My great great uncle Reinert Lear came over as a kid from Norway in the late 1890’s and settled in Northern Wisconsin near Rhinelander. Of his many jobs in the logging industry he was the guy who sat at the top of the conveyor belt that lifted the logs out if the “flowage” lake and into the mill. His job was to eyeball the log and tell the sawyer what orientation would produce the most efficient board footage from the log. Later he had a small shack with a wood burning stove in it on skis that he dragged to the remote logging camps behind a pre war Dodge truck so he could be the camp cook. We loved visiting him in the woods. His potatoes were delicious cooked in fat that probably had never been changed. He was a real character; one of many in the north woods from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. I miss him a lot. Larry in Arizona

In '77 I visited B.C./Vancouver Island on a camping trip with hubby and kids. We stayed at a KOA campground for two night on the island (outside of Sanich). A truck rolled in around mid evening and dumped a load of cedar for campfires. Campfires be damned. As a flatlander, this was unheard of! LOLOL I wanted to pack the trunk and bring it home. I'll never forget the smell of that cedar. I have a cedar chest at home and it sure didn't smell like these freshly sawn trees. Thanks for the memories. I know there is no smell a vision, but I swear I can smell that beautiful Ceader here. I remember that smell from working with my father at job sights. He was a builder. He could do so amazing rooms. He did it all. Plumbing, HVAc, electric, DESIGN, ECT......❤

I worked at a mill where we re-sawed dimensional lumber from huge salvaged long leaf pine beams. in that process the beams were always pre-scanned with metal detectors in order to save blades.
Old lumber guy here. I would’ve done what you’re doing in my younger days. Love what you create. The one thing people don’t get is the smell, love the wood smell but the cedar is the best. People will relate to the cedar balls for the closet smell. Keep up the amazing work you do.

What you were dealing with was the pith or some say the heart of the log. Sometimes it's normal for even cedar to get some rot starting to happen. As far as the cable grown into the tree, I feel like you made the best choice sawing it the way you did. Good luck fellas!
Really gorgeous color in that cedar! Almost looks like purple heart. My first instinct would have been to flip that 90 deg because, while your boards are more narrow they would be clearer of defects. I guess it depends on what you are hoping to use the boards for that would determine whether you value width with defects vs narrow and clear.
I agree! It looked almost like purple heart to me too. I think my monitor needs to be color corrected lol and the boards I agree too..it depends on one's market. wider boards usually bring/cost more, but good grain figure is highly, highly desirable.
Another advantage would have been, that that cable is visible (to the operator) in the bottom half. EDIT: Oops, commented too soon, erroneous orientation with regard to the location of that cable.
I love working with cedar. Easy to work with and the smell is great. I have just finished a headboard and frame and gonna replace my cabinets with worm holed chestnut. I lucked out and bought a trailer load for $300. Love your work. God bless and keep it up
I ran some old used rough cut cedar boards through my planer just to see if I could get some use out of it. It was scavenged from demolishing a ratty old shed.The interior beauty of the old weathered cedar was amazing. I ended up varnishing it after making exterior mill work out of it. It is very beautiful and cost me nothing. It’s not as nice as this log but still some great looking wood.
after construction use boat spar clear poly - 4 coats or better: every line will pop into full color that will last a few seasons before needing added coats. All wood will grey in time - UV gets them all. So far i see cedar chest that would rival Lane company. Love to have some like that.

That's obviously one of the drawbacks of cutting these beautiful boards- metal that's embedded in the wood. Regardless, those boards you cut are terrific!!! 🧐👍
Love watching your video's. Brings back memories from over 70 years ago when my father operated a sawmill. We didn't have Cedar logs but made lots of boards from Spruce, Pine and the odd Poplar. Sawmill was of course a lot different than yours. Can almost smell the Cedar just watching. Keep them coming my friend.
When I redid my back yard, I put in a cedar fence, it was gorgeous until it started to age and turned grey. It seems to be soft too cause somme of the slats came loos with age. With the wood you cut you could use it to make a cedar closet. Nice job.
You need to clean and stain your fence every year, to keep it looking great and last for many, many years! We have post and railing fencing and they need to be stained every year, or they wouldn’t last long! Take care of it and it will take care of keeping your fencing nice 😎

