I'm sure that many people didn't realize that Living Colour was a black hard rock band until MTV started showing their videos. People probably did a double take when they connected the song with this hard rock band which is black. A similar comparison was many years earlier in the early 1970's. Charley Pride was a black country singer, who amassed a number of hits, but people as a whole were seeing a black country music star at a time when country music was made up of white male country stars. Female country singers were also getting into country music, but Charley Pride was the trailblazer for a black artist to do country music.
@@amb2745 Chuck Berry..... Pioneer of Rock and Roll, Elvis, AC/DC, and many others were inspired by him. Rock has never been about color, it has always been about the unheard masses. There is no Race to it, Jimmy Hendrix is one of our guitar Gods. People are just too dumb to research history.

Seriously, I consider him the bridge between Jim Hendrix and Tom Morello, still performing. Support Living Colour, find a show, buy a cd, incredible music hard work, great band.
Living Colour was in HEAVY rotation on MTV back then. None of us alive for the "Hey Day" of MTV were surprised the band was all black. Hell we all loved em because they rocked. Music see's no skin.
If you rock then you're good. Despite what the media says the hard rock/metal community is extremely welcoming to minority artists and women. Sure, there may be some hardcore jerk-offs who don't like it. But they have no voice or influence in the genre.
It's a bit disappointing that when this was released, NO ONE thought twice about them being an all black group. Today, it makes people's jaw drop. To some, this is considered "progress".
What I think is funny about this is that lots of people don't realize, most of the meta kids in the late 80' weren't the weird gang of murderers with leather and chains you see as stereotyped in movies now. We were the AP science kids that liked dungeons and dragons, those leather jacket kids whose parents beat them, the black kids that got ostracized at majorly white schools. It was the misfits table of kids that learned to sew patches on our denim jackets if we could scrounge one up. The skim color of the artists was irrelevant at the time, it feels like we've taken a step backwards to hear young people so shocked about incredible black artists in metal. Why not? Do it now!

I saw these guys in the early 90s, and seriously, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Vernon Reid (that awesome guitarist) jumped in the crowd, crowd surfed over to the balcony in the venue, he climbed up and ran through the crowd where I was. The crowd went absolutely crazy, I honestly don't think any other band had ever done something like that in my tiny country. My friend got to touch Vernon too.
I remember my mind exploding when this video premiered. We saw them open for The Stones soon after, but my favorite Living Color show was several years later at the Avalon in Boston in support of the album "Stain". Vernon has one of the most original artists in generations. Corey's voice is one of a kind and despite their success and popularity they are still a very under appreciated band.

Did my first stagedive at one of their concerts (in Amsterdam). Still love the band. Their singer did shows recently with musicians that played with David Bowie. Still a great voice.
I grew up listening to Living Color in high school during the late 80's; them being an "all black band" was of no consequence, they're just an awesome rock band.
You guys just blew my mind... I was huge fans of both Living Color and Beastie Boys in the 80s but I've never made the connection to Rage Against The Machine. You are absolutely correct... if they colab'd you'd totally have RATM. Lol... wow
"I swear this was sung by another group." I think he's associating the song with CM Punk, and that leads him to have a different picture of who performed it, because he saw Punk and the song together so often.
1986. The lead singer was in the movie Platoon with Charlie Sheen, Tom Beringer and William DaFoe the same year. My brother introduced me to this band back in 1986. I was hooked. Great channel 🤘❤️
Another good reaction guys. It absolutely shocked me when MTV back in the day what's playing decent kit I come across these guys and discover that is all a bunch of brothers. That was the trip. But, we all bleed red
Living Colour is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1984. The band currently consists of guitarist Vernon Reid, lead vocalist Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish (who replaced Muzz Skillings in 1992). Stylistically, their music is a creative fusion influenced by heavy metal, funk, jazz, hip hop, punk, and alternative rock. The band's lyrics range from the personal to the political, including social commentary on racism in the United States. Living Colour has released six studio albums so far. The band rose to fame with their debut album Vivid in 1988. Although they scored a number of hits, Living Colour is best known for their signature anthem "Cult of Personality", which won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1990. They were also named Best New Artist at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards and won their second Grammy Award for their follow-up album Time's Up (1990). Their third album, Stain (1993), was also well received by music critics. After disbanding in 1995, Living Colour reunited in late 2000, and has released three more studio albums since then: Collideøscope (2003), The Chair in the Doorway (2009) and Shade (2017). The band has been in the process of working on new material for the follow-up to Shade.
