  • Many private tenants are already having to spend more than a third of their income on rent - and tomorrow the Mayor of London is holding a crisis meeting warning that thousands of people could be left unable to pay.

    The issue is that either the renter or the owner must in some way pay insurance and property taxes if they want a "permanent roof" with utilities like electricity, gas and water. Because of this, many people-at least in California, where I currently reside-are living in tents. No taxes, rent, mortgages, or insurance. The number of people who tell me they live in their car that I meet amazes me. Its crazy out here!

      It’s getting wild by the day. The prices of homes are quite ridiculous and Mortgage prices has been skyrocketing on a roll(currently over 7%). Sometimes i wonder if to just invest my spare cash into the stock market and wait for a housing crash or just go ahead to buy a home anyways.

      I get such worries too. I'm 50 and retiring early. Already worried of the future and where its headed, especially in terms of financies and how to get by. I'm also considering making my first investment in the stock market, but how can I do so given that the market has been in a mess for the majority of the year?

      You're not doing anything wrong; the problem is that you don't have the knowledge needed to succeed in a challenging market. Only highly qualified professionals who had to experience the 2008 financial crisis could hope to earn a high salary in these challenging conditions.

    In The Netherlands there are now rules so that homes in the more "affordable" segment can not be used as an investment. So for example in Amsterdam, when you buy a home under 500k you must live there yourself for at least the first 4 years. This is at least an attempt to prevent investors from simply buying up everything and renting it out. Also the stamp duty is much lower when you buy to live rather than buy to invest. In The Netherlands the practice of buying as an investment is called "milking homes" and is really generally frowned upon, although not illegal, so this and other experiments in law are undertaken to make this more difficult to help keep things relatively affordable.

      Netherlands is a degenerative country: there is no need to hate landlords/investors. These policies are contributing to a massive housing shortage in the Netherlands, so Dutch people should be careful what they wish for. Don't discourage investors, then complain there's nothing to rent!

    wow...i mean wow....In 1995 I paid no more than £35 a week as a student, (Lager was 70p a pint,) Had a full grant at uni, moved to a big city , got a job , claimed Housing benefit when I lost it aged 24, , lived in a nice area for £40 per week working part time afterwards, now I own a business that`s been going 17 years. I grew up on benefits and in council housing. None of this possible now. There`s no way that I could be where I am now - if I was a student now. I really feel for the young people in this video. This is shite. This is no future.

    Great video! For 2023, it’s hard to nail down specific predictions for the housing market is because it’s not yet clear how quickly or how much the Federal Reserve can bring down inflation and borrowing costs without tanking buyer demand for everything from homes to cars.

      I suggest you offset your real estate and get into stocks, A recession as bad it can be, provides good buying opportunities in the markets if you’re careful and it can also create volatility giving great short time buy and sell opportunities too. This is not financial advise but get buying, cash isn’t king at all in this time!

      Minimum wage nowadays means the minimum to survive on food and drive to work and sleep in your car. Minimum wage doesn’t cover any sort of housing anymore. MAYBE a bunk bed in a room shared with 4 people but then isn’t that how slave’s quarters were set up? Minimum wage has regressed us to living like slaves.

      @@mokhanx9080 well bc inflation also effects the costs of their services too. They have many things to deal with. Remember you are renting but it's the landlord who pays off the mortgage meaning as interests rates increase so will his costs.
      Even things like buying new machinery/ furniture for the house is expensive.
      I'm not trying to side with him but people never actually know what goes into being a landlord.

Many of us do know what it’s like lol we watch documentaries some of us even know such people and so I’m sorry but you can’t come try spin this so we look on their side … most landlords don’t just have the one property they let they have a few and that’s just the small scale landlords regardless they can live they are not suffering paying for furniture refurbishments or whatever you tryna say. Some of these rentals are extortion plain and simple you can’t justify it.

      @@obibraxton2232 it's not a "spin", it's simply fact that for the business to be viable as a landlord, the rental income needs to outweigh the mortgage payment, ground rent, management service charges, income tax, and reserves for repairs on building and white goods. From point of morality I agree with you - given the housing shortage, I think landlords should therefore sell their properties, which would open up more houses for first time buyers. If they want to invest somewhere, they should fund more build to rent schemes which would at least increase the number of homes physically available.

