The “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” was a major landmark marketing campaign targeting the African - American and Diaspora Market to mark 400 years of the first enslaved African arriving in Jamestown Virginia. The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture led the project in collaboration with the Office of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, the Panafest Foundation and the Adinkra Group of USA.
The Year of Return sort to make Ghana the focus for millions of African descendants reacting to their marginalisation by tracing their ancestry and identity. By this, Ghana became the beacon for African people living on the continent and the diaspora.
The United States Congress had 2018 passed an Act H.R. 1242 - 400 Years of African-American which was in itself a historically significant milestone. Ghana is the gateway to Africa capitalised on its unique position as the location for 75 per cent of the slave dungeons built on the west coast of Africa. The favourable government policy of making it a national priority to extend a hand of welcome back home to Africans in the diaspora served as the catalyst for the campaign.
Currently, there are still numerous imposing European forts and castles harbouring harrowing reminders of an intense and complex history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in our land over centuries. This on its own has made Ghana the focus for millions of African descendants.
Since the initiative began, numerous diasporans and African Americans have troop the country.. Dentaa spoke to Prince Anthony Bart-Appiah & Del Titus Bawuah
to find out the need for Diasporans and if we have the right structures in place to receive our brothers and sisters?

Not just more housing for the middle & rich class income earners but we need to find away to also help the less fortunate prosper as well so they can have ways to earn money and make great way of living.
That is true, there is one organization in Ghana doing that. Is called Sankorfa Repatriation programme. We put in money on monthly bases to help the less prevelage one
Yes...I agree! I work in the construction industry and I know lots of brothas that are skilled in plumbing, flooring, framing, landscaping, ect...all we need is someone to get us together!

