Mother struggles to find affordable living as cost of rent increases across Metro Detroit

- As people try to make ends meet, the rising cost of rent is a constant struggle. Right now, the average cost of rent across Metro Detroit is $1,176 will get you a little less than 800 square feet. In Warren, you’re paying $950 a month. The cost of rent is higher in Southfield as it will cost you $1,200, and Westland is right in the middle at $1,000.
I can't express how much this pisses me off. I fled the Pacific Northwest and came home 5 years ago to escape the insane increase in cost of housing that was going on there. In my 40s making over $20 an hour. I still had to have multiple roommates. The fact that people are suggesting roommates as a solution doesn't do anything to cool my anger. The amount of chaos and lack of stability that living with strangers brings into your life can be damaging and life-changing. Something has got to break, those of us who work ourselves to the bone cannot be squeezed any harder than we already are. Now we're being told lower your standards and expectations, when the opportunities afforded to us are already significantly less than that of previous generations. 🤬
I completely understand your anger, but everything goes in cycles and unfortunately we're at the bottom of the cycle for Our Generation
I am blessed I pay 300 for an apt including al heat water and sewage I just pay electric and trash . But I had a hard come up I'm a trauma survivor and I completed a lot spiritually worked hard was gonna end up living in my car till I found this place which I've had a long time . So people say I'm lucky no Christ helped me
Believe me when I tell u NEVER get roommates that is not the answer believe me and trust me on this . If u get roommates u will need to get a storage unit for ure stuff and that's hundreds of dollars a month so trust me don't do it
I pray to Christ the evil Global elite will pay for this tragedy
Roommates not the answer now I know families who have merged together in one home and combined incomes to make it is what Mexicans and people in Greece do but only do this with family
Everyone needs their own bathroom , kitchen and somewhere to lock the door and feel safe and regroup from the seriousness of the Fallen World . Pray u will find help trust me on this

I live in Newport news, VA just about all apartments have gone up in rent prices, even in the not so good areas. We have faithfully paid during the pandemic and no breaks. Our rent has almost gone but by $200 in 3 years. The last two apartments I stayed in had consistent rent when I stayed. I can understand the price going up a little because all prices have gone up. But, I really think some places are using the pandemic as an excuse to raise prices. The really crazy thing is one of my old apartments has only increased by $80 in 8 years, even with the pandemic. Which is not bad. We increased by almost $200 in 3 years. These are not new apartments. In Virginia they don't have a cap on how much they can charge their renters I looked it up.

Homes 🏡 for a $1.00 wasn't that many in the first place the houses was shacks you would need too remodel the house still alot of money.
@@Facebook-sb3eo Yea of course we knew the caveat was the house was in poor condition and back taxes were almost always a issue, but people were actually still able to take advantage of that compared to know where they don't stand a chance just finding a rental.
@@soutinefan Those $1 houses were absolutely a practical AND realistic option for people of limited means, and the smart/responsible ones took advantage. When folks have little to nothing then they are in no position to complain about "slum neighborhoods" or how pretty the paint color is unless they have some type of government assistance/Section 8... The only homes that need $100k or even $50k worth of renovations are ones that are worth half a million or better when finished, or the ones that people put overly "expensive" finishes/details in, or they're tear-downs that never should have been invested in, OR homes that you're getting royally ripped off on labor cost... "Modest" 2-bed ranch homes with basements or 3-bed bungalows with basements are PLENTIFUL in the city will not take much investment to be habitable unless it's fire damaged which I would automatically stay away from anyway... You have to know how to hire the right contractors and/or resort to UA-cam if you have little to no DIY skills. Potentially being burglarized is a part of life no matter where you live, most poor people know how to protect themselves by using window bars, iron gates, and modern camera systems which are no longer an expensive novelty, or just paint/sanitize one room in the house FIRST so you can live in it (grind) while you finish the rest of the house without it being vacant - You certainly have to know when your way of thinking is "entitled" and yours definitely sounds like it.

