running costs is a huge issue, often forgotten about when people keep spouting off that their gaming PC can do 300 frames a second or path tracing or 16k
A system which can play modern games in excess of 60fps and keep running costs to a minimum is a good system

Thats because laptop parts are often more efficient than their desktop counterparts, you can usually see them using half or a third of their laptop version's power with only like a 15% performance drop possibly due to thermal throttling

    • @niebuhr6197

No, Rdna2 has incomplete power monitoring on desktops and it's uncertain it is the same on laptops, so in reality gpu could be using 10-20 watts more than reported.

My barebones one arrived today. Was a little annoying to set up. The wifi, bluetooth, and ethernet drivers didn’t install automatically. Luckily I had a usb-c to ethernet adapter laying around, so I was able to use that to find the drivers and install them manually. For anyone seeing this, the HX99G drivers work for this one. Just download them, go into device manager, and then install them from there. Click update driver for each device and select the corresponding folder for it to search for the driver.
Now that it’s set up (with Steam Big Picture launching on boot) it’s working beautifully. Super impressive little device. It’s gonna be a great 1080p machine for my living room TV. I could run most of my games at 4K, but from a couch sitting distance and with a 55” TV that is pointless. Plus my TV has VRR (48hz - 120hz) and I’d rather hit that range consistently than needlessly run things at 4K.

I mean in fairness this little box can do more than gaming, it's a powerful all around computer in a small form factor. BTW, I think Palworld stutters are not HW based, I believe it comes down to being an indie game releasing early compared to a studio game in dev terms. Also, after it exploded in popularity I imagine the devs were partying it up for a couple of weeks. I know I would have been. 🍾

I have the hx80g... And it's indeed not something for everyone. For some context, I had a budget of 700€, I needed something with quiet a bit more power than my old ryzen 5500u laptop but small enough to keep it in bagback while travelling (since I move for work every 3 months). So, first I wanted a gaming laptop, but for that price pretty much everything has an rtx 3050 with just 8gb of ram, no software and that shitty display with 60% rgb coverage... I would had tob pay more than 1k€ to have what I needed.
This was my only option since the gpu has the exact amount of power I need, with windows 11 pro already installed, 32 gb of Ram, a good portable monitor and a decent speaker was just 770€ in total... So, it's a pc for a very particular use. It doesn't get really hot for something this small and REALLY quiet, even at full performance it's barely noticeable
The cons are that is not really upgradeable, need always to be plugged, it's hard to clean the fans, and with the pc, the charger, keyboard, mouse and the portable monitor make the bagback considerable heavy, almost 5kg

It's windows running on the background, On my pc windows 11 take up to 0.5gb's of vram running with nothing on, Steam on the other hand if left with hardware acceleration on take an other 200-500mb of vram as well! and also google chrome with any extensions and hardware acceleration can also eat up vram!.. 8gb are actually still enough for most games but background stuff do steal up to 1gb and it's redicilus.

How much storage can I add to the free M.2 slot?
It comes with 1TB PCIe storage installed.
Can I add 2TB, 4TB or only 1TB in the available slot?
I have asked Minisforum support I they answer very strangely: I’m not sure about this. But I can tell you wich interface is using what memory. After all I also need to see the actual product to confirm”.
This is a very Strange answer to a very simply question I think.

Impressive, but not a big difference to the one with 6600m. I can't understand why they are still building new machines with 8GB VRAM solutions. Since this is RDNA2 and they already have a part with 6600m, they should have gone with an 6850m and 12GB, which in fact would the best choice overall today since RDNA3 mobile does not have any option with more than 8GB (not counting the 7900m, which up to now is a paper release being exclusive on that alienware laptop no one could really buy)

Thanks for the review 🙂. I have an amateur question maybe You or someone in here can help with please. I'm ordering one of these as my first PC in many years and I am gonna install it in an arcade cabinet. (I'm so old that now's the time to play retro games...again...but I also wan't to be able to play new games like the ones in this review). QUESTION: How easy / difficult is it to get in and install an extra m.2 ssd for storage? As I read the specs, there should be an avalílable slot in there. This will be my only PC and 1TB is not enough for steam games, my 3D printing files etc. So I would love to put a 2 TB extra in. (Actually I would like a 4TB better, but I don't think this mini PC can accept more than 2TB per slot unfortunately?). I have never build a pc myself, but maybe this part is ok difficulty level for me?

When you're saying 100 Watts of power and using AMD gpu, keep in mind, that software only measures - let me quote Igor's lab- The scheme for the TGP-relevant areas shows that apart from the GPU and the memory, NOTHING else is really included. AMD’s specifications thus refer purely to the GPU and the memory, EXCLUDING all other losses, including those of the voltage converters! This is also reflected in the fact that the power consumption of hot AMD graphics cards can increase significantly without the performance dropping completely. You can’t just add a few watts on top by rule of thumb either, that will definitely go wrong as well. However, depending on the level of the TGP and thus also the board and component temperatures or the quality of the installed voltage transformers, you can assume an addition of between approx. 20 and 30 percent to the TGP to arrive at the actual final value. This is very rough and inaccurate. And it ends up being one of the reasons why I absolutely dislike software “measurements” on AMD graphics cards. In