Exactly, I'm visiting in 2022 with plans to relocate at some point. I visit to get familiar with the country and the culture. BUT but I want to contribute constructively to the community around me. I will need someone to help me match my gift/talents with the local needs. *We all do better when we all do better* That is essential.
Ghana has some work to do. The infrastructure, the road, affordable housing and housing regulations and making sure they have legitimate agents, they also need to have more stable jobs for the locals. A lot of African Americans want to relocate to Ghana and they have been to Ghana and have stayed in Ghana..the people of Ghana are wounderful however a lot of infrastructure needs to be done... especially with the roads and making sure the youth have opportunity. I have personally stayed in Ghana and it was a good experience and I will be returning.
My thoughts exactly
The youth you are fighting for are lazy, they complain about not having jobs but when employed the don't want to work.
@@yungafricans9270 I don't think they are lazy I think they don't see what they are working for
@@yungafricans9270 That’s normal for any youth. For kids you have to give them a business regimen and an outlook without using defeatist terms like “you gotta work hard, you must crawl before walk” Instead uplift them. Teach them to work smart. Most of all us African Americans must put Ghanians first and work to help one another. Another term I hate is “that’s western science”. These terms hold us back tremendously. As the term goes - Science is never wrong, it only gained more information.
It's a shame the politicians in Africa don't know how to govern. and looks to us like they don't care about the progress of their land or their people. I just can't figure out why,
Great interview and input by both interviewees. However, we have to accept not all diasporans will end up settling. Changes needs to be made to systems in Ghana. I don't believe they should be solely targeted at making things comfortable for the diasporans. It should be for all Ghanaians, both local and returnees.
Think of the diasporans as having been exposed to the highest western civilization. If they are comfortable than Ghana is heading in the right direction yes for the Ghana citizens and for Ghana .
@Jonathan Quartey...excellent observations!🇬🇭🙏🏾💯
I agree. As a diasporan I really don’t want the locals to be harmed in no way cause that can easily happen with raising cost of things. I’ve seen this happen here when so many people from NY moved to Atlanta. They caused the prices if the homes there to go up making prices too high for the locals there.
Yes yes yes; I solely agree with you
I think we in diaspora need to look more into building African together, putting African on the map, everywhere we go should always be our ultimate priority. Education is the key..I love this interview so much…thanks for sharing this
Indeed we need to unite and build our Africa into a powerhouse it is capable of becoming... I'm from South Africa and we as the youth are fighting the corruption government that is crippling our economy
Exactly!!!
Exactly!!!
@@asiphejohnson6543 Keep the good fight going strong. If we try we will succeed. I honestly believe Afrikans and Diasporians are naturally the smartest people ont the earth when it comes to innovation and taking action.
Education is not the key, going back to prior colonization is the key. You've lost you're Africa identity
I think Dentaa you need to invite and have this conversation with the government and Ghana 🇬🇭 President. It’s only government who can make change and develop a good infrastructure for Ghana and good policies to take the country forward.
Don’t worry, government is watching lol, they taking notes. Changes will come.
There are some of us that are in our 60’s and above that are retired (some twice or more) that would like to just return to the home of our Ancestors. Maybe not to start a business but I’m sure we can contribute in other ways. As for myself I have a BS in Business Management and a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. There are others like myself that can be quite useful I’m sure.
Absolutely...
So what are you planning?
@@Oyzatt It is indeed muddy water for us who are much over 60, who will not be good fits for the youthful dynamism that this original home continent needs. In my case, managing my arthritis is enough work for me, but as a former senior computer analyst I wish this consciousness had been there 30 years earlier. Africa needs rapid advancement into the technological age. Agriculture and agricultural science need to be top priorities. It is a heavy lift to sustain a rapidly growing population of 1.5 billion people. Much of the investments could come from the rich diaspora to supplement the wealth that’s already there, but is now focused on foreign tax havens.
There needs to be a growth of awareness all around. I read of Mao tseTung saying triumphantly at the Gate of Heavenly Peace, ‘Never again will the Chinese people be insulted’. Black and brown peoples’ situation is far more complicated than the Chinese situation was then, but, in the interest of survival, a start must be made.
In my opinion, Kwame Nkrumah could have been the Mao of Africa., but the weak links that contributed to his demise were there, and are still there to be exploited.
@@elbonde is a complex situation and depending on how one looks at it, will determine if one will eventually move to Ghana or not. Because is not just about moving physically but also mentally, because one must be willing to adjust and learn a way of living which in my opinion, not everyone is ready to unbuckle on that journey of transformation.
I'm a young person who my father brought to Europe when I was in my young age, but I've decided not to spend much time abroad, because the more one spends time abroad in my opinion, the harder it becomes impossible to make the transition
I would like to build a resort. give an opportunity to give jobs to locals and accommodate those of us who decide to visit.
I would gladly teach a customer service for free. I stayed in the Movenpick and the customer service was great. I think got lucky but I love being with my people.
I felt totally free for the first time in my life while in Ghana.
This is awesome. As a successful repatriate, now in my 9 year since I first touched the Motherland, this perspective is SOOOO REFRESHING and NEEDED. I think not only do we also need an "opposite" perspective (from the diasporans), but also, something I have been thinking of being a party of developing, a platform where both "slave descendant" diasporans and 1st & 2nd generation Western Africans can UNITE on a platform similar to this and have productive discussions. Thank you all for this ✊🏽
Creative arts industry, especially creative writing, is what I'd love to see flourish in Ghana and Africa. Great show. 👍🏼
We need also not to forget about locals we are building however most can’t afford an apartment, restaurant luxuries

