An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.
A sword is a bladed weapon used for cutting and thrusting the enemies. The precise definition of the term varies with the historical epoch or the geographical region under consideration. A sword in the most narrow sense consists of a straight blade with two edges and a hilt, but depending on context, the term is also often used to refer to bladed weapons with a single edge.
Maces are blunt weapons, a club-like that uses a heavy head on the end of a handle to smash enemies with powerful and devastating blows. A mace typically is made of a strong, heavy, wooden or metal shaft, reinforced with metal, with a head made of stone, copper, bronze, iron, or steel.
They sometimes added flanges or knobs to the head of a military mace to allow greater penetration of plate armour. Maces were developed during the Paleolithic from the simple club, by adding sharp spikes of flint or obsidian. During the Middle Ages armour made of metal such as mail protected against the blows of edged weapons. Metal maces and war hammers though proved able to inflict damage on metal armoured knights, as the force of a blow from a mace is great enough to cause damage without penetrating the armour. Iron was often the main choice to build this kind of weapons but copper and bronze were also used, especially in iron-deficient areas.

Thanks for the correction mate. I guess it comes down to how we define what a battlefield weapon is. I don’t really consider the longsword a battlefield weapon either, even though it was used on the battlefield, because that is not it’s sole purpose or use, whereas a poleaxe is far more designed for the battlefield. I guess I should stick with, not a “primary” battlefield weapon to be clearer ^_^
LOVED the video, especially since you touched on several things I skipped, and elaborated farther on others, all depending on what we’re more studied in. I noticed you skipped the archery decapitation part but were also able to share more information on the Japanese elements. Just makes both our videos complement each other even more.

To be fair, from the period pictures I've seen, longswords with shields appear to be mixed into spear lines; whether it's to protect the spear bearers, or so officers could move through the line more easily, isn't so clear.

Hey Shad! Yes I didnt talk about the archery part because you did extensively and I didnt feel I could really add anything to It also because I'm not an Archer like you or Matt Easton. Anyhow I'm glad you liked my video and Great job on yours! As for the Battlefield weapon I consider a Battlefield weapon a weapon that was used on a Battlefield, since all Samurai during the time the katana was in use carried them on the field I would consider It as such, but I do see your point of view too.

    Very good debunking video Metatron!
I wanted to add that blade grabbing as an option happens quite a lot during a fight. The requirements is only grabbing the opponent's sword while it stops (which requires good timing), if the sword doesn't move it is possible to hold it bare handed, of course a pair of "simple" leather gloves is recomended, it'sfar more than enough to decrease the chance of being slashed by a twitch, a twist or a pull (which are three common ways of trying to free the sword by a grab).
Anyway Fiore dei Liberi tells us that while duelling (and most probably also while traveling and as a Fashion tool) people was wearing "Guanti di Camussa" chamuis leather gloves, to protect the hands. Armor doesn't increase the safety in this specific act, but increases the chance of stopping the sword (you can stop it whit almost all your body) and so increases the number of chances to actually grab the sword.

I'm a huge Assassins Creed Fan however even I know not everything they do is historically accurate, the issue is when I play something like Assassins Creed Valhalla I take most things with a pinch of salt, I look up the actual history and drown myself in historically accurate videos/books/audiobooks/even music e.t.c. that's why I believe that the tour modes as well that Assassins Creed do are a way of them going, hey we know we haven't been historically accurate of course with the combat (like origins/valhalla (let's not go there with Odyssey that one still hurts.) shields/weapons/armour.) but they at least give us a historical section to the game where we learn the full history which is awesome. I really find your videos brilliant because I know you understand the meaning of what Assassins Creed (and many TV shows/Movies) are trying to do first and foremost Entertain, I came across someone who would have wanted the for honor combat in this game and I just knew it wouldn't have worked, this game is an Assassins Creed RPG first and foremost and not a reality, I honestly will say however there are moments where history is depicted really well in this game and where the Assassins Creed story comes in. I would however love to see Assassins Creed to revisit Rome in 41CE-69CE (or AD) with the lore of assassins actually stating an assassin murdered Caligula, then you could then follow the assassinations of Claudias/Galba and Vitellius. from 54-69CE(AD) giving us the densely populated city and maybe allowing us to see more Parkour in the games again and maybe hinting to more of the fiction and fact melding together to tell us a sort of historically accurate depiction. I hope we see more in the way of Assassins Creed come back. :) I love when people create fictional stories in historical periods because I know they're not trying to be 100% with everything. :) I will say one thing the knights throughout the world are awful, the fact that you can't even penetrate their defence with a good strike when they're stunned there is a lack of understanding of what a weapon can do in that situation and this is where I dislike the game immensely, any defence you have she can break through even when she's on the floor she's more powerful and can get up, it's ridiculous and difficult where it shouldn't be also she for some reason is a woman and has the strength of bear.

