    I cant believe Sigma hasnt swooped in and made a companion Art 11-16 to go with their other zooms. Tokina is leaving the door wide open.

    Just bought the "old" 11-16 in mint condition used for $110. I almost feel bad. So far works great on my Z-Cam S6. I get the whole zoom range without any vignette. I also tried it on my full frame Canon DSLR and yea, you have to max out to 16mm and even then you get a fair bit of vignette - but usable if cropped in post a little.

    Sweet video man! I was the same I owned this guy back in the day and wanted to buy it again for my BMPCC. Saw the new version in a store in Tokyo and did some research. Decided to go with the Gen 1 version! Its such a shame because I think they can improve the af and maybe juice it up with some new coatings.

    havimg used the tokina 11-16mm f2.8 at-x pro (not the new version,) i can honestly state this lens has been awsome in its quality and performance. used it on my 5d, 7d and 1d mk3, where it performed very well, no its not canon or nikon quality, (no bones about that) but a BIG BUT iimage quality is very comparable relative to cost at a level price, i have used this lens for weddings, portrait, landscape, close up plant -wildlife, astro, sports and festivals events, where it has never failed to give great to stunning results. my advise is if you have the funds to buy this lens. buy it, try it, if its not for you sell it, and get at least your money back. thats my honest opinion of this lens .

    Great review! I did my own review of this lens. I think the new one is totally worth buying... If you don't already own the old one. The real upgrade here is the chromatic aberration improvements. From around f:8 to f:11, I didn't see any color shift in the corners. Love your style!

    They fixed one of the big problems with the old one. The old one had ton of CA when shooting wide open. The new open is a big improvement in terms of controlling CA. If you have problems with CA on the old lens, the new lens is worth it. Otherwise its not worth it.

    Are you recording with an external microphone or is it an internal microphone?

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 3 роки тому

      Doesn't make a difference. External mics are still going to pick it up unless you have an expensive XLR shotgun mic.

  • @LawrenceMeisel
    @LawrenceMeisel 3 роки тому +1

    Is the AF noise still picked up if you use A.) a shotgun mic (Rode Pro) mounted to the top of the camera, B.) a shotgun mic mounted to a boom arm just out of the shot C.) a lav mic clipped to your shirt, D.) a wireless mic clipped to your shirt? I'm very interested in getting a wide angle telephoto with a wider aperture such as the Canon 10 - 20 F/3.5 or the Tokina 11 - 16 F2.8 but all the reviews of this type of lens complain about the AF noise. I don't understand why this happens with the wider aperture lenses and not the F4 or 4.5 lenses. Look forward to your reply.

    I’m glad they rehoused this lens because now that it’s been several years since it released, both old and new versions are super cheap used, and it’s still a solid lens; except now there’s a nicer/newer looking design option.

  • @MiguelRamos-up5tf
    @MiguelRamos-up5tf Рік тому +1

    I also thought it was just a different enclosure. But I got the new one used, because the price difference was minimal. When I apply lens distortion correction data from the old AT-X Pro DX model, it doesn't fit my images, lines don't become straight. I have to apply correction data from the ATX-i CF model. The difference in distortion is visible at the naked eye at the wide end. So, they really aren't optically equal after all.

  • @kevindiaz3459
    @kevindiaz3459 4 роки тому +5

    Thanks for the testing. Another thing to point out is the large amount of lens flares it was pulling in. They didn't even update the friggin coatings. It might have been worth it had they at least done that. New design is a lot more pleasing to the eye, but that isn't worth a whole lot to most.
    I really want Canon to make a lens like this, a fast ultra wide zoom. It would be great if it could have IS, but I feel like that not only makes it too large, but also will make it too expensive.

    • @ZachMayfield
      @ZachMayfield  4 роки тому +1

      yeah seriously the "upgrade" is lazy. Dude it would be awesome if Canon or Sigma stepped in and just destroyed this lens with 1.8 version

    • @kevindiaz3459
      @kevindiaz3459 4 роки тому +1

      @@ZachMayfield Oh yeah! I don't know that Canon can could pull off an F1.8, but I am certain Sigma could. They already got the 18-35mm and 50-100mm F1.8, they could probably figure out some kind of 11-16mm or 10-14mm F1.8, and the entire video community would lose their minds over it! Even it if were a very limited zoom range I would get it, especially if it has that sharpness like the other F1.8 zooms. I would think it would come in at least 1000 USD though, at launch, maybe 1100, and that is a tough sell. But I would be sure that video people would go for it, no doubt. It would be the main reason I would want it. As it stands, the best fast and wide lens I have for video is the Rokinon/Samyang/Bower 10mm F2.8, which isn't very impressive wide open, and fully manual.
      I think if Canon were to try it, at best we would get some plastic casing, plastic mount, EF-S 10-14mm F2.8 IS STM, and would likely come in around 699 at launch, maybe 599. Probably follow similar elements as more recent budget class models, which gives pretty good center/mid frame sharpness but lacks in the corners. I think video people and stills people would both be on it, and it could be popular too. And if you consider that the R and RP both can use EF-S lenses via the adapter, and the 4K shoots cropped, I think it could be a very successful lens. Even M series could use it, also via adapter. I know we won't see it though, as they are no longer developing lenses for EF, which I take to also mean EF-S.

    Nice video agaim. Yes it seems like there is not much difference between new and old. Also how did you get the canon t7i to look so good. • @ZachMayfield
      @ZachMayfield  4 роки тому +4

      Hey thank you! So I used the standard profile with contrast, sharpness, saturation turned all the way down. I used lumetri color in premiere to dial in exposure, then I add a curve on the highlights to keep them all under 100 ire and also smooths them out a bit more to give it more rolloff. Hope this helps, there's more detail on this in my 90D review if you wanna check that out

Among Nikkor 10-20mm 4.5-5.6, sigma 10-20mm 3.5, Tamron 10-24mm 3.5-4.5, and this Tokina lens (I am going to lump the old and new as one as they seemed very similar according it your review:). In a noisier environment, such as a street, the lens motor noise on the old Tokina lens is drowned out. But, if you want to hear real lens focus motor noise, get yourself a Nikon D3100 with a AF-S lens. The videos with the internal mic are unusable because if the noise. And the D3100 doesn't have an external mic jack.

    cool video man! looks to me like a complete different color grade between the old vs new for example at 7:44 . is that simply the lightning or can that be a lens coating kinda thing..? anyhow would be really awesome if you can get your hands on the SLR Magic MicroPrimes or meyb get Lens Rentals to lend it to you :0

    • @ZachMayfield

      Yo dude thank you! It's the exact same grade, I think it was just because the clouds were moving quickly on a really sunny day, but also it could be a difference in lens coating. The differences were pretty inconsistent so I imagine it's more of an environment thing

    Having recently discovered the world of photography, I will be purchasing the new lens simply for the fact I didn't own the previous AT-X Pro version but also in the UK it is currently some £30.00 cheaper too.