True these conversations focus on the diaspora but locals need to be included in the building process not just tolerated.
I have been seeing all this conflict arising around diasporan vs. lets say "locals". I beg that we consider not looking at it as a competition. I agree that those on the continent should not be overlooked. This dynamic reminds me of this scenario..... I remember when my sister was out in the world going through difficulty, I told her to come home where my mother an I lived. I gave up my room. I eventually didn't do eough for her, I was told, but I understand the perspective of the person taken out of their home who just needs to return and then we can all regroup. then I understand the person at home waiting for their opportunity and having the comfort and familiarity of not having to start all over, but can be overlooked and surpassed. We must transform our thinking and ALWAYS THINK HOW CAN WE HAVE A WIN WIN. I THOROUGHLY BELIEVE THAT WE CAN ALL WIN IF WE THINK ABOUT EACH OTHER ALWAYS. LETS MAKE THIS TRAGEDY RIGHT. LETS SHOW GOD THAT WE HAVE FAITH AND BELIEF.
This was one of the best interviews I’ve seen so educational hitting the right targets!!!
Thank you for the interesting show. I was in Ghana with the market oriented agricultural program 12 years ago. I Herr now that many things have changed to the positive side. African countries are coming up. That is good news.
Interesting interview, the people promoting the movement of people outside Ghana in the diaspora should do so with deep research, promoting cultural tourism and promoting relocation are two different things, why give citizenship to anybody just because he comes on holidays. It has implications ,economically and politically. So things like taxation, voting and social services need to be looked at.
Then the fact of the matter is that the private sector jobs available are limited and poor paying.an influx of labour will have consequences on wages downward, those same people will also have problems with insufficient pay, especially as accommodation and cost of living is high, especially if your family lifestyle is foreign, think imported foods, expensive education, holidays abroad.
I have noticed that non African economic migrants are more realistic, they stay in low cost accommodation and even eat local foods, they take tro tro. And try to live within a tight budget.
African returnees feel they are superior to the local Lower Middle class and working class and feel they need to live like Wealthy people.
Getting caught in showing off etc.
They soon run out of cash and return disappointed.
My Advice is that they should use social media to communicate and form partnerships, pooling resources, financial and skills, to go into the areas of Agriculture, light industry, technology, finance and hospitality and tourism. They should leave the big cities if possible and start in big towns like Nsawam,Winneba,Sogakope,Ho , Cape Coast, Takoradi, Tamale Sunyani, and the likes.
Cost of living is lower, ability to make an impact is greater, it will also get you closer to the raw materials needed to industrialise.
If you stay in Accra, you can only do import dependant business or services, there is too much competition and not enough disposable income to support most.
Most important, remember not every one is a gifted entrepreneur, most people are salary workers so know yourself, if you can't hustle for 3 to 10 years before making it, don't try. Just come for holidays at Christmas to enjoy and go back to 9 to 5 in the cold.
What you are explaining ate the same precepts and concepts people face Every Single Day off the Afrikan continent as well. We must stop making it seem that Returning to Afrika is this tremendous almost impossible, unthought through thing. You do what you want and others will also. Lets be fair with comments not sounding like a colonizer.
@@deloresgupton3567 I am in support of diasporan immigration, but I am talking from long experience, even members of my own family found it hard to make a living here.
If you are a salaried employee the amount of good paying jobs is limited, I don't know if you are resident here, but it is far worse for this movement home, to have a high failure rate, its better for a few committed people to be successful examples, than to have large numbers of failures, eroding confidence and creating doubt in minds.it will take time for things to change in Africa. But the future looks brighter for the next generations.
Your comment was right on the money.
Selassie Tetevie I totally agree with you. When I was there I came with 98 other brother and sisters . Out of us who I would say maybe 20 of us came with an attitude of “I am finally home”. The other were straight up tourist!!!
@ Salassie, you hit the nail on the head. When/if planning to go to Ghana one should make several trips, visit different areas, see the needs then give serious thoughts about what one wants to do (small farm, raise chickens)feasible stuff and engage/mingle with the locals.
I am a member of diaspora in Panama. I have stumbled on ODANA NETWORK. This the fourth video of your channel I have viewed today. I believe you are doing a wonderful job of making those of us in the diaspora be aware of our roots. Excellent questions Dentaa.
I disagree with the gentleman that not all our regions have a product. They absolutely do, we just need to promote it and give people a 'why' for why they must visit that region.
We also need the supporting infrastructure e.g. road and transport to make it easier to access.
Great discussion, very insightful. Really enjoyed this.