Great video! I'm not super knowledgeable on history, but I do have experience in sport (which isn't completely historically accurate either, but things still apply). Shields pack a lot of force! Even in full armor in a fight, wow when someone starts slamming you with their shield sometimes... I would argue the shield is more important in melee fights than the weapon itself really, it just plain packs more of a punch and force. I also have a teammate that uses dual axes... it's so annoying... in the best way for him. You can hook pieces of armor and weapons and completely disable a person, sometimes for what feels like a lot longer than "temporary". Just to add too, the largest dents in my armor and helmet are from blows from a 2 handed axe.

As a HEMA fighter for 32+ years (SCA version) I can tell you that striking with two weapons simultaneously is a common tactic for fighting Florentine (yes the Italians are credited with fighting with two weapons at a time). Plus using two axes allows to strike over shields to a degree (about a 6" reach advantage). I have to agree that using two shields at one time is probably not a primary tactic by Norsemen but could be done if no other weapon was at hand because they were bulky and heavy to use, but could be used to effect.

I might not be an expert but here is my thoughts. Ok, dual wielding existed in fancy eastern martial arts. But if it was actually effective, it would have been more widely used. Dual wielding is rediculous since you loose the advantage of your one handed weapon, which is to be able to carry a shield, for pratically 0 benefits. You can no longer protect yourself against arrows and it will be hard to close the gap between you and a polearm or spear. Also, when with duel wielding is duels in martial arts, the opponent is always strangely also duel wielding. You can bet if the opponent had a spear or a shield with another weapon, the duel wielding guy would get destroy. So yeah, if dual wielding was in any way a decent way to fight, people would have done it.
I would like people to correct me if my analysis is incorrect.

@@PacMonster0 I didn't say it made your one handed weapon worse. I just said I said you don't gain as much from that second weapon compared to what you gain from a shield or using a long weapon. You could even put two swords on your belt if you are that scared of losing it while still carrying a shield. Dual wielding martial exists, but Tai Chi also exists since centuries ago and it's a completly bad way to fight. If it was good, MMA fighters would use it since they can fight how they like. In the same way, dual wielding exists, but it's never used on the battlefield where all weapons are allowed because it actually kind of sucks.

If I shoot a guy with an M16 with my musket and win the firefight, that does not change the fact that this musket is garbage. Dual wielding was more likely a way to show off how cool you were and intimidate the opponent kind of like how there were naked warriors in history.

You may say "but one-handed weapon and shield is better in a duel" but you forgot that somebody has to carry that shield around the town. Having a parrying dagger is much more convenient. And is probably more useful (at least offensively) than a small buckler.

Pretty much the slowly maneuvering into combat distance thing applies all the way to the late 19th century, when the capacity to simply destroy a large fraction of the enemy with bolt actions, semi-autos and machineguns meant fighting exposed in formation often became more liability than asset. Of course, move away from the front line and things instantly revert to formations again. Though not as tight ones.

