I learned chord shapes up the whole fretboard back in the 90’s and it revolutionized how I played, both on electric and acoustic. Even when I play in bands it gives you the ability to not get lost in the mix by playing a higher chord shape if the other guitar player or keyboard player goes lower, or vice-versa. Great video - thanks!
So many players put off learning chord shapes up and down the fretboard! It’s such an important skill. I appreciate your comment Jim. Thanks a lot for checking out the video. 🙏

Hi Rusty, nice lesson. I am in the same boat as you were playing in church. Could you give an example of how you might approach a full song. We do How great Thou art, Vince Gill, could you give some examples of your though process ? Thank you Ian
Hey Ian, that would be a great topic! I will definitely do that in a future lesson! Thank you for the comment and I appreciate you watching my lessons🙏
Thanks Rusty, can't go wrong with triads. I'll tell you a short story about learning triads, i just purchased a new guitar last spring and smashed my index finger on my fretting hand. Did it stop me? No, i just learned to play differently using different fingers till i healed up. I found your other channel around the same time and you taught me more than I already knew so injuring my finger worked to my advantage besides i think there was a higher power involved. 😊

Hello friend, I'm an acoustic player and at our previous church, I led our worship for about 10 years. In my case, the barriers to entry were very low; we didn't have anyone with any real music ability. 😅. The church we are now at has good musicans, but after watching Rusty, I'm starting to think, maybe, I could do this again, with the electric? Being an acoustic player, I'm not there yet. If you are in a position where you are more confident with your electric playing, have a chat with your worship leader and see if you can join them for practice and see how things go. Practice is a great, lower pressure environment. God bless - Rod
Hey Karen, good to see you here! It’s definitely a different mindset. But I love playing on our worship team. Thanks Karen and enjoy the rest of your week 🙏
It helps if you have a Worship Leader who can hear where triads higher or lower will benefit and contrast within the tune. Good points made here. I know I naturally gravitate to doing something other than what others are playing; keyboards and other guitars.
thank you for the lesson. This opens up a new perspective for me, as I am previously playing satanic death metal music and now playing guitar in church.
Old school church musician here.. best advice I can give to new musicians is the oldest lesson in the book. Learn the songs in all keys and try to memorize the chords and play without a chart. It sounds hard at first but it opens your horizon in so many ways. We have a few different worship leaders so sometimes we play the same songs in different keys, or people spontaneously throw in a song that wasn’t rehearsed. Once you start memorizing songs you will get used to the sounds of the intervals and automatically know what to play without a chart even on songs you never played before. The younger players in our group and even our good guitar players who can’t play without a chart always get mesmerized and think I’m some kind of mind reader wizard when I hear a new song once and automatically start playing it without the charts. I tell them the same thing… start memorizing the simple songs and learn to play them at least in the CAGED keys. It will open the world for you…
So triads? They can be used or abused for anything. If you feel music appropriate for a chuch you can adjust your playing style for that moment. That my friend is faith
Triads are used to visualize the fretboard in Rock, blues, country, and jazz. It’s the style that changes. The sound. Thanks for checking out the video Timothy.🙏
When I did electric guitar in church, I focused on sound more than licks. I just went for the same sound & style that I used back in the '80s new wave era: delay & ambience, not much overdrive (compression is better), and open droning upper strings. The big trick is to *not double what another guitar may already be doing.* If there is an acoustic guitar banging out the chords, there is no need for an electric guitar to double up on it. It's obnoxious and unprofessional. And if there is a church pianist/keyboardist, lay way the heck out and put in no more than subtle runs here and there. There is no telling a lady church pianist/keyboardist not to play entire arrangements themselves. I have tried and tried again: it's just no use. These women are used to sole accompanying, so just lay back and give them lots of room 🤐
Right on! We just need to play what’s right for the moment. This is where, having other rhythm and lead line options come to play. Thanks for checking out the video. 🙏
I stumbled until i disregarded my extensive musical knowledge and technique, and played one note per song through a huge pedal board. No thanks. Too stupid for me.

In my opinion, skills and tones, ect matters, but the most important thing is that, we must be filled with The Holy Spirit and we must abide in Christ.