Personally, AAs should stay where they are, yes, they can visit or if these diasporas are coming to Africa they should come with a plan of helping to build the continent not come with their arrogant, divisive mentalities……We already have enough of those on the continent as it is.
Come to the continent to promote unity, not superiorities or thinking you’re better than the owners of the land.
Africa should never forget it’s locals in all its countries, we must practice integration.

Positive takeaway: I would agree when he says that the productivity is lacking and needs to be improved. Also appreciated that they acknowledged that they need to involve the rest of the country and not just focus on city Center (Accra/Kumasi). Also appreciate them mentioning the lack of political engament towards to youth and the abysmal customer service. Also appreciated about discussion about developing indigenous companies. What Dentaa says about building training centres, to improve the quality of the workforce. Loved that they mentioned that the online presence needs to be improved - the shallow interconnectivity is a big issue throughout the continent particularly west and central Africa.
Great analogy about the West is a step parent and Africa being a bio-parent and you cannot deny what and who you are nor give up on it.

So Ghana doesn’t have to screen us so intensely. I was there for the year of return. It was hell getting my Visa to come . I won’t even get into the cost. I will not let this keep me from returning and seeking citizenship. I am coming with a business not looking for a job.

Dentaa, I like your question about where I would like to work as a member of the diaspora. I would start with Sanitation. There is no excuse for trash and choked gutters and there is no reason why our streets and beaches are not lined with trees. What are we waiting for? The public sector must also be sanitized. If departments want to charge premium fees for express services, they should do so instead of the unnecessary delays to attract bribes. Frustration is what drives away the diaspora. Heads must roll. We are hesitant to fire but internally, those same incompetent bosses we keep, do not hesitate out of vendetta, to transfer hard workers to remote areas. Let's challenge incompetence. Accountability is often lacking. The waiters and waitresses are not the only ones to blame for poor customer service. The government sector is worse.
That was such a great discussion as always.

So true, Brenda.
Still waiting for an apology from my brothers in Ghana, one of the main slavery post, for what their ancestors did to my ancestors. The unspoken secret was tribes raiding and capturing other tribes and selling them to the white man into slavery for a few pots and pans. The white man was not the one running into the bushes to capture my ancestors. these actions brought more than 300 years of enormous suffering to my ancestors in the west. I will migrate after an official apology. I am not sure who was more culpable for the enormous suffering of the slaves-the slave owners or those who captured my ancestors and sold them to the slave trades. A few African tribes got rich selling to the slave traders. The current generation of these people are well know and still rich in Africa. That is Ghana’s dirty little secret. First, apologize for the hurt your ancestors caused to mine. Over my dead body will I repatriate without an apology. You need to face up to the sins of your ancestors.
The question shouldn't be what the government can do rather what the Diaspora can do! We the diaspora have a role to play through employment, educating/Sharing the knowledge we've acquired and legal practices, processes etc. Don't move to Ghana to look for a job, move to CREATE the job with the skills you've learned.

Not everyone can move to Ghana because is not just about coming to Ghana, but there should be a mentality shift. If you're coming to Ghana , you've to be ready to learn a new way to see the world and a different culture, don't come here and expect things to be like the western world. Here's africa and is "beautiful" it own way
Love these conversations. I’m an African born in America. We need our own. I know that saying those words come with enormous tasks ahead of us. But it must be done. I’m in the tech business but my passion is sustainable development. I have ideas for making energy and water systems modern and accessible, building roads, and waste management. We can do this and create jobs of our people. I can’t wait to touch down in Africa again
Yes - the indigenous and the Diasporan have a lot to offer each other and collaboration is key. Combining perspectives is essential to the continents evolution. Also the attitude to service needs to be revised. To serve is not slavery - is it not demeaning or subservient - it is a highly spiritual expression. To serve facilitates and empowers - it enables the collective to realise the greatest potential and achieve the greatest good - benefitting everybody.