    I'm a Polish immigrant who's been living in the UK for years and i absolutely love this country, but at this point me staying in Britain means I have to accept a lower living standard than I would have living in Poland; how absurd is this, considering how in the 90's when i was a kid, my mother - working as a government official - made about 50-75 dollars a month, and 30 years later here we are.. absurd. I'm not planning to leave anytime soon simply because this country is my home, but it's bizarre how i left Poland for UK to escape poverty and now people are migrating to Poland for a better life.

      The UK is a good place to live if you have enough money. The problem is the high cost of housing combined with low wages. I guess the advantage of Poland these days is slightly lower wages but much lower housing costs? The UK has also been deindustrialising continuously since the 1970s whereas Poland has been going in the opposite direction since joining the EU. Ironically in the period you have been here many factories have shut down in the UK and relocated to Poland. I always look at where stuff is made and I have noticed that a lot of things that used to be made in the UK, Italy, Germany etc are now made in Poland.

    We have this problem all over Australia at the moment. Wealthy people bought holiday properties and many moved from the cities during Covid. Airbnb is killing the tourist towns as locals can’t afford to live in them which has lead to businesses closing because they can’t find staff. Governments need to impose limitations in regards to holiday accommodation on people who own multiple dwellings.

      USA we have similar issues. Home prices are so high that some businesses buy homes and turn them into room rentals for their employees. This wasn’t done out of the good of their hearts, but to have safe, clean, reasonably priced housing for lower wage employees.

      @@realfreedom8932 American slave owners after the civil found it was cheaper to just pass laws to keep people poor and living on the edge. That way they don’t have to provide food, clothes or shelter. Or the shelter for many ex-slaves was Prison and they got slop for food, stone walls and cheap dirty mattresses and required to work for that food, shelter and jumpsuit. Freedom wasn’t free.

    I've lived in London my whole life and lucky to live with my family in a council house, for now. I have been looking to move out, the only decent affordable places, that also accept pets are all outside of the city. London is a joke, so is the transport. It also makes me sick to see tiny boxes or crappy rooms in house shares going for anywhere between 700 to over a grand pcm. Daylight robbery.

      I am a working professional who lived in Liverpool council housing for 280ppm all inclusive. I was doing a PhD in Applied Maths and computing. I quit it after 2 yrs and found a job at UK's crown jewel semiconductor company in their Manchester office. Moved to a 2 bed 2 bath adjoining city centre for 1150 ppm. This year, they lost some deal and fired a 1000 employees me including. I then found a job in London for same salary. Tried moving there but the bloodbath in rental market was appalling. Managed to find an unfurnished 1 bed 1 bath in North Maida Vale for 1712ppm. Gave them a holding deposit but moved out of the deal at the last minute with cold feet about short and long term expenses. And mind you I'm on a 4K ppm salary. The plan is to save to buy a house, but back in Manchester, landlord increased the rent to 1200ppm as well. Seems like this country is indeed going crazy!
      Thinking of finding a job in Milan. People will blame Brexit for everything, but not look at how many Chinese investors have propped up the property market, how many council houses have now gone over to migrants housing, that UK's population rise is going off the charts. People are blaming Industries shifting out of the UK, but on the contrary, the digital, aviation and other high tech sectors are the strongest in UK amongst most other G7 nations from EU.
      And I'm writing this as an Immigrant myself. This country is going to rots, because of trying to balance to very extreme ends of spectrum. One end, is the ultra rich or high middle class tech sector workers, and the other end is hourly wage workers full of migrants as well. People suffering themost are lower middle class households. They are trying to avoid falling off the cliff while still aspiring to climb the ladder out of their misery.

    I currently live in Manchester and have recently accepted a job offer in Uppsala, Sweden (about 40 mins train ride from Stockholm). I looked up rental prices in Uppsala, fully expecting it to be substantially higher than Manchester (given the proximity to Stockholm, and Sweden being expensive in general) - but I was pleasantly surprised to find that rent in Uppsala is about 30% cheaper than in Manchester!
    The fact that moving to Scandinavia can now save you money (at least on rent or property) should be a wake up call to the UK...

