    These are pretty great options for sending a link to friends/family who want to game but don't want the DIY aspect of gaming. You're giving up the full integrated laptop with a dGPU for a smaller desktop replacement. I'd pay an additional premium for a Framework-style approach that would let me upgrade and service components more. Also to any future tinfoil UA-cam trolls: I am not a bot. I know what you're trying to argue, though I think this classifies as a "real graphics card".
      Personally, I don't like these because they're obsolete very quickly.
      When I started PC gaming in 2017, I bought a 1080ti for £650. Well, in 2023 that is beaten by a £300 RTX 4060 at half the wattage.
      So ideally, you want to be able to swap out components and as such standard form factors should always be sought for in PCs. Buy a prebuilt, sure, but make sure that in 4 years you can replace the graphics card without issue. Same for the Mobo/CPU. You'll need to.

      Developers are not committed to 1440p/30 on consoles (PlayStation 5), and are especially not committed to 60 FPS or 120 FPS on the CPU, which is difficult to overcome regarding CPU performance, especially with mobile chipsets.
      The RX 6650 should be very close to the PlayStation 5's GPU in terms of performance, focusing on 1080p/60, or 1440p/30 upscaled to 4k. The CPU ought to exceed the PlayStation 5's CPU, but doesn't exceed it by enough to guarantee 60 FPS in all instances, and thus AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) "Frame Gen" can't be counted on to give the illusion of 120 FPS as it drops out when frame rates fluctuate.
      VRAM is also going to be a constricting factor, 8GB is generally for 1080p. 12GB for 1440p, and you will likely need double that, 24GB for true 4k. Putting 4k/120 largely in the realm of the RTX 4090 alone, if 120 FPS is even possible on a per game basis.

      @@marvinmallette6795 No expectation of rendering that many game frames, I just like the smoother UI and better text readability of 4K120. Plus the little wince you get when the device you plugged in can't support the native resolution so you have to make the choice of resolution or refresh rate that you're going to sacrifice.

    • @marvinmallette6795
      @marvinmallette6795 5 місяців тому +1

      @@cheweh842 120Hz is 120 frames. Anything under 48 FPS generally doesn't work well with Adaptive Refresh Rates, and if you can get over 48 FPS, then Adaptive Refresh Rates seem to be practically unnecessary. I haven't yet figured out the value of FreeSync, or GSync over 60 FPS.
      4k/30 is baseline HDMI. 4K/60 or 4k/120 generally require HDMI cabling of a certain spec to support HDCP. AMD just hit the news not too long ago about how difficult it was to get 4k/120 certified on Linux, and the report was that it wasn't hardware but DRM.

      I was looking at both as well. Ended up with the HX100G because it has a good discrete GPU and is very quiet. The 780XTX is quite noisy apparently. It also has USB4, so you can connect an eGPU with Thunderbolt if the RX6650M is not enough, but unless if you play games at native 4K, you will not need one.

    I wonder if this will get a 2024 chip update. I really want to see a proper apples to apples of the 7840 and 8840, I know the CPU and iGPU are identical but the NPU has been updated, and that AI chipset should otherwise help with things like FSR, should it not? Unfortunately with all of these being laptop chips, there's just no guarantee that a product revision is just a revision and not a complete change to the motherboard and cooling, a problem seen with laptops. Personally I'm disappointed with AMD of having this 'more of the same' approach, where there's not even a generation between the 7k series and 8k series products, and with RDNA 4 being late to arrive, I just think AMD is falling behind the curve when they've been otherwise strong since Zen started shipping, other than the massive delays on RDNA 3; the only real benefit might be that 2023 versions have a discount compared to the 2024 versions, though I wouldn't expect much of a discount other than yearly update FOMO that the handset market nurtured with yearly releases. My only additional gripe is that these mini PCs are still retaining 'gaming' laptop tiers of pricing, yet logically they should be cheaper as you're stripping all of the peripherals and supplying a barebones chassis, which makes it not price per performance competitive with any other desktop of comparable spec; I understand niche market and all, but come on now, someone getting a desktop would likely look elsewhere unless they have a specific need for a mini PC box, of which virtually anyone outside of specific business and industry would not outright need. Maybe we need Valve to come wreck this market with a low-cost Steam Machine.

So as console developers revert to targeting 30 FPS at 1080p, the MinisForum Neptune's RX 6650 will likely be similarly constrained. If FSR3 is added to older games it _might_ make them retroactively stronger, but it isn't likely to be overly beneficial going forward.
      "Neptune" was a codename for a Sega console, and it is likely an intentional reference for a device which is intended to provide parity specs to the 9th Generation of consoles. 1440p/30, with dynamic resolution scaling (DSR) as low as 720p/30.

      COVID inflation seems to be waning, bringing prices down into a more normalized range. This does mean that the "Mini" PC category isn't the best value. "Gaming Laptops" do generally cost more than similar "tier" desktops, and the laptops may use "inferior" mobile parts, or be more limited by thermal or power constraints.
      However, if one wants something more compact than an ITX form factor, and less power hungry at the 200 watt category, and not an awkward laptop with a battery to worry about, then $600 to $700 is mighty reasonable.