Nice cedar logs that type cedar makes beautiful cedar chests, it looks like that tree had a wire fence or clothes line of some type grow into it,there could be more,a medal detector would certainly come in handy,nice cedar boards

I worked in a sawmill. The sawmill cut thousands of cedar logs. I have seen hundreds of thousands on board feet of cedar boards, especially the clear cedar boards with no knots. They sure are pretty.
I mentioned using a metal detector in the previous video that I watched. The metal can have been in the tree for along time and the tree grows around it. Very common on farms near the dwellings etcetera. People attach miscellaneous stuff to the trees and then time marches on embedding it out of sight.
Back in the day activist would pound spikes into the trees for the sole purpose of shutting down loggers. Imagine the blade kickback hitting a metal Spike.

HI guys! Actually, when you found that cable, I would have removed the end metre of the log, completely. That way, you would have avoided the cable, and the rot, almost entirely. Admittedly your boards would have been shorter, but you could still have had the wider boards, to make up for it.
Love watching your videos. I'm looking into starting a business cutting boards and your videos help me in many ways. I've requested Wood-Mizer brochures and am looking to move (that's already a necessity due to other reasons.) I'm thinking of a small house on lots of land, preferably a wooded area/farm situation, for this very reason. Having heard you say companies deliver logs to you (I'm thinking free, so they can just get rid of them) is also an incentive. Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos! Oh, and, yes, I would have flipped the log 90 degrees to avoid the rot and metal piece.

Thanks for asking. I don't really know the specific use of it but we all that red cedar had a distinct aroma. My idea is that it be used for oil infusion and mixed with scented flowers or may be for aroma therapy. Just my idea thank u.

There are two things against using it for table tops. One, it is a softwood and even with a finish on it it will dent very easily and two, the beautiful red color will fade into grey very quickly when exposed to light. The only thing I have seen that was even close to retaining that beautiful red was the inside of a hope chest that was opened very rarely.
The boards look really good , fyi you probably already know they make a blade sharpener and straightener worth the investment you can sometimes find them at auctions too . Ps have a whole pasture full of those lol , love the vids and what you guys do .

I think even with holes or cracks, I’ve seen it filled with epoxy on live edge tables and such. Would be gorgeous as live edge and might make more money that way. Sheesh, the prices I’ve seen in California are beyond ridiculous.

You made the better choice on how to get more board out of it. I would just love to work with you for one day. I love wood grains. Cedar especially. I'm disabled, and can't afford a small mill. But I would love to experience it one time at least.
My mom would put cedar shaving in a dish and put in her dresser to keep her clothes smelling fresh .. you might be able to recycle your shaving in some manner to make extra money..
Look at how beautiful that cedar looks. I would love to have some boards about half of an inch. Half inch boards will be about 3/8 inch after it is planed. It will be great for making little dressers, clocks, etc.

I operate a mill and we get a ton of Red Oak, unfortunately it smells like vomit when you're cutting it

The first trims can be made into wall features. Like with shiplap but in cedar. Leave bark on and fill and finish gaps. Stunning. Great show!

Why don't you go over your logs with a metal detector first? I worked at saw mill and we always did that.

I would definitely rotate log and then start cutting 1'' boards from that side. Just looks like you would get more undamaged boards that way.

My dad had a Woodmizer mill like this one,,he cut some fine lumber with it...it was all hydro very easy to operate,,

Instead of blowing the dust off the log, why not vaccume it off and add to that collected in the bucket?
Or use a drywall trowel to scrape into a pile like many other UA-camrs do. Looks like more dust is left on the board than what goes out the exhaust.

You made the better choice on how to get more board out of it. I would just love to work with you for one day. I love wood grains. Cedar especially. I'm disabled, and can't afford a small mill. But I would love to experience it one time at least.

My mom would put cedar shaving in a dish and put in her dresser to keep her clothes smelling fresh .. you might be able to recycle your shaving in some manner to make extra money..

Look at how beautiful that cedar looks. I would love to have some boards about half of an inch.
Half inch boards will be about 3/8 inch after it is planed. It will be great for making little dressers, clocks, etc.