      Crazy indeed. I lived in Uppsala a few years back. The issue is finding a place to live there and the atrocious second hand renting market. I was extremely lucky to be paying around £550 a month for a really nice flat in thr centre but a friend of mine was paying double that for somewhere smaller due to the secobd hand renting market.
      On the whole though, yes id say Sweden is generally cheaper. You also have far superior building standards. You wont be shivering away and paying a fortune for power in the Swedish winter. Their buildings are actually decent. My boyfriends Swedish and often remarks his coldest winters have been in the UK because of the terrible insulation. I miss Sweden. Brexit has unfortunately made it far harder to escape the UK.

      Dont mention the leccy prices in sweden though?
      Mine is $93 aussie dollars for 3 months a roof fulla solar, hammering the a.c. and devices. 350 days sun per annum.

    It's morally degrading seeing how things are going in this country. I am an Italian been living in the UK for the past ten years, did my studies here and remember telling myself that one day I'd be able to afford more. Well, no. Things have got even worse. The fact that this country is completely left in the hands of greedy investors and private sectors is disgusting. This is kind of happening everywhere in Europe to be fair but especially here. There's no more room for the actual people, all is screwed in its very foundations.

      Property has always been an investment opportunity. Money in construction, money in rental income. None of this is a problem at all. The problem is our planning system and lack of building and high immigration. It is the supply of new homes that is the issue. Landlords mostly by central flats, not suitable for home owners. Their impact isn't that great, but we only delivered 37k homes last year. Their target is 200k. Immigration 225k.

    When I was at uni many girls slept with their landlords out of desperation and couldn’t afford rent. When we had an increase in student finance, landlords up’ed their prices. Land lords are scum with no morals. Any excuse to take your deposit as well. So sad and made life so so hard.

Tenants literally pay off the mortgage for you (as well as a little profit on top usually) and at the end you get a property worth hundreds of thousands or more. For doing what? Calling someone to fix something when it breaks which many landlords use letting agencies for anyway.

    I went to uni in 2009 during the last financial crash and commuted 3 hours every day to get to class, and that’s when I could afford to go. I couldn’t afford to move to the city I was studying in, and applied for uni knowing that. I missed over 10% of my classes because I couldn’t afford the bus to get to class in the first place. I worked part time around my classes but my parents helped me so much as I lived at home and they helped with commute costs. I’d never have been able to go to uni off my own back, and now it’s even worse for students.

      @@karag4487 it’s absolutely worth it. The chance to study a subject that you are passionate about alone is a privilege. I have also found that a degree opens a lot of doors (that’s not to dismiss experience), however a degree in and of itself is of value. Many people don’t end up in the fields they studied as they are too niche, or there are no job openings, and this is where grad schemes come in. People should not let the inability to have the ‘Insta or TikTok uni life’ put them off.
      Edit: I wanted to drop out probably 100 times during my degree due to having very little money, I didn’t go on holidays during the summer to Thailand, I didn’t go backpacking around Europe, I didn’t go out and get shipwrecked during freshers’ because my last train home was before the clubs even opened, and to this day I haven’t used a snapfax. It wasn’t all great and they were probably some of the loneliest days of my life, but it was worth it.

      @@Gates2Aion I now work for a corporate in a senior position having found where my strengths lie in my third year of employment in the industry I studied in. I spent the first couple of years in graduate level jobs figuring out which part of the industry was for me, this was stressful as coming from a background where not many family members went to university, my knowledge of the job market was limited. I eventually found my feet and I enjoy my job for the most part. I am 31 and still renting in my seventh year in industry, as only last year did I start earning enough money to allow me to put some money into savings for a deposit.
      Edit: I don’t drive as I moved out as soon as I could feasibly afford to and had to make a choice between that or having a car. I haven’t been abroad since the last holiday with my parents. I don’t have kids and probably never will as I couldn’t afford to have them in the timeframe I’d ideally like to plus allow myself to to do some of the things I haven’t yet been able to for financial reasons, e.g. buying a house, having holidays, and getting some return on the hard work I’ve put in before having to put kids first.

