Every human and animal on your farm is so worthy of admiration. But today I want to talk about Iwan. He is not flashy but he is an alpha man. He starts his hellos to us by speaking Portuguese (maybe Welch) love it. The pets know that he is the father he has a firm but loving way with them. They want to please him. He is straightforward so he says what he means. He is very proud of you but may not say it often. His hard working nature is exactly what the farm needs. His interest and growing knowledge of wine making and olive oil making is such good sense.
Isn't it funny how your natural environment Is what you wanted to move from but your memory just can't help itself to Bring into remeberence the wonder of it. Any place is going to have its good and bad. This is life. Makes you more grateful for the rain 🌧 I love the rain and never get tired of it.
a few mistakes kids .. do not put soil above the soil level of it in the pot.. .. dig up around it now and leave a puddle depth .. use straw or hay around the dug area not the tree itself .. leaving a reservoir for the water to soak well around your new plant .. leave the stone borders and levelling away from the tree .. during a drought you want to make sure that the roots do not get shocked as they settle into their new spot .. the most important part of the planting is the settling of the root system and a light tamping after planting with your feet around the tree and watering well and giving it a round small ditch is important ..you're newby tree planters .. take my tips and go with it .. been gardening for 50 plus years .. the water needs to get to the root system .. levelling is not good for a new tree plant .. or it will die .
Wendy Perrins,Queensland,Australia I love to see flowers in the field but I think it is a waste of water to grow them in a garden. I live in a tropical area so our weather is very hot and water is something that I keep for things we eat. I grow only flowers that I can dry for tea. Herbs, vegetables and salad we love to eat and are the only things I use our water on especially now we live on the Gold Coast and have a very small patch of land. It’s nice to see today that our parks are being used for community raised gardens for the people living in units. We are very lucky for the next 2 weeks that our government in giving us free water because we are expecting a lot of rain this summer and they want the dam lowered because of this. Finally they have realised that giving people free water for a short time is better than just letting the dam overflow into the sea. When we were on acreage I threw out seeds into the fields that would come up and be beautiful when it rained. You are very lucky to have wells on your land so you can use your own water and grow lovely flowers as well. I love your videos and your parents must love visiting.
Such a wonderful video with beautiful accompanying music. I love all the flowers in your garden. Those wagging tails are so adorable. Your drawing is gorgeous Carissa.
Yes, tree is planted too deep, it will struggle or die. Try putting pipe in the hole to water from the bottom. Encourages roots to grow down. Especially important in arrid climate.
Fab video once again, beautiful scenery and gentle music, your channel is a joy to watch! As for Eddy’s rescue, Iwan and Clarissa you are proper 🌟 🌟🌟 Take super care, Laura 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
I must have fallen asleep when I was watching you this morning as I missed so much! I chuckled at the shot of two tails wagging behind Iwan’s back😂. The bloom of the Tilia trees is lovely… so are the leaves😊
I know Iwan likes to do rock climbing, but only people with heart will go over at night to rescue a friend's dog (this includes you Carissa). Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You two are good people. BTW loved the clip of Iwan and the wagging dog tails (So cute) 😁
I finally caught up on your videos! I’ve absolutely enjoyed you and your pets. I’m so inspired to start a small garden next year and to finally get my Etsy shop going (I am a primarily pencil artist) . Thank you for your calm and inspirational videos! ❤ From Eastern Michigan USA.
Oh rain!!! Our garden is looking nice and green now we have had a couple of rainfalls. Love how quickly the ground responds to a bit of water by straight away sprouting lovely fresh grass. On the less good side of rain…weeds! Also sprouting very quickly but ahh I am loving the tease of cooler weather… when will not actually ARRIVE I wonder… it’s mid October! Your garden is indeed looking lovely 🌿🦋🐛
You all are an inspiration! What beautiful things you've accomplished in so little time on your land. My partner (I'm American and she's Portuguese) and I recently moved to the countryside about 40 minutes outside of Lisbon and your videos motivate us to continue to rehab our land, use our green thumbs, and enjoy the beauty surrounding us. If you're ever near Mafra, you have a place to stay :)
I just want to commend you guys on the fantastic dog rescue (Eddie the dog from Ken and Gina @ Portugal Farm Life)!! Great job!!! It’s another example of people joining and helping each other out in a new place you are all now part of the community!! Excellent!!!🎉
