Can we talk about how op Cherno was though? It’s a Mark 1 jeager, one of the first jeagers ever built and it took 2 category 4 Kaiju surprise attacking and ganging up on it for it to finally fall. It takes the term “old is gold” to a new level.
Not to mention if it had been fighting on land there's a good chance it could have at least taken out one of them. It really was at a disadvantage fighting in the deep ocean like that especially against a really nimble Kaiju much less against two category 4s.
Very true. It held out incredibly well, I'm fairly certain it could hve 1v1'd either Otachi or Leatherback without much issue. It was already giving Otachi the business, and Leatherback only took it down because of a weakened hull due to Otachi's acid and the element of surprise.
I think Otachi was especifically made by the aliens, which would mean that it doesn't really have a category, since it wasn't to attack the earth, but Cherno Alpha.
@@silvergolden6387 both of them were made specifically as anti-Jaeger Kaiju. Leatherback had an EMP pulse on his back, specifically to disable Jaegers, and Otachi's acid was designed to puncture and weaken heavy armor.

to concretely answer this, while the average depth of the deep sea is 3.7 kilometers, the ocean is actually relatively shallow near land, with average depth of the continental shelf is supposed to be 150 meters-- it gets quite a bit shallower the closer you are to shore. This scene takes place in Hong Kong, where Victoria Harbour only has an average depth of 12 meters. Deep enough for a massive cargo ship, but also shallow enough for mechs to walk. The main reason Jaegers in pacific rim exist is to lift them above sea-level, allowing the upper body to wrestle with Kaiju (and not just get swallowed up like a boat would). It’s very likely that’s what they were actually doing. The Kaiju at this point were assumed to just be giant animals following their instincts, and Yeager pilots were likely taught to use intimidation tactics. Similar to how gorillas beat their chest to intimidate other gorillas.
Same their deaths were so horrible and brutal to watch at, not to mention that Cherno Alpha is piloted by a Married couple, Husband and Wife then we have the crimson typhoon piloted by triplet siblings. It’s like a family piloting the Jaegers.
This movie was actually very powerful. These pairs literally become one with their soulmate. They throw themselves into the fight not only for themselves, but to also protect the one they love by their side. Their love is what stands between evil and all of humanity. Cherno breaks my heart especially. These two people must have felt a love beyond understanding, because on top of a soul connection, they shared their physical lives as lovers. Marriage. Children. I think the fighting style of their jeager reflects that. It is the primal, raw, terrible strength that overtakes you when your family is in danger. It is so human. I cried when they died.
The reason Gypsy won was because plot armor, and its pilots knew of the Kaijus abilities before suiting up. Keep in mind Hong Kong was Gypsy's first deployment in years, after being rebuilt. Its not like the other Jaegers, which were tirelessly fighting Kaiju before the movie started, meaning the Precursors more knowledge of how to counter them compared to Gypsy. Anyway, here's the breakdown on why Otachi and Leatherback were perfect counters to Cherno, Crimson, and Striker: Otachi's acid is perfect against Cherno, which was a slow, heavily armored Jaeger. The acid negates slow-ass Cherno's armor, but keep in mind it was dodgeable for a Mk3 like Gypsy. Otachi's strong clawed tail (capable of knocking down Cherno with a swipe) was great against Crimson. Crimson has two right arms, at the cost of each arm being thinner and therefore weaker. This means a hard swipe from the right to Crimson is hard to defend against, and we see Otachi exploit this. Finally, Crimson's Conn-pod is small and shaped so that its easy to crush. Once again, Gypsy countered this with coolant, something the Precursors had no knowledge of. For Striker, Leatherback's EMP is self-explanatory. Once Striker is shut-down its over. Again, Gypsy happened to be nuclear, and unlike Cherno there was nothing to directly stop it. Yeah I think too deeply into this, I need friends.
The only problem I have with this explanation is that from what I remember, the precursors should know about Gypsy weakness I don’t know, don’t remember much other than than the jeagers beating the kajiu which let’s be honest, it’s most likely what everyone came for
@@nightoffuntimes840 well they though gypsy is already out.. decommissioned for 5 years.. it just returned.. so the precurssors have no new knowledge to its new capabilities.