    Same thing happened in Cyprus , Malta,Spain. Buying a property is not possible at all. Renting also skyrocketed and still some older people think they had it worst . Imagine working your whole life just to be able to rent and save some money for your kid , but nothing special

      @@keirenle maybe but without serious efforts to overhaul the planing system ( essentially just giving NIMBYs the middle finger in response to every complaint). Or regulation what’s to stop housing prices rising to such an extent that everyone who doesn’t own, even those of average incomes and above are forced into abject poverty?
      If this happens mass layoffs will take place and the uk will head into decades of recession until the overinflated housing market is corrected. By the turn that happens the damage to the rest of the economy will be almost irreversible. It’s all well and good the government using housing prices to artificially increase GDP figures but when a majority of your GDP comes from housing there is no money left for your country to actually do anything productive. Housing is slowly eating the rest of the economy and is a massive bubble. If the government lets this continue and the bubble pops there will be nothing left to full back on. The uk economy is increasingly becoming a smoke and mirror show where the only value is perceived value and speculation rather than actual productivity.

    As a 26yr old male I've been homeless for 2 years around West London near Heathrow, Only recently managed to obtain a tenancy, things are getting worst, been to property views at least 5 times a week, and most places only state female only or over 35, I thought there was no discrimination but clearly that's not the case.

      "Line go up" is an obviously unsustainable model in any system; eventually the line hits a hard wall and since that's likely to be population vs land & resources then we're going to have much, much bigger problems than a shrinking economy.
      And it's not just about the numbers. Imagining that we can import millions of people of vastly diverse ethnicities without causing the kind of tribal politics and conflict we see in third world nations is extremely naive.

    It’s also happening in South Korea. I never once imagined I decided to move out of Seoul. I could afford my rent and other stuff but it changed out of nowhere since 2019 slightly… I came back to my hometown where I have no friend since I left a long time ago and now I mostly work and come home. I’m scared of living this world with uncertainty… hopefully everyone is safe and wealthy.

    Born and raised in Manchester. In late 90s I had a very low wage yet could easily afford great 2 bed attic flat near the centre, with lots of disposable money after rent. No way can I afford to live in my home city anymore, I would be "lucky" to even find a shabby room in a shared house forced together with randoms for what I paid in rent then.

    I'm a 36 year old accounting graduate, teaching English in Korea. One of the reasons I'm in no rush to return is the insane rents. A STUDIO IN CARDIFF is around 750 a month. CARDIFF. And to qualify for any rental, your salary needs to be 2.5 times the rent. Fucking ridiculous. My standard of living is much better in Korea, although I don't particularly enjoy teaching.

      Yep same for me. I moved to Japan in 2019. Rent in Aberystwyth for a rotting room with mould: £470 a month plus heat bill. Rent in Kochi Japan for a not nice room: £230 with bills. No brainer.
      Sadly I got a job with a travel agency in early 2020 so my job disappeared and i had to return to the UK, but I'll be back in Japan soon.

    I am a landlord but mortgage free so I never increase rent for my existing tenants. I have however sold off most of my properties because the Government have made things impossible for landlords as you can no longer offset mortgage costs, and amongst other things, you now need an electrical report every time a tenant moves out, even if its every 6 months, so it’s no longer viable. Before anyone says it, I know you can go Ltd but thats extra costs so why bother.. This is why rents have gone up. It’s not because us landlords want to increase rent but because the government have left people no choice which has increased rent and created housing shortage! It’s not greed…

      I have a 2 bed property that I rent out.
      Unfortunately I’ve had no choice to up the rent.
      My own mortgage and insurance has increased on that property, and I also have to factor in the cost of any repairs as cost of labour has also gone up across the construction industry.
      If I didn’t up the monthly payments it would be costing me to have someone rent the place out.

      Some rents are far more than a mortgage repayment on a house! Even in rural Lincolnshire, which was always cheap compared to most of the country, landlords are jumping on the rental bandwagon and asking £1000 for a bog standard three bedroom bungalow, one bathroom with not even a shower attachment, wearing the pub carpet laid by mum and dad forty years ago accompanied by that purple wall which was so stylish in the ‘70’s !

