I went through about 25 minutes of combat in this scene, standing up, hands sweating until I at some point realized that I was believing Senua's delusions and that I was supposed to give up. I felt heartbroken but had to accept and had to let go. Truly an ending like no other. I'm still not sure how I feel about that ending but it was the first time a game made me think like the character, so much so that I kept slashing without even thinking. Just endless respawns and ignoring the voices, determined to prove myself, to myself as it turned out.

It's a nice song that's for sure and I think it fits the atmosphere very well, especially when you are immersed into the character. It's such a pity the gameplay doesn't match the song's excellent. Heck, look at the final battle alone! Just that alone. Sorry, that's a repetition disaster.

"I learnt the hard way, to not be afraid of death. Because a life without loss is a life without love. You turn your back on death...and all you can see is the shadow that it casts. The longer you hide from it the longer the shadow grows, until all you can see is darkness. When our time comes, we must look death in the eye and embrace it as a friend. Only then can we let go of our fear, and emerge from our darkness."

In the very beginning of the game we see a girl named Senua who is going to hell to save the soul of his boyfriend named Dillion. She believes Dillion and everyone in her village suffered and died because of her darkness ,and Hell Queen Hela is torturing Dillion’s soul. Senua’s mother Galenna also had that darkness and committed suicide when Senua was a child to save others from her darkness. But more we play the game more truth behind this darkness’s story starts to reveal in a great way.
Actually Senua is a mental patient who is suffering from severe psychosis and is dealing with the loss of her beloved Dillion. Who was killed by the Northmen Tribe! Since she suffers from hallucinations, it’s difficult to trust what you see. The whole story twists and turns as you move forward, taking down demons, overcoming obstacles, and finally coming face to face with what lies in the center of it all. The end tells a lot about Senua, so it’s important to sit back and really take it in.
Senua’s father is a very religious man who kept her locked in a room full of runes so it makes sense that during her tribulation, her psychosis would use those same runes and stories to guide her along. Her father believes, to save everyone from her darkness all these stuffs should be done. Her father was not a good man and he force her to believe that she have a darkness that’s why people are dying in her village. In fact he willingly sold his own people to northmen , just to save himself.
Senua starts to remember something she buried in her mind long ago, the death of her mother. Throughout the game, it’s said that Senua’s mother killed herself in order to spare those around her from her darkness. Like Senua, she suffered from psychosis, and many saw it as a curse that brought about bad tidings. Deaths, storms, bad luck, and more were believed to be caused by her. Yet, Senua's mother didn’t kill herself, though she did try very hard to not have people suffer. Instead, it was Senua’s father who led the villagers, as they burned her alive as if she were a witch. It was what the gods demanded.
This memory of her mother’s death brings other thoughts rushing back as well. How her father abused her mother, kept Senua locked up and terrified, convinced her that she was cursed and that all bad things happened because of her. How it was all due to the gods and he was just trying to protect her. A rage builds up inside her and she believes that Hela is actually her father and she goes to face her. She starts to go through all the stages of grief as she moves to confront the last demon holding her love Dillion hostage.
Her anger is at its highest as Hela sits over her, just staring blankly, but that eventually descends into her pleading for Dillion, her lost love, and willing to give up herself. In the end, she chooses to just accept her fate as Hela drives her sword into Senua’s chest. Senua is dead, after vowing to not let her father take her life or have any further control over her it is done. We next see Hela, holding Dillion’s skull that Senua carried throughout the entire game, staring into its empty sockets. It’s not until Senua dies, though, that Hellblade’s story all comes together. As Hela sits there with the skull, she’s no longer in Helheim. And it appears as if she is crying - not something you’d expect since at one point Senua was convinced that Hela was her father in some form. At least it seemed that way. As the final cutscene continues, Hela walks to the edge of the platform she’s on and lets the skull fall to never be seen again. As the camera pans away from the skull and back to Hela, we see Senua sitting there, beaten down, but far from defeated.
It turns out that Hela was Senua deep down inside and that makes a lot of sense. Hela rules Hel in Norse mythology, and that’s the world that Senua’s psychosis created so it only makes sense that she would be its ruler, knowingly or not. While it was the loss of Dillion and her father’s abuse that drove Senua to this state in Hellblade, it was ultimately her who created this hell for herself. Her grief and the fact that she blamed herself for everything that transpired in her life caused her to turn inward and lock herself down. The voices she hears, a maddening part of her psychosis, pull her thoughts back and forth leaving her confused which made matters even worse.
But, thanks to Dillion’s lessons from when he was alive, and that you hear repeated through Hellblade’s story, Senua slowly came to realize that she had to triumph over herself, that only she could escape the dark twisted world of her mind. During the fight with Hela and the discarding of the skull, Senua finds acceptance. Yes Dillion is gone, and yes her father is a large source of her pain, but she realizes that she must be strong and move on. She relied heavily on Dillion before he passed, but that’s no way to live. One must be strong alone as well and Hellblade’s story taught her that even though it was a nightmare to get through.
While the voices in her mind left before the fight with Hela, they have returned at the end. Psychosis isn’t something so trivial that it can be miraculously cured, that’s just unrealistic. However, it shows that Senua has found new strength that she will use going forward. Before it ends, Senua asks us, the players, to follow her on her new adventure. One that we pray is free from the demons she fought so valiantly to overcome.

