I love this song. It was the first song I ever heard of Metallica back in '89 and it's still my favorite, too bad they hardly ever play it. Thanx 4 sharing ,greetings from Buin, Chile.
Love how James lol'd the lyrics at the end of the second verse :) I do that too sometimes. Could to see that I relate to my hero on more levels than just guitar playing :P Please Metallica, play this on your next American tour.
Of all the live versions of this song on youtube, this one is my favorite. It's probably just the camera quality, but they sound so loose and heavy. Combined with the picture quality, it is just a really mean, sick clip. Hat tip to whoever recorded this.

The funniest thing here is that you can hear the bass perfectly... just on that fuckin' record they had the courage to get jason's bass impossible to hear... however thanks for this video! \m/
I keep hoping they’ll play it one last time for us at their 40th Anniversary show coming up in about 18 months. It’s crazy that it’s been 30 years since they’ve played this...but I can get how this would be tough to sing live. But, James’ voice has been amazing in recent months...I think he could belt it out. I think the real issue is that this was a song that Newstead brought to the group and James just plain doesn’t want to give him the satisfaction. Hopefully, they’ll give us just one modern performance of it to make the fans happy...and finally shut us all up. I could totally live with that.
It's incredible the forces o the music industry, 1989 metallica in its prime was getting its ass kicked by G N'R, Aerosmith etc, (in the charts and tours). Now, today some many awesome bands are getting their asses kicked by an obviously devalued metallica. the crazy dynamics of the music industry...

My favorite album is AJFa , just learned play this song (only rhytm), but there are so many riffs and changes that I easily forgot it + its not very easy one to play. I also like to play And Justice for All (song) very much cause its so fuckin creative. I believe playin those songs truly makes you progress as musician. I dont like rhytm of One (quick E major Distorted riffs), cause those combination sound so messed and chaotic, there is simply to much open E notes and thats why sound not very structured but I do love to play One solo and acoustic lyrics part. Eye of The Beholder is one of the most "tight" and structured, orderly songs of Metallica. Rhytm is just perfect everything is totaly right on its place, just opposite of chaotic One. ( and also much much better and more advanced riffs than those in One) Sorry just had to share those guitar maniac thoughts !
+Zoran Kamenicki Eye of the Beholder is one of the easiest songs in the whole album (if not the easiest one). Yet, you can feel pure evil and fury on those riffs, it's like a mortar barrage.
To Metallica: Play Eye of the beholder instead of Nothing else matters. I heared that song 12422423421349 times on radio, tv, internet. That's enough for me for now :) I also suggest Blietzkrieg- fucking kicking ass riff in begin of song ;p Metallica is immortal! \m/
@TheUnforgiven1995 Just to inform you , Metallica Does different kinds of music such as Thrash / Heavy / Speed Metal and Hard rock , sometimes they mix 'em in one song . there isnt any mistake .. u just dont know how to appreciate a masterpiece
@Blackdragon52k that is not a real quote.. in his universe, though, that's the only explanation.. "interestingly", they still played parts of this on the black album tour, and they play most the songs on the album (this, frayed ends and to live is to die being the exceptions) live nowadays, spread on diffferent gigs.. AND Dave Mustaine is alive and well.. not exactly waterproof :p
CaptainWhirlwind The problem is, this song has really deep vocals, really contrary to James' vocals now. If anything, they would have to tune higher, or he could sing an octave higher, but that pretty much ruins the song
is it me or can others here see how it looks like James is having to concentrate really hard to play and sing this at the same time...seems that all comments I've ever heard about the song being hard for him can be seen here in this video as evidence. Still a great fucking performance though
Eye of the Beholder is such a great song and ...And Justice for All is a their best album IMO.
I completely agree...yet sadly I can't see them playing "and justice for all in its entirety" anytime soon...shame really...
Michael Bish Guys, in 2018 well selebrate 30 years AJFA so let's hope there will be a tour about this special anniversary! :)
Emanuil Valkov we can but hope brother...
Hardest song to play live
Go listen to 'Ride The Lightning'. At least it has an actual bass.
3:15 "I fucked up the lyrics yeah!!", you gotta love papa Het
Primarily this is the reason he didn't wanna sing it again,,,
Eye oft the beerholder
Eye of his stance

Back in 89, these guys were simply invincible!!! No band could surpass them!!! Fuck Yeah Metallica!!
whoever caught this,thank you
James doesn't play the guitar. He commands it to play its self
hahaha great!!! hard to play this one and sing at the same time.
He's the greatest ever
They changed so many things forever in the 80's.