    Students are also often excluded from properties they could afford, just for being students. When I was a student and looking for somewhere to live, lots of properties were advertised with the phrase "no students". What's left are properties that are not very well taken care of, because the landlords can get away with it when it's "just" desparate students. The alternative is expensive student housing, where you don't get much space for your money.

      Some people cannot get a guarantor that would agree to pay the rent if you ever could not ( no wonder really ) that is another reason they would ask for 6 months to 12 months up front rent if cannot get a guarantor.

      @@calderarecords If you are in a LTD company you can offset all costs including interest. A lot of these measures were targeting small landlords holding property in their own names. The best reason for own name was, you could just draw down tax free over time without ever selling by remortgaging, you can't do that limited as you would have to pay tax on what you draw down. It's all about tax. You need higher deposits LTD and lending is more expensive.

    To all whom it may concern,
    We have lived in a small three bedroom council house since I was 6 years old. My mother is 56,
    has rheumatoid arthritis and is in constant pain, my older brother Callum is 25 and has severe
    autism.
    I have been a carer for my mum since I was 7, and have had to watch this person I love so
    much suffer for so long and so intensely. All this finally culminated in my mum developing
    Sepsis after a long period of illness. She was taken into hospital, while I took care of my brother
    myself. The council deem that in order for my brother and those around him to be safe, there
    must be two people watching him at all times. i took care of Callum, by myself because nobody
    else would. The support I had was minimal and all the while I took care of my family. My mum
    discharged herself from Hospital, having experienced abuse in hospital in the early seventies
    she feared and despised hospitals and yet she would stay there for the next two months after
    she was admitted.
    When my mum returned I had to move mountains to get the housing association EMH homes to
    do anything to help. Our house is now falling apart on top of our heads, the walls are black with
    mould, you walk out of my bedroom and you see your breath - we're not even through October
    yet.
    Last year our bathroom ceiling caved in, make no mistake, if somebody was in the bath or the
    shower, the brick, plaster, and metal would have killed them. In response the housing
    association put up a piece of plywood to cover the gaping hole - I then proceeded to have an
    allergic reaction to the plywood everyday for two weeks.
    A couple of weeks into my mum being in Hospital, I had a psychotic episode brought on by the
    trauma and the lack of sleep. The taxi that should take my brother to his day service in Heanor
    was canceled because I did not consent to my brother going to stay with an agency in derby
    because he was already traumatised as it is. My brother is verbal, he is mobile however he has
    the mental age of a toddler. I tried to give him all the comfort and security I could. This move on
    the council's behalf to me, seemed spiteful, and it only made my life more difficult as I had to
    take my brother in a taxi myself.
    I dropped him off, spoke to a woman who works there who asked "and how are you doing?" I
    replied there is no me - I'll think about me in three weeks. This nightmare continued for two
    months and is still ongoing.
    I got the bus to the hospital where my mum was unconscious from the opiates for the pain. I
    then went home, phoned a few loved ones for help. And woke up looking at myself in the mirror
    having slashed my arm to pieces with a serrated kitchen knife.
    Now, I am desperately trying to find a place to live, I have ruled out shared accommodation
    because I will need to collapse for at least a week when all this is finally over.
    The social workers, EMH, and the council knew about the state of the house, they had deemed
    it 'Unfit for habitation' three separate times. They knew about my mum's health, I remember
    going with her to the GP in spring where he looked her up and down. She was shaking with
    pain, her swollen legs wrapped in constricting bandages because of some leg infections that
    would not heal. And he rejected her when she asked for a steroid injection that would stop the
    pain for six months while she awaits surgery.
    In the midst of my life falling apart like this, my company Mad Truth has raised £7000 in grant
    funding, had it's work exhibited internationally, in New Art exchange and most recently in the
    biggest cinema in Nottingham where a film I had made raised £1500 for a local homelessness
    charity. This means that people will be able to keep warm this winter and feed their families
    because of my work. And still we live in a house unfit for an animal, and I at 22 despite my
    prospects and talent feel almost completely hopeless. I want nothing more than a new start, first
    for myself and then for my family.
    But to do that I have to shed light on the negligence and let people hear my story. The actions of
    these people under the current system have been ignorant, negligent and criminal.
    Here's an example - workers came from EMH last year, they were rude, disruptive and
    unpleasant. My brother's room, which is the size of a wardrobe, had a horrific smell that
    persisted for months. They made a huge deal out of replacing the rotten floorboards. The
    accused my brother of urinating in the corner, and that was the reason for the damage. I was
    later informed that that was a breach of the disability discrimination act. Fast forward to
    September. We're on the phone to someone from EMH, when we voiced our frustration about
    the smell and damp returning (despite my brother now living with the agency in Derby), the man
    from EMH told us 'it's your responsibility, as the tenant, to replace the floorboards because they
    are decorative'. It's unreal.
    Please help spread our message, nobody should ever have to go through this. And I have no And I have no
    doubt other people are in a similar crisis.