I'm from Australia and my friends and I loved this band, we weren't shocked that they were an all "black" band, we embraced it. We listened to a lot of Thrash Metal in those days and a band like this introduced us to a wider variety of music. A lot of bands back in the late 80's and early 90's often tried to incorporate some crossing over. I found the bands and their fans of heavier music back then always encouraged open mindedness, to think for yourself and were critical of political hypocrisy and injustice etc. Living Color was such an exciting band back then, and I'm so glad I got to see them in concert, cause those days flew by so fast.
Vernon Reid is a great guitarist. Check out that whole album (to use an antiquated term) because it is packed with great songs. This song is just the tip of the iceberg because all the songs are impactful. The original lineup of Corey Glover vocals, Vernon Reid guitar, Muzz Skillings bass and Will Calhoun drums gave us one of the all time great debut albums.
I seen them open for The Rolling Stones in 1989. This is one of the few bands that I went in early to see. They were awesome!!! Take care and stay safe 😷
In fact one of the producers said about this band: "The best thing that happened in the nineties is Living Colour." The album 'Vivid' was produced by The Glimmer Twins. And we know this guys also as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards... Just FYI.
1988. I read an article that had Mick Jagger raving about a band of hard rocking black dudes he saw playing at CBGB's in NYC. I ordered the album before it hit the record stores and had it the first day it came in. It was even better than I expected. One of my favorite bands and even had Corey Glover (the singer) land on his head right in front of me after doing a back-dive off the stage. We were watching Vernon Reid jamming out and didn't see Corey jump. It was during an encore and that was the end of a great performance. Corey was hauled back onto the stage and made it off on his own two feet. All was good.
I was 17 when ILC came out. They balled. Us kids didn't give a damn about color. It was just good music. THAT you cannot deny. I learned the song on bass within a week of hearing it. EPIC to this day.
The lead singer is Corey Glover. He was in the movie Platoon. Vernon Reid is the guitarist, Will Calhoun is the drummer, and Muz Skilling was the original bassist in this video (who was replaced by Doug Wimbish). They are still touring. They need to be inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!✊🏿✊🏿
I was a senior in high school 88/89. I loved this song!! It was relevant to me then, but even more so now. Corey Glover has an amazing voice and the rest of the band is equally talented!! Wish I could see them now. I’m guessing they’re slightly older than I am, but probably still musicians and influencers in their own right (just as they were innovators back then). Remembering though, R&B was the birth of rock. Many white musicians morphed with black music (Elvis, anyone?). It’s natural that black musicians would reclaim it, modernize it, AND make relevant political statements that still resonate today. I’m just a simple Texas girl (yeah, Texas) and I love this band and this song, particularly for its message. Keep on, keeping on! 💕
Another collaboration at the time was Anthrax and Public Enemy... Lead singer from Living Colour became an actor ( gonna get "high high" in Platoon)....Vernon Reid was one of the best guitarist at the time also... there's more good music with this band...
You got to jam Skindred - Under Attack. Or even better roll Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue, you guys are pretty sharp so it'd be interesting to see how much of what it's about you catch.
You must react to the following songs which came out in the 80s or early 90s: Ratt-" Round and Round" Guns n roses-"November Rain", "Paradise City", "Knocking on heavens door", "Civil war", "Sweet child o mine" Warrant- "Heaven" Van Halen- "Unchained", "Panama", "Hot for teacher", "Jump" Beastie Boys- "No sleep 'til Brooklyn" Aerosmith/Run-DMC- "Walk this way" Public Enemy/Anthrax-"Bring the noise" Cinderalla (This was a band in the 80s)- "Shelter Me", "Shake me", "You don't know what you got til it's gone"
Always looking for new react videos, been binging on ya'll and some alky, Seriously look into the cult of personality by definition, it gets deeper. \m/
Living Colour was part of the Black Rock Coalition which also included Fishbone, 24/7 Spyz, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Victor Johnson of the Busboys, Total Eclipse and Sammy Hagar.
