ABOUT THE SCORE: After several years's absence from scoring features in order to focus on concert works, chamber music and silent film scores, John Scott returned in 2011 with a lushly thematic horror score for an undeserving and anemic mess of a horror film, "The Wicker Tree", original "Wicker Man" director Robin Hardy's long-belated (and limply-received) follow up. Evoking the Scottish countryside with a sweeping melody explored at the onset of this suite, Scott allows the theme to become deconstructed and broken down as a more insidious melody, introduced in a devilish march form at 6:12, avails itself as a representation of the Neo-Pagan cult in the film. A more mysterious theme acting as a general motif of intrigue and drama is heard several times (see 7:20) and is redolent with John Scott-isms in its lush orchestration - high circular figures in the violins above low string melodic lines, cascading woodwinds and layered soft brass support. Later in the suite as muscular Stravinsky-like action takes hold, Scott clever allows several of these themes to play in violent, sometime frantic counterpoint with one another. To hear the composer's voice so boldly displayed in a film hailing from as recent a vintage as 2011, with such lyricism, satisfying orchestration and creativity on display, is a testament to Scott's unassailable assuredness of voice. Fans in particular of the thematic horror/thriller music of Pino Donaggio, Richard Band and Bernard Herrmann are likely to have a field day with this score, and Scott's often-employed band of players with the Royal Philharmonic rise to the occasion with enthusiastic zeal.

En plus d'une qualité d'écriture remarquable de la part de John Scott, les enregistrements sont interprétés par des orchestres de renommée.
