I sort of get what you mean about the vents having no mesh, but on the other hand there is a big hole at the bottom of the fly for stuff to get under anyway. I can see the argument for having 'em meshed (ain't that much weight) and I can see the argument for having 'em not (it's extra weight).
If the vents had mesh, you wouldn't be able to close them from the inside if needed, and as you rightly point out, it's open at the bottom with a sealed mesh inner anyway.
I’ve used 1p in mesh to hike kungsleden last August/September and the newer solid for the TGO challenge this May. I find the solid a bit more claustrophobic than the mesh. It’s a great tent for multi day hikes. It’s light, easy to set up with good vestibule space allowing a ‘wet/dry’ or ‘clean/muddy’ separation. I use trekking poles. I’m not so flexible so the headroom gives me space to wriggle without cramping at the end of a long day. Previously I had a Nordisk Telemark 2 and a couple of different pyramids. I could do with a 1.5 inner if the poles slanted out a bit (but that possibly achievable now with a change to the bungee cord on the inner) to accommodate my dog while keeping the smaller footprint. I found the 2p footprint to be significant. I really like the tent when lying down. I found the Telemark and the pyramids too close to my face. The Xmid isn’t perfect but it’s great for my purposes and light at a kilo with footprint. I’ve used it in October on the Affric/Kintail Way so good enough for 3+ seasons in Scotland and -2c in Sweden (provided you’re insulated from the ground)
@@DaleyOutdoors the only think I might like is a ‘winged’ footprint that would give a ground cover on the short side of 1 or more vestibules (but that would add a little weight - not that I should worry when I’m 90kg about a few more grammes)

If you're after the XMid 1P you can save even more by ordering the Inner and Fly separately if both in stock. The UK / Canada trade agreement means you won't pay VAT or import fees if the value of each order is not exceeding £135.00. Yes you'll pay 2 x £15.00 postage but I've done this for the 1P Solid and paid in total £239.00 inc postage and no fees or VAT
@daleyoutdoors I emailed them when I seen they were out of stock for an ETA on the solid inner and they replied stating they still had a small reserve stock that they keep for warranty issues etc and offered to sell me one so snapped it up straight away. Very impressed with their customer service 👍
Well done Daley...this is the 1st X-mid review I've seen...I liked the tent until you mentioned the price! It's probably worth it, I just don't camp that much ☺️ 👍
I have wanted one for about a year now. So I have decided to stay with the lanshan for now!!!!.... or untill I can justify it to the family ( and myself). Take care out there.
The bug net on the vent isn't an issue at all because its a double skin tent and where i go the bugs are not stupid enough to think that they cannot get in underneath the flysheet, i was going to mention that on APs video too but never got around to it because i just though he might have been gargling the whiskey with him being a jock 🤔🤣
@@GrizzlyGaz I dont cook as such ever Gaz , i only boil water because i dont like the thought of getting oil splashes and food stink on my gear. How come ?
@@Olan... The reason I ask is when there's no mesh high up in the vents (where midges seem to congregate) they make their way into the tent. Then when you open the inner to boil water in the vestibule they like to fly inside the inner. This means you'll have a few flies/midges/mozzies inside your inner tent with you all night sucking you dry. I've had this multiple times. None of the US / Canadian tents seem to have the bug mesh in the vents but all UK tents do. It's needed to keep the midges out as they can spoil your camping trip pretty fast. I've got tents with and without mesh in the vents and always had more bugs inside the fly sheet when no bug mesh in the vents.
@@GrizzlyGaz I have this tent, I did think about what you have just mentioned, just get a pack of citronella candles from Amazon and put one/two in the vestibule next to your stove, they don't come near you then. I saw this on a YT video, it works a treat.
There's so much hiking and camping gear on my list from the States & and Canada, but I refuse to be ripped off with all the taxes & duties they add. I prefer the sage on my xmid 2 solid. Yeah, i changed the elastic for the poles and also modded the inner door ties and added shock cord to the bottom. Cheers for the import information. It begs the question - why is it being taken in the first place. Probably hasn't been passed on down the line yet, or has but they're banking on nobody knowing or being bothered with the reclaim hassle
Just clerical error. You're relying on a human to know the most recent trade agreements across all countries and products. I've seen posts from people who didn't get charged.
Got stung with parcel force on that scam (£90) something!! Plus import tax, duty. Total £320, deplorable lot, but in fairness, alright trekking pole tent, super hyped, but Dans your man, it would have been realistic at £230, but was after it for quite a bit and the chance came along.
I'm sure our Brit brethren will be happy for this info! On mesh at the vents: It wouldn't make a difference and would make things worse. The vent doesn't open up into the inner, which is mesh anyway. If you put mesh on the vents it'd make it impossible to close them from inside the tent if needed. As the vents are on the fly, and the fly isn't attached to the bathtub but sits over it with a gap at the bottom, the bugs would still be able to crawl in but that still doesn't matter because the inner mesh tent is sealed. ;) You Brits are obsessed with adding guys to everything; in all but the most extreme conditions you don't need more than 6 pegs. I recommend taking the peak guys and tying a taut line hitch into them, then attaching them to the nearest peg (the short part of the door). This makes the ridgeline sturdier yet, and keeps the peak guy lines from brushing the fly in the breeze which will create wear over time and make noise.

I do love my xmid 1p, it is a fantastic tent but certainly more geared for US style camping in more sheltered woodland areas (Appalachian Trail, etc). For the money over here in the USA it's a fantastic deal. I personally find it more than big enough with the vestibules, but again in windy rainy UK weather I can see how stuff could get wet if you don't cinch the rain fly down close enough to the ground. My biggest complaint is the use of magnets to hold back the fly -yes they are cool but I'd imagine in windy weather they'd be a right pain, especially if you are cooking in the vestibule. I'd much rather have the tried and trusted loop and toggle. I'd also assume that given enough uses the clashing of the magnets could potentially wear the material, but I'm not sure that's a true practical concern. Sometimes the older less cool ways of doing things are better....