I was an intern in development for a studio but my parents were pretty connected with record people at the time I saw these guys in a club circa 1986. I called everyone. I frigging stalked them. They were so interesting & intelligent besides being obviously talented and had that it factor. They had already signed a record deal by the time I approached them that became this. But I will always appreciate that they showed up for me. I had inherited a gay bar because it was LA in 1986 & yeah, it trickled down to the college aged neice. They showed up in 87 and 88 - when they were big and on the radio- to do benefits I had. That was f*cking huge for any artist at the time much less black men. Ripped, gorgeous young black men. They risked a lot by that. I am forever grateful. And I miss that crazy time.
You guys should check out One Day As A Lion. It's a side project from the singer of Rage Against the Machine featuring the original drummer of the Mars Volta.
And for the record I think this is probably the most chaotic and magnificent guitar solo that has ever crossed mainstream radio Airwaves. I think it belongs in a Slayer song and it's just cool that he managed to get all this craziness in here
Corey is wearing a Body Glove short "wetsuit". Back in the day it was quite popular with some folks to wear body glove items or other tight "biker shorts" type of clothing. It sort of went in line with those that dressed in surfer mode or just general "beach vibe" apparel. The bright neon colors fit in perfectly with 80's fashion, which is popular once again. Everything always comes back into style eventually. :-)
Living Colour had the backing of Mick Jagger, who produced a few tunes on their first album Vivid. Certainly couldn't hurt in getting record companies to open their minds. You forget that MTV was EVERYWHERE in 1988 (and actually showing videos nearly 24-7), and most kids probably saw this video before seeing hearing this song on the radio, so that shock wasn't as big as you think back in the day.
I'll be 52 Dec 22nd and graduated HS in 87' we knew from MTV(They played this video) that these guys were black. Yes, a little shock value when you'd go see them and 90% of the audience is young long haired white guys with Motley Crue, Ozzy, Van Halen shirts on etc rocking it out to these guys. We didn't care the color of their skin we just enjoyed that they put on a great show back here in Houston 1989. The whole 80s was just a party. All genres of music was good and pretty much everyone liked at least some songs from each types of music. Think that what separates at least to me the 80s being the best decade of music.
HAHA! Without the internet we had no idea WTF was going on back in the day. Just made me smile. Good vid guys, but just because we didn't have google we didn't exactly just walk around bumping into walls all day. (shit, I'm old how do I make a smiley face emojicon thingy...
saw them in concert in 1987 in New Jersey, at Montclair State University, on their first MTV Tour, double bill with the Godfathers.... the 80's rocked...
Song hit the radio a couple months before the video dropped on MTV. Everyone did think they were white, until the video dropped. The guitarist Vernon Reid was fire, probably the most underrated guitarist of that era. Oh, and that was a neon body glove wet suit the lead singer was wearing with his tuxedo jacket.
You know back in the 80s they were never referred to as the "the black band" they were simply Living Colour

You guys just blew my mind... I was huge fans of both Living Color and Beastie Boys in the 80s but I've never made the connection to Rage Against The Machine. You are absolutely correct... if they colab'd you'd totally have RATM. Lol... wow
Exactly!
This is one of the greatest rock songs, ever. PERIOD!
CM PUNK!! Wearing the neo Body Glove wetsuit!!! SO UNDERRATED!!!!!🤘🤘 That ish is so dope!!!
You guys should do "primus-them damn blue collared tweakers" at woodstock one of the best crowds I have seen u wont regret it
Vernon Ried on guitar and Corey Glover on vocals. What a frigging combo
Classic song fam. Keep doing your thing.
Still over thirty years later, one of my favorite hard rock bands, album and song of all time.
This band were amazing! Great musicians and fantastic lyrics. Probably more relevant now than ever!
Wear a cup on stage in the 80’s???? No sir you showed what you’re packing then! 😂😂
70s too! 😂
"I swear this was sung by another group." I think he's associating the song with CM Punk, and that leads him to have a different picture of who performed it, because he saw Punk and the song together so often.
Great reaction as always, Iove this Living Colour song, a classic!!, can wait for the next Tool song... how about Parabol/Parabola
One of the best rock riffs ever!
