How to make biochar out of bugs and sawmill waste. OK, this may not be the best way to do it, but it’s the more fun way. The sawmill waste comes from my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. It comes from milling Douglas fir into lumber. I start with a top lit fire. Mostly because there are some people who find those to be annoying. I create and find a creative way to extinguish the biochar. Biochar is believed to have some amazing soil building qualities. In some cases, biochar does appear to have some soil benefits. but I think some people get a little carried away with the claims about it.  But we are making it anyway, mostly to get rid of these bugs that are killing the Douglas fir trees.

Well, glad i tuned in, I lernt some new phrases and words today, had the satisfaction of watch invasive bugs become history and enjoyed listening to and old diesel purr as they were intended to do. No stinking def fluid, no regens, no emissions crap. Just raw power 😁
As I was editing the video, when I got to editing the part of listening to the old kitty purr, it was tempting to cut out the rest and just show that. If I had any idea it was so videogenic, I might have brought it out a long time ago.
@@WilsonForestLands I've been working on and running Diesel's back when they had pony motors to start them. That tractor purring is a lost sound. About the same as an electric Harley......to the, well you get the point.

It’s a good in between size for a lot of things, but a bit big for what I’ve been doing a lot of here lately. That’s mostly why it hasn’t made a showing on the channel.

The tractor shouldn’t be weeping, It’s the one that gets all the screen time. It took me over two years to finally put the cat on camera.

Because the last couple years most of the things I’ve been doing in the woods is salvaging scattered relatively small trees. Not really practical for this size of machine. It would be extreme overkill for anything I’ve been doing. I mostly just brought it out this time to give it a little exercise since I haven’t been using it.

Top lighting also helps slow the burn rate a bit, so you don't end up with a huge raging pile of burning wood! That's great for a big party, but not so much for a controlled burn.

I’m kinda new to that idea of starting stuff from the top. Someone suggested it for my woodstove when I fire it up. Been doing it now for a couple of years, and for that small application, it works really well for me. Don’t know why, it just does. And I guess that’s enough science for me

The deer will be upset if you move the sawmill.😁 On the positive side, if sawdust mtn was up there you might have a longer snowboarding run and more trees to run into for comedic affect.
I think the deer would just follow it up the hill and be fine with it there. They might even prefer it because there would be more shade. I didn’t even think about the snowboard run, that would make it much better up there. Minus this whole running into trees thing, I don’t think I would enjoy that as much as the viewers would.

Yes that can be a problem. It’s why I mixed them up with dirt and spread them around. If they were concentrated in a larger pocket together that can be a dangerous situation.
Now you have yourself a serious log skidding machine! Probably had it hidden away there all of the time, now we know how you get those really tuff logs out.
Yeah it’s been sitting there a long time. Most of the small scattered trees I’ve been dealing with the last couple years are more appropriately sized for the smaller tractor. But it’s there if I need it.

I have actually had that longer than I have had the channel. The reason I got one that size was thinking I could use it as a fire cat. I never actually got around to doing it though. But the option is there.
The hippie science says until water is used on burning wood it's just charcoal. Charcoal will not last 1000's of years.
Water expands the cells of the wood which give room for the soil microbes to do their thing. Then it's biochar. It holds the soil microbes and bacteria instead of them being washed away. They feed the plants, no need for fertilizers.
This is a not enough coffee explanation, best I can do. 😊

I think they find charcoal dating back thousands of years but I think it depends on the conditions. That’s why I say hundreds or thousands of years. I was part of a biochar study a few years ago. But I’ve heard so many things about biochar and charcoal, the one thing I do know is it’s black and it’s messy. 😁
Biochar for 'hippie science' (terra preta do indio) needs the grain structure of wood to host soil microbes. You can't get that from bugs or with the ashes of an open fire.
Cone fire would work, or any way of cooking the wood around 800°F to 900 °F without letting air get to the wood. Your way is just soot, ashes and char.
But good effort helping keep down the pests and showing folks how to burn wood with just some matches and a tractor.
That’s what I have heard. But I’ve also heard some so-called biochar experts say this works well too. I’ve looked into it a lot over the years and what I have learned for sure is it is black and messy.

The world is full of people whose confidence in what they say runs ahead of our confidence in what they say.
The residue of a trash fire or clearing fire is almost never biochar, as I understand it.
No pyrolysis, no biochar.
Not sealed off from oxygen while it cooks, not pyrolysis.
There are different grades of biochar, I'm sure you've heard, depending on wood used, cooking time and level of heat.
I don't need to tell you biochar is porous and takes up compost tea during activation to make terra preta, so it hosts nitrogen-fixers and forms the equivalent of drainage tile when well-mixed (about 25%) with soil, to reduce need for irrigation and risk of flood while extending soil fertility. Plain wood ash changes soil pH, and might add some potash, which is good, too.
While both can have benefits, they're not magic.
My grandparents when there was wartime rationing used a pyrolysis cooker to get producer gas and biodiesel to run farm equipment, with some bonus black liquor for protecting fenceposts from rot. I suppose they could have been hippies.
There are some sixty commercial uses for biochar, from activated filters to aggregate for high R-value concrete, but it'd take a big milling operation to really make it a going concern, as you only get 15%-35% dry weight as output.
I'm just a guy who designs hand tools for market gardeners, so I can't really advise on an operation of your scale.
People can use Google Scholar for the academic angle. North America's got some biochar businesses, but the only government-backed certificate yet is from the European Biochar Organization, which I know nothing about.

