I Worked With The Dubliners A Few Times In The Mid 1970s. Well I Say WORKED !!! They SANG While I Brought Them Cases Of CARLSBERG SPECIALS !!! GREAT Musicians !!! Even GREATER People !!! Happy Memories.
Cheers for this lads, Scots boy channelling my Irish roots, my grandad was fuckin obsessed with Mr Kelly and the Dubliners, he's the reason I play guitar.
Incredible performance, love how Ciara Bourke is playing harmonica in the verse and guitar in the chorus , what a talent , no one can compare to the Dubliners, legendary performances
Probably one of the best songs written about my home of Belfast and sung by a legend of Ireland Luke Kelly RIP true legend legends never die rest in peace
I'll probably get no thanks for this, but here goes. The version of this song that Luke Kelly sang was collected by Ewan MacColl from a Norfolk farmworker called Harry Cox. The song is an old English broadside ballad, improved by the folk process, or maybe the folk song was degraded when it became a printed broadside. In any case, in these broadsides the action was set in Barking or London; why Harry Cox sang "Belfast" is a bit of a mystery. Maybe it sounded exotic or something. In the book "The Last Interview", Ewan MacColl tells the story of how Luke (who he knew well) took this song and had a minor hit with it with the Dubliners. On one occasion that the Dubliners were in London, Ewan spoke with Luke, saying that Harry Cox was not well and was finding it hard living on very little money. Ewan suggested that some of the royalties that the Dubliners earned with the song could be forwarded to Harry, something that Luke and the band readily agreed. The next time that Ewan and Luke met, Ewan brought-up the matter again with Luke, who was under the impression that money had been sent to Harry. However, Ewan told him that this hadn't happened. It turned out that the manager of the Dubliners (or at least one of them) had been pocketing money from royalties for years and that was the reason that Harry Cox hadn't received any funds. "The black velvet band" is also printed in the 1960 compilation (by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger) "The Singing Island."
@@MusicPlaylists7 If you believe this is an Irish song then you are wrong. The earliest known broadside ballad of 'The Black Velvet Band' was printed by Swindells of Manchester, England in the late 1700's - copies are held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford and can be viewed on line. First Line: 'To go in a smack, down at Ba[r]king, when a boy, as apprentice I was bound'. Barking is in Essex, England. Belfast doesn't appear in the song at this point in its history. One further thing, Darren. If you accuse the 'British people of claiming everything' then you are including the Scots, Welsh, Northern Irish and English in that (false) accusation.
Thank you for this video, it was absolutely Fantastic!!!! I loved the Dubliners, may they rest in Peace and I thank God for all the joy that they gave to us. Nr. Ireland.
Remember it live many decades ago and it has haunted me ever since. If I remember it correctly I would say in the t60s at the Brighton Dome? It still haunts me now...pure magic!
I look very much like Luke Kelly, I showed him to my family and they said it was uncanny, my hair is just like his, including beard. My mom said older pictures of him even looked like my dad, but I was born in 99, so its not possible, but he has to be at least distantly related to me because he's the only person I've seen with my exact hair.
MAGNIFICENT TIMELESS DUBLINERS ALL HAIL THE MAJESTIC KING OF IRISH MUSIC AND SONGS LUKE KELLY R.I.P 💚🤍🧡

I didn't knew Bob Ross was a singer
Luke's lookin pretty tired here.. nevertheless always love to hear him ..
He looks like an irish Luisito Comunica
This is great. Who runs this account if you don’t mind me asking?
Bob Ross on whiskey 😳
But for a few thousand miles this would be called Bluegrass.
Hope the monk is safe good luck
It's odd the way Ciaran just pretends to play his guitar during the chorus