Don't you think that there is enough churches in Ghana and on the continent. Churches are full the people that are praying all night instead of going out there and get what God has given you all.
What about all the churches pooling money together set up companies within your community creating jobs.

The PROBLEM is NOT the DIASPOREANS coming to GHANA BUT people from neighbouring countries like NIGERIA who are also taking advantage of the open door policy and call by the GHANA GOVERNMENT for the DIASPOREANS to RETURN and SETTLE in GHANA
Charity begins at home. I think there is an awful lot of work to be done. Customer care attitudes to ourselves and each other. Also there are lots of Ghanaians living abroad who also wish to return with skills and money. Where do they fit on this plan? How receptive are locals who have stayed home and worked hard through tough times to the entire concept of return. How primed are they to be part of this? If not efforts will be sabotaged.
There has to be mutual respect between diaspora and locals.
Very true these conversations are often too 1 sided.

Africans everywhere need to start thinking like others and help each other. Israel has the law of return for all Jews around the world. Ghana is not ready to have the diaspora relocate to the country. My wife and tried to move to Ghana from the USA but found that the Government of Ghana has not put any policies in place to encourage the diaspora to move to Ghana. For instance, the Ghanaian High Commission has no diaspora desk or phone number for the diaspora to answer questions. There is no information whatsoever on the Embassy website for those of us wishing to move to Ghana. What we realized is that Ghana's pronouncements of the Year of the Return and Beyond the Return is 'hogwash or hot air. The visa system for African Americans and other African diasporas must be reviewed to encourage them to want to move to Ghana.

Secondly, it cost $1,000 to allow you to work no matter what business you’re starting. So for example, say you’re CLEANING company you pay the same as BUILDING CONTRACTORS or GOLD MINERS.
Ase to my queen and friend Sister Akosua Dentaa Amoteng what an inspirer queen and friend too.
It all sound good, but as a person that has travel to Ghana 3 times in the last 8 months I have discovered fraud when trying to buy real estate and this is a big problem. Ghana must put a system in place to deal with land issues. Black Americans that want to relocate to Ghana trust no one always be alert when doing business with locals.
Connect with some AA You tubers that explain what to look out for
Jt the Bigga Figga or Go black to Africa