By 2019, I was paying nearly $2200.00. I was retired with a pretty good pension and Social Security. Started my venture to leave NYC and began looking elsewhere. Traveling out to Nevada to see Vegas, The Grand Canyon and the Hoover Dam, I discovered a Townhome Condo subdivision under construction in North Las Vegas. Put my application in for a Townhome. Returned to Brooklyn and went through the process online while my Townhome was being built. My veteran's status allowed no down payment and the realtor paid the $20,000 closing costs. Food, gas, daycare etc. And I do agree that home ownership is the way to go if you can do it BUT 100k to buy a home in a undesirable neighborhood is ridiculous. It's easy for someone who makes a liveable wage to tell someone what they should and shouldn't do when you're only getting a glimpse of what the person is facing. I know the struggle all too well. Wishing this young lady and her son the best
@@cbow5582 well I wasnt implying that Detroit was still cheap. Just that the living costs dont match the lack of opportunities. My city Houston definitely isnt as affordable, but we still have a lot of opportunities. Hence why folks keep moving down here.
@@Shazzyhtown My comment wasn't directed towards you but there are opportunities here. Jobs are hiring like crazy here but I can understand doing a move if Detroit, along with other places, aren't a good fit for you anymore. So I get it.
@@cbow5582 ahh srry about that!!!
Kangz let’s see which one of the “ good high value ones” who’s been “building & protecting” is going to help this woman & her son..& which ones are going to let their degeneracy & lack of empathy show & say how this is not your problem, it’s her fault & she’s on her own... guarantee someone else who is competent, reliable & who has built something has already contacted the station with a rental offer to help this woman
@Trust Nobody snow crab king 😂😂😂😂
@Trust Nobody Because whoever this person is knows far too well than to get sucked into that meat & wallet grinder. We men should build for ourselves today because we ain't got no legal guarantees on an ROI on what we put on some woman.
@Trust Nobody Good brother, they live in an absolutely liberated state with thousands of corporate & state aid, they don't need our help in any way & we need to keep or resources locked out from them at all costs & start readying to file some massive lawsuits against any of these government agencies who may try to force it form us because bachelor tax has been real in history.
@@sorongana5346 Are you gay? Aren't most incels gay? Maybe that's why yall hate women. Get it together brother
There are no kangz...kanga.... in my community there are no men anymore. Women have to do it all alone.
I definitely moved away may 2023 I pay 575 for a two bedroom.I couldn't find anything or afford anything and it's like the lottery to get something affordable..
The city has been wanting this gentrification process to happen for a while now and now it's in full swing
The federal government has failed the states by not providing appropriate funding for citizens, they give away our tax money to various places across the world. This concept works when our economy is doing well but we suffer greatly dong this during hard times.
The banks. Remember Obama's giveaway during the great recession? It all went to the banks who then foreclosed on mortgages.
Freedom means being independent.
It's not even funding.. they can set limits on rent cap etc..
Your precious fed govt already screwed landlords enough. You got a free ride for a couple years and you’re still complaining? Buy your own house, while you’re at it, let a couple families move in and not pay while you foot every bill to own said property. Or just work for free for two years, same thing. Would you like it?

This local mom...who raising a son and there is no sight of a husband in sight..why do black women choose to ve single mothers?
It isn't no choice !!!!! There's no black men to marry there in prison, died, or don't make enough money to marry so your clock ticking out waiting on that fantasy is a joke .

Why is no one questioning why this is happening all over.. they did this down here in Atlanta.. these landlords just decided to just sky rocket the rent… and they want you to make 3 times the rent… why is this not address overall… something funny is going on….
The tenants just decided to just skyrocket the rent payments, so the landlords can ask for more and get it. Too much money was printed and in circulation now.
I 🙏🏾 she find something it’s definitely hard out here , and suggesting roommates is not realistic ! Especially when you have children I’m so sick of folk acting like that is the solution .
