    Full body works. I notice a huge difference when I moved away from split. I recuperate better, grow better, and each of my workouts I get stronger. I understand now that the body recuperates systematically and not just locally.

      I do a upper/lower split, four days a week in total, but i am thinking about going full body for my next training cycle. Do you squat every workout? Do you deadlift only once a week?

    • @Naturalhit
      @Naturalhit 8 років тому +1

      Jonatan Olsén
      I do it in cycles so this way you hit all of the bodyparts and I did this 3x a week. There's a good Utube video here on that.

      I have been doing full body too.
      - I train all major bodyparts.
      - 1 exercise per bodypart per workout.
      - 3 sets per body part
      - 6-10 reps
      - I use 3 second negative phases per rep.
      - Last set per exercise heavy and pretty much to failure.
      I have got 2 variations of full body workouts using different exercises and alternate them.
      I must say, the results are very good. But I found that I personally need 2 days rest to recover. I have found that strength and size are increasing & body fat percentage is dropping slightly too.
      I used to do splits with 6-8 sets, and ended up with minimal results and massive soreness leading to injury.

    All of the old bodybuilders say they never saw dianabol until early sixties. Leroy's gains came before that. I believe he was natural.

      Good point. I think that people get caught up on steroids being developed in the 30s and 40s... But forget that the process was quite long and expensive and so they weren't widely available until maybe 50s - early 60s

    You know what it is? The first thing I ever did was full body. Worked great! Made gains every workout! But I wanted so badly to get to the split training because the concept is so much more exciting. I tried it and went nowhere. So I kept going back and forth doing full body and getting gains and splits and getting nothing but really sore. I told myself EVERYTHING to convince myself splits are the way because that's what I WANTED to do. I researched and researched in an attempt to back up my own ideas. Deep down I KNOW full body is better. A lot better. But there's something so much more appealing about splits. Probably that honestly it's easier. It's more fun. You get to "Play bodybuilder". You get to train like the muscle guys in the videos. You get short bus pumps and so on, Oh, and you get to go to the gym every day. You don't have to take off the majority of the week. You can go to the gym six days a week and pump your soul out. That's my thought on that,

      fishywtf train 3 to 4 days per week.Back squat twice per week then front squat twice per week along with push press,barbell rows and bench press.Just keep weight high for 5reps but low volume.Even rich piana says heavy is way to go for natural bodies

    • @UP606754
      @UP606754 10 років тому +1

      fishywtf Day on day off. Squats (usualy front), OHP + Pullups on workout A and Deadlifts, Bench and rows in workout B.
      Obviously I put more effort into reps and sets and variations of these exercises. But that ^ is a summary of my plan.
      Make sure to regularly get in Squats, Deadlifts, Bench, OHP, rows, pullups and dips to hit your whole body and if you feel like it throw in some accessory stuff AFTER these main exercises in your workouts :) Manz gotta get his curls for the girls in somewhere.
      Just what I do :) Good luck

    Back when I was in college in VA in the mid-80s I worked out at a gym in Virginia Beach that was owned by Lynn Conkwright, one of the first major female bodybuilders (she was mixed-pairs champion with Mr. Olympia Chris Dickerson and placed as high as third in the Ms. Olympia). My buddy and I were doing a six day per week split routine and after a few months of initial gains our progress stalled and we were getting frustrated. I suggested that we ask Lynn - even though she was a girl (LOL) - if she could give us some advice. The first question she asked was "are you taking steroids?", to which we responded (truthfully), "No." She then asked how often we were training, and when we told her she shook her head and said, "way too much." I then asked her if we should cut it back to four days a week and she said that if we really are natural, then we should only be going three days per week with a full day of rest between workout. She told us that for years she had done a six day per week split but after a while she didn't gain any more mass, just a bit more definition and muscle separation.
    As more and more female bodybuilders were becoming very muscular through steroids - which she refused to do - the pressure was on for her to add more mass in order to stay competitive. It was then that she met a trainer who put her on a three day per week, high-intensity workout and within a year she put on 20 lbs of muscle - a tremendous gain, especially for a 5'2" female. She emphasized training the whole body to failure three times a week with each workout session lasting no more than 45 minutes. I used to watch this woman train and was there when she was preparing for the 1985 Ms. Olympia. I've never seen anyone train as intensely as her. I also watched her train a lot of natural bodybuilders (she tortured these poor guys) and they swore by her brief, high-intensity method and claimed that they made their best gains under her instruction. Long, split routines, as Ms. Conkwright told me years ago, are for juicers. Natural lifters cannot get away with that. Lift hard, brief, and not more than thrice weekly.