I absolutely love this conversation. This is a necessary conversation to show we are preparing ourselves to be a force to be reckoned with. I have had the hope for several years that we could bridge gaps and develop great relationships, great collaborations. There is so much talent and creativity in the Black race. We have the resources, human and otherwise. We are beyond a capable people, Continental Africans and Diasporans. Thanks for this!
African Americans, African-Caribbean people, and other Diasporans should be able to come without a visa. They can be vetted in a serious manner as some other countries do if the concern is tomake sure those who come are coming to be a positive force and not a negative. It can happen.
Excellent healthcare is also an important concern aside from housing, etc.
Great conversation! Thank you.
Very educative programme. I will like to suggest that the diaspora should come to Africa and aquire African traveling documents. African Union should make that possible. We should put pressure on AU, to speed up documents that diaspora can use when coming home to Africa without visa
Interesting…I feel this conversation is a little superficial. And when they say diaspora are they only thinking about AA, what about West Indians and 2nd generation Ghanians and other Africans. It’s also a fact that some African tribes benefited from the slave trade, it’s not fictional. It would be a big disservice to the diaspora to deny that portion of history, we all need to heal/acknowledge/forgive and chart on.
When you say tribes it sounds like a whole people decided to sell some individuals, which is not true. It was certain leaders who held power that made selfish deals. Similar to some governments in the west today that allow certain immigration rules at certain times without the consent of their people necessarily. Please clean your analytical views.
People with African parents automatically get citizenship in ghana 🇬🇭 or whatever country they from
@@fabulousfarrahinsouthafrica I wasn’t speaking solely from citizenship perspective but also reacquainting yourself to a continent and a country you don’t really know or understand fully. Even 2nd generation Africans who go to a Africa get a bit of cultural shock the difference we have family to ease the transition but it’s still difficult. So that’s more so what I am refer to. The Diaspora affairs cannot put all the diaspora in same bag, they need to tailor the needs of each group according to their backgrounds. And what I am hearing is there is a lot of focus on AA which is great but they need to not ignore West Indians/ Ghanian Americans/Europeans/Australians/etc…
@Stop All Hate lies
@Stop All Hate propaganda rubbish
Curious question. How do people feel about Africans who sold or had other Africans as slaves?
Hello, this was an amazing video! Great ideas are generated by the young men; however, implementation is the key for success....take care, Dave
With all do fairness I don’t see people tell the authentic truth about the call to diaspora the title of this show does not complete the facts of what many of us experience when we relocate how hard and challenging it is for things like housing the greater is for AA and Ghanaians to truly connect and build we come it’s not easy to just register a business or successfully buy land let’s not forget opening a bank account. Ghana is not fully ready for the diasporas Ghana still is behind in things as simple as Customer Service. Many people aren’t used to constant road blocks with just wanting to build with our brother and sisters my personal opinion we do not focus much on the youth, children what is in place for the kids where are the playgrounds where are water parks open the libraries bring laptops etc gyms Ghana needs community centers it can be done. I would like to see interviews from AA men what are their experiences how are they able to build experience grow Ghana.
Common on, who should put this things in place for you to come enjoy?... the Chinese and the Europeans are here making it big.
@@kofisam9650 It’s not for people to come and enjoy it’s for people who have never experienced it. What are you really saying here think about Ghanaian children
@@fireontherunway4060 Ghana is a developing country, we are now 64 years, please don't compare us to United States which is More than three hundred years or Britain which is almost a thousand years... stop whining and if you want to see this things in place, then don't just complain, join us to develop the country... bro every district in Ghana have a community center, there are gyms all over Accra, in fact this gyms are privately owned by ghanaian business men... There are Parks in Accra, but that's not enough, the legon botanical gardens have a play ground for children, there's also afua Sutherland Park for children, and currently a private investor is building a water park at Adentan, so my brother, don't just complain, and if you think things are that bad, just roll your sleeves and get your hands dirty, because government alone can't do it all.... The Europeans and Chinese are investing in the ghanaian economy, some are building private schools, some are investing in industrialization, some are building malls, and they're not complaining, they already knew the challenges, and they're making a lot of gain by solving the problems, that's what we want from the diaspora but not people like you.
@@kofisam9650 its so interesting how the Lebanese, Chinese, and Indians are all able to come here and make a way a nd be successful without immense hand holding, yet for some reason other diasporans seem quite timid and lost in this regard...
@@kofisam9650 you should know why to speak or talk to diaspora o.k., respect
I think the year of return should have been more advertised across the globe.
How about improving customer service within the foreign affairs departments?🤔
Brother your ideas on building Economic Movement must be done by Economists mindset and government Sectors will adopt your agenda, Initiative's, innovation, Strategies, and other financial Services.
Oh yes we are
You looking so lovely !
I believe that there are challenges in the U.K./U.S that make diasporans long for acceptance in their “homeland” and then when diasporans arrive, they realise that it isn’t as easy as just being an “African”.
Each individual needs to choose what they can cope with. Racism v crazy and dangerous driving. Been seen as a cash cow and fleeced by many or freezing cold weather and low vit D.
The list goes on. Find somewhere you WANT to be, go there and prosper. However, at least find secure investments so that one day you can benefit. At times experiencing Ghana is so very disappointing. But at least we can say we have tasted and seen.