      Take them to Court for the discrimination, you should qualify for Legal Aid. Speak to the Citizens Advice Bureau for help with that, or search for Solicitors that specialise in that type of discrimination claim. It sounds as though you may have a case, if successful you are likely to be compensated for that discrimination.

    I was renting and each year in San Diego CA it would go up a $100 or even $200. I left and went to the midwest and was lucky to buy a house before the prices went crazy. I really understand the pain some are going through. I co-worker moved to San Diego and he paid 1 million - I can't image a mortgage like that. I've heard 2 in 3 houses are owned by speculators, this will change if the economy collapses.

    It's difficult in Manchester at the moment. My landlord increased my rent by £200 because of the demand in my area. He refused to cancel the increase citing increased demand in the area. I cannot afford this and will definitely put me in the red and so I am looking for something else in a cheaper area probably on the outskirts. But even this is not easy. I may have to accept the increase and cover the extra trying Deliveroo or Uber Eats jobs on the weekends. A seven day work week.

    My heart goes out to today's young people trying to find an affordable, decent place to live. Back in the late 70's/early 80s I just looked at the Flats to let section in the London Evening Standard newspaper ( there were pages and pages of them). You made an appointment, viewed the flat, and paid your deposit and 2 weeks rent in advance (weekly rent back then). All very simple. It all seems such a nightmare nowadays. Thanks to Mum & Dad, who pushed, and pushed me to buy my own place in the 80's, I did 3 jobs to save for the deposit. It was the best move I ever made. A 2 bedroomed garden flat in Camden Town, London for £69k. It was a lot back then, plus the mortgage interest rates were 14%. However, after making a few cutbacks, and making some sacrifices, things got easier. I think if I was a young person starting out in 2023, I really don't think I would be able to cope. I really hope that things will get better, because this housing crisis cannot continue.

    So they can raise the rent as much as they please?! That's all regulated even for private landlords in Sweden, if they charge too much for square meter they can end up in court against the city and ending up being liable to pay back rent to tenants.

      Office do they say clewr off sleep on the streets ? Or do they put you up in emergency housing for the night whilst
      They look for something for you ? Which other countries offer this?
      They will also sort your out with living expenses or make up for any shortfalls if your wages are
      Low.Yes you won’t live in a fancy home but you will live and if you’re savvy wit your money you won’t starve either

    I’m a student at a Manchester University. I can no longer afford rent in the city. I’ve moved back home to Wales. My commute into Manchester takes around two hours. Somehow the extortionate train prices are cheaper than renting a student accommodation in the city or the outskirts.

      As a suggestion, You could move to Darwen, Bolton or Blackburn, only 30 mins on the train, although run down and depressing, very cheap and a worthy sacrifice rather than spending 4 hrs of your life on a train! Although TBH it’s also worth not taking the maintenance loan if you can!

    As someone who does not have family to live with it is insane to try and get your career started.
    Rent+ transport (tfl is also the 2nd most expensive network system in the world)+ groceries + medical bills +other bills left me only 150£ each month for savings after I had received a promotion.
    When my former employer and I discussed my payrise after a promotion and I mentioned the inflation and rising cost of living his response was "I don't see how that is my problem".... The other employees working under me where only able to work there for less because they still lived with their parents.

