@@jake4524 Season 5 is the final bit of setting up the chessboard for the conclusion of the series.. Jon’s rescue of the Wildings, Ramsey in Winterfell, Daenerys and Tyrion connecting, Littlefinger’s machinations, Arya’s training, and Cersei’s treatment at the hands of the High Sparrow… all of it has major impact for the next two episodes and last 3 seasons. The only thing we were missing this seasons was Bran… but we can’t talk about that without *spoilers*

The dynamic between Dany and Tyrion here, the talk they have about their fathers, the two families' intertwined past, the ruling elite and breaking the wheel, all of it is very engaging. The intensity between Sansa and Reek as they lock eyes and finally, after so many false hopes, you see a little bit of Theon come out. A little bit of light in all the blackness. The walkers appearing on top of that foggy hill like the four horsemen of apocalpyse >>>

When Jon holds Longclaw in the air and yells "Night's Watch With Me!" as the handful of Brothers in Black run to the opposite direction of the retreating sea of Wildling gray. The freeze frame moment leading up to the Valyrian Steel revelation. The ending with Night King slow walking through the creaking plank. Those are the three shots I live for. The cinematography is impeccable. It's emotive and ominous. This one's up there with the top ones.

Hardhome is one of my favorite episodes for the ambience alone. The dark and barren looking snowy panorama throughout the evacuation always gives me slow anxiety. The environment feels very "Othery"..pun intended. This is a continuation of the darkness of the recent episodes. As I said last time thr North just feels like a dystopian fairy tale inverted on its head right now, mesmerizing in its eerie silence.

Season 3 and 4 were dark in terms of theme and plot lines. But I believe season 5 is the more effed up of the entire series in terms of sheer pain and misery for both "heroes" and "villains."

Valyrian steel can kill a White Walker but the making of it was lost when old Valyria met its doom centuries ago. The best that can be done is recasting it like how the Lannisters recast Ned Stark's very large Valyrian steel sword into two smaller swords.

This episode was critically acclaimed and I absolutely love it because I love the apocalyptic undertone of the battle, Sapochnick's direction is very different from the previous battles. Episodes like Hardhome is why it's worth reminding this season won an unparalleled total of 12 Emmys (Breaking Bad won 16 total in context) and was reaching peak viewership. That's why I love this despite the polarizing way the season ends. "Wicked Games" is the perfect theme for this season. No season with a Hardhome in it should be considered a net negative in any logical way even though they deviated from super important things like Jeyne Poole lol.

I mean I totally understand you "symphatizing" with Cersei: It feels bad to watch someone be in that desperate of a situation, humiliated, I felt that too. But I think saying that she does everything for the good of her children is being too generous. I'm sure that's what she thinks she is doing, but rather, she comes across as quite the archetype of a narcissistic mother: Who sees her children as extentions of herself, and wishes to be in control of them. It’s so hypocritical of Cersei to preach about how Margaery and Tywin will use Tommen to meet their goals and pull him apart… Sure, Margaery wants to be the queen, and Tywin wanted to lead a successful reign through his grandson… But the most toxic influence in his life is Cersei herself. Without her, he would potentially rule the kingdom wisely (albeit as ruthlessly as Tywin would have deemed necessary) and enjoy having a loving wife. Tywin and Margaery both understood the importance of their cooperation, so they wouldnt necessarily have pulled Tommen in different directions… This is of course all hypothetical now. But when Margaery controlled Joffrey, Tywin did express he was pleased with it. However, Cersei certainly will bring upon distress and conflict, because *she* wants to be in control of Tommen and the kingdom, and can't accept him being happy with Margaery.