    • @chrono8233
      @chrono8233 8 років тому +1

      +markszarold Pretty much. I usually never go below 8 reps or above 15. Yea pretty basic. For chest: Incline and Flat bench, and one set decline just to hit all angles and then close grip bench, finish with Incline Fly's. For shoulders just side delt raises and overhead press and rear delts, Triceps is Cable press downs, And one arm dumbbell tricep extension behind the head and they also get worked from the close grip bench and all the bench pressing. Abs are just Weighted sit ups and hanging leg raises.

    5:30 why people just don't get is down to all the bad advice you read and see in muscles magazines and videos. Also, there's the fact that people simply like to train everyday concentrating on a couple of bodyparts with a plethora of exercises and pumping 'em up instead of the boring, monotonous full body programs that get boring the longer you do them.
    Stick with full body for 6 months and the results you will see will soon shift that boredom.

      Bob Peoples deadlifted 725lbs at 181lbs bodyweight and at the age of forty. This was back in the 1949. He trained on his farm, with limited training equipment, oh and he built... I mean craved his basement gym out of solid rock himself. Paul Anderson was his protege, if you don't know who Paul Anderson is you are NOT a powerlifter.
      That was no raps, no suits, and no roids. Only a lifting belt, btw that is 4x Bodyweight, what is your deadlift to weight ratio winner?
      What are Anabolic steroids? To quote medical text:
      "Anabolic steroids, technically known as anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), are drugs that are structurally related to the cyclic steroid ring system and have similar effects to testosterone in the body. They increase protein within cells, especially in skeletal muscles. Anabolic steroids also have androgenic and virilizing properties, including the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics such as the growth of the vocal cords, testicles (primary sexual characteristics) and body hair (secondary sexual characteristics)."
      So to put it bluntly it is Synthetic Hormones of what make a man a man. So you are basically are saying you are NOT man enough to lift the weight without it.
      I love Weightlifting, Powerlifting, and Olympiclifting. But Steroids and HGH are the worst thing that ever happened to all of sports.

    i have developed my own theory on why ppl dont want to gain strength... i think that ppl who are neither big nor strong want to get big, but are afraid of the big movements (presses, deads, squat) because they have always been embarrassed of how weak they are, so they wont do it... so its not that they dont want "strength" but rather they want a routine without the big movements... i realized this because i have a small friend who refused to do the big lifts and even talked shit about them rather than working to get better at them

    All what Leroy says in all his videos are spot on and, to be honest, apart from a few people like Lee Priest, I advise people to REALLY follow Leroys advice. I disagree with what this guy is saying about drugs in this vid completely. You DON'T need steroids to grow big, all it takes is common sense. I've been training for dead on a year now and my growth has been amazing to the extent that Dorian Yates (I train at his gym from time to time - I was born in the same city, Birmingham UK) is amazed with my body. I do full body workouts every day BUT only 3 sets / body part with only moderately heavy weight BEFORE I leave the house (in the morning), then blast my target muscle group in the gym. TBH the full body moderate workouts have DEFINITELY been more beneficial than gym training. It's core to how mu muscles have grown DRUG FREE. Please don't listen to this guy in this vid wrt steroids but full body workouts are ideal for progressive muscle growth. Also, watch ALL of Leroys videos (and AVOID rubbish videos where all people want to do is promote themselves and talk rubbish)... it's all common sense and if you follow it then you will improve much better than you are now.

    I also advocate full-body workouts every other day and have made gains after stagnating for many years. A little off topic but I still don't understand why most people are so fixated on continually getting stronger when they are not competing in lifting comps...?
    Sometimes I think it's because either they've give up on gaining mass and/or not possessing the genetics to be aesthetically desirable, or they simply want to out-do others. In the end not many really care about the numbers. And if you have a couple weeks off your numbers will drop. Not to mention the increased risks of not only injury, but the silent degeneration in your joints and discs that comes with using massive loads and full-range of motion another topic Leroy touches on. In the short run one may think they're winning but in the end will lose.