Petrichor…love that smell. Drought really makes one appreciate every drop of rain, doesn’t it? I live in the Mtns. Of California. We are experiencing drought,as well. When stacking wood a person could cross-cross the ends. We stack about 5 cords each fall. Another great video and a bonus tomorrow with OK Portugal. It’s so nice to see you get rain.
The part with Iwan holding the dogs both wagging their tales was great 🙂. Ken an Gina are fortunate to have you guys as friends and that Eddie wasn't injured in that fall! He's still a puppy so hopefully he'll mellow out. Iwan and Carissa are truly good people folks. Being that we watch you and OK PT, was surprised to learn this was Iwan's THIRD rescue of a dog from a well. IMO he's a very humble hero. Thank you Iwan! #unsubscribetheindieprojects
I find it intersting that you guys make an appearance on almost all of the few portugal youtube chanels that I follow. Mostly, it has to do something with climbing ;-) Well done rescuing that dog!
It's so refreshing to see so many people embracing an alternative life and focusing on something other than symbols of status. I've always been an "outlier" compared to everyone around me so it's nice to find others are out there. Loving the animals :)
Lovely video, I’m keeping an eye on the olives too, I’ve never preserved them, so interesting to hear your thoughts on them re the different methods. One bit of advice on tree planting, some trees are tough and will just survive anyway, but I always try to give them the best start. You dug a hole and filled it with water, good move as you have soaked the surrounding soil, however you only put compost in the hole when backfilling, what happens when you do this is that the tree roots are so happy in the compost hole, then don’t bother to venture beyond so you get a massive rootball that is not well anchored to the surrounding soil (bad news in high winds). So, always mix your compost with soil to get the root system in touch with the biology of your soil. Trees always drop down a bit, so plant them a tad high in the hole and I always add grit, stones, sand in the bottom of the hole to add drainage, it sounds weird in a dry climate, but when it does rain, your tree will be sitting in a soil bucket and might start to rot if it’s prolonged rain. Also if the water can drain away better, it can be held in the ground better for the tree roots to go find it, better anchoring your tree. Always water round the drip line of the canopy to encourage root spread and mulch, mulch mulch! Linden trees are wonderful, a great addition, great sketching the leaves and flowers, great shapes, and the tea makes you sleep like a well stacked log. All the best 🌱🌱🌱
We’re in south east Bulgaria, it cooled down quite suddenly in the last month, day and night temps are down, we’ve been able to get a lot of work done but the heating goes on at night, just got our fire wood delivered yesterday. The garden struggled in July-August, around 40°C most days. Now it is all but finished and looking pretty sad, I will be clearing most of it out this week, bringing peppers and aubergine plants indoors and taking tomato cuttings to get a head start next year. I realise we will need more shade protection, our water bill was insane and the plants still didn’t thrive, we will do better for our second season.
Hi, just find your channel, love it ❣❣❣, we leave in Swiss but, my family comes from Alentejo... I can almost smell it, wen you're going around ,and I miss it soooo much.... I know it's very hard work ,keep the good work.
Thank you for another lovely video. I love how wholesome your life is, and how much of it revolves around the land and your adorable pets. Happy belated birthday Carissa! ❤
It's so lovely to receive and stack a ton of wood for winter! I did it too last week in Alentejo and can't wait to start burning it down! Have a great week guys!
I have fond memories of the woodstove we used in the "good old days". It was a thermostatic wood stove. We filled it before bedtime and woke to a bed of hot coals, great start to a new fire. It kept the temp way in the back of the house to 65°f. Had to open a window in the front cause it was 80°-ish. This was 46 years ago in N.H. of USA. Very efficient. Love the double tail wags. Great planting of the trees for shade. Thank you Grampa and Gramma! So Ken of OK PORTUGAL. NOT someone i know of. I did see the logo though. Not sure how. Still love it.
Hmmm. I think maybe Ken and Gina of OK PORTUGAL are actually friends of Theo & Bee of Indie Projects (also Castelo Branco residents). If so, THAT is where i heard of them.
If you want stacks of firewood to be vertical lined up at the edges, stacking the 3 outermost logs perpendicular every second layer is stabilizing the stack and avoids 'log-slide'.
The garden looks beautiful, the wagging tails, adorable, loved the jump cut edit to the music at the beginning slick video on many levels. Sitting by my Essie Ironheart in my Welsh stone cottage listening to the rain 🌧 👌 🎶 😌
Helo Carissa ac Iwan. Writing from an island at the moment. Victoria is experiencing floods of epic proportions. We're OK at the moment but it will be interesting to see what happens with the water travels down stream. They are saying it is higher than 1974 levels. Many towns have been evacuated and they're saying if there is water around you it's too late to leave. Anyway, as always love watching you grow your little farm. I have 3 years until I retire and there are no plans at the moment to say where we will be living then! lol Keep safe - Siw
