I've had a Nikon and TG4 and the RAW feature is it, especially for underwater. Take both snorkeling an after I processed the TG4 pictures they were stunning. Can't say enough how much I could recover in those underwater shots. If you are at all interested in using it for underwater photography, it is a no brainer, TG5!

Just bought an Olympus TG Tracker for the same purpose. Only in my case, I intend recording from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Vancouver, British Columbia.... probably around 3-4 Terabytes uploaded to icloud in two separate accounts, as soon as I can afford the £5-6000 it's going to cost for the flights, a car, and essential accommodation for the 4,000+ mile road trip of a lifetime. It will be my homage to the country I love, as a heartbroken returned emigre, back to Belfast, N Ireland, via a year in Aberdeen, Scotland, with two of my mother's sisters, after only 10 months in London, Ontario, 1957-58. My parents were 'homesick' after just 6 months. My brother Howard was born in London, Ontario, in June 1958, just two weeks before we returned to the UK. Guess where he is since 2000, as a born-and-bred Canadian?

As a camera I'd say the Olympus is the winner, but if you're diving being able to go down to 30m without a case is a huge benefit and cost savings. Yes Olympus offers a housing to get you go down to 45m (beyond recreational diving), but it's another 70% cost increase. Since I have good options above water, I think I'd go for the Nikon as a diving camera until I could afford a good diving case for my m4/3 camera. Almost every dive I make goes below the 15m mark where the Olympus TG5 is rated, but at the moment I have only gone below 30m a few times. Thanks again TCS for another great review.

And I really enjoyed to watch a review of this camera segment. Great attitude that you can still find good words for those cameras though you are reviewing anything from Pentax 645Z to Leica.

Awesome review. My wife and I are headed out on a vacation in three weeks (will be in Quebec and Ontario for a bit too). We are bringing our kayaks and folding bikes camping with us. I have a dry bag for my Panasonic FZ1000m2 bridge camera, but find myself missing a lot of shots because I have to stop paddling to get the camera out to shoot. I have an old Panasonic TS3 from 2011 that I used in the water and decided to look for a newer version. Unfortunately our trip starts before the release of the new TG-6 so I’m looking at the TG-5 now. Ideally I’d rent one for a couple of weeks instead of buying one, but not sure yet. The TG-5 looks compelling.

Sometimes I use Olympus TG-5 to record video. This camera has the autofocus problem in motion when you record video: the camera autofocus is working not quickly. The problem with camera autofocus in motion does exist. It's better to record in a static position.
Besides, there are digital noices in low light if your camera white balance seted as 'Auto' and I'd like to say the problem with diginal noice in low light can reduce if your camera white balance seted manually, not 'Auto'. After recording you can be processed your clips in a video editor in addition to reduce noices.

Yeah, panasonic has the same low-light perfomance when it comes to the same ISO. But you should keep in mind that olympus has 1 step brighter lenses and so that you should have compared 1600 nikon VS 800 or 1000 olympus in terms of the same shutter speed

Nice review. I am using the TG5 (since september 2017) for action photos and video while running and cycling. I am very satisfied about this camera. It is easy to use, no dust issues, the AF is very fast (much better than Lumix) and the quality of the photos/videos is good. If it had a larger sensor it would be one of the best compact camera's overall, I think.

A little lantern in the camera is amazing for macro footage in the dark, I normally use my cellphone because no camera do that natively. As I like macros, the TG-5 is the best in my opinion, and it's the most beautiful too, the kids were wrong.

What about the SeaLife DC2000? It's a 1" sensor with a 31mm equiv. f/1.8 lens. I've been curious about it, but the only reviews I ever see are specific to scuba usage.

Good review, even though I was looking for a comparison of their use for scuba photography (and I know the Olympus you pretty much need to use a housing for for scuba), this review still was very useful and gave me lots of good info.
For anyone else, I will say I've used the W300 a lot underwater, and spent a short time using the Olympus in a housing, both took decent photos. I probably preferred the Nikon since I didn't need a housing and it was just super simple to use underwater (where it is much harder to fiddle with options etc. and you're often relying on the auto-focus etc. more), and the Bluetooth auto transfer to the phone is handy too. Buuuuuttt, after going to 29m on a dive, and after a few years of good use, my w300 finally died... Now I'm trying to decide between getting another one or getting the TG-6... Seems the TG-6 does a bit more... But you have to spend twice the price when you factor in the housing... More when you factor in other lenses/gadgets for the housing... Tough choices...

This was interesting. When you compared the low-light performance of the two cameras I wasn't sure which one really looked better, but I think the Olympus took in a little bit more light. My thoughts are that generally when comparing cameras, sometimes one looks better with one scene and another looks better with another scene. In your low-light comparison you had a light on the building that was shining outwards toward the cameras. I would like to guess that when these two cameras are compared over a wide variety of different types of low-light scenes, maybe we would see different results. I think both cameras are pretty nice.

The W300 likely takes sharper pictures, has much better image stabilization, and is more affordable. The TG-5 takes better underwater video, has way better macro (W300 macro mode regressed significantly from the AW1XX series), take better lowlight shots and has much better white balance. It was a good review, but I will disagree that the W300 typically takes warm photos. Quite often my W300 will take cool photos. Sometimes perfect. It would be nicer to see these camera shoot identical scenes to make comparisons easier. Also with cameras like this you have to be very self-conscious about the sun. Overcast, front-lit, and back-lit photos all have dramatically different effects on white balance and have to be tested separately.

With regard to them "being able to go deeper than you ever need to go": I sold my TG-2 because it only could go down to 15 meters and when I got my PADI Advanced Open Water, I could go down to 30. I got an RX100 instead and a separate underwater housing.

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 5 років тому

The TG-5 is also rated to 15 meters by itself, but with the PT-058 housing it's rated to 45 meters. I use the housing even at shallower depths, because the large buttons and levers are easier to operate with gloves on than the controls on the bare camera.

    Excellent an informative video, thanks!
Question: How was the audio when doing videos with those cameras? No one ever seems to talk about it.

i get your explanation of why you are comparing to each other, but, just curious if you guys looked at any pics vs a cellphone. I was thinking of getting one of these cameras, for fishing but the pics that come out of my iphone SE, to me look really great.
One of these cameras would be better, significantly better, right?

I thought the Nikon had a little more/better dynamic range. Your thoughts? Though the Olympus is probably the camera I would grab.
