Others worship or regard him as a soldier only. But Char is vicious enough to let himself forget about it to kill anyone and never feel for a second in the following 14 years till his own death. That is what the director understand as an arrogant hero of the volatile war times.

Murdering Garma pulls him back a bit. In the end, he did not annihilate the entire Zabi family and support the orphan Mineva till his exile from Axis. I do think he moved on.

If it were not for the superior manoeuvrability of Zeon's newly developed MS, the Zaku and Zaku II which were able to carry fire power that rivalled and even surpassed that of space cruisers, the Zeon wouldn't have stalemated the federation forces for months, never mind pulling ahead in terms of military superiority(as their RnD department kept building more specialized MS) but would have been annihilated within the same month it's opposition started. Char alone sank 5/60 space cruisers of the Earth federation in this battle, with the support fire of his subordinate suites, it was probably over 10 that his team sank in that battle. I suspect the numbers will shift with this new retelling as it is obvious he engages the enemy much sooner on his own than he did in the clip where he did so with cover fire from his troops.
The OVAs said that the colony drop and the resulting environmental damages caused half the Earth´s population to perish. I think the colonies got off lightly in comparison, unless there was some sort of mass exodus from Earth to the colonies?
I don't know story in this anime, but if any Space Age state will kill billions of citizens from other state it will be total war and both sides will get wiped out. Even now if World War will start only simplest life forms will survive, and destroying planets becomes easier each year. Breaking isn't building, as they say.
