    You can tell Henry really fell in love with being a gangster when everyone came to see his release. That kind of sense of community is powerful, especially for a young kid like him at the time.

      Except that that scene is utter BS. As if a load of known mobsters would come to a court to congratulate a teenager who sells cigarettes for them. Gangsters obviously groom youngsters but it is a lot more subtle than this. I can't tell if it is for cinematic effect or if Scorcese took Henry Hill's stories too seriously. Its a dumb scene.

    • @ICU-812
      @ICU-812 Рік тому +143

      @@the_local_bigamist He was doing shorthand storytelling for a movie. He doesn't have the time to show Henry Hill going around getting congratulated by every mobster he runs errands for, saying "Good job kid. Here's a present for keeping your mouth shut."
      So instead he shows a big welcome committee after he gets let out where they all pat him on the back. It accomplishes the main goal of the scene: Show how the mobster life could appeal to a kid. How that sense of brotherhood and comradery is a powerful attractor to young men.

    There's so much more love and support in this scene between Henry and the Mob bosses than in any scene between Henry and his own family. It's easy to see how a young man would make the wrong choice and fall in with the gangsters, because the gangster gave him the fatherly affection that he couldn't get anywhere else.

    • @agarcia2511

      Yes and no. His dad may have been a prick but he really tried hard to show his kids the value of being a working class person. Morals, all that. It just never appealed to Henry. Period.
      Yeah growing up poor makes any excuse to get money and nice stuff cause at the moment you’re desperate. But most, by from my experience, grow up wanting to be honest, even if the odds are stacked.

    They don’t mention it in the film, but it was around this time Henry wanted out of the Mob. He joined the army but got dishonorably discharged and joined back up with the Mob. He tried to leave one more time after the Air France robbery. But the Mob just followed him to his business

    • @buckaroobanzai7063
      @buckaroobanzai7063 6 років тому +388

      He got kicked out of the army for committing crime. He wanted out of the mob but didn't want to stop be a criminal. He got kicked out of witness protection for committing crimes as well. He just didn't like the violence of the mob. He was scared of those psychopaths. I can't understand why people admire the mafia. They'd kill you and your loved ones if it made them wealthy. At least Henry understood that.

    In real life in 1959, Henry Hill got collared while attempting to buy tires with a stolen credit card, not for selling untaxed cigarettes as in the movie. To get him away from the gangsters, Hill was sent to the Army in 1960. Even while in uniform, he still was hustling and maintained his underworld contacts until his enlistment ended in 1963. He actually did not meet Tommy Devito/DeSimone until the late 1960s.