Love this damn band and song ❤😂
"When a leader speaks, that leader dies" Wow that hit me in the feels really hard. 😭
Back when MTV still played music.
Another great quote from that song was "When the leader speaks, the reflection lies"
Its actually "when mirror speaks, the reflection lies
@@gokulvarma627 and "when a leader speaks, that leader dies"
@@ladyravn yaaaa
Respect for dropping s Stuck Mojo reference.
This song definitely stands the test of time...
LOVE this song, AND this band! They truly WERE "Living Colour"! Thanks for your reaction.
1986. The lead singer was in the movie Platoon with Charlie Sheen, Tom Beringer and William DaFoe the same year. My brother introduced me to this band back in 1986. I was hooked. Great channel 🤘❤️
that guitarrist is super good
Another good reaction guys. It absolutely shocked me when MTV back in the day what's playing decent kit I come across these guys and discover that is all a bunch of brothers. That was the trip. But, we all bleed red
You guys should try some Megadeth. "Holy Wars...Punishment due" It is EPIC
Monstar Riojas Thats mandatory
This wasn’t the only black band that played rock. Way before them there was Funkadelic. Check out Maggot Brain, Cosmic Slop.
This song is so awesome
I'm from Australia and my friends and I loved this band, we weren't shocked that they were an all "black" band, we embraced it. We listened to a lot of Thrash Metal in those days and a band like this introduced us to a wider variety of music. A lot of bands back in the late 80's and early 90's often tried to incorporate some crossing over. I found the bands and their fans of heavier music back then always encouraged open mindedness, to think for yourself and were critical of political hypocrisy and injustice etc. Living Color was such an exciting band back then, and I'm so glad I got to see them in concert, cause those days flew by so fast.
they were all over MTV!!
Where's my fellow "Straight Edge Society" members at?? (name of CM Punk's fans).
Back in 2009-2010 anyways lmao
That is NOT Billy Blank. His name is Corey Glover. No relation to Danny. Corey had a part in Platoon.
I seen them open for The Rolling Stones in 1989. This is one of the few bands that I went in early to see. They were awesome!!! Take care and stay safe 😷
Living Color came it in 1988. One of my favorite bands of all time. Vernon Reid is one of the top guitar players.
We should hang out and quarantine...drink smoke and rock out🤘
Sounds like a plan
Vernon is even crazier than the way he dresses. Found that out hanging with him at Sam Ash in Clearwater one day.
I was 17 when ILC came out. They balled. Us kids didn't give a damn about color. It was just good music. THAT you cannot deny. I learned the song on bass within a week of hearing it. EPIC to this day.
That is so funny. Hollywood, what you said at the end reminds me of that scene from Blazing Saddles when the governor meets the sheriff.
Tons of truly prophetic lines. You really have to listen to this song bc you will pull out something new out each time.
If you're looking for an old school rap/metal collab check out Public Enemy & Anthrax "Bring The Noise."
You got to jam Skindred - Under Attack. Or even better roll Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue, you guys are pretty sharp so it'd be interesting to see how much of what it's about you catch.
Mick Jagger of the Stones got them signed and produced their first album which this is from.
You must react to the following songs which came out in the 80s or early 90s:
Ratt-" Round and Round"
Guns n roses-"November Rain", "Paradise City", "Knocking on heavens door", "Civil war", "Sweet child o mine"
Warrant- "Heaven"
Van Halen- "Unchained", "Panama", "Hot for teacher", "Jump"
Beastie Boys- "No sleep 'til Brooklyn"
Aerosmith/Run-DMC- "Walk this way"
Public Enemy/Anthrax-"Bring the noise"
Cinderalla (This was a band in the 80s)- "Shelter Me", "Shake me", "You don't know what you got til it's gone"
3:43 Hollywood wasn't ready 🤣🤯
Do "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" from them, for even more uncommon genre crossover. : )
Lucky enough to see Living Colour live a few years back, they are still amazing.

Please react to BODY COUNT - THERE GOES THE NEIHBORHOOD
Good idea
Yessssss!!! Excellent recommendation!
Or any body count song
Coming right up
Or BC rendition of ST Institutionalized
Singer is Corey Glover who was an actor in Platoon. Vernon Reid is the guitar player. He's badass.
