Let me tell you : this is by far the BEST latin tutorial on you tube ! Subscribed immediately. And the great thing is that we can apply the same concept forcany chord progression. The way you break the difficulty of the pattern using exercises rising slowly in difficulty is a great idea instead of just showing the pattern at a slow tempo. I loved the fact that you explained how it is built and so we can apply the same concept to create other patterns. Thank u so much , you are a wonderful teacher ( from a math teacher!!!) . Greetings from France, Philippe

I love how you break things down into smal components. The breaking down of the rythm with counting 1and makes it managable for me. I learnt to play the piano classical style so this is a bit overwhelming, but I feel that I can manage it with your great instruction.

      Dear Tamara,
You are a fine person. Your English is awful. You managed to make 9 mistakes in about 51 words. For example, "small" has two LL's. Don't get mad. Get correction software. Please appreciate that corrections are never insults. Here is your missive written correctly.
I love how you break things down into chunks. Assigning numbers to the rhythm made the rhythm manageable. I studied Classical Piano. Latin Piano is a bit daunting. I feel I can muddle through thanks to your drills.

Excellent tutorial. One can learn to improvise in this style by practicing these exercises and then changing small things. Changing on small thing, then two in the same phrase keeping the rhythm moving. Then more. Like the early exercise where you play the octave then the third, then moving the thirds around while keeping the octave playing the same pattern for A minor. Moving the pattern to G major ,playing the G octave and moving the thirds around so it sounds good. Just experimenting with these patterns makes more music. So thank you! These are great tutorials!!!

  • @wttw4942

Very good exercise to learn the basic piano "montuno" of salsa. Thank you very much for showing it. Although I understand that the bass line in this particular exercise could only be for harmonic reference of the roots of the chords. Usually and frequently when one plays the "montuneo", or the "guajeo" of salsa on the piano, the bass line is omitted by the left hand. In reality the voices of the chords are distributed between the two hands and the rhythmic movement is parallel in both hands, similar to the rythmic patern that he is using on his right hand. In this way the "arpeggio" is harmonized with the chordal intervals being distributed between the two hands. It's kind of a harmonized arpeggio. Which produces a richer and more interesting harmony. And if you use open chordal voicing, like the ones used in jazz music, it really becomes even more interesting and beautiful. The main idea is to ommit the bas line on the left and play the arpeggio with both hands at one octave of separation as much as possible withing the song structure. Cheers!

Nicely laid out, with all exercises building on each other! I've heard this chord progression is called "The Andalusian Cadence" (used in Flamenco guitar music). I use the same chords in my book "Amazing Phrasing - Keyboard" Salsa/Afro Cuban Idea #45 (syncopated roots every other measure just to introduce an offbeat concept). Where it gets tricky if you're not used to Latin rhythms is playing that Tumbao in the Left Hand (Exercise 7) where the root comes in on beat 4 of the next chord (It's easier to play arpeggiated chords in Latin rhythms with a bass player covering that lower part, much more challenging all by oneself as a solo pianist!) Thanks for your presentation, my 2023 goal will be to get comfortable with ex. 7 and beyond, like your Blue Bossa Salsa style video!