      @@gricius how do you save £500 per month with a 25k salary in London? The average price for a room in 2022 in London ( if you are lucky to find one) is 900-1000 pounds ( yes, a room). It's not easy to find for less. The average travel card from zone 3 to 1 is 167 pounds. The average cost for grocery shop can go up to 120/130, particularly if you are lactose and gluten intolerant and don't have cheaper stores close to where you live. This is already 1197/1297 pounds depending on your rent ( and hoping the bills are included which is often not the case anymore as landlords are now not including the bills due to the costs).
      Add a cheap phone plan such as giffgaff. To this you need to add other things such as toiletries, extra bills that are often not covered by your landlord and a small budget to enjoy 1 drink or lunch once a month...what a sad life. If you are lucky enough not to have medical issues that is already 1400 pounds. If you then add another 100 to your savings that is 1500 and this doesn't include multiple prescription charges or medical bills for urgent private care. You will be left with 100 pounds x month to pay for everything else. Even if you remove prescription charges and the cost of 1 drink and dinner per month, that will leave you with roughly £200/250 to go out, buy extra stuff you might need per month and that's even too much...most people have 80-120 pounds left after paying only rent/bills, cheap phone plan, food, transport.
      Not sure where you get this £500 pounds from unless you are one of the lucky ones to still pay 500-600 pounds for a room in London LOL
      Also don't forget many of us pay student loans and if you also pay for the pension scheme that leaves you with even less money. Many of us had to opt out from the pension scheme as we need that extra 80-100 pounds per month to survive.

      @@Lyra94forever essentially, yeah. The increased rental prices at the moment are eating up all the money. But £900-1000 for a room in zone 3? C'mon. I agree, it's a difficult situation finding a room right now due to influx of students, but there are better deals, where you pay max £800 for a big-sized room, which my landlord just rented out in zone 2 in the west, which is generally more expensive than east or north. You can call me a lucky one then, because I rented a room for £700, and it was only this July. Travel is £80. Food can range from £150 to £200. I earn only £1600 a month (that's after student loan repayments and work pension contribution) and I manage to put away £500 easily if not more. Sure, if you're young in your early-mid 20s you want to go out often. I remember when I was this age, I used to spend like fricking £200 in one night out. Club entry fee, 1 gram of coke, drinks, uber. Now I value more passive lifestyle by staying at home, but you can call it sad life.

    as a landlord I have always charged a fare rent , I can not see how people can afford these new rents .With all the red tape from the government and to keep up with the stringent new requirements,and as my long term tenants leave I sell the houses {most of my tenants have been with me 15 years plus]

    Under the Tories, the number of new social rented homes has fallen by over 80%, so we are now building 30,000 fewer socially rented homes each year than when Labour left office. and labour were under building. but when u have a party of ppl like camaron who said why build affordable housing that just building for a labour voter

      @@888ssss it wasnt though was it with there public spending we got affordable housing, new roads, hospitals, an increase in nursing, policing, doctors, a NHS that was in the black, broadband through out the country. what we have have from over 10 years of austerity is lower manufacturing the selling of royal mail, the selling of of the national grind, NHS england falling into the red ,the drop in houseing to the point no affordable homes where built in a year, less police harsher laws on protesting, in 12 years the tories have spent more and racked up more debt than any labour gove combined. have you looked up what the deficit is. it is 101.9% so no it wldnt be worse under labour.

    I live in Turkey. More than 4000 kilometers away but exactly same situation. Government restricted annual rent increments. Landlords sell their houses to each other in order to reset this rent limit. :)

    I’m a single mum with 3 young children. My landlord is selling and I can’t afford/ get a property so come October I’m not sure what will happen. It’s a worrying time for a lot of people

      Very correct l made the same point in the comments section. I work as a full time civil servant but still cannot afford a mortgage but still renting and the rent is high.

    I am a RENTER and "I MATTER"
    ITS TIME TO SAVE OUR NATION REFORM UK
    The people are now, more than ever becoming aware that REFORM UK is the best choice for our nation.
    They have constantly been giving us sound advice now for many years in relation to a multitude of issues relating to immigration, migrant crisis, current economic issues and sclerotic mindset of our politicians and was always shut down and silenced.

