  • Even in the middle of winter nature gives us the ability to deal with our pain. Shagbark hickory bark can be carefully gathered, cleaned, roasted to bring out the oils and boiled. From there you did a cloth in the still warm (as hot as you can take it) decoction and wrap it around the painful area. It is especially useful for arthritis or "weather pains", pains that come and go with atmospheric pressure changes.
    The bark can be used over and over again until the decoction no longer gets dark. But don't throw the bark away. You can wrap it damp in aluminum foil, poke a few holes in the package, put it on hot coals on your grill, then put a tray of sea salt over the package and close the grill. The charring hickory bark will give that hickory smoke flavor to the sea salt which makes a great seasoning for fish, jerky rubs, and even corn on the cob to get that fresh grilled flavor.