Excellent summary of plot . A few questions still remains in my head. Did she really travel on vikings territory or she was imagining that as everything else in game ? Also who exactly was Druth and what role he had in her life ?

    • @PLHarpoon
      @PLHarpoon 6 років тому +148

      Here's how I understand it.
The first question is hard to answer. Probably she stumbled upon a place that looks similar to what she knew of Helheim and she imagined the rest. I'm saying that because it's hard to imagine that in here state at that moment she could find a passage from northern England to Scandinavia.
The second question is easy. He was a slave of the Vikings (for 6 years) who escaped them during a raid by running through the fire (perhaps it was the same party that raided her village). Senua found him during her self-imposed exile in the forest and before his death he told her stories about Viking gods - that's why she could imagine them.

@@LecherousLizard Because the physical combat was the least important aspect of it all. "The most important battles are of the mind, not the sword". And which game has a more challenging battles? The only way battles differ in video games is that patterns enemies use are a bit more varied in some - nothing different in the core of it. The moment you will see a not "brain dead easy" battle would be when we let actual AI battle with you with all of the power of the engine at its disposal, learning to fight while also creating moves (within the boundaries of the engine) for itself. Like chess playing AIs out there. You give it the board, but it learns to play, makes its own moves, does its own calculations based on the things it learned.
A battle like that would not only be hard, it would be unwinnable for a human. As is the case with current top chess engines that can only play against each other as no human alive is good enough to beat them anymore.
But that is a very long way from today. In current times, all you can hope for are more or less patterns. And by definition, patterns are the easiest way to combat... because they are patterns. But as of now, we can't really make anything else for games like these.

Jesus christ people are hard on this game. It's an indie game. A very good indie game. It delivers a unique, empathetic look into the life of a person suffering from psychosis. It looks great, it sounds great, the animations are outstanding. It has some very clever moments (using binaural audio to locate your enemy) and some very terrifying moments (the trials). It's not perfect and it's a little short but for the price I think it delivers. It's highly original and the industry needs innovation right now.

It's a slight deviation from the mythology, but works well in this game and what it's trying to say. They using the accepted view of death (Hel is evil in Norse Mythology) and basically said, "No, it's not."

@@LecherousLizard pretty bad take from you. For one, don't be a pretentious douche. It's not "literally impossible to lose combat in this game", unless you're playing on easy. As far as her still hearing voices: no shit. She has a chronic condition. But through her journey she learns to cope with her loss and realize that she isn't "cursed" like her father made her believe. If you watched the feature about the making of the game then you'd understand they had a LOT of advisement from mental health professionals, and one of the things they mentioned is that people with psychosis sometimes do go through a transformation after an episode, where they come out relatively at peace.
Sidenote: her journey wasn't purely mental or metaphorical. In the developer diaries they say that she was fighting real vikings. She simply depicted them as hellish/demonic due to her condition.