In video games, even though actual melee tactics are rarely applicable (only in the games that specifically focus on such) the same actually does apply since their systems usually tries to adapt the ideas. Thus, the idea of weapon threat zones as a defense becomes area denial, and judging by how beloved most game weapons in multiplayer games that give you this advantage are, most people understand the appeal of using an offensive tool to deny your enemy freedom when choosing how to engage.
What I'd really love to see more of in games are parrying daggers, they were such a big thing so why are they now entirely forgotten in the digital media?

Just want to correct, that knight at the end is a Teutonic Knight not a member of the Knights of St. John more often known as the Knights hospitaller. The most noticable way to identify this is the cross design used as the cross is not a "Maltese" cross. Though the Teutonic knights are descended from the Hospitallers, they are a separate and more militaristic order.

The bare minimum, if you are talking about Templars, is to know how they looked.

Metatron, regarding the whole sword being used defensively, I think a lot would be cleared up for MatPat if we all remember the etymology of the word "Defense."
Sword-fighting in the historical manuals are always called fencing, which is rather curious.
It's derived from the latinate, "defence", while the Romance term for the same word was "scherma" or "escrima" which meant "to shield, cover, or defend."
Capo Ferro in his manual reaffirms this this etymology.
"The aim of fencing is the defense of self, from whence it derives its name; because “to fence” does not mean other than defending oneself, hence it is that 'protection' and 'defense' are words of the same meaning; whence one recognizes the value and the excellence of this discipline is such that everyone should give as much care thereunto, as they love their own life, and the security of their native land, being obligated to spend that lovingly and valorously in the service thereof.
Thence it is also seen that defense is the principal action in fencing, and that no one must proceed to offense, if not by way of legitimate defense."
    --Ridolfo Capo Ferro, Gran Simulacro dell'Arte e dell'Uso della Scherma, c. 1610.
Philippo di Vadi echoed a much similar sentiment in his manuscript some 200 years before Capo Ferro.
"If you wish to truly know
If fencing is an art or science
    Hark my words, I say.
    Ponder this, my statement:
It is a true science and not an art
And Geometry, which divides and separates,
    By infinite numbers and measures
And fills her papers with science,
Shows this with its pithy eloquence.
The sword is placed in her care,
So measure blows and steps together
    So Science keeps you safe.
    From Geometry fencing is born,
    And under her it has no end;
And both of them are infinite."
--Philippo di Vadi, De Arte Gladiatoria Dimicandi, c. 1482-1487.
And if we want to get even older, we have MS I.33, or the Walpurgis Fechtbuch, that echoes a similar sentiment.
"Note that the art of fencing is described as follows: Fencing is the ordering of various strikes, and it is divided into seven parts as here."
    --MS I.33, c. 1320's.
After that definition of fencing, the priest who wrote the manuscript then goes into the various guard positions, afterwards.
"Seven guards there are, under the arm the first
On the right shoulder the second, the third on the left
To the head give the fourth, to the right side the fifth
To the breast give the sixth, and as the final one have langort."
    --MS I.33, c. 1320's.
So after defining what fencing is, which according to the priest that wrote this manuscript, fencing is the ordering of various strikes divided into seven parts, and immediately afterwards, he defines the seven divisions, which are called wards, or GUARD positions.
So we can see a clear etymology that "fencing" literally means using a sword to protect yourself, and the art of scherma, fencing, or escrima is how to use the sword in that endeavor of protecting yourself.
Even this is echoed in Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings, for goodness sake!
"The true Way of sword fencing is the craft of defeating the enemy in a fight, and nothing other than this."
--Miyamoto Musashi, Book of Five Rings, c. 1643.
Miyamoto Musashi cuts through to the heart of the matter and defines fencing as defeating the enemy in a fight with a sword.
Not only that, clear etymology of the word "fencing" and "defense" show that the original meaning of the word WAS USING A SWORD TO PROTECT YOURSELF.
MatPat needs to slow down, and think things through and ask questions from more knowledgeable people. There's clear history of where the word defense comes from, and fencing back then was understood as protecting yourself with a sword.
