I'm 71, started Keto last August and lost 65lb. Net carb worked for me, I ate mostly whole foods but slowly trying them now that I've reached my goal weight. I've tried all diets over many years, lost and gained back weight, Keto is lifestyle, not a diet, for me because I feel great and don't want to yoyo again.
I like and appreciate this doctor and his colleague because they are kind and tell us not to worry too much, which we've been conditioned to do. I think anything to the extreme can be both difficult and negative.
I am using Keto to live healthier than before I am not doing it that seriously but use it as a guideline, I have substantially reduced my carbs, no sugar, no Gluten, I still eat veg, I take home made apple cider vinegar, and am losing weight and feel better, oh and I stopped drinking, this works for me
Dr. Westman's audio is great. The interviewer is recording ambient audio, which sounds hollow and is not clear. Please look into using a better microphone, such as a lavalier mic.
Hi Malcolm Achtman, we have purchased to microphones for future episodes, although two episodes have already been recorded prior to the purchase. From the end of June, you will notice the new audio 😊
My problem is that I rarely feel “hunger” ever since I started IF over a year ago. So, coupling that with Keto lifestyle I feel even less hunger. Then it becomes a mental game of getting enough food for proper nutrition.....which leads me to a tailspin of what and how should I eat?
If you’re concerned about getting enough solid nutrition, you might want to focus on getting enough quality protein (meat, fish, eggs). The minimum is no less than 1.2 grams per kilo of body weight every day. (So, about .6 grams per pound of ideal body weight). Many women undereat protein and fat because of the decades of brainwashing this culture put them through. Sardines are your friends. That and beef liver are the healthiest foods on the planet, and pretty cheap, too.
@@coffeemachtspass Unfortunately I have an aversion to Sardines......my late Dad and son ate them all the time. Plus pickled Herring...Only like Sashimi...all types of fish w/o the rice., Tuna.....from raw to cooked, Cod, Pollock, Smoked Wild caught Salmon, Scallops/Bay Scallops which are really a type of non-stinging Ray called Skate and fried or scampered Shrimp. Can't abide Beef livers taste at all...thinking about getting desiccated liver as substitute. Wonder if I dehydrated my own would work?
Not only should you look at total carbs but also the ingredients to make sure there aren't poisonous add ons like soybean oil, canola oil, or added sugar.
He says that the total carb method is better to get results than the net carb method. The total carb method is way hardest to carry out, of course! It's very little amount of vegetables or nuts or berries, and avocado! that has around 9 g of total carbs and 7 g of fiber per 100 g. For most people, changing the total carbohydrate intake from 200-450 g to only 20g net, it works! But for some, they have to go the stricter way. But I usually say, the best "diet" is the one that you can keep in your daily life. Otherwise, we lose our time just trying and failing again. Something doable is the best way.
Exercise is the key. I used to eat all kind of sugars and carbs when I was landscaping all day. i rode a mountain bike everywhere. I was too healthy I felt so light and free all the time.
I'm not the doctor, but I just buy uncured bacon so I can avoid the sugar and the nitrates. Applegate "Sunday Bacon" is a good brand if you have that available.
I have a question for Dr. Westman, something that keeps coming up on some keto podcasts and websites. After a year or two on a keto diet, it seems that some people see a rise in serum glucose, although when they test their insulin, this remains low and stable. It is sometimes called 'adaptive glucose sparing'. Could Dr. Westman give his thoughts on this, especially on what causes it and whether it is a concern?
Hi, Dr. Westman. I had no idea insulin causes salt retention. Wow. I am currently taking resveratrol supplements. Can you tell me if you believe this is ok? I was a little concerned as to whether resveratrol supplements contain a high carbohydrate count. Thank you!
it's crazy to think that replacing a food that you can't eat with some kind of substitute will prove successful in restricting that food. If you make Ice cream without sweetener, I'm in. But if you have to have sweetener . . . you are carb addicted and to engage in that "treat" feeds your carb addiction. It does not feed your health.
Jmho: I'm Guessing he would say you shouldn't be on OMAD every day of every week. Dr. Valter Longo's (on UA-cam) research showed that for Longevity that the animals who did I.F. 5 days a week but ate regularly (but well) 2 days a week (for humans he suggests the weekends) were the longest living. That's my personal goal. Perhaps not yours. But This doc has said the body has zero need for carbs.
When is Master Class is coming as I subscribed to it but so far I have not heard anything about it Also where can I get Dr Westman simple eating receipies just simple everyday eating options for normal three times a day meals please? Thanks I get notifications into my inbox in my gmail but when I try to reply it brings up utube and I must go thru the whole dialog thing or how else can I find my question and answers in UA-cam video??? Thanks
Why would I limit my calories in the fats and dairy like cheese, when I'm very athletically active? 2 to 3 hour hikes in the mountains. 2 to 3 hour mountain bike rides too. I eat under 30 or 40 grams of carbs so my muscles need the fat calories to keep from bonking , or hitting the wall.
I don't think keto is for people that exercise a lot. In my 20s I ate sugar and carbs as much as I wanted because I was landscaping all day in the sun. I would sweat and then I could wash off with hoses. That was a great job. I was always very clean, no chemicals clogging my pores. I was so healthy and light I learned reiki. I rode a mountain bike everywhere. My take is that food is burned that then turns to ashes which must be fat. These ashes are acidic and cause aching in the joints. Overly acidic foods causes the body to take calcium from the bones. Can't be overly acidic if always exercising. I have read in several places that all animals and animal products are acidic. Matters to me now because I don't move much anymore. Plants contain all the proteins we need, said one naturopath. The body is always keeping us at around 7.4 Ph. Too many acidic foods changing that number seems to me to be the overall problem of everyone. We have to remember to overcompensate for the acidic air and water and medicines. Chemicals are acidic. Even cooking some alkaline foods cause them to be acidic. I don't remember these doctors speaking of the acidic/alkaline balance we need to keep.
I’ve tried grass fed beef and I did not find it “better tasting”. In fact I didn’t like it at all. Grass fed butter though, oh baby! Side note grass fed is not more sustainable. If everyone switched to grass fed we’d run out of food in no time.