There are two aspects of Senuas' personality: the one you play, which is the part that can't let go of Dilion, the part that buried the memory of her mother's death and the abuse suffered from her father. The other aspect is represented by Hela. It's the part that know about her mother's death, which is why she visually resembles her, and also the part that can let go of Dillion. So essentially, the player is playing the diseased part of her mind, the part that will fight endless, hopeless battles and kill herself that way. Throughout the game, that part of her mind is slowly dismantled with memories resurfacing one after another and in the end, the Hela part kills the other, allowing her to move on.

The game was fantastic, people saying its trash are probably just too dumb to understand the story
    *SPOILERS*
It's about Senua, a girl whose mother got killed by her father when she was little, and got locked away in the house until she forgot what actually happened. Her father kept telling her that she was cursed by the darkness and if she leaves the house she'd spread the darkness to other people (he probably did this so she wouldn't tell anyone that her father killed her own mother)
Then she met a man called Dillion and felt in love with him, because he accepted her even though she was already weird as fuck
Her pscyhosis gets even worse when she remembers how dillion got killed and tortured/blood eagle'd by northmen (you see this in a cinematic)
In the end she finds out that she is in fact not really cursed, but her father was a dickhead and he was the one causing her mental illness (aka the darkness)
she throws away dillions head and makes peace with her past in the end
    amazing 10/10 game

the symbolism of the last sequence is just so great!
after she loses the fight we see her laying on the ground shrouded in darkness, writhing in pain. the darkness represents her denial, the light represents the truth (dillion is dead, he is gone forever). we can see her slowly crawling towards the light, still writhing and moaning in pain, because accepting the truth hurts, yet, she keeps on going towards it, because staying in denial (in the darkness) will eventually consume her. consume in the sense that she either kills herself or will completely lose touch with reality.
she crawls right to the point where the darkness ends and the light begins and stops there, the light divides her, representing her inner conflict, she is not ready yet to accept reality so she sits down right at the border between truth and denial and starts bargaining and begging. hela in that sequence represents death, and the reality of loss.
we see senua comes to and from denial a few times during her monologue, but no matter what she says death just stares back in silence, it has no intention of harming her, it wants nothing really, it is just there, it exists as a fact and nothing can change that, there is no reasoning or negotiating with it. we see most of the scene from hela's perspective, because while we feel for senua, we know (or at least supposed to know by this point) that denying the truth will only bring her more pain, it will make her detach from reality completely. hela's perspective represents reality, and it is the first time we pan from senua's perspective to reality's perspective. we look at senua, we feel her pain, but death isnt something that can be changed, senua needs to accept that.
eventually senua says that without dillion she is nothing, she has no purpose in this world, she is completely alone. it is the first time senua ever reveals what losing dillion means, its the first time she acknowledges he is dead. she thinks that by acknowledging his death nothing matters anymore (you have no power over me), so death picks her up and stabs her, which metaphorically means that accepting dillions death is the same as getting stabbed to death, its a sharp realization of the truth and hurts beyond measure, it hurts so much that it feels like dying.
after dillions short monologue we cut to senuas "dead body" which represents her old self, that part of her has ended and we can now see "hela" walking towards dillions head and dropping it into the abyss. the camera moves from hela and and when it moves back we see that its senua, she has internalized hela. or more accurately, what hela stands for, she stands for death, loss and by extension grief. by internalizing hela, senua can finally let dillion go, physically and metaphorically, and start grieving over him and evetually heal and move on with her life (we have another story to tell).

I know for a lot of people this wouldn’t classify as a “horror” game, but for me it was terrifying. I can’t watch horror movies, I closed my eyes all the way through the first paranormal activity. I am Legend gave me nightmares as a teen, I don’t do scary. All this to say, I couldn’t stop playing. I was terrified the whole time but I had to finish it. The character was so real, I felt like I had to complete her mission. Like it was my mission. I don’t have any sort of mental health issues, not even anxiety. So the voices and the shadows completely terrified me. It was by far the scariest thing I’ve ever played/watched….. and yet again, I felt compelled to finish it. And I’m so glad I did. I cried so many times I can’t even count, the story is so intense and heartbreaking, while being somehow beautiful at the same time. I came on here to see if maybe there was an alternate ending to make sure I did the right thing, and just watching the cutscene again made me cry all over again. So one last time, never a game I would see myself playing in a million years, but so thrilled and thankful that I did.