    I have been working out for about a year on a 4 day split (Chest+triceps, Legs, Back + Biceps, Shoulders + stomach) I really enjoy training like this but have started to plateau and am looking to give a full body workout a try for a couple of months. The reason why people "don't get it" is simply because it seems impossible to get all the exercises I am doing at the moment into a full body routine... I can't be in the gym for hours and the main lifts I want to do are as follows: Overhead barbell press + seated dumbbell press, incline bench, flat bench, dips, squats, leg extensions, seated and standing calf raises, pull ups, bent over rows, seated dumbbell curls, preacher curls, skull crushers, cable tricep extensions and forearm curls. That's 16 exercises to do three sets on each would be 48 sets...it seems far too daunting to me.

    • @m74d3
      @m74d3 9 років тому +3

      MrDavidhillman That's because you aren't supposed to do full body workouts that way. You're supposed to do something like this:Bench: 3 sets
      Chin Ups: 3 sets
      Military Press: 3 sets
      Rows: 3 sets
      Squats: 3 sets
      Done. Or you could even switch a few of those to 2 sets instead of 3, like chin ups and rows. If you want to switch to a full body workout, you're sacrificing workout variety and # of sets/exercises for frequency. You're not keeping the sets/workout variety and adding frequency, you're trading them in for greater frequency. You have to be willing to let a lot of those things go if you really want to switch to a full body. If you're doing nothing but the exercises I listed above, but you're progressing every week, your entire body will get bigger and stronger. You don't need 16 exercises and 48 sets for full body. It would virtually ensure failure, because you'd be overtraining profoundly.

    • @Daveyboyz1978
      @Daveyboyz1978 9 років тому

      Michael L Well I have started full body... gonna give it 3 months tops and see if I can put on strength. Every workout I am finishing with calves (cos I need to bring them up) and every workout I am starting with pull ups. I am doing 4 heavy compound movements and 5 isolation movements per workout... so that is a compromise. My focus is not to grow bigger but to put on strength (particularly with overhead press) and hitting the same exercises multiple times a week I am hoping I can break my plateau and gain strength. Thanks for advise I will tell you how it goes in a few months.

    • @Warsheeper
      @Warsheeper 9 років тому

      MrDavidhillman i train everyday 3 working sets on the main exercises always leaving 1-2 reps in the tank on assistance exercises 6-12 reps, 2 sets, day 1: squat, bench, chins + 2-3 optional exercises for arms, calves, abs, rear delts etcday 2: deads, militarypress, pullups + 2-3 optinal exercises for traps, calves, abs
      works great in adding strenght and size, went from overhead pressing 160lb for 6 reps to 185 for 5 reps in a month if you get your recovery in check, don't overdo it with the volume and it will work for you, you will most likely feel like shit the first few days maybe even 2 weeks since you are not used to that kind of training but it's awesome

    • @Daveyboyz1978
      @Daveyboyz1978 9 років тому

      Thanks for the info... I will see how I get on since my volume is higher but I am doing every other day. If this gets too much I might well think of doing every day and breaking it up a bit. The first two compound exercises take a lot out of me (3-4 sets each) but I can get through the 3rd and 4th compound movts which I do 3 sets each. The next 3 isolation movts either focus on triceps or biceps (alternate workouts) and are comparatively less taxing... then the two calve movements on the end are low energy really, they just hurt lots (burn like crazy but that's the nature of calves and forearms I find) I try not to fail on any set (I go until I think I will fail next rep) and will just try and get extra weight on the bar keeping reps in the 5-10 range.

    • @Warsheeper

      MrDavidhillman i go like this: first set till i can maybe get one more rep, second and third till i get maybe 2 more reps and i increase weight everytime but only by 1kg(2.2lb) but if you can do that everytime it would theoretically be 100-150kg per year which is unrealistic but your body has more chances to grow and to get stronger

      DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, to the best of my knowledge it shouldn't increase muscle growth any more than creatine does. I think it would only increase performance in the gym thus creating more tears on the muscle fibers. If you know more about it than me please fill me in on the details.

      Sebastien Roux it suppresses cortisol which better faster recovery, muscle growth happens during resting, sleeping, good rest times, deep sleep better muscle gain. Well rested means more intensity in the gym.

    I understand your stance on steroids, i feel that people should be able to do as they please. But i disagree with the idea that all athletes should take steroids. If nobody took steroids athletes would be on just as level a playing field as if everyone did. People give up their good health in order to play some sports better. Although in your case as a power lifter or in the case of a bodybuilder i think it's probably essential. I just don't agree with it's use in other sports, such as baseball, or hockey.