    Interesting reply at 3:46 as to how the landlord justified high prices for accommodation " There are a lot of factors in there like any People view that landlords are just cashing in on rents but there are a lot of factors in there ,so there is a risk, like any other business . We are investing a lot of money and taking on take on a lot of debt on your head, and you've got those liabilities. So there are a lot of different aspects to take into account.
    He said all of this wearing a expensive looking suit, standing next to an expensive looking Range Rover and Lamborghini. Now, he may not have owned any of these things and it may have been only for show but it not exactly making his case look like a strong one.
    This situation is only going to end badly. These short term gains are creating a society in which there will only be losers. No matter how much money you may make you are still not independent of society. If it all turns into a dog eat dog situation where cash is king....... well it not somewhere that I'd want to live.
    Thatchers politics have finally reached their endgame because of political apathy. Unless people take society, politics, ethics and doing the right thing for, ALL not the few , well, I don't see things getting any better soon.

    In Ilford, Essex or London landlords are asking 6 months' rent in advance. Rent for a 1 bedroom flat is a minimum 1200/month. 1650 in central London. You have to be very lucky to get a place in London.

    I am an immigrant from 3rd world island nation who now calls London home. When I was a child the kindness of fellow immigrants for my country help my parents save money by letting us rent their home/room for relatively low price which helped us save money and buy our own home. Now I pass on the same kindness. Two of my tenants over the pass 6 -7 years were able to save enough of their hard earned to go on to buy their own house. The tenants money savviness and hard work obviously out trumps my help. One of the tenant is a nurse(and her son) so helping them get a good footing on the social ladder provided happiness.
    The English man with his fancy Lambo is driven by greed and vanity of needing to show off his status. What a primitive 21st century creature! One of the biggest problem with this country is people like those who forget their past. No gratitude and lack intelligence to realise importance of ensuing we pull up our fellow citizen who are loyal to this nation.
    The government of this nation is run by fools but the people are also to be blamed for this crisis and the more chaotic one that is to come.

    My daughter works full time in a good jobshe as a first class degree but has to live in houses of multiple occupacy in Manchester the prices are phenomonal

    Not just young people many are still stuck in rental trap. Landlords are definitely taking advantage as they put their prices up before energy rises. Its now whoever offers the most gets it, a bidding war like the one girl said. I live alone and 1 salary is just not cutting the demand in these prices. Hard enough for people with two average salaries

      @hui flora yes but I was saying that rents went way up before that happened. The stamp duty was removed to help people so then everyone wanted to buy a house at that point causing prices for houses to increase, many landlords decided to sell so now there was so few left to rent that those landlords saw the opportunity to increase rent due to high demand vs no properties.
      Also 2nd point there are many landlords with the mortgages paid off yet those ones will put rent up as well because they can as that's what the prices are in the area

    *This is likely a dumb question, but is there no such thing as 'rent control' in the UK?* Here in Ontario, Canada, a landlord cannot price hike like this to existing tenants. They're only allowed to increase a % (I think cost of living) when it's time to re-sign a lease. Now, if someone moves out, then they can raise it to whatever they want to a NEW tenant.

      Yeah nothing like rent control here. Landlords can and do put rent up when you renew a tenancy but they can’t put it up midway through the contract or anything like that (that would breach the contract). But I don’t believe there is a limit on what they can up it at renewal, and herein lies the problem.

      In England and Wales a landlord can raise a rent to the market level every year, once. There is a right to refer the change to a Rent Tribunal. We are seeing a steady increase in appeals but we find few are actually over the market level. Old tenancies enjoy a rent cap of 5% plus RPI on a review every two years and are typically 20% below market rents assuming good condition.

Or am I misunderstanding (several) news stories & documentaries when I hear "my landlord raised it again (they make it sound like it just happened x2 in less than a year) or "my rent was raised 100-200 pounds" - - I suppose it depends what the rent cost was to begin with.

      @@Luna.3.3.3 yes, no cap on modern rentals, save for a Tribunal referral. There are caps on much older tenancies started before the early 1980's though but they are dying off when the tenancies end. Control applies to the particular tenancy and not the property.
