I can't believe he's gone 40th years ,I had the pleasure of meeting him when I was a messenger boy on lesson street in Dublin got an autograph still have it .
I come back to this version countless times and never tire of Luke singing it. Luke's Anniversary of January 30 is fast approaching. He will have left us 38 years ago.
Luke Kelly was the greatest balladeer of them all. Raglan Road and Peggy Gordon are my favourites by him. Thanks for letting me know his anniversary is next week.🙏
I'm sorry to tell u 40 years this year one of the best I was only 3 when he went god bless luke these singers will never be forgotten in Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤ 🙏 ♥
This performance of Luke becomes so meaningfull when you realise that these words came straight from his soul, he knew he was sick and knew he would be leaving this mortal coil soon.
Wake up wake up love part you can see the tiredness in him and was ready to go home soon this song is my favorite and so is Luke Kelly he lived an amazing life and sang so beautifully in this we love you Luke and will never forget you ❤️
Kristine the Dubliners are unequal, Luke a great Balladeer, Ronny with the gravely voice, Barney unique on the Banjo, John brilliant on the Violin and Ciaren with his wit and comical songs.
I’ve listen to this song many, many times, and will continue to do so. Luke was very ill when singing this song, one of the last he recorded. At the end you can hear Ronnie say well done Luke. R.I.P Luke, a great balladeer.
December 1983 Luke Kelly last appearance with the Dubliners he died in Jan 1984 sorely missed a sad but another beautiful performance and a great song RIP Luke the greatest of all
It's a common myth that this was his last performance. It wasn't. This was recorded in June 1983, but it wasn't broadcast until 4th November 1983. He performed inbetween those dates, most notably on a tour of Holland in late 83, and the Dubliners album Live In Carre came from that tour. His last performance was actually in early January 84, at a Dublin hotel.
By then he probaby knew his brain tumour was not curable. And he had began accepting it. He was forgetting words as a result. He sang this through like noone else could. The songs first verse mirrors his life at that time which makes it all the more heartbreaking. "I must away now, I can no longer tarry, This morning's tempest, I have to cross, I must be guided, without a stumble, Into the arms I love the most"
There are no words to describe Luke's talent and charisma! For sure , Luke you are still continue the best among all folk singers and I believe you could sing, perform, and give your own personal touch to Rock & Roll. Your songs are in my daily life and I'm passing your legacy on to the youngers ones. Such a precious Irish treasure has to be shared!
Yes, I share your feelings for Luke and his music. I listen to a song or two of his every day while driving. I almost feel like Ronnie and the others are watching him, knowing how ill he is and hoping he gets through the song, which he does beautifully and memorably.
Many have tried to sing this ballad few have come close , but none to compare with the incredible Luke Kelly he made it his own I listen to it regularly and it always brings a tear to my eye, I met him in the bar of the Commadore hotel in Cobh not long before his death with Ronnie trying to cure himself after the night before, I was in the same boat not much was said. Hard to think its almost 40 years ago. RIP my lovely man.
1:31 For I am tired love, and oh so weary. His poor face had aged so much in a handful of years. I've only just come across the Dubs in the last year and this crushes me. Long live that voice.
One of those rare performers that exudes emotion, RIP Luke Kelly, you may be gone a long time now, but you still bring so many so much joy. A better legacy to leave I cannot imagine.
I fucking love this music, thank you Ireland for this and infinite thanks to you The Dubliners, I've been a fan since 2009 at my young age, now I'm so in love with the love of my life and this songs are really touching
I wish I had met the man. I was at Newcastle Uni in the late 60's when he would have been playing at the High Level Club. I played at the Uni folk nights so our paths never crossed. I am still gigging at 78 weekly and am just about to bone up on this gem for my next gig in three days.
I feel so sad watching this. Luke died with amazing grace and dignity. I can't help but feel sad looking at the usually happy and smiling Ronnie Drew. I think he's been crying, knowing deep down this may be the last time he ever performs with his friend. So sad.
Ronnie telling luke "well done" at the end is heart breaking. He must have been struggling bad before singing this. I heard he picked this song and they weren't too keen. Luke and the boys will always be remembered 💚🤍🧡
People often tell me I am narrow-minded in terms of my musical taste, which is stuck somewhere in the period of the 60s through the 80s. Well, sorry, but as wild as my imagination is, I cannot imagine any modern singer do what Luke Kelly does - knowing that he will die soon, bring up a gorgeously emotional and authentic performance, which, if it doesn't bring tears to your eyes, you have never experienced real music. Rest in peace, Luke 💚💚💚
Like you pal I listen to all music from all years and genres. But Luke Kelly was one of a kind, his music touches your soul, true Irish legend! Rise St.Luke Kelly 💚🇮🇪🍀
I'm afraid to tell u lu,ey died in 1983 I was only 3 ut still listen and enjoy his music this one was his last live u could see Rooney r barney ready to step in but a true pro he got through it if I had I wish it would to see luke live hope your well 👌💯
I love a lot of love songs but this one inspired me a lot the melody lyrics I do not know why but I do every single one of Luke‘s songs this one is the one I think he should’ve been remembered for I love this song and ever since I heard it it has been on my repertoire
Oh my god stop it !!!!!!!n Stuff my mum and dad brought us up on! xxxxxx Thank you so much for the most beautiful music from the best ever musicians zxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The Irish have always for generation after generation left their homes and families to fight & work overseas far from home ,, if you survived ,you’d wish your return would be as told in this heart breaking song , but in the real world the Irish wife is loving but can be the hardest women in this world , when will Ireland be that gods soft warm generous land ,, I’ve never known Ireland to deserve anything but sad sad songs ,, Luke Kelly , a man that Ireland wore away until still a young man it swallowed him up ,, Remember Luke Kelly ,, RIP
Whos still listening to this lovely song
Timeless one of the best ❤❤❤
I am ❤
One of my favourites! 😊
New years day 2025, sitting here with a Jameson in the wee small hours listening to a legend. God bless you Luke
I can't believe he's gone 40th years ,I had the pleasure of meeting him when I was a messenger boy on lesson street in Dublin got an autograph still have it .
It's great to see people still watching this and remembering the great man
My heart aches every time I watch this. Knowing how Luke was suffering yet he sang so beautifully. God Bless Luke. Your music will live on.
Same here, what a great singer.
He had an amazing penetrating voice. As did Ronnie Drue!
This is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in 21 years of my life.
I'm a good few years older than you and it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Keep it with you through your life.
same here
Luke's last public appearance too, apparently. The fiddle solo intro is just perfection for me
Wat a chanter god bless
Rest in Peace Mr. Kelly. Thank you for making music for human beings with souls. This stuff in 2024 couldnt come anywhere near.
I come back to this version countless times and never tire of Luke singing it. Luke's Anniversary of January 30 is fast approaching. He will have left us 38 years ago.
A Present of crap

