Never Get Bored Watching You Sam Create Cool Projects
Thanks!
Is it just me, looking forward to each new episode like my favourite cliff hanger tv show?
Hello Sam, I been watch you now for a few months and enjoying your work and explaining on everything you been doing. My wife and I go to Gatlinburg every year in Oct and love Tenn. I was trying to see if there was any mountains in the background, HA! HA!. Keep up the good work!!.
Nice explanation, that scaffolding saved the day and you are having great weather to work outside.
Great job Sam! I never get bored watching someone building something.
It sure can be more entertaining. :)
You explain it all so exact and clearly!! Good job!
Thank you!
Sam, once again you are getting things done. Thanks for taking the time to explain some of tge hows and whys thungs are done like they sgould be. You are awesome.
I'm happy to share and help out! :) Thanks!
Dude your awesome I am a big boy too and love watching you do things I used to do. Keep up the great work and content
Thanks! Will do!
Great job on the shop, it's coming together nicely. When you said you already had the ties and finally getting to use them, I was like yes held on to something and remembered you had them
In north Texas use the word tornado rather than hurricane for the barkets. Normally the only thing we get from hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast is heavy rain and a little wind and maybe a tornado or two from it.
Very instructive. I will find it very interesting to see how you put the trusses up without damaging the hurricane ties. I'm used to 24' or 36' trusses and flipping them by hand maybe you have something else in mind. That's why we always put them on after. Glad you have nice weather for this. Trying to do this in rain or snow would not be fun.
I hope I do not regret mounting them ahead of time. Most of my research of raising trusses solo was to do it this way. We shall soon find out! :)
Gonna be a great workshop!
Awesome job, u need to teach at votech school
Hi Sam, I’m watching from the UK & I hope to build myself a small summer house in 2024, I’ve learned so much watching you. I only discovered your channel a few days ago, so I have watched you build your small workshop, & now this. I am much more confident now that I can create my own building from scratch.
Like all the details of your build, perfection is in the details. Great job!
Im building a 18x32 tiny home. Its good to see the size when you got your walls up. Think i made a good choice in size. Also happy your son is out there with ya. More kids should know this trade.
Very cool! That will be a great sized home. My mother visited the other day and reminded me this workshop is larger than the first home we grew up in.. me and my two other brothers! :)
@@Samcraftcom crazy how big the buildings get as time goes on! Look forward to more videos!
😂amazing 👏🏿 can't stop watching. Good work 🎉🎉
You make it seem seemless!! 💕💕🎶🎶
Never knew the hurricane brackets could be installed on the outside. I always though they were put on the inside of the building. Nice to have options.
The exterior install is the preferred location, but when done as a retrofit or repair placing them inside is better than nothing. :) I installed them on the inside of my current workshop when I built it, not knowing better then.
@@SamcraftcomDo the screws in the hurricane clip affect the exterior siding? It seems that the screw head would push the siding out. Thanks in advance.
The scaffold is more comfortable on the feet than standing on the rungs of a ladder, when we moved I got rid of my scaffold because I didn't think I would need it anymore, I could kick myself😬
Great vidio with much good information.
Do you ever wonder how they built things before power tools? Can you imagine sawing and nailing by hand!
Great job
Great explanation @
that paslode seems to be the cats ass, you sure are putting it to the test. Can't imagine doing all that nailing by hand
Hahaha Sam, this has just proved a point that ALL men make to their better half's. When we are asked " why don't you throw that away, your not going to use it!". And we reply back " I'm going to be needing it at some point!". The roofing brackets maybe about 6 years old but you still used them and not only did you have a chance to use them but you nodoubt have managed to save a few dollars in the process. Sam what is the plan for the roofing are you doing a flat roof or a slight pitch which alway's looks way better!!!. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
As much as I would like to take credit, I think I just got really lucky since we were cleaning up a storage area a few days before and I found them. :)
The roof will be a gable pitch roof made up of engineered trusses.
Should have just built the double top plate into the wall when you had it on the floor building it and also you could have put the hurricane straps on at the same time. That would have eliminated all that overhead work and scaffold work until the Raptors at least anyway
Looking good Sam!
Winter is coming 😄
Sam I am enjoying you building your new shop.
Thanks 👍I'm sure enjoying it too!
Love watching you build your work shop
Hmm. How does the external wall sheathing lay flat with those simpson strong tie hex screws protruding out of the hurricane tie? Also the internal wall sheathing? Wont they make things bulge?
Coming right along. Soon you will be in it.
Your shop is looking great 😊
Thank you!
lookin good Sam 💖
Nice job Brother !!
Nice job, clearly explained, thanks 😊
Excellent work fella. A very enjoyable series
When nailing the top plate on, I like to angle the nails. One nail angled to the left, the other angled to the right. Or to the inside and outside. Having the nails at opposing angles helps to lock the 2 boards together much better than just nails straight in.
Super job, looking good. Thanks for bringing us along
Great tip!
Sam it’s soooo awesome when you finally get to use those stored items! Plus it saves you a lot of $$ now if I could just find a way to get you to San Diego and build my shop 😂
It really was one of those VERY RARE instances that worked out. :) I usually forget or cannot find the items until the job is done. Sand Diego huh.... that's quite a run! :)
Lookin’ good! Well done!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!! 😁
Great job Sam !thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing again mate. Really enjoying. 😊
Glad to hear it!
Great job 🇬🇧😊
Thank you!
Well done Sam! Enjoyed!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work brother.
Much appreciated!
Awesome. Looking good. Scaffold is handy.
It sure is!!! I originally bought it when I built my current workshop here about two years ago thinking I would use it then. I never did, but kept it around. I'm so glad I did now!
@@Samcraftcom yea I remember when you got it and built that shop.
