    Excellent walk through. Saved my dad's old "sawed off" pump which is legal knowing how to measure properly. Thank you for this clear, well made reference.

    Always a useful topic to cover! Some rifles are just simpler to measure than others.

    I have not seen MidwayUSA ad on youtube in a few months. I see a placeholders and hear some audio, for a few seconds; but never does a whole ad play. Just wanted to let you know, in case you expected ads to play.

    I have always wondered why the chamber is considered part of the barrel length on rifles and semi autos but not on a wheel gun. Is it because the chambers on the wheel gun are not physically attached to the barrel? It always seemed to me you weren't getting an accurate barrel measurement when measuring to the breech face.

    Ok, how about a revolver rifle. Such as a Taurus Circuit Judge. Back of the cylinder or front? The reason I ask is I have one. And it is 16”. But while out shooting. It slid and hit the muzzle against a rock. I need to cut an inch off to clean it up.

    I recently read on a manufacturer's website that Pistol Caliber Carbine barrels are not measured in the standard fashion, and that it is important to know the proper way to accurately measure them, but, they did not provide instructions how to do so. My Google search brought me here, but there is no specific indication, with the possible exception of that magazine-fed rifle, to suggest the proper method. Help?

    Thanks for the info in this, I was wondering whether it was from the breech face or where the end of the case is.

    How silly how they determine the barrel length while the cartridge length and action can lengthen the firearm. Makes you wonder what justification they have to restrict a firearm if it's too short.

    Is bullet run ever considered in barrel length? eg: a 24" barrel 30-06 vs 24" barrel .22. The .22 has more true bullet run than the 30-06 do to case length and is that why the bullet manufacturers use 26" test barrels.

    So essentially, accepting revolvers, just put any firearm fully into battery, and stick a dowel down the barrel, and measure. I guess this could be a pain for AR-15s that have a muzzle device that isn't permanently attached, but doesn't _easily_ come off

    • @nickknight8065
      @nickknight8065 8 місяців тому

      Measure the outside length of your muzzle device and subtract. If the muzzle device is pinned and welded, it can be included in the overall length.

  • @the_chomper

    that "rule" about measureing down the bore is not actually written in law. its barrel length not bore length

    How do you deal with fractional inch measurements? Do you round up, round down, round to the closest 1/4 inch?

      @@thomasmack3195 Don't round, if push came to shove and you're under you can be charged. It's likely that if it's really close they wouldn't care, but why go to prison over an 1/4th of an inch?

    • @EmoFox9
      @EmoFox9 6 років тому +5

      not fully correct good buddy, if your flash hider/compensator/muzzle device is removable, you screw that off first, then measure from closed bolt to end of barrel as seen in video

  • @DrFillyBlunt
    @DrFillyBlunt 4 роки тому

    So you're essentially saying as far as the wooden dowel will go is the barrel length?

    so all firearms are measures from the breech face except for revolvers ... would you happen to know why they are measured differently?

    • @ElijahDecker
      @ElijahDecker 8 років тому +3

      because on revolvers the barrel ends at the cylinder

  • @JustAnOldMan

    Why does a semi-auto pistol include the chamber, but a revolver does not. Either one should have to minus the chamber length on a semi-auto, or the cylinder should count as barrel length on a revolver

    It's so stupid that a revolver pistol doesn't include the cartridge length/cylinder, but the semi-auto pistol does.

    • @Laotzu.Goldbug
      @Laotzu.Goldbug 6 років тому +1

      Z.A.P. Squad it kind of makes sense though. In a semi-auto, the chamber is an integral part of the barrel, it's literally the same piece of metal period for a revolver it's not. The cylinder is constantly changing, and it's certainly not the same piece of metal

    Much safer to measure barrle lenght to measure from where barrel meets the receiver This allows no margin for error Also note a barrle longer then 16 inchs Rifle barrle so make it a bit over 16 inchd pleade

    • @Jonj57
      @Jonj57 Рік тому

      It might be safer from a "cop doesn't know any better" standpoint, but the ATF official docs say breach face to end of muzzle. Keep an extra half inch over that so there's no change of someone reading a tape wrong on rounding.

    Wish they would get rif of this SBR/SBS BS. It's a waste of time considering how easy it is to get things like stocks for pistols. In other countries there's no hassle when you put a stock or suppressor on a Glock, though that might be because of the hassle you went just to get the Glock in the first place.
