Snowy Owl in the Laundry Room
I received a call from a friend at the UW Stevens Point that several snowy owls had set up winter residence on the runways of Central Wisconsin Airport near Wausau, Wisconsin. This is a dangerous situation for both owls and planes alike. They needed volunteers to help trap the birds and help move them to a safer area. Two days of watching traps from the inside of a car, and this young adult male finally was caught. I volunteered my farm as a release site and after seeing it the bander decided it was the perfect place. The first boy arrived this morning and was fitted with a radio tracker and then released. That sounds easy but it actually took two hours of careful work to get him prepared and then set free. An amazing day with a snowy owl and friends and family in my laundry room (the owl felt the most comfortable there). And then to see him take to flight...words can not express how beautiful freedom is.

Sometimes healing is as simple as giving the body a bit of relief so it can heal itself. Here is a simple solution to a painful bruising. A client bruised the bottom of her foot. This was the topical salve I made up for her to use for one part of her pain management program. Forgive the scratches on my finger, I've been out in the woods a bit and like all wild people have gotten a few more bang...

Even in the middle of winter nature gives us the ability to deal with our pain. Shagbark hickory bark can be carefully gathered, cleaned, roasted to bring out the oils and boiled. From there you did a cloth in the still warm (as hot as you can take it) decoction and wrap it around the painful area. It is especially useful for arthritis or "weather pains", pains that come and go with atmospheric...

I have a client who's mother is wheelchair bound and she asked me if there was something I could do for bed sores, or the sores that happen when circulation is not very good and the person sits or lies down for long periods of time. This distilled hydrosol is very good for this, though it would also be good for red, cracked skin that comes with winter's winds, or for acne skin as well. While ev...

My first video that I am trying is just a simple walk into a spring fed alder swamp on my farm. I use winter alder bark and catkins for my medicinals. This video will be paired with an article that I am writing for my facebook page at: rlee.tomlinson

    Hi! I was wondering isn't it important to purify the pine pitch before infusing it into anything?

    You make it look so easy! Can you reccomend any other natural E.O. that could be put in the salve that doesn't have salicylic acid? Thankyou

    Using BEE's WAX is better. You'll have a SALVE that you can Rube on easily. Remember this stuff is very Sticky and hard to remove. You can use ALCOHOL as a Thinning Agent. This stuff will Burn very well too. Mix it with Cotton Balls for a Great Fire Starter. Mix a little Charcoal into the Pine Sap for a Great Glue. Also, you can Add Hair with this Sap to add Reinforcement to what ever Joints your Gluing or need Build Up On. You can use Pine Resin as a preservative for Strings and Rope. Bow Strings. This Pine Rosin when rubbed into the Bow String will help keep your Arrow Nock in place, so the Arrow Shaft isn't moving around on you while taking your Shot. You can use this Stuff as a Quick Tack for Sewing things like Leather and Cloth. It's a very good Emergency Patching System for Canoe that has gotten a Hole or Crack. Also, it will help close a Wound and help keep Wound Clean and Sterile. You can also Eat this Stuff if your Starving. Pine Sap was used as Chewing Gum before Rubber Gum came in. Mix your Favorite Mint and some Sugar and start Chewing. Really, the list of uses is Extensive. Have fun yaw. Remember, (DO UNTO OTHERS, AS YOU WOULD HAVE DONE UNTO YOURSELVES).................. GOD Bless All The Good You People Do.

    A smashed pulped onion or leek in a ladies stocking as a poultice over the injured area for 20minutes is a great way to stop severe bruising too should you not have any balm on hand.

    Very cool! I'm trying to think of a way to make a natural fruit flavor concentrates of non-citrus fruits like apple and peace, without the sugar, fiber, ect, just want the essence, so was thinking about investing in a bigger destiller and recycling the hydrosol with a few cycles of fresh fruit to really concentrate it. Does this sound like a feasible and efficient meathod to you? I've been wracking by brain all day to figure out the best and easiest way of doing this. I brew large batches of honey mead and would be nice to be able to add a little fruit essence to smaller batches on demand vs the alternative of blending in fruit juice or another 2-week ferment with chunks of fruit.

    Seems unlikely it is a sign of premature taming....much more likely the response of Pavlovian conditioning to countless mice in it's face. It is exhibiting the same reaction as it has to the thousands of mice it has hunted and eaten (before they possibly escaped) in the wild.

    I have tried several pine resins I purchased online, but none so far has the true pine smell I am looking for. I have tried Pinion Pine Resin, a clear/yellow rock pine and no luck.

    • @thialove2121
      @thialove2121 6 років тому

      @Gnome Beard; different pines have different properties as you are finding out. And when you combine several together, the product will be much different than each seperate in their own way. After I took a class of college chemistry, why some of my formulas worked and some didn't, became so much clearer: Including exactly how you make it. For instance, some ingredients have to be combined first, which makes another compound, and then add other ingredients to that new compound; whereas add all the ingredients together first and viola the end result is not the two sames...5 exact ingredients...processed (cooked) differently and you can get some radically different formulas! I love science.

      @@thialove2121 how beautiful that one doesn’t need “science” to heal and take care of ourselves. Science likes to take from ancestral wisdom and try to improve upon or dissect it. Don't need it….the medicines work just fine. BTW, I love Gnomes

    Thanks for the info about adding spruce. I have been using just white pine and it works great on my knee when I overdo and it starts screaming at me. It really takes the pain fast, and lasts a long time. I also make arnica tincture, and am considering trying a combo of the two. I'll add spruce in next time I do a batch, but agree on the beeswax- it's great for a takealong salve and for kids, etc. But I prefer the oil.
