.. OESmith gas heaters use the same HONEYWELL piece of crap control valve !!
I also talked to 2 plumber technicians today... Both basically refused to " TAKE my hard earned money " god Bless em...
Was told almost any heater " Without " a HONEYWELL gas controller is a good buy.

Thank you for the tips. We woke up this morning with no H/W and came down to learn that the Honeywell valve was unresponsive (no lights, couldn't light pilot). After opening it up and shorting the circuit board, it fired right up. I did not even remove the wiring harness from the circuit board before shorting around the board. That did the reset. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the tip about not turning it up too high. I've had both the 4-flash and 7-flash fail codes. Each time I had it turned up pretty far. I just re-lit it as set it between low and hot. We'll see what happens. The fail code is apparently cleared when you turn the knob all the way to "off" and leave it there for about a minute. Then, when you relight it, it will give you the normal blue status light.

It's really sad to know that I spent $500.00 for a new hot water heater with a 6 year warranty, just to find out that if you don't pay a professional to install it as well, you really don't have a warranty at all. So many lawyers it must have taken to make up this warranty package on this new age hot water heater. As I read from one other guy on here, my light stopped blinking on of all days Christmas, 10 degrees out side. I thought man I don't have the money to spend on a tech to come out here. So for my $47.50 a month I pay for computer service I jump on utube come to Rc Jr post on good old Whirlpool and good old Honeywell and pushed the reset button and Bada Boom the hot water tank in back in business! So glad for guys like him to help us keep alittle of our hard earned money in "Our" pockets! Thanks to all you guys that do these videos. Merry Christmas! and now it is! J Groom

I was still worried, I pressed the reset button and its working. I am so relieved. Mine is only 2 yrs old.

Boom! Started right up! Even with the light still flashing. I had just turned the temp up when it quit working since it's getting cold out.
The company that installed it wanted a big fee even though it's still under warranty. I'd rather put in a whole new heater than give them any money!

The biggest reason gas water heaters do not want to act right is because it is either having a hard time breathing, or a hard time venting. Gas products now have more safety features than the old style Non-FVIR water heaters. Air supply and venting are absolutely the 2 most important factors in water heater operation. Gas pressure also plays a role in the operation. Remember if there are any elbows in your vent, then make sure they are long sweep elbows and follow CAT-1 Venting. As a licensed technician, I see improper installations everyday. In a way I do not mind because it pays the bills. Remember, if your water heater gives you trouble from day one, then most likely there is an issue with installation. Don't get me wrong, there's shitty units out there and if you have one I can probably get you one for free. Keep in mind, if home owners read their owners manual, I would not have a job. So keep on ignoring those manuals lol

A million thanks. I'm in a vacation home 200 hundred miles from home and July 4th weekend and I replaced the thermalpile but only pilot light would light.. Got the pilot light to light but no burner and error code 4 blinks. Did some searching and found your video. I shorted out the top left and right pins until the blinking light went out and then did the restart sequence. Started laughing when the burner fired up. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. Reset button on the therm sensor did it for me. Valve seems ok. Just a note, the plumber told us previously that the water temp needs to be 120-140 for the dishwasher to work properly or your dishes don't dry correctly so we had ours set on A-B to get that temp. We have an A.O. Smith 40 gal. with the honeywell valve and has been in service for 8 years without any problems till now. Thanks again.

OK, so most of my home is electric. And yesterday I turned off the valve on my garage heater for the spring/summer season. I then showed my wife where the shut-off was outside the house next to the heater inside. I demoed the procedure to shut this valve off so that if she needed to when I was not here, she could. Life went on. tonight my wife told me the water heater was off. So I went into troubleshooting mode deluxe. I followed everything mentioned here including taking the little board out and shorting all the pins to ground. Watched all the videos and followed the links. Then it hit me..., Oh no! I "did" turn the gas back on yesterday, right? Nope.... I didnt... I'm an idiot... So after 2 + hours of trying to restart the water heater and tearing out the board, she's running like a top now. It always helps when it has gas. ; )

'...Honeywell sucks for continuing to distribute a crap product...'
Same problem with my Bradford White water tank and the Honeywell pilot system.
Constantly fails / goes out when the temp is higher.
(The water heater is fine and a quality product btw)
You have to wonder what their product testing does before they go live with production.

Have a water heater less than a week old and my pilot light is out and the new version of the Honeywell controller has been installed on the new unit. Re lit the pilot and waiting to see if it holds. The status light wasn’t lit (pilot is off or controller has been turned to off)
Hope this isn’t the start of having to babysit a garbage controller.

