This video was extremely helpful, tyvm. I was trying to figure out how to run my chat for streaming on all virtual desktops as i toggle between them on a multi monitor setup and I was not aware of the option to run a specific app on all desktops. This solved my issue, so a big thx.
Thanks a lot. I've been using this feature for a little while now since I've been working from home and only have one ultra wide screen. My main complaint is that for dragging windows from one desktop to another you always have to go into task view which adds an extra step. Would be an improvement if one could either drag any window to the edge and have it automatically go to the next desktop, or right-click on the top edge of any window and have the option to drag to the next desktop within the menu.
This feature is great for people that are conducting multi tasks at once, to assist with focus on a single task. It does NOT remove the need for a multi-monitor setup if you are stuck to smaller (ie 24-27") monitors and still need the real estate for having multiple windows/app/programs/excel sheets open.
@@HelpCloud Explain how to read data off of one screen, that you are inputting onto another screen? Or doing copy paste? This would add way too many extra clicks, switching between the desktops.

Hey man, great video, but coming from a Mac, I want to have open lets say Outlook in one desktop and Chrome in another and lets say I am on the Outlook desktop and I click Chrome, I want Windows to automatically switch to the desktop that has Chrome. Does Windows have that ability?
I did a similar test. I had Chrome open in one, Windows Photos in another. If I was on the desktop with Chrome, then opened Photos, it swapped to the desktop where photos was already open. So yes, it does look like it will swap to the desktop where the program is already open.

I gave it a try for a week and had to give it up. First off, Microsoft Project refuses to abide by the rules - it appears on all desktop whether you want it or not. When you switch desktops it always comes to the fore so you have to alt-tab to find the apps you want. This is particularly bad because I tend to keep it spread across both of my large monitors. Then, and this is the problem with this video, I couldn't find a compelling reason to do it. This video never actually addresses the question of "Why You should be Using them". If someone can make a compelling case I'd love to hear it, but it's impossible for me to find a clear separation of applications and I ended up just making switching between apps harder. Maybe someone else can spell it out for me.

