Perfect timing for this video, I have a '12 535 m sport and I recently hit 102k miles. Everything here looks like it can be done at home except for the walnut blasting. Thanks for showing BMW owners that the dealership is merely an option when it comes to simple service procedures like these.

WOW, BMW still uses the plastic coolant flange in the N55!! I replaced it in the N54 in my E92 last year. Didn't know they still using it in the N55, shame on you BMW. Overall great video Mousa, keep the good work.

My 2008 535xi has 214K miles on it. She's still kicking. First thing I had to replace was the Mickey Mouse coolant part at 197k. Then the other ones throughout the coolant system, especially the one attached to the radiator on driver side. Updated plugs and coils, cam sensors, filter housing gaskets and pretty much everything you mentioned. I had to do the heater switch too.

Autool makes an amazing portable Walnut blasting machine that includes everything (except the walnuts) all adapters for all cars. Cleans each valve inlet in seconds and professionally done.... the Autool HTS 518 runs at about $400 or less. Just buy a compressor at Harbor Freights and when you are done with it, return it for a refund. A must have for BMW owners that love working on their cars...
I have their amazing Smoke Machine Autool SDT206 and does an incredible job in finding the smallest vacuum leaks fast! Another viewer did a tear down on the machine and was blown away of all the premium quality parts used to build it and how clean it looked with the assembly! Autool ain't no joke... worth my money!

Its a good idea to buy a bridge seal and sleeves for the zf gearboxes too while everyhting is off and your changing oil, they are usually flattened out a bit and once changed the clutch pressure readings usually reduce on the diagnostic machine. Great video just wanted to add this as they are pretty cheap make a big difference, only extra thing to do is drop the valve body while sump is off

I have a 2008 535i that I bought with 98,500 miles on it and I need some work done on it. Since you live in San Diego now, can I have you work on it because you look like you know what you are doing and you are a very honest person which is hard to come by. I would trust with any of my cars to be honest. If you read this and see it, today is 5/11/2022 and I am up north about 65 miles from Kearny Mesa Zip Code 92123. I have a radiator leak and it is hitting the exhaust pipe on the passenger side and it smells bad and when it gets in the car it burns my eyes. I put all of 200 miles on this car in the last 2 months and it has given me a lot of trouble. I watched your videos and because of you I got inspired and changed the valve cover gasket, spark plugs and the ignition coils plus an oil change. Oh and the car threw codes left and right so I saw another video you did and I replaced an Oxygen Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 1 also because of you. I am not a mechanic, I have ZERO training, never touched a BMW of any kind and this is my 6th BMW oh and I never went to mechanic shop back in High School, so your videos are awesome to watch because of the way you explain things, it is easy for me anyway to pick up on what you're saying. Anyway I like all the videos I watch and I went ahead and Subscribed to your channel. I hope to hear from you very soon and I look forward to you working on my car if you are willing to do so. I would be happy to pay you for your services and pay cash if you would like. Thank you for your time and consideration. ~ DC

I got all new ignition coils, spark plugs, trans flush, OFHG, coolant reservoir expansion kits with all new upper/lower hoses replaced. Pretty much damn near everything replaced with OEM parts or upgraded besides fuel injectors/vanos solenoids, and radiator replaced. Just bought a fuel injector cleaning tool kit before I cash out on all new fuel injectors. Any other reasons I’m missing that’d cost low mpg or misfires? It always misfires and has a check engine light when going to 4/5 and already checked those are the only 2 that miss fires. But when I park and restart my car and easy into higher speeds it never pops up.

So glad you changed from the chemicals with mechanical cleaning to walnut blasting of the intake valves.
ATF was beyond expired. Too bad you did not do a 100% mechanical replacement. Drain and refill is just diluting the remaining 10L of the expired ATF.

Given it has 130K miles as much as I'd have liked to do a full flush and pull the mechatronics to check seals it shifts well and the adaptations were well within spec, no major wear indicated via a scan tool and mixing with some of the remaining oil would ensure friction material remains in the fluid if there was excess wear. For this car given the adaptations looked good I'd recommend the next owner changes the oil at 30 to 50K miles depending on if they drive mostly highway or city.