Something I noticed about your top lit fire… the flames didn’t get 30 or 40 feet in the air, like mine did when I lit a pile about that big from the bottom!!!
The wood was also partly green and slow burning, that may have kept the flame length down.
Was the Cat. your grands too?
I liked the info you gave on your last burn piles. (paraphrase) "To hot of a fire will kill everything in the soil".
No I bought the Cat myself years ago.
I remembered you this morning. I went and burn the leftovers from pruning one of my very small vineyards (under 6.000 squared feet, about eleven times less in m2). There were both the pile from last year and, on top of it, all from this year. This year's was still green, some had even sprouted not realizig they had no root to be fed from, but the weather has been really humid these last few months.
So much so that it took me a while to get it going. I had even gone before to a different property and got some eucalyptus bark, as if anythig is too good to be kindling, therefore too bad, as it burns way too quickly. That bark burnt and since the leftovers were really wet, I had to use some firelighter. But, hey, I did it from above as you say and it got going. Mind you, it was intertwined with grass and kind of hard to move with my fork, but it finally burnt down.
P.S. I didn't have that machine so I could put the fire out, I just waited until it was not a danger anymore, as it was sorrounded by wet grass and, anyway, if I had such a machine, the property is not big enough to maneouvre ir inside.
With material like that it might be hard to get a fire going no matter how you do it. But as long as you got it done.

Heat does not rise, however warmed air does. Providing of course that the warmed air is warmer than the surrounding air.
And so does the carbon monoxide, methane and hydrogen that actually burn and cause flame. But it’s not worth arguing with him about it. Even if he did add try twigs to to top of the fire to keep it going 😁👍🏼
I put twigs on top of the fire. It would be hard to put the dry twigs underneath the fire without lifting up the fire and putting the fire out.
Really? One would think it was easy. You put them on before lighting. Course then they wouldn’t be above the fire. Well I guess they would if you lit the bottom like you’re supposed to. 😁😉👍🏼
I had kindling on the bottom and the top and around the sides. The best of all worlds. All well spaced enough to get plenty of oxygen.

I haven’t actually been doing enough in the woods lately to justify help. I have quite a few viewers asking me if I need help. I like keeping things simple and not having the complications that come with other people and liability.
Could I visit and provide free labour or help just for the experience?
I have people asking me that all the time. I am still not sure what to do about all the people who want to come help. I have some liability concerns to straighten out before I ever consider that.

I had a hippy friend who bought an enormous Teepee and moved into the woods. Thought he was so smart until it got cold and he discovered there is a difference between radiant heat and convectional heat ("I have to stay up all night feeding the fire, all the heat goes right out the hole in the top of the teepee").......Of course, this jewel also believed Al Gore, so we know that critical thinking wasn't part of his repertoire!

@@WilsonForestLands it’s a really nice machine. I’ve seen them worked hard and take tons of abuse. Try to keep running and hold it as long as you can. Almost non replaceable now.
Biochar??????? All you did was make lye for soap. Way too much oxygen and ashes.
You have the perfect set up for making biochar.
1.Tee-pee the wood like you did , cover 3/4 of the way up with earth , light from the top, let it get to burning real good, then cover the whole thing with a good mound of soil.
2. Fill up that steel pot with as much wood as it will hold . Light from the top. Let it get going real good. Cover the top with a huge mound of soil. This method might be a pain to clear out the pot but it is definitely the most efficient and the most safe. Scattering burning embers through the woods is not the most safe way to extinguish a fire.
Some people consider charcoal to be biochar. I believe lye is made from ash, not charcoal. There was a lot more charcoal than ash. I was part of a Biochar study a few years ago. It determined that top lit fires retained a lot of charcoal without turning it into ash if you extinguish it soon enough. Because of the way they burn, the charcoal is shielded from oxygen much of the burn. No this is not an efficient way to make it. Yes a lot of it does get consumed. But a lot of it doesn’t. For someone who doesn’t want to go through a bunch of process, this is a way to make charcoal. It’s the way I make charcoal for grilling. Minus the dozer and the dirt part. They were not spread around the forest. They were spread around then buried in wet to muddy mineral soil. A safe distance from any forest material. Much less dangerous than everyone who is burning debris in the forest right now. The wet season is a safe time to do that when it’s too wet here for wildfires.
@@WilsonForestLands Charcoal and biochar are the same thing. One you throw in the dirt. The other you cook with. Look, that dozer makes the prospect of you making biochar into a very profitable business and you have to do minimal work. Just dig a huge cone shape hole , do the wood and lighting it just as you did before. The tee-pee ensures the wood falls in on itself , pushing burnt wood to the bottom and fresh wood on top. Lighting from the top robs the bottom of the cone of oxygen. All the air stays at the top to feed the fire. So the charcoal is actually formed at the bottom of cone since it drops to the bottom. Again, once its burning at a nice rate just cover everything with a mound of soil. You can leave the char there until you need it.

i know here you do need a fire permit to burn and all fire bands are in place right now I did hear that the fire department was a fine handout on fire million bucks that that people he was that one started it all last year with the wildfire season we had he did not ever have a permit previous year or on this year the firefights did say the police was not gentle on him when they arrested him he is being sentenced on 15 of this month more like will spend a year or more in jail for being stupid fire permits are easy to get and they are free too here
I have a notice of operation with the department of forestry for doing forest work. With that I can burn here until fire season starts. Usually in May or the first of June.