I usually don't use more than a couple of desktops, but I have used as many as eight, and switch between them regularly as I make progress on multiple projects.
It was about time isn't it! I hope they expand the functions of this, I know they had desktop renaming in the works, it would be nice to separate icons, pins etc.
Does using multiple desktops require or use more ram?
Yes it does. The amount used will depend on what you have open on the desktop. Having the virtual desktop itself is minimal.
No
Can you make a duplicate desktop? Like so I would still have my work email, chat, and other programs that I need while working on different projects (even within some of the same programs? I don't want to miss out on emails and chats while on another virtual desktop and my projects are within the same software but can be a lot of documents and clutter my screens.
Just so I understand the scenario more, why wouldn't you just work on one desktop if you still need all the other software/programs?
This is a very helpful video
Glad you think so!!
I don't really get the point in this feature, when you still have to tab between the desktops. You might as well just tab between the apps. Am I missing something?
Helps keep things more organized. You can have one desktop with windows for things like personal email accounts, Facebook etc. The other can be work related windows or apps.
@@HelpCloud Thanks for the reply. Yeah as I started playing around with it I realised that it actually can be helpful and now I’m gonna start using lol cause my ocd was hating having so many windows open and them being all unrelated despite having two monitors. Thanks for the video.
Ty for video. I really needed this function !
This is the best thing since sliced bread❗ Just brilliant & used EVERY day👍👍
I hope they continue to build on it.
@@HelpCloud Working on Win10 'behind the scenes' is & will be a constant effort to enhance, improve and bring a good & appealing OS to End Users.
Thanks! Very well explained. In case the watcher happens to be very hurried: 1:25
You bet!
Absolutely loving the Utah Jazz Hat.
Thank ya!
This helped. It was very thorough too. I used windows in the past, but I used to use a mac book b4 my current computer. I feel like learning about the control + win key & using the arrow keys to move back and forth is an added bonus. :)
Keyboard shortcuts are great!
Thank you so much! I accidentally ran into a virual desktop now knowing what was going on (I use a laptop, no ultrawide or triple monior) and this video helped me realise what happened
Awesome! Great feature, I hope they add more stuff to them
I've found a 3 screen setup to be ideal. It's only very rarely not enough.
3 screens is great if you have the need/space.
Could a remote employee remote into one of those desktops while you're working on your main desktop?
They can't. These virtual desktops are very limited right now.
If I delete the files in the 2nd virtual desktop will the files still be stored in the first monitors
Yes, they share them sadly.
@@HelpCloud oof
I have an issue where my windows (on the taskbar) on the virtual desktops appear open for other desktops (i.e. I'm on desktop 1 but google chrome and word open in desktop 2 would be open in the taskbar. I can't open a new one into desktop 1 just by clicking on it because it's open in desktop 2). Other computers I've used don't have this issue and would only show the windows open in the current virtual desktop. Is this something to fix in an update or some option I can turn on/off. Thanks.
What versions are the Windows.
@@HelpCloud It doesn't work for me, instead, it opens a new Outlook or Chrome on the new Desktop too and then I have Outlook repeated in all the Desktops that I click the Outlook icon on instead of if switching to the desktop where I first opened it.
I found the setting that does it now. You go to Settings and then Multitasking, in the virtual desktop settings, select All Desktops on both instances and voila!
@@carela20 You are Good
Some feedback for you as a first time viewer of your channel.
As far as explaining how to use it, this video was fine (bit long though). But I'm immediately googling WHY I would want to do this and have other questions too. e.g. do these remain after reboot, are all desktops 'frozen' when not in use or do they still consume RAM etc. Ultimately I don't feel you really dug into WHY this is useful, aside from wanting a more minimalist physical setup. Cheers.
Thanks for the tips!
@@HelpCloud no worries and incidentally I found another video which provided answers to these questions BUT I found his delivery and the video in general pretty dry. So much preferred yours on that front. 👍
I appreciate the comments, I will be sure to make sure I touch more on points like this. Thanks again!
why on windows 10 pro 1909 version i cannot see button to virtual desktop ?? and when i press ALT + TAB that nothing i can see for add new desktop
Try ctrl + windows key + tab
Thank you joe
Is it possible to manage two separate UA-cam accounts using 'virtual desktops'? So basically two different YT accounts. My first is account from 2011 and second one (current) from 2018ish. Or am I confusing my own question with 'Virtual Machine'?
You could open each UA-cam channel in its own tab and place on individual virtual desktops.
If I use the virtual desktop while using a time tracker, is the screenshot gonna show that im using multiple desktops? or just the actual desktop where the time tracker was opened?
Screenshots are independent for each desktop
how do i dissable the Virtual Desktop setting? i want my old alt tab back!
Love this feature with a single Monitor or three.
This was the reason I loved and move to Mac, now I can come back to Windows again using a MacBook Pro ;)
Dual boot?
How abouth gnu-linux?
this is helpful for my exams
Glad it helped!
Amazing video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been looking up what the use of this feature is. I can't find anything that makes it useful. It's just a more complicated way to alt+tab.
Alt tab just allows you to swap to a different window or app on the same screen. This feature allows you to move those windows or apps to another "desktop" to organize them better.