This is how I got lost in internet keto! BUT I am back I found your challenge and cannot wait to start! ❤
Dr. W, just love your spin on things as a researcher and a very caring doctor. Keep up the good work you two!
Thank you Dr. Westman for your wise counsel. When asked, I always suggest "Total Carbs". Net carbs, fancy desserts and recipes can become dangerous!!

Thank you Dr. Westman. You just said you are looking for the studies that show grass-fed beef and butter are better. Yay. Me too.

That would be great, having a true Keto Certification

Excellent interview and topic! Thanks Dr Westman for all you are doing. We appreciate it!!👍🏻👍🏻
Great interview. Thank you🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I was very surprised to learn that medication that treats hypothyroidism raises blood sugar.
Such a pertinent and helpful subject!

How does this way of eating compare to the firman weight loss?
Thank you great info!

Hi Sasha, the masterclass will be launching this Saturday 😊 please send an email to academy@adaptyourlife.com and I will add you to the wait list.
I take an antidepressant. Is that a problem? I'm also 70 so I lose slowly.
No problem if you are monitored for the underlying illness.
Yes a keto certification
I feel bad when I lower my carbs . Is it a mineral deficency DR. WESTMAN?
Hi Erica, it’s really hard to give you feedback as we don’t know all the facts. Carbs are not an essential nutrient, so no mineral deficiencies
what if you are eating very low calorie, on keto does this slow down your metabolism!
Royal Scribe Comments this is the Adapt Team answering, I would say yes
I confused about count only total carbs, you mean it is better to limit sweetners too

After meeting your goal can you take a day or two off??
thats up to you..i found I couldn't because it immediately made me crave more junk food.
Dr. Wessman I have been doing keto for just over a year now should I be taking breaks every week or once a month or or can I just stay on keto forever
I think you can do a "well-formulated" keto diet forever. "Well-formulated" meaning real foods, feeling well, etc.

Umm, Costco has Autumn Gold bars by the box. 11g net carbs.
That's a lot, more than I eat in a day, try doing without products. Not everthing that is labeled Keto is good to buy or eat.
@@kayoxford7442 I know. I stopped buying keto crap. If I’m going to go off the wagon I make cookies or buy real ice cream.