🎉 SQUEELS!!! 🎉
Wtg y'all! ✌️💝🙏🤜
That's called a tie plate cause it ties the walls together.
suggestion to put a 2x2 around top plate for a nail/ screw anchor place for ceiling panels Sheetrock or other paneling also i believe called California corners also for paneling screws at corner locations eliminate floating edges
You're exactly right on the California corners - they act as drywall nailers inside the walls. The ceiling nailers will be installed later on, but only on the gable end walls. Anything put in place on the truss bearing (side) walls would need to be cut and fit between each truss to overhang into the room.
GIANT SKATE BOARD LOL
😊
ok you are good you were able to make one video out setting the top plate will check in with you in a month see how far you get. you should have the truss's on and maybe the fasica by then.
👍👍👍
Sam, you got some plans you could share on this build?
The straps shoud be on the in side of the walls
At least you didn't have to pay today's prices for you Simpson Strong Ties. I knew it paid to hold on to extra supplies.
That's a good point! It would have been cool (or sad, maybe) if one had a price sticker on it. :)
I just noticed that you don't have gutters on your carport. You should put them on the side facing your shop, otherwise the water running off will splash against the side of the shop, go through any seams/gaps and rot the walls.
It's on the list. As it is built right now it's "not compatible" for gutters to be added. However, I've come up with a solution and way to add them properly.
Great work Sam ❤❤❤
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Your tools were you get them from please tell me
😅 I'm always buying things for projects and my husband puts them away where, according to him, I could find them easily.
Yep, he forgets where he put them, can't figure out where they are.
So I buy more because I'm ready to build stuff now. Yep, I'm a woman who does all of the building, remodeling etc. He's a city boy who grew up with parents that hired people for everything. Me I'm country grew up learning to fix everything.
I digress, he usually finds my parts days, weeks, years later and I put them away so I know where they are for my next project. 😊
👍👏👏👏👏
Does your county require a building permit and bldg. inspections as you progress. It appears you are following code.
What drill are you using? I am buying an older house and need to do some repairs. Going to buy some tools first myself.
All of my cordless tools are Craftsman brand and their v20 models. I would love to upgrade to Milwaukee someday, but the Craftsman tools are affordable and do the job for my needs. :)
💖💖👍👍💖💖😄😄
Sam, these engineered rafters… did you design them and are you building them yourself, or did you order them? Asking for a friend. 😉
I ordered them from a truss company. I didn't want to risk the 20' wide span to my on creation. :) Plus the cost of the trusses really wasn't that bad compared to the raw materials costs.
Are you gonna build a hose next or you are happy with your mobile home
Doing this large of a building project has shown us what all we can do. :) We're planning an addition to our home. We need another bedroom and would love a family room / larger living room as "stage one". :)
I have looked for an answer to this, and maybe if you have time you might give it some thought. Putting up walls on a slab where the slab extends 10: past the wall with no way to move walls closer to edge. How do you keep rain water from coming under or through those pressure treated plates. Thanks.
the top of any concrete that butts up against the exterior walls needs to be lower than the surface of the main area.
Here's my non-expert opinion of how I would address the issue if the concrete and wall placement cannot be moved. I would treat the wall-to-slab-seam similar to how windows are flashed. I would put a wide waterproofing membrane over the wall and down to the slab and extend it as far as possible -- all as one continuous piece from wall to slab. I would use something like "GCP Applied Technologies Bituthene 4000 Waterproof Membrane". If you're framing the walls on top of the concrete, don't forget your treated wood bottom plate and your sill sealant (foam strip and also a few beads of Big Stretch caulking). Think of your wall and slab as a home's basement wall and foundation and waterproof them the same way.
@@Samcraftcom Thanks I will give that a go.
Sa,m are you using engineered roof trusses like in your drawing you showed prviously
Yes! They were very affordable and enabled me to know my roof structure was "right" and not worry about a 20 foot wide open span.
Sorry but what screws are you using for those brackets?
Simpson SD Connector Screws
👍❤❤❤❤🖐
If I were you and I was going to be flipping the trusses alone, I would take off the hurricane clips and put in a 2x4 stop at each truss space then when they were flipped up put a temporary 2x4 across the trusses to keep them upright and stable, then remove the 2x4 stops and attach the trusses. Doing trusses alone is not fun. Best wishes. And watch the points.
shouldn't the hurricane ties be on the inside
Thinking the same thing
I was wondering the same thing and also would put the trusses on first and then install the ties.
The recommended location of the roof to top plate hurricane ties is on the exterior side of the wall (same side as the structural sheathing).
HOW DO YOU MEASURE HOW LONG YOUR TRUSSES HAVE TO BE?
For engineered trusses, the company you go through will ask you questions and design them for you. :) The want to know the following information: exterior wall width, desired overhang, roof pitch, truss spacing, and if you want drop gable end trusses or otherwise. I talked to several for quotes and they all were very accommodating and happy to answer my questions.
One downside of the simpson screws in that particular application is interference with exterior sheathing. Not a huge deal but it will bow out a bit up top.
That is true, but it will also be covered/hidden by the soffit assuming a standard soffit install vs. exposed rafter tails.
@@Samcraftcom exactly
I've always seen the hurricane brackets installed on the inside of the wall not the outside. I guess your soffit will hide it just an interesting choice. looking good though won't be long before you get to move in.
Question, where's the gang?
Love y'all but you are stretching it out to far
?
Jimmy for thoses of us without thr exp. You have it is helpful ..explaining why and how...
lol democrat lumber...it grows faster so they can tax the forest, the cutters, the shippers, the millers, the shippers again, the middle men, the vendor...and then you...for stuff warped as hell.
Was that a skid of solar shingles at about 10 minutes?
