Another technique that’s easier to do on yourself is to twist a section of hair between your fingers, and then trim off the split ends that pop out. I like to pull approximately 1 inch section to the front, and this technique with the help of a mirror.

I spend up to 8 hours on my long hair swctioning it into 12 parts and spending nearly an hour twisting it wnd looking at rhe ends in sunlight to destroy only the split ones. I neglected doing it for 4 months and my beautiful hair tangled in so many places that its nearly destriyed now. Dusting properly is the only thing that keeps my fine hair long and prevents me from losing more.

"Don't try this at home" is simply meant as a disclaimer; not a challenge or insult. It is necessary sometimes in case a nonsensical person does it, hurts themselves, and thinks they are going to get a payday out of it by suing the creator of the video.
The purpose is to educate you; whether you try it yourself or ask your stylist to do it. The word "dusting" alone is important because it indicates you don't want 3 INCHES cut off. As a curly girl, it is my new favorite word to use with stylists and I appreciate that there is more awareness about the breakdown in communication between stylists and customers. 💜 Curly girls are out here trying the unicorn cut and side eying strangers with scissors because of this misunderstanding and it's created a lot of tragic at-home haircuts.

Ah! I totally need to do this on my daughter. She’s biracial with softer hair, and I’ve been staring at those odd shorts split ends of hers since she has the layers in the butterfly cut.
Now I know what to do to fix them. 😂 Wish me luck, cause those split ends have been frizz central (compared to the rest of her hair… just having one frizzy patch was weird looking).
_Update:_ used the technique shown in this video on my daughter’s hair. It worked out well! I then went ahead and trimmed and relayered it, since her hair wasn’t layered properly a few months ago (that was my bad 😅), and it grows at different rates on different parts of her head.
It looks great now. She’s got great layers for her curly 3a/3b hair, kind of in the style of the butterfly cut (but not with the dramatic bangs, cause she’s 5 and hates hair in her face lol).
Her curls should now pop and be super voluminous instead of weighed down and A-shaped.

I was right with you because my son is biracial too--until you said your daughter was 5! She has a major haircut already at 5 years old?? Aside from trimming, you should just let her hair be, that might be why its damaged-you're trying to maintain a major haircut on a 5 year old. I don't even know what a butterfly cut is! My son is 18, with hair to his waist! Now *he* has major, thick beautiful biracial hair! He needs this! I have seen this done on African American hair, can't wait to try it on my son!