So many " I think the game is about.." comments. Really? Did none of you look up this game before hand? Ninja Theory has been giving interviews about this game for months. Senua is schizophrenic, she's suffered trauma, stigmatization, and the loss of her only support system to keep her hold on reality. Ninja Theory went way beyond what most developers would to accurately portray psychosis. They not only had the help of multiple psychologists and psychiatrists but had a group of actual psychosis patients help them to understand and portray what psychosis is like for them. This whole game is supposed to be following her journey through her psychosis through her eyes, seeing and experiencing the world through her eyes. It's beautiful, terrifying and heartbreaking. It's not just to entertain, it's meant to make you think and get an understanding of what real psychosis patients experience everyday.

And Hellblade is not one of them: (although there is an awful amount of walking too) there are actual gameplay mechanics such as fighting and puzzle-solving. The game having a plot doesn't mean it's dull, poorly designed gameplay mechanics can't be judged.

I liked the game, felt cinematic, I felt connected to Senua... in a time before modern medicine and technology all she had was her father and mother. her mother also suffered from psychosis and they burned her alive, her father kept her locked away and isolated from people, there were rumors and whispers about her family and her "curse" her father believed in the gods and their plan, he raised Senua in his belief...
she saw her lovers corpse from the vikings blood eagle ritual because they wiped out her village when she came back from the woods. Before I mention anything more, all in all it was a breath of fresh air. it was heavily story driven, it's meant to build an atmosphere in which you can immerse yourself into Senua's psychosis, because not only was she mentally ill, she suffered extreme isolation and PTSD
If you are more interested in achievements, blowing shit up, being attacked every 5 seconds, you dont enjoy exploring lore, you hate roleplaying, or hate simply taking in visuals as the story unfolds... Dont bother

it's somehow strange yet.. assuring to always come back to these moments. they deliver despair, fear, overwhelming darkness, and then... acceptance. accepting what you are, what you lost, what can never be brought back, whatever is thrown upon you, accepting the dark and despair within you... you don't surrender in the end. in fact, you accept it all in the end. everything mentioned above. despair, frustration, fear and your darkness. I love how this fight ends with accepting your "nature", you live with what you are and whatever darkness lives within you. And still brings hope and joy in all that darkness.
    "so many qutoes" - Dillion
"Never forget what it's like to see the world like a child. (...)"
No medium nor "talk" was ever able to tell and assure me about all these things. For that, I appreciate and thank all the ones, who were involved in this "game". It was actually a journey. Somehow with someone else, but in the the end, it was a journey with you. And going through it all. All along. Never thought, it was possible to manifest it in that form, but it's incredible it did. For that, I am grateful.
"Be careful. Surrender. Let go. Don't die."
I come back to this as "reassurance" regularly. It's simply reproducable whenever I need it. Whenever I need to accept the dark.
    At least that's what I think 🤷🏻‍♂️

We will follow her as a friend and it will be our story to witness... I absolutely love this game. I like how at the beginning of the game the voices greeted us just like another voice saying "come join us". We were just one of the voices, sometimes telling her not to give up by helping her fight, dictating her moves throughout the battlr with the help of other voices as they warned us about enemies. They sometimes ridiculed Senua by saying "she can't solve the puzzle" or "she will die" and sometimes others believed in her by saying "she solved the puzzle before" or "she can do it" just like us behind the screen. The voices are hers, we control her and we also have our commentary, so we are Senua. I was so immersed in the story that I didn't want to believe the voices during the Hela fight. I kept saying no, get up, keep fighting! This was really one of the best stories I've ever experienced. The narrator was right after all, this was not a story about a hero fighting evil.

people shit on this game, but yea story driven. look at telltale and tell me that is any different? played it twice now and i have to say, the story is good, the combat feels good for what it is, and even tho the game is relatively short, its an amazing game. would play it again 9/10. Lot of people saying this game looks cheap and the mechanics are simple. A. The game looks incredible when playing it, especially on PC. B. Yes the mechanics are simple, but in the context of the game they are effective. It's an indie game, what do you want. If you have genuine criticisms of the game, please voice them. But if you're hating on it before playing it or because it looks different, please shut up, because you are the reason countless devs are afraid to take risks.

