Jim Henson was a bloody GENIUS!!! None of that world looked like anything we see in reality except perhaps the generic rolling hillside or the mountains. With NO CG he created an entirely new environment. That took real talent and vision. He also had to have an absolutely superior crew who shared his vision perfectly. This movie doesn't get enough credit. Loved it as a child and will love it until I croak.
I totally agree, puppetry makes characters look more real, and creating your own environment where the filming will take place, and I’m talking all from scratch, all in person and without CGI or any digital computer crap again makes everything look more real, frank oz and Jim Henson did an amazing job and what they did was a labour of love, and that’s what made the movie so fantastic. Frank oz’ Yoda is so much better than the CGI one
@@pogchampminku2535 I'm 48 yrs old and I remember seeing this in the theater as a child (I still live in the neighborhood where the theater once was but of course it's no longer there). I was already familiar with Jim Henson cause the "Muppet Show" came on every day, so when the tv spot for the Dark Crystal aired I immediately asked my father to take me to see it, and when he did......of course I became an instant fan. It was like nothing I've ever seen before and I still got old childhood drawings locked in my shed where I tried to draw the Jen and the Skeksis. Many years later I was shocked to find out that it bombed at the box-office!😮
As a child watching this for the first time, I almost wanted to turn off the movie after watching the opening scene with the Skesis, I was completely terrified . But then once this scene of the mystics harmonizing played afterwards, it was like I could literally feel the fear and discomfort leave my body, it was so soothing. Such a great usage of contrast in displaying the opposition between Skesis and Mystics. This one calming scene gave me the courage to keep watching and BOY was I glad I did!
It's just downright AMAZING what Jim Henson and company could do with puppets to portray an alien world! The world of Thra and its creatures looked a LOT more awesome than what CGI can pull off!
@@jeffzebert4982 absolutely!!! Such a wholesome and fulfilling production, you could definitely tell they took their time and put a lot of thought and effort in creating this world. It's a shame we don't see much amazing and unique creativity in movies these days anymore
Another world, another time, in the age of wonder. A thousand years ago, this land was green and good... until the Crystal cracked. For a single piece was lost. A shard of the Crystal. Then, strife began; and two new races appeared: the cruel Skeksis, the gentle Mystics. Here in the Castle of the Crystal, the Skeksis took control. Now the Skeksis gather in the sacred chamber, where the Crystal hangs above a shaft of air and fire. The Skeksis, with their hard and twisted bodies, their harsh and twisted wills. For a thousand years, they have ruled... yet now, there are only ten. A dying race, ruled by a dying emperor, imprisoned within themselves in a dying land. Today, once more, they gather around the Crystal as the first sun climbs to its peak. For this is the way of the Skeksis. As they ravaged the land, so, too, they learned to draw new life from the sun. Today, once more, they will replenish themselves, cheat death again, through the power of their source, their treasure, their fate, The Dark Crystal. But today, the Ceremony of the Sun gives no comfort. Today, an emperor lies dying. Today, a new emperor must seize the throne. A thousand years ago, the Crystal cracked. And here, far from the Castle, the race of Mystics came to live in a dream of peace. Their ways were the gentle ways of natural wizards... yet now, there are only ten. A dying race, numbly rehearsing the ancient ways in a blur of forgetfulness. But today, the Ritual gives no comfort. Today, the wisest of the Mystics lies dying. Today, they summon the one who must save them.
This has one of the funniest memories from when I was in the Army. There were about 5-6 stalls--side by side--and all were used, including by me. The Mystics/urRu would fit perfectly in Star Wars, they really do have that kind of space wizard appearance and feel to them. If The Dark Crystal had never been made, they could've easily included them in Star Wars as minor characters just with a different name, kinda like the background cameo appearance by the E.T./Broto Asogi senators in The Phantom Menace. I have a feeling that if the Mystics/urRu existed in Star Wars, they'd probably be some of the oldest most force attuned beings in the galaxy along with Yoda's species, more than likely being around long before the founding of the Jedi order itself. They could've even made a story where Luke tracks down a small, secluded tribe of Mystics on a distant outer rim planet after Return Of The Jedi during his travels to try and gain a deeper understanding of the force, possibly after learning of their existence via some ancient Jedi texts that Yoda kept in his hut on Dagobah, and maybe he ends up finding out that the Mystics never actually joined the Jedi order or used lightsabers since they had a much more philosophical, grass roots view of the force, kinda like Qui Gon Jinn but way more leftfield.
I can imagine that even the Urskeks could be seen as Force weilders, which would explain their supernatural abilities and their knowledge of the crystal
