    I’ve been in my business here in Taylor Eddies Auto Detail & Upholstery since 93. I do all the work by myself too. So I have customers scheduled by appointment. When I feel I have too much on my calendar, I don’t take no more work in till I get caught up , then I call customers to let them know I’m ready to start scheduling my work. Yes , I’ve learned the last two years to enjoy my life and not work myself to the grave like a lot of my friends did so young. I just turned 58. I have some minor health issues I need to take care of myself. One thing I’m bad about is I never take a deposit from people. I don’t want to leave people hanging if something were to happen to me. I’ll do a couple of auto Detail in between to keep cash flow.

      Hello Eddie, More power to ya! Deposits cover materials and the time I spent to complete a job before I get paid by the balance when done. Also in that rare case when they don't pick up the item and pay the balance. I learned long ago by getting burned for my material cost and labor. I tell my customers that "The customary deposit is half down" and everyone understands. We can't live in fear of the future. I already died once. Now I'm ten years old. We need to live. @@oldschoolautoupholstery I didn’t mean to sound sarcastic about the deposits. I understand. You doing the right thing. I don’t do full interior restoration on cars. Mainly truck bench seats, lots of repairs on edge of seats that wear. I do mostly most of days auto detailing. I also do leather work like wallets, cell phone cases, knife sheaths. I don’t do furniture, or Boats. A cushion or two maybe. Thank you for your outstanding videos! I really appreciate that . Eddie Perez

    Truer words were never spoken. I don’t do upholstery for my living. I have a small tool and die company. Scheduling is a big deal. It’s sometimes difficult to realize that we work to live, not live to work. Keep up the great work, buddy! I’m learning a lot, that I hope to be able to apply to my own project. Excellent advice all around!
    You might think running a one-man shop is easy and for the most part, it is not so bad. But it is very hard to turn away customers when you get backed up. Especially repeat customers. You must be honest with them before you take on their project. Time is ALL we have, but we never know how much. Great lesson!

    Hi, I watch all your videos. They are very helpful. I was wondering if you could cover how to charge a customer for supplies you use. Say I bought a 50ft spool of cording and I paid .25 cents a foot. How much do I charge the customer?. 25 50,75 cents a foot? Thanks for your help! Mark.

    • @davidbnsmessex.5953
      @davidbnsmessex.5953 11 місяців тому +2

      Simple , all you have to do is divide the TOTAL cost by the length ( say 100 mtrs ) total cost will also include a bit extra for profit , then add a small percentage each year for inflation .

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  11 місяців тому +1

      Hello David, Or simply throw out a ridiculously high number to begin with. If the customer agrees, the profit will thank you. Please keep liking and watching!

      Hello Mark, Thanks for hanging in there with me. I hope you watched, ua-cam.com/video/WOuzM5UPqM4/v-deo.html It is not about percentages, It's all about what the market will bear. If you told them $8 a foot and they agreed with a smile, why would you charge them 50 cents? Often I have quoted ridiculously high prices and the customer responded like he got a really good deal making me ask myself that I didn't charge him enough. Different people have a different comfort value of money. In business we need to keep the shareholders happy. (Don't let your family starve) You can always start high, but you can't raise the price after the fact. Please keep liking and watching!

    Great video! I’m starting to get several car and truck interior jobs lined up. I find that I am very slow just learning the business.
    One thing I’m having trouble with is my Juki 2810 I bought after watching your video on it. I started out with a ADLER 467.
    I like how high the Juki foot will lift and the long arm.
    But after one month and only 3 projects it started braking the thread and frayed it partly. I changed the needle, loosened the top stitch tension but then it would not pull the bottom stitch correctly.
    If I tighten the top stitch so the bottom is about correct, it will start to brake tge top stitch.
    Do you work and adjust on your own machine? If you have any tips please make a video. Thank you . Scott Smith with Scott’s Auto & Marine LLC custom upholstery