So! the whole "Faceless Man" thing just screams actor training to me and may be why I enjoy this storyline more than most. Not having read the books, I wonder how much of that comes from the textual representation of this journey and how much is tv writer interpretation, but I'd wager it's similar.
One thing that really makes the connection for me is a technique in acting called Neutral Mask. Essentially, while wearing a plain mask, the actor challenges themselves to inhabit pure neutrality in their physical form as well. Still a human form, but losing all mannerisms, gaits, habits, memories, injuries, etc that have resulted in the unique posture and presentation we all have.
It is much easier to build a character that is unlike yourself as an actor if you are starting from a neutral place, rather than starting with your own mannerisms and habits. Character actors typically need do this much more than leading roles. This skill is why some actors feel like remarkably different people in every role, and others seem to be playing different versions of themselves.
Arya's journey is the same thing. To be believable as an assassin, she has to build her character's backstory from the place of "no one," or neutrality, rather than trying to alter her own mannerisms as Arya Stark and step right onto stage, so to speak. To blend in, she has to fully commit to her new identity. Carrying parts of herself into it is a much bigger burden than shedding them and starting from scratch.

"Break the Wheel" as beautiful as this invented dialogue by Daenerys is (because it doesn't have it in the books), it doesn't make any sense. She, a Targaryen, wants to rule and break this wheel, but this wheel was created by the Targaryen family, who spent more than 250 years in absolute power, so if she is queen of Westeros, she will only be returning with the wheel that Aegon the first built when he conquered Westeros 🤣

When Daenarys says she wants to break the wheel what she means is she wants the exact same system of government but with her in control of it. I don't think the writers of this show have any idea what they're talking about. This is why the dialogue got so strange after they overtook the books. Breaking the "wheel" (feudal monarchy) would mean giving up her power and claim to the throne and making the kingdoms of Westeros republics. Otherwise after she dies the same power struggles she vowed to end would start again.

Hardhome is one of my fav GOT episodes. The head Wight walker is the Night King he has the dark power of necromancy. Yes Longclaw is a Valyrian steel only that and dragon glass & fire kills Wights.

My favorite episode. Reveals just how terrifying the white walkers truly are and the threat they are to the worlds of men.

Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun, nicknamed Wun Wun, is a giant.
Wun Wun is at least fourteen feet tall, even larger than Mag the Mighty, and possesses the strength of twelve men. Whilst typically passive, he will lash out if provoked. He is vegetarian, and speaks the Old Tongue.
How Wun Wun got his name -The author George R.R. Martin is a fan of the NY Giants of America football ( namely not soccer ), he lost a bet to a friend who is a fan of the football team Dallas Cowboys, their logo and colors are blue and silver and show a star on their helmets.
George asked his friend what he wanted as a prize, his friend replied I want to be a character in your book, George created Ser Patrek of King's Mountain ( protects Stannis's Wife ), Wun Wun = number11 number 11 the Jersey number of Phil Simms of the NY Giants..... the rest is in the future.😉

Your getting there nice one. The reason there is no more Valryian steel is because it was forged with dragon fire. Every head of Westeros great houses holds one, passed down from father to son, going back to Bran the builder - the original Stark who built the wall and winterfell. All northerners are descendants of the first men. "The north remembers" was an old northern quote used by Rob. And when they made him King, "We know no King but the King of the north, who's name is Stark" - also an old northern quote. The real meaning of them has been lost to time. Ned could have told his kids more had he lived. Those bloody Lannisters eh?

This episode certainly shows us what happens when people are left to fight against the army of the dead. They didn't get anywhere near the number of Wildlings onto the ships that Jon had hoped for. And the "head white-walker" is known as "The Night King."

I always wondered...was it purely coincidence that John arrived at Hardhome just before the White Walkers attacked? Or could the arrival of John and the Night's Watch somehow have triggered the White Walker attack?

Hey Calypso, this episod shows why Tywin didn't trust Cersei. He said to her, "It's not becasue you are a woman that I don't trust you. It's because you are act smarter than you thin k you are." Cersei's games of manipulation to avoid marrying Lores led her to get in leadgue with the faith militant. As a bonus they to Margerie for her. However she underestimates the zeal of religious zealots. Now they have taken her as well. She did what Tywin always feared, she let her emotions lead her to a short term win without understanding the long term ramifications. CErsei is great at oppressing, not ruling. This is what her father feared, and it hasd come to past.
