  • One of cinema's most savage Westerns? Let's take a look at Soldier Blue (1970) starring Candice Bergen, Peter Strauss and Donald Pleasence. Directed by Ralph Nelson it's the controversial story of two Cheyenne ambush survivors trying to reach the safety of the nearest fort... however waiting for them there is violence and despair...

After a cavalry group is massacred by the Cheyenne, only two survivors remain: Honus (Peter Stauss), a naive private devoted to his duty, and Cresta (Candice Bergen), a young woman who had lived with the Cheyenne two years and whose sympathies lie more with them than with the US government. Together, they must try to reach the cavalry's main base camp. As they travel onward, Honus is torn between his growing affection for Cresta, and his disgust for her anti-American beliefs. They reach the cavalry campsite on the eve of an attack on a Cheyenne village, where Honus will learn which side has really been telling him the truth...

In 1970 this was one of the most savage films ever to hit the big screen, with a mixture of odd couple comedy and astonishing violence... directer Ralph Nelson delivered a hard R rated cut that was so extreme, test audiences were sickened. This UK cut still features some truly disturbing imagary and is not for the feint of heart...

As a Lakota, this western is required watching. They had some of the body parts on display at a museum in Colorado, I think, from this "battle." They turned scrotums into tobacco pouches and breast's into wallets. They tried to wipe us out, but we are still here. Thanks for the review.

My dad saw this when released and said women were running out of the pictures screaming and some were sick. When it aired on BBC many years later they cut most of the ending massacre out so i couldnt see what he was on about. I now got the German apparentley uncut DVD version ago......not the western my Mum would of liked, so she probably was one of them running out. Bless them both, miss them too. Great review mate great film.

Thanks so much, really appreciate you watching and commenting! Yeah I think without some of that violence the film losses its message and that's perhaps why its fallen out of conversation. It's not a perfect film by any stretch, but it's quite unique and its a huge shame its not more well known. 👏📽

    Hi Steven,
"Soldier Blue" i know about, but never got around to watching this western mainly due to Candice Bergen as i"m not much of a fan of her, but due it being a controversial one & Donald Pleasence is in it & we have a upcoming UK release from Studio Canal its one i"ll pick up.
Pleasence in a western always sounds odd but i did like wacky villain western role in "Will Penny" that he played if you haven"t seen that one with Charlton Heston.
Top notch review as always buddy.

Yes, that upcoming release looks very interesting, although if you want the 4K edition I think you only have a steelbook option... which is a shame as I'm not that fussed with on the artwork for it. Haven't seen Will Penny in many years mate, really need to revisit that one as I do enjoy a Heston flick. Soldier Blue is certainly worth a watch though buddy, I think you'd enjoy it for sure. 👏📽

This film is an epic western. This film changed my point of view on the Native Americans and the Plains Indian Wars. The massacre at the village shocked me.

Great review, hope it encourages people to check out this film. Actually saw it in the cinema in the early 80s on a rerelease. Would love to see the version that Nelson originally put out, but would imagine that all the elements are long gone. It does seem odd that the violence was cut because it sickened people which was exactly the point! Love the song too, I am old enough to remember hearing it on original release.

Thanks! Yeah I hope it does bring it to peoples attention. I have read about many of the cuts that were made and it does sound like they removed some extreme stuff, but as you say, its aim was to shock... thanks so much for checking out the video and commenting! Have a great weekend. 👏📽

This is a mixed bag of a film, Candice was very easy on the eyes back then. Danald Pleasence’s character is Isaac Q. Cumber in this movie 😆 I’ve not seen this in decades, I wouldn’t mind giving this another watch, nice one mate👍😃👍

Hahaha yes! What a name, and just another example of the odd vibe of this movie... maybe that's why many didn't warm to it... an odd fusion of light comedy, romance and bloody violence... I have a quite old DVD copy of it that is quite graphic but still obviously cut (I don't think an uncut version exists...?) Certainly worth revisiting mate. Have a great weekend! 📽👏

Can’t say I like this film. It’s of it’s time. Little big man is a similar film also from those days. What is good about it is showing the truth of what happened However it would be looked upon as explorative now. An important film of its time sadly overlooked now God knows why

I think in many ways, it is a difficult film to like... Bergen's character has a very 'stick it to the man' countercultural vibe that's odd in a western... the ending (obviously designed to shock) does jar after the films mixture of light comedy and romance, but yeah i don't think it deserves to be forgotten... thanks so much as always, have a great weekend. 👏📽