@@HelpCloud Sure you can organize a little better but how would this replace a multi-monitor setup? You’re essentially alt tabbing with extra steps
Thanks for the video
You bet!
Thank you. Very helpful
But how do I change the wallpaper of the second desktop and leave the first desktop with another image
You can't they both share the same wallpaper.
actually I was looking for some kind of method/software to display and control the content of my laptops as a window on my desktop pc screen.
I am not sure what you mean.
@@HelpCloud have you used a Windows resource called "remote desktop" to control another PC/laptop? It makes you operate an actual PC in a window through the network. But I want to avoid the network configurations, so I'm wondering if there is any KVM switch or software that can made me control a PC as window in Windows 10.
Awesome video. Great job!
Thank you very much!
Wow, wow, wow! this is a simple but such a genius idea! I feel so sad for the monitor business...
Having multiple monitors is still viable. I hope with Windows 11 they take this feature more serious.
@@HelpCloud I know, it was more of a joke! I perfectly understand that, when you're editing video for example, you still do need a bigger screen. I noticed a problem with the keyboard within the hour of using WVD. The keyboard became out of sync and buttons weren't quite typing what was being input, I tried to play with keyboard settings here and there in vain. The issue was resolved immediately after I closed all the opened desktops. Have you experience the same kind of issues? Thank you
would be a better feature if you could layout files on it
Is it possible to have different desktops with different wallpapers and different shortcuts for programs ... i want a desktop for work with office shortcuts, a gaming desktops with game shortcuts .. sorry for bad english
As of right now, there is not. Hopefully something they will add in the a future update. I would love something like that.
How about creating users for each situation?
Can we drag and drop the position of those virtual desktops?
Doesn't look like we can yet, Just tried with no success.
It's kinda cool but a feature I'd love to see is being able to window and pin a desktop so I can have one per monitor.
I think with Windows 11 we will see more of that type of stuff.
Awesome vid! Also what's the outro song called?
At work I have to monitor email all day. Will I get email notifications from (desktop 1) if I’m working in Excel on (desktop 2)? Thanks!
As far as I know, the desktop notifications are all synced regardless of desktop.
HelpCloud thanks
There is a problem that if I click the taskbar icon that is not on the current desktop, it will auto-switch to another desktop .
i want to see different icons ... is that possible ?
As of right now, no :(
@@HelpCloud thanks for info
Apparently, a background desktop will still steal focus to itself. I was hoping it would be like a world to itself. However, the minimized browser in the active desktop doing this _seems_ to be keeping quiet better than in Win 7, so far.
I hope they keep expanding on these, it make things way easier.
I still don't understand why I need a virtual desktops when I can simply switch between programmes/different windows with tab+alt though it kind of get messy when there are like 10 things open :D . I'd love to have an new empty desktop where I can have different shortcuts.
This was a feature we had all hope they would expand on. Instead we got Windows 11
Is it possible to see the desktop at the same time?
I am not sure what you mean.
@@HelpCloud Sharing the screen between the desktops, so you have two desktops on the same screen. Basically like two windows side by side
I'm bummed! I thought you could save desktop shortcuts in these virtual desktops.. Would be nice to have a desktop with all the shortcuts to productive programs, and then switch to a desktop with game shortcuts.
I agree, I am keeping an eye out for features like this!
Hey, started using the extra desktops using this method, however I've noticed that the extra desktop i created seems to be a little sluggish? Like things opening slower, even basic functions like maximizing a folder. Is this my issue? or an issue anyone you/anyone else noticed from using these virtual desktops?
Do you have a graphics card?
@@HelpCloud never mind! It miraculously solved the issue itself.
Why can't I have a wallpaper for each desktop?
I don't know, hopefully they will add something new!
Because it is a fake virtual desktop
@1:36 states "press win logo and the cat/ tab / tag (?) at the same time", but he doesn't define or show which tab /tag /cat /tag he is referencing. (I have no idea) W/o that essential info, his whole lxr is wertless
Do you have more then one "tab"?
I have accidentally made 86 desktops and I try to delete them but it gets really laggy can I fix it

how do I watch a tutorial on youtube and practice at the same time with these virtual desktops without an extra monitor
They arn't designed for that unless you flip to one desktop then flip back.

hello i have a question . i want to have 2 desktops with diffirent icons . i mean the first one only icons of designe softwears like photoshop ...etc and in the second desktop other icons like word exel ...etc . how to do it ?
Great video
Thanks you!
I still wasn't able to get the answer to the value of these virtual desktops!
Its in there.
From the time of this video, we had planned on seeing more features as time went on. With the announcement of Windows 11, and as time went on, that is not likely.
@@HelpCloud What feature would have made the case for this? I can't see it. I'm actually kind of amazed these things have appeared in Mac and Linux. I figured there had to be an amazing utility to all of this but it's escaping me.
@@DanielASchaeffer Personally, I like being able to separate my windows onto the different virtual desktops. Such as social media management on 1 desktop, while the others may contain something like a coding workspace. This works great for those that may not have the space to use multiple monitors.