I don’t understand doing walnut blasting vs using GM upper engine cleaner: takes less time and certainly much faster and cheaper?? Results are the same according to 2 mechanics that I fully trust.
I just did the upper engine cleaner before tearing my motor down just to try proving them wrong because every forum says “walnut blasting is the best”; the upper engine cleaner has my intakes looking new!!

You have just confirmed I made the correct decision buying Japanese cars for the last 25 years. German cars are high maintenance. At 100K km which is about 62,000 miles , I feel I just broke in my Camry. The coolant is good for 10 years , and I do not expect any corroded fittings that need replacement. I already checked my spark plugs and I will not replace the coil till one fail. I make air filters last the life of the car by inspecting and blowing it clean every couple of years, unless I decided to move to the desert. BMW have a reputation of using cheap plastic parts and some of them, you cannot even replace the battery without help from the dealer to reprogram the computer. I did replace one item, the oil filter holder, which is cheap plastic and prone to break, mine is now aluminum. My 98 Corolla, I went about 200,000 miles and never touched the transmission, I do not expect my luck to last, so I will change the fluid soon. A BMW , how much you will pay me to take it off you?? Another 100K miles and the owner might have to tow it to the desert and shoot it in the computer.

I managed to fill my 8HP ZF trans with 5.5L. Maybe 6L with spills. I had to make a second fill after the transmission had reached its target temp AND most importantly, I had to do the second fill WHILE the car was running. In the FCP euro guide they don't provide that information, so it was tricky to figure it out.
How much transmission fluid were you able to get into the ZF trans?
Also why not use the original ZF fluid?

    • @VehicularDIY
      @VehicularDIY  2 роки тому +3

Yes a 2nd fill right after starting the car and double check level after going through gears and letting the trans get over 40 to 50c. I think this took between 6 and 7 liters. Went with this fluid due to its rating and price.

HaHa Quick synopsis... The N55 BMW platforms are quite the mistress in terms of maintenance. $$$$
    - The metal mickey mouse fitting is sold by FCP Euro in a kit. The original plastic fitting has a one-time use metal clamp. If the plastic fitting is corroded it might break off and you can get the metal clamp off by crushing the plastic fitting. If not, it might be a hassle to get the metal clamp off...by cutting the hose or using a Dremel. Get a replacement screw hose clamp. The FCP Euro clamp is junk. There is also an o-ring.
    - The ATF change is a pain. To change the filter you need to buy an entirely new plastic pan, since the filter is not removable. So Stupid. Get a ZF OE Pan, versus BMW OEM part. The fluid is also by ZF...but you can use Liqui Moly.
    - BONUS: Get a box of oil pan drain plugs for $2-3 each. The threads get messed up over time. So change the drain plugs every 25k-35k miles with an oil change (5k-7k miles). Plus change the idler pulleys with the belt change. The bearing wear and get noisy. Changing the coolant is #$%%^ Bleeding the system is automated.

What I’ve learned about BMWs with over 100k is to replace everything made of plastic.

I like your content but the order of things in the video is a bit all over the place IMO. It’s also no longer a DIY video, it’s more of a tips style while we watch you work in fast motion. But I guess that’s the only way to get all of the maintenance you did in to one video. Check out M539 Restorations for excellent BMW content.

He already has more in depth DIYs for all this maintenance, I think, not 100% sure about ALL but most of it for sure.

After 100k miles you should probably sell you bmw to a 16 year old kid for 3000 dollars

This video is a little cumbersome, I can't tell if it is a DIY, a vlog, or a dealer sales video. I get it you want to document the work done but maybe stop mentioning it. Just a little constructive criticism with the new format.

I don’t like these time lapse videos of you fixing things. I’d rather see step by step while you explain what you’re doing.

Bmw and all these auto manufacturers, they purposely put all these plastic junk around the heated engines, knowing it’s gonna extort they driver’s pockets, now they have all these newer electrical engines that are far more complicated lol 😂 am driving my 2009 til they bury me.