Chills every time… and they’re jumping in to help their friends despite being from different nations and backgrounds. Humanity has no borders when banding together in the face of armageddon. Such an insane scene.
I love the little details in this movie. At 00:05 you can see which thrusters Crimson uses for more momentum to swings his arms. Every detail to the weight of the Jaegers, sound, small mechanical movements etc. makes this movie great. The second movie on the other hand is Dumpster Juice.
the hold position pretty much killed them because cherno alpha was leather back hard counter since he was moved also by nuclear power so he couldn't be emp'ed and he's hella tank even against a monster as muscular as leatherback bcuz even with melted head it was still able to handle 3 big punches with the pilots surviving (until they we're drowned and the reactor exploded) so if striker eureka and crimson typhoon we're ganging up on otachi cherno could've killed leatherback making they win the fight since striker eureka is pretty much a otachi hard counter bcuz his cannons can outrange the acid spit.
I find out that Pacific Rim Jaeger pilot have special relationship like: Striker Eureka: Son and Father Gipsy Danger 1st: Brothers Gipsy Danger 2nd: potential lovers Crimson Typhoon: Triplet brothers Cherno Alpha: Husband and Wife
Earlier in the movie, we hear how Typhoon has successfully defended Hong Kong several times, and Cherno has held a Siberian perimeter wall for six years. Then this happens in three minutes cause one egotistical scientist disobeyed orders.
Free Bird hah yeah, what he said. At first, the aliens adapt to conventional weaponry, then resistance to nuclear fire, then eventually 1st gen Jaegers, then 2nd gen, etc.. it's an arms race
Yeah you don't even see either of them kill one. They just bring out their fancy weapons and still get rekt. I guess typhoon and cherno weren't build for category 4's
The Kaiju that attacked were designed to specifically deal with Crimson, Cherno and Striker. Acid for the armor, third tail with claw and knowledge of Crimsons technique and the EMP for dealing with Striker.
That moment in the theater when the enormous Leatherback came out of water, we were all like" okay it's over now, good bye Cherno" ...so sad but trully impressive
I find it sad that we didn't get to see much of Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon. Their designs were super cool and they had a lot of promise. It would have been nice to see their full capabilities.
Just look at this CGI, it's wonderful. I'm surprised they managed to make it look real anyways, just compare it to other movies with much more budget and this one still looks better.
0:34 I love this scene not because Cherno is my favorite but because of the way they portray it, you can hear the loud heavy footsteps and FEEL the impact of the punches and hear them too. When Cherno does its piston attack you can see the the red part on his elbow wind up when the pistons pull back Amazing detail
@VultureDroid The orange sword robot thing was literally using buildings like a wall and jump off of them. If it had any realism or physics for that matter, the sheer weight of the jaeger would collapse the building.
Those sounds come from Cherno's 4 Vents on it's chest. It's purpose was to actually To intimidate the Kaiju and sometimes alert it that a giant mech is gonna punch it to the death
I like how you can actually feel the experience and skill of each of both Crimson Typhoon and Yuri Alpha. Typhoon is fast and flexible, able to outmaneuver bigger Ksiju's, but was up against an opponent with an equally flexible tail that could move in it's Blindspot and take advantage of Typhoons weakness, it's armor(or lack thereof). Meanwhile Yuri Alpha was barbaric and strong, built with enough armor to even make an M1A2 Abrams blush. Unfortunately though, it also went against an opponent who had the skills to deal with heavy armor, acid capable of melting right through it. The only reason these two lost there I feel like was because that thing (can't remember it's name) had every tool needed to put down each of them by exposing their own weakness, plus they ganged up on Alpha too so that helps.
Hollywood trying to make a quick buck off the likes of the first film but not realizing they destroyed the franchise of the both films by making a second film when there should have be only 1. I haven't seen uprising nor do I tend to watch it.