Have you thought of growing Topinamboor. Lovely flowers that look like small sunflowers and the tuber bulbs are delicius. They come back every year if you don't harvest them all. 🤗
Hi guys as always great vlog big thumbs up. I was listening to your comment on watering your garden and sympathise as we had the same issue! But now we do a gravity fed drip feed system from a 1000 litre tote which has made life really easy. It’s inexpensive and simple to do. If you need any info please just ask. Again keep up the vlogs my wife and I love watching we live in the Algarve on our off grid farm. Steve and Rachel
Just had a wood supply thought for when you need more: Maybe you can buy some from Cindy V or get a load in exchange for help with strimming or plive harvesting? Cindy's had a bunch of her pines chopped down and continues to take them down as she can to keep processionary caterpillars away from her animals... she seems to have s surplusof pine wood? 🤷🏻♀️ It'd help her move all those pine logs along, and you'd have a load of firewood or maybe even eucalyptus wood to build with?
Yes they are the seeds and they are just storing up for the winter. We as humans learned from what the others did such as ants to live our lives accordingly. This how plants also self propagate you will see next year amaranth growing in places you didn't plant. Sobieski say thank you ants!!! 🐜 🐜 🐜 🐜 🐜 🐜 🐜 🐜 🐜
Good afternoon, sweet couple from North Wales❤ I don't know if this would be useful information for you guys but I was told too put cinomon power around the plant's that the Ants are attacking as they don't like it also I noticed when you were staying your wood for winter that it was rolling around, you can still tack that way but what would make it safer is to put every so often a long lengths of log or wood stakes gotting out towards you and that will secure it better 🙏 I hope this may help.sending you all positive vibes and strength and love , Jacqueline 💋❤️🌹🥰 xxx
A tip for making your logs last longer. If you go to your local olive press and ask them if you can have a few sacks of last year's (remains) of the harvest. The olive press throws out the pips and skin and over the year it dries out into a breadcrumb texture if you open the vent on your stove and get the logs red then put a small shovel of the (olive breadcrumbs) on then with the vent still open get it red then turn it down your fire will last longer and the stove will get really hot. I was taught this on a Greek island by some old age pensioners and the owners of the press they gave us these olive (remains) for free. So it stretches out your logs, your logs and the olive (remains) need to be dry and be from last year so if you go now before this year's harvest with a few sacks and a shovel hopefully they will give you some. This only works on a closed stove as it does smell a bit when it's burning. Hope this tip helps it got us through a few winters.
love your whole set up! I also love Linden tea, tastes great. Just read that lots of people are allergic to the pollen, so hopefully nine of you has hay fever!
I believe that Linden trees are also known as Basswood which is a wood carvers go to wood for carving. There is a market for it when it gets to the point that you are pruning or shaping the larger sections of it that you should be able to take advantage of. Nice to see you making steady progress on your land, looking forward to seeing how your olive harvest goes. Be well.../B
Hola, tilia should do well in your area, but the species that looks best through hot, dry, weather is the silver linden- tilia tomentosa. That is also the fastest grower. Good luck.
Hello again. There looks like there's some nice buildings in the town. I was looking at the place where you got your water. With it big blocks of Stone and flush pointed masonry Beautiful.

Your dogs have me in fits sooo often!!
Re the woodpile, stack the alternate ends of the rows at 45 degrees to the rest of the wood and this will stop it collapsing
Thanks!
Wanted to say that too, but did not know how to without a drawing, thank you
Thanks !!! Mine drives me crazy !! I end staking vertical boards to keep things in

When I was small, the old people used to say that rain is on the way if ants were climbing to higher ground. And lo and behold, the rain came down.
Fingers crossed!!

This only works on a closed stove as it does smell a bit when it's burning. Hope this tip helps it got us through a few winters.
Good shout! I’ll see if they’ll let us have any

Beautiful flowers.❤
I believe that Linden trees are also known as Basswood which is a wood carvers go to wood for carving. There is a market for it when it gets to the point that you are pruning or shaping the larger sections of it that you should be able to take advantage of. Nice to see you making steady progress on your land, looking forward to seeing how your olive harvest goes. Be well.../B

Hola, tilia should do well in your area, but the species that looks best through hot, dry, weather is the silver linden- tilia tomentosa. That is also the fastest grower. Good luck.