    Jason como'n. You do not believe in natural? Sure, if you want to be the best you have to take something, but if you aren't well above the average when you're natural you won't be best on gear either (unless the gear would have much higher impact on your performance then on the others). If you do not squat 400, bench 315 and deadlift 500 naturally after 1 year of training, then going on gear will leave you in the middle field with screwed up health.
    I would go on gear if I would decide to go pro, but I would decide to go pro only if I would outlift 99.999% of the population without training for it for 10 years.

      archinuk417 Hi, I understand, I'm not saying he shouldn't do powerlifting, I'm saying you should not jump on juice, it is not worth it unless you're naturally very strong. What Jason is saying is that he doesn't believe in powerlifting without juice and I think it's wrong. The sport should help you getting healthy not the opposite. In powerlifiting you compete in the first place with yourself and you do not need drugs for that

    • @Vicious242
      @Vicious242 10 років тому

      its very rare that any 1 within the first year of training will be benchin 315 squatin 400 and deadlifitng 500 without drugs. the standards are actually 225bench 315squat 405 deadlift naturally within the first year of lifting and even then that is still above average

    • @SKarea51
      @SKarea51 10 років тому

      Vicious242 I agree with you, but I do not think an average guy should juice, that's my point. You screw up your heath for getting where strong guys can get without the drugs, what's the point? I don't want to figure out that I'm actually weak after juicing for 3 years, that's why I think a man should do proper assessment whether he has potential or not and I just called some stats (we can argue about them) that would give you a quick estimate of your chances (clearly if guys on juice can squat 800 pounds, I do not think they lifted less than 400 without them). Of course, if somebody proves, that somebody can get 3x stronger on a jucie than when natural, whereas an average person gets only 2x stronger, there is a hope for weak lifters to reach unknown territory...

    • @SKarea51
      @SKarea51 10 років тому

      What I meant is that i would go on steroids only if i can achieve those within a year of intensive training as a newbie. My stats were 315/240/380, where I focused mainly on squat and didn't really do much of deadlifts. I stay natural, cause my natural strength is not where it should be on elite level and gear won't fix it. You need to realise that you're probably able to double your guest year stats with gear and 10 years if training so not not worth it if you check what the to level does. You should stay natural and keep progressing...

    Dood Jay Cutler, Phil Heath, Kai Greene they all do 4/5/6 or more way splits and they're HYOOGE so that's the way to train even M&F says so and they got a massive shredded guy on the cover every month!

  • @boxerfencer
    @boxerfencer 9 років тому

    They experimented? That suggests they tried both splits and fullbody. I've seen many of Colbert's videos, but he never says that he tried splits himself, only that he did better than OTHERS did on splits. This logic is faulty, and compares apples to oranges. We don't know how he may have done had he been on splits himself, compared to himself being on fullbody. My dad is one of these old time bbs (he also taught what they called physical culture), and what I can get our of him is that they trained according to what we today would call "instinct". Fullbody? Sort of, sure, but instinct, which probably meant 2 bodyparts min. per session. He is mind boggled by trainees using someone else's routine. He would tell you you're crazy to think you can use someone else's routine, let alone write something for someone else, but I'm getting off topic. As for 3 days a week, Colbert himself says that the gyms were gender segregated in his area. Men were allowed in only 3 days a week, Thus, fullbody 3x/week is pretty well the the only logical conclusion, when you're restricted access to half the week. Ultimately, access restriction means that 3 days a week fullbody is not a tried and tested side by side to splits before dugs came into regular use. We can also gleen that those that flourished on fullbody routines, could very well just be genetic outliers. Perhaps, everyone else that would have done well on splits, never flourished because they didn't have many places where to train.

  • @Cenzurat
    @Cenzurat 9 років тому +1

    i think full body workouts 3 times a week are very good but not as good as training every body part 2 times a week but much harder, depends on ur genetics specifically how fast you can recover, if its hard then full body is probably best, i got a 3 day split i do 2 times a week that works well, but its my limit, if i overtrain sometimes i do full body for a week to have more rest time

      +Me Catalin You dont know how a training like this is build. You got, Heavy,Medium and Light days and you still need to work on progressive overload, and periodisation. Yet you have way much power for the "Big Three" lifts. Which allows you to overload your muscles more effectivly.. And in terms of mass building, the better you become at them, the less assistantswork like Overhead Press, Biceps Curls and stuff is needed.. When we talk about a contest prep, that may be a different matter...