1:56 is a little moment that underscores the difference between the two films. Here, the Hansons really work their legs in the treads of the cockpit, and it matches the movement of the gigantic robot trying to accelerate through thigh-deep water. In Uprising, the Pilots run like they're sprinting on a treadmill, and it just doesn't match the movement of their Jaegers.
simple answer. cash grab. Uprising toys literally flowed out as soon the movie was released. I should know. I build gunpla and some model kits. it was already available in the online market even the physical stores as soon the movie was out.
@Chonghan L The blood contaminates the oceans, they showed in the beginning when the people wearing suits were in the ocean. The reason why they were using blades in the breach was because they were gonna close the breach so there wouldn't be any more kaijus to fight.
The blades were supposed to be at high temperatures/speed automatically when they make the cut cauterize the wound although there is a chance that if it is a vertical or deep attack the wound will release even blood though in a few amounts
@@tuskactiv7050 Yeah that's the idea for all the blades, but even then blades made a lot of blood spill so they were meant to be a last resort weapon to minimize blood spillage in the oceans.
Well, in the last movies godzilla fight against other giant monsters, not against people. I think that if godzilla was in "Pacific rim" it could save humanity.
I always found the concept of the 'Drift' interesting, and in this particular context - somewhat horrifying. Imagine you're a Jaeger pilot drift-linked with someone you essentially love (be that lover, friend, or family) and in essence, you can feel and read each other's minds. Imagine you're one of Crimson's or Cherno's pilots, and you literally feel the fear of your partners right before they're crushed, right before they drown. It makes Raleigh's line all the more haunting, when he said he quite literally felt his brother die all those years ago.
If you think about it, Otachi was actually so strong since it takes several punches from typhoon, and then cherno, and then a few more from eureka but still gives gipsy danger a tough fight
I love that the only reason why Crimson Typhoon swung their blades quickly was because they had thrusters on their back that allowed them to counteract the massive amount of momentum from such a large machine swinging like that. If only Uprising had that tiny little detail, I may have been a bit more lenient on their quicker movements.
This scene is the most original, most jaw dropping fight scene ever. When that 2nd Kaiju jumps out of the water...if gave everyone in the theater chills
As much as I would've loved to see more of Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon, their destruction/deaths serve a narrative purpose to show how quick things can go south in theses kaiju/Jäger battles and how they're getting outmoded and outmatched by the ever stronger kaiju
It also subtly shows something interesting as pointed on another comment, the scientist that mind merged with the remains of the Kaiju brain not only discovered more about the monsters but also accidentally allowed the aliens that created the Kaiju to learn more about the jaegers and how to efficiently dispatch of them
@@devilbringer1102 because they read the mind of someone that has deep knowledge of the shatter dome, hah clever. It would explain why the last kaijus they sent to patrol the breach were so hulking and powerful.
@@Nikolai1939 It also made me realize how the category 5 Kaiju was more of a desperation move by the aliens considering it was unleashed minutes if not hours after the scientist and his colleague mind merged with the baby orachi to obtain the last bit of info they needed to learn how to access the breach
everything about Cherno was badass.....all the way from the intro music to the hammerfist to their jaeger and their suits......damnnnn why wasnt pacific rim 2 like this
I will always adore how the studio animated the Jagers; the fluid movements of Typhoon and the rigid and mechanical movements of Cherno due to the generation difference between later Jagers versus the MK1s
Cherno Alpha wasn’t designed with any escape pods. With the head in the torso, it would be difficult to include. So for 6 years these pilots were ready to complete the mission or die trying. That takes courage.
The essential issue of the second film compared to the first is the movement and fluidity of the jaegers. In the first film, they actually behaved like a mechanized giant robot with their robust movements, but in the second the jaegers moved like they were Gundams fighting...
I love how all the Jaegers are depicted as extremely competent fighters. No one "messes up." They employ all employ clever tactics and just get overwhelmed. It really sells the true desperation and terror of the situation.
Yeah they made the Jaegers feel both powerful but also quite fragile. The would take damage and be obviously impaired but the Kaiju were organic so they could absorb a lot of punishment because their tissue was flexible. It was an interesting dynamic, and gives you a real sense of how powerful these things are.