Remember if the switch on the bottom was indeed tripped, you will need to clean the flame trap under the water heater. The only 2 things that cause the TCO to trip is air supply or venting. Most likely theres dust stopping the air from getting to the combustion chamber. No matter how clean the area is, theres always dust.

Thanks. We just had a new Honeywell valve put on a gas hot water heater that's just over 2 years old.! Wished I saw your video sooner-would have asked for different valve. Worked 2 weeks now new one stopping every few days. Just 1goes off and indicates nothing with flashing lights. Going to turn our temperature down to hot from A. Hope that helps!

I watched alot of videos about this honeywell controller, the one tip that made all the difference was to not set it ABOVE HOT. For 7 years I dealt with it being intermittent and flaming out as much as 3 times in a day. Since I have set it just on HOT I've had only one pilot light out in 3 months.

    • @kwitwerikok8o863
      @kwitwerikok8o863 7 місяців тому

I hope this continues to work for you. I subscribed to the not above hot method and it really worked for a month or two. Now it won't work on anything at hot or below.

Thanks for the tip on the thermostat setting to keep this from throwing error codes.
I installed our Rheem water heater from Home Depot with one of these Honeywell pieces of junk about two years ago. (Sorry, but I felt the need to list all the guilty parties.) It's gone out a few times, after which I've found it with 7 code or nothing (no light blinking at all). I've been lucky enough to get it restarted just by going through the pilot ignition procedure. Sometimes the pilot lights while the 7 code is still flashing (!), but I just turn the knob and it fires up. A short time later, the light reverts to the normal 1 flash/3 seconds.
With a 30 gal tank and a family of four, we've had problems with running out of hot water in the past, so I've been keeping the knob set to "A." We use less of the hot water that way; two or three of us can take showers right after one another without running out of hot water. I guess we're going to have to live with slightly less hot water for awhile, because I'm going to take your advice and turn the knob down to the low side of "Hot" and see how that works out.

After nearly a week with no hot water and still waiting for a backordered gas valve replacement, I decided to look at what failed with my Honeywell. First, if you have any trouble codes, this probably won't help as these things have a tiny microprocessor on the control board. But if you just have the "pilot light works if you push in the dial, but goes out when you release the dial" problem, this may explain it. If you shut off the gas FIRST and then remove the white outer cover, you'll see the silver valve control module. You'll also see a couple pins sticking out about an inch. Those are leads for electromagnets inside the valve. It takes a security torx, but you can carefully remove all the screws and gently pull away the cover. Make triple sure the pins are not pulled out with that cover. The tolerances are really tight, and I saw a clear burn through on the wire winding from the electromagnet mechanism to one of the long lead pins. A soldering iron fixed that and some careful electrical tape placement helped limit any future shorts. Then put everything back together carefully, turn on the gas, and check for leaks 40 times. But that is all it took to repair mine. Just be aware there are plenty of ltiny parts to lose, and gas leaks are absolutely no joke. But if you need hot water sooner than the new valve can arrive, this may help.

We have the same problem. Thanks for the info in regards to the reset button. We ended up getting both the gas valve and the burner unit. Did pay 30 dollars for the shipping, they didn't want to send them together. So they want me to pay for a service call then shipping.... I insisted and finally they got tired of arguing with me and said they are going to send the whole unit. My suggestions to anyone out there (complain. complain. complain if you have a warranty) Honeywell/Whirlpool are scammers.

So happy you took your time to make this video. I have the same unit it's not even three years old . I came home to no hot water after a long day at work. I tried what you said and it's going to have to be drained, and probably a new Honeywell unit?

  • @jimmcgovern9022
    @jimmcgovern9022 7 років тому

Started getting a sulfur odor from the well water So I drained the water heater added about 3 cups of bleach refilled and let it set for about 1/2 hour then drained the water heater again. Flush until the water is running clear at the drain hose. Refilled, Then went to relight the pilot light, had spark but no gas, held the button in for about two to three minutes still no gas. Then you did me a big favor by showing me the reset button between the two red wires. Pushed the reset, held the pilot button for about a minute (that was a mistake) to much gas as I pushed the ignitor there was a mild thermo-nuclear reaction in the lower chamber, but it was enough to keep the pilot light lite..So I thank you and my wife thanks you. Now I can go to the next project on the honey-do list.
PS: the smell is gone but I don't know for how long...