The Dubliners. The great Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drue, Barney MC Kenna! What a tradition!
I am 40 years old, I was wish I was born in times when he was here, what a legend 🙌🏼
The haunting and brilliant voice of the legend Luke Kelly

Glad you liked it.
@@TheDublinersOfficialbrought me to tears and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

Even though he was dying. Lukie still did it better than anyone else. LEGEND
Great to the end.
Can’t get enough of this man even after thirty eight years of his death never will be forgotten 💚💚💚
Kristine the Dubliners are unequal, Luke a great Balladeer, Ronny with the gravely voice, Barney unique on the Banjo, John brilliant on the Violin and Ciaren with his wit and comical songs.
It's beautiful, magical Luke, but a sad version of Luke. He's obviously very unwell. RIP Luke, you treasure.
I’ve listen to this song many, many times, and will continue to do so.
Luke was very ill when singing this song, one of the last he recorded.
At the end you can hear Ronnie say well done Luke.
R.I.P Luke, a great balladeer.
Same here can just picture Luke and Ronnie playing this up there beyond the clouds.
You're right, This was also Luke's final public performance.
r.i.p. legend . a fan from holland 🙏🙏

The most poignant version of this most beautiful song and despite his declining health, he performed for his audience with all of his heart and soul.

This song still gives me chills. My Dads favourite and as he always says, they dont make them like that anymore❤
Luke will never be forgotten.
I heard him sing twice. He was literally astounding. The memory is with me to the end. He sang his life and his valediction.
One of those rare performers that exudes emotion, RIP Luke Kelly, you may be gone a long time now, but you still bring so many so much joy. A better legacy to leave I cannot imagine.