Well, remember how gypsy had a escape pod? Thats why the cockpits in the head. Cherno alpha doesnt have an escape pod due to its cockpit being in the chest and heavily armored.
Well Cherno is the only mark 1 jaeger that survived something that I don’t remember,so maybe they didn’t think that they would need it back then because it was so armored. Boom I’m smart This comment goes to TheTsar ofAll
well, that was to deal with the severe flaw of the mark ones like Cherno Alpha. at least by putting them at the top, the pilots at least had a chance to escape an explosion of the Jaeger. the pilots of the Mk 1s did not have that luxury.
I still hate seeing these two jaegers fall so fast, they were badass. And the fact that it also represents every country in the world fighting together made me happy
Yeah. They made this back when we didn't hate the Russians for invading their neighbor. They did honor here to Russian contributions. And you feel the soviet music kick in and your like "Hell yeah!"
Cherno Alpha fue mi titán favorito, amé su diseño, pero tristemente no estuvo mucho tiempo en batalla como nos hubiera gustado a todos a quienes nos encantó
If you actually paid attention to the movie, you'll hear that the kaiju rapidly adapt to any threat, and these kaiju were specifically adapted to kill those jaegers.
I really love this small detail added to Striker Eureka 2:02. You can hear its motors, hydraulics and other components revving up to its maximum to move this behemoth from a standstill to full speed while displacing a huge amount of water
The Marshal should have just authorized Striker Eureka to join in the fight. At least the odds of winning for the Jaegers is higher in a 3 vs 2 fight and they probably just return with some damaged Jaegers that can still be repaired.
@@potatopcfan8301 But Gipsy isn't advanced enough to carry the bomb, is it? They clearly designed Striker Eureka for that type of task, didn't they? Besides, Stacker clearly didn't trust Raleigh and Mako to join the fight after their test failed, remember?
@@masterpenguin8472 i know he didn't trust them but in that situation he should let them go because its better to have a half pilot than no Jaeger at all and that mistake costed 5 pilots and 2 jaegers

Anyway, here's the breakdown on why Otachi and Leatherback were perfect counters to Cherno, Crimson, and Striker:
Otachi's acid is perfect against Cherno, which was a slow, heavily armored Jaeger.
It's called protagonism
i actually love your explanation
and given that Cherno had held off kaijus for six years that meant the precursors had studied all of their failures
Not friends we need Guillermo Del Toro back!

How did they even manage to make pacific rim uprising? Legit you can’t even compare the quality of the two
It's because this film overperformed in China, that it even got a sequel.
One name: Guillermo Del Toro. That’s why the quality of uprising was low. A good director who has fun with his project can create something memorable.
simple answer. cash grab. Uprising toys literally flowed out as soon the movie was released. I should know. I build gunpla and some model kits. it was already available in the online market even the physical stores as soon the movie was out.
Whole world: The Jaegers should only use sharp weapons when absolutely needed because Kaiju blood is toxic.
China: ...
Yeah it's because Crimson isn't really designed to be a blunt Fighter. It was designed to be Sharp and Bleed kaijus to death (idk why)
Yeah, that did annoy me. They say that’s why they didn’t use the sword until it was the only option, but then Crimson Typhoon just ruins that idea.

It just gives the pilots more of a reason to fight harder.
The first movie is 80 times better than uprising. Like if you agree
If you think about it, Otachi was actually so strong since it takes several punches from typhoon, and then cherno, and then a few more from eureka but still gives gipsy danger a tough fight

@@devilbringer1102 indeed, nice catch
everything about Cherno was badass.....all the way from the intro music to the hammerfist to their jaeger and their suits......damnnnn why wasnt pacific rim 2 like this
I will always adore how the studio animated the Jagers; the fluid movements of Typhoon and the rigid and mechanical movements of Cherno due to the generation difference between later Jagers versus the MK1s
I guess it's to appeal to the child audience. But would love to see an actual sequel rather than the pathetic excuse of a power rangers movie.
I'm sure Gundams movement would mimic the first jaegers movement, that's why they're set in space to allow for more range and freedom on mobility
