I've been in love with Tori's music since about 2006 or so. Mother is probably one of my all time favorites. Lil background in case this isn't covered(I'm like 10min in so far lol) Tori was the youngest person ever admitted to the Peabody Institute at age 5 but was asked to leave at age 11 for what she says was "musical insubordination" cuz she plays by ear so wouldn't read sheet music and preferred the rock music of the 70s over classical music. She really got her start performing in gay bars cuz they were the only ones that would let her perform at age 13. Her father chaperoned, who was a Methodist pastor. Tori is also such an influential musician for a lot of others, the way she pours out her heart and soul, the way the piano is an extension of herself. I've only recently, even after all these years, come to realize the true genius of her talent. Watch some videos of her playing with backing musicians. She really knows how to pick em! But the way she also orchestrates the music while playing and singing, signaling to the others is insane! And they are soooo good at building an environment and a mood to go with her original music. I'm not a metalhead but I've a lot of others say they are huge fans of her and she's metal in spirit. She's also collaborated with Maynard of Tool and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails(that's an interesting rabbit hole to go down. Courtney Love comes in to play), as well as the author Neil Gaiman. Some of my other favorite songs/others worth checking out are: Father Lucifer(check out the Storytellers where she gives a little background on it lol), Little Earthquakes(actually that whole album), Marianne, Blood Roses, Cruel, Spark, God, Cornflake Girl, The Waitress, Cloud on my Tongue, and Icicle(which the live version from Jay Leno inspired a scene in Bob's Burgers xD) But yeah, sorry for the rant, I'm just very very passionate about her music and love finding these kinds of videos 😅
Beauty Queen/Horses is a great example of being inside and hearing the mechanics of Tori's piano. You can hear the click and whir of the Lesley speaker being turned on. They recorded Tori inside of a box for the Boys for Pele album with the piano inside an Irish church. It sounds SO GOOD.
Her process was kinda wild during that era. You can find a behind the scenes documentary of sorts for Boys for Pele that's about 15 minutes long & she talks about showing her engineers a picture of a transparent brain & when she came back to try again she got the brain. 🤣

That's fascinating! We'll definitely check something from there out, I'm a big fan of unique recording techniques like that.