Just because they are indie doesnt mean they dont have the same standarsd, whole point of this project was to create a AAA game at a indie game budget.

@@LecherousLizard maybe it’s just me but I do a bit of research before purchasing a game. This game was meant to be utilized as an insight to mental illness. To give the world an idea of what some people have to live with on a daily basis. It was never meant to be focused primarily on combat, collectibles, etc. the developer clearly stated he intentionally did not wanna go overkill on that because it would take away from the story. That’s what this game is. A story. Which people would know if they did more than look at the cover and decide, ugh I’ll buy it. Do your research.

I’m like an average player when it comes to multiplayer games. And the combat in this game was hard. I did have it on Auto difficulty, so I guess that kinda made it hard to predict.
The game was such a great experience. The story was well worth it. The depiction of psychosis was interesting. And I really didn’t think the mechanics were bad, they were actually rather fluid.
Although there were points where you’d be clueless and die, which was kinda annoying as the thingy keeps growing on your hand.
Probably not a game for everyone, but I do wish they made more of such experience. Let those who enjoy such games enjoy them, the rest get your kinda games anyway.

      Sleep Party God
I personally loved this game, and it really opened up my mind. I've often seen portrayals of mental illnesses like psychosis in movies and in tv, but they almost always have the characters act as if these people are completely dangerous or lack empathy. It's refreshing to take part in an interactive story that lets you see and even feel what it's like to suffer from this mental illness and the social stigma surrounding it. I was really invested in Senua, and was even afraid that she would be consumed by her own darkness and die at the end. I was super relieved once we learn that she didn't die, and that she had actually overcome the darkness that was crowding her mind. I don't think there's a better way this story could have ended. I just wish everyone else could see past the fact that this is a game, and realize that it is much, much deeper than just something to play when you're bored. I'm so glad I bought a ps4 and was able to experience this game for myself without any spoilers.

I've never been extremely into games, although I go through periods where I will play a lot. I was addicted to games as a child, however, and this game made me stare in awe at my television just like when I was young. I would play for an hour or so after work, all the lights out, headphones on and I was completely enthralled. I couldn't get enough of Senua's story. The Last of Us was the most powerful game I'd played until this, and this was much more moving. I've suffered from debilitating anxiety since my father passed away, nine years ago. Anxiety and depression were my own darkness and Senua's story has given me strength I hadn't had before. I cannot recommend this game enough. I cannot stop thinking about it. It's truly a masterpiece to me.

Oh my god, it had me in tears for a half hour, and that’s saying something because crying over cinema and games is one ofthose things I just don’t do. It was so well done, and it really made me think, which helped me see how well crafted everything is. I think a lot of people hate on it because they don’t understand what happened, the story. It’s not straightforward, but it’s not supposed to be. She has severe psychosis, she doesn’t think like anyone else. To truly understand it, you have to think through the whole game, every comment and scene, have to think like her. A game that forces you to do that, that has everyhting tie in... mm. *snaps fingers* Perfection. A wonderfully crafted work of art that alternately scared the crap out of me and moved me to tears. If you are looking for a moving, story and atmosphere-driven game that makes you think, look no further. Totally aorth the money.

At one point, I had to put down the controller and breath due to how tense it was. The voices constantly speaking to you, senua seeing the darkness that clouds her mind. It felt real and authentic. However it sends a message, thats it's not easy going through something similar to what senua experienced.
In sum, this game is crafted to perfection and people who deny it being "good". Are people who hate to see a message. This game is one of my top favorites. Thank you devs....thank you
